STORYLINE

From the previous ‘teleporting’ experience, the friends realized that the compass had special powers. The following day they gathered in Peter’s garage again. When Tom picked up the compass and turned the outer dial to the right, the light reappeared. Everyone had become used to it, so they closed their eyes waiting for the rays of light to fade. Opening their eyes, they found that they had been transported to Lisa’s garage. Disappointed that they hadn’t been transported to somewhere more exciting, they went into Lisa’s living room to talk about the compass. Since they hadn’t told their families about the compass yet, Tom asked Lisa if her parents were at home. Lisa gestured at a photo on the wall and said that they were out today. Tom asked if it was an old photo, since he didn’t recognize Lisa’s parents.

Add the interrogative particle “嗎嗎嗎嗎” at the end of the sentence to ask question.

Examples:

Q: 你會說西班牙文嗎? A: 會,我會說西班牙文。 N- hu= shu! X9b1ny2w6n ma? Hu=,w# hu= shu! X9b1ny2w6n。 Can you speak Spanish? Yes, I can speak Spanish.

Q: 你會游泳嗎? A: 不,我不會(游泳)*。 N- hu= y@uy#ng ma? B*,w# b^ hu= (y@uy#ng)。

Can you swim? No, I can not (swim). *Note: the content in the parenthesis can be omitted.

b.2 Verb ++++ 不不不不 ++++Verb

A sentence can be made into a choice-type question by having both affirmative and negative options together. To answer in the affirmative, the verb is repeated. To respond in the negative simply say “不不不不 verb”. “不不不不” is the negative indicator.

Examples:

“有有有有” means “have; has” or “there is /are” in Chinese. Its negative form is “沒有沒有沒有沒有”. You cannot add “不” before “有”.

Examples:

1. 我有兄弟姐妹。 W# y#u xi!ngd=ji7m8i. I have siblings.

2. 他有一個姐姐。 T1 y#u y0 ge ji7jie. He has an older sister.

3. 我沒有弟弟。 W# m6iy#u d=di. I don’t have younger brothers.

Affirmative-negative questions: 有沒有有沒有有沒有有沒有(have or not have)

Examples:

In Chinese names, the family’s last name always comes before the first name. Family names are usually composed of one single character. However, occasionally we can see two characters for a family name, such as 歐陽 (Ouyang). The attached list shows you some common Chinese family names (Chart 1). Unlike English speakers, who commonly use a baby name book to pick out a name for their children, Chinese people usually create unique names for their children. The parents will choose either one or two characters that describe their kids or expectations for their kids. Sometimes the first word is a chosen word according to the generation sequence from a set of characters determined by their ancestors. In this case, people can tell which generation a person belongs to just by looking at his or her name. One can also tell whether they are siblings from the same family based on that chosen word. There are some examples of Chinese names for boys and girls on Chart 2. Can you tell which is more likely for girls? Of course, sometimes we can’t tell the gender simply by looking at a name. For example, a character like 明 (m0ng, bright or smart) can be found in either a boy’s name or a girl’s name.

When an English name is translated into Chinese, the sound of each syllable is matched with a sound of a Chinese character. Chinese characters are chosen that usually don’t carry any special meaning otherwise the name might sound funny. You can see some English names translated into Chinese in Chart 3.
