Pope Francis’ Coronavirus Catechesis
On August 5, 2020, Pope Francis resumed his weekly audiences after a July recess with the an-nouncement of a new catechesis series. The series focuses on healing the world from the physical and social ills related to the corona-virus pandemic. The Holy Father has used these audiences throughout the month of August to express concerns about the economy, the envi-ronment, illness, death and sin, and he has en-couraged Catholics around the world to respond with faith and hope to the challenges of the global pandemic.
Here we offer a couple selections from the pope’s catechesis:
“Renewed contact with the Gospel of faith, of hope and of love invites us to assume a creative and renewed spirit. In this way, we will be able to transform the roots of our physical, spiritual and social infirmities and the destructive practices that separate us from each other, threatening the human family and our planet.”
The pope’s series focuses on examples of Jesus bringing physical and spiritual healing in the Gospels, particularly the healing of the paralytic at Capernaum (Mk 2:1-12). He deline-ates the role of the church in physically con-fronting the pandemic: “Although the Church administers Christ’s healing grace through the Sacraments, and although she provides healthcare services in the remotest corners of the planet, she is not an expert in the preven-tion or the cure of the pandemic. She helps with the sick, but she is not an expert.” He calls upon experts and political leaders to engage with not only the physical but also the social ills of the pandemic.

They are virtues infused in us through the grace of the Holy Spirit (see CCC, 1812, 1813): gifts that heal us and that make us healers, gifts that open us to new horizons, even while we are navigating the difficult

of healing: when He heals those affected by fever (see Mk 1:29-34), by leprosy (see Mk 1:40-45), by paralysis (see Mk 2:1-12); when He restores sight (see Mk 8:22-26; Jn 9:1-7), speech or hearing (see Mk 7:31-37). In reality, He heals not only the physical evil – which is true, physical evil – but He heals the entire person. In that way, He restores the person back to the community also, healed; He liber-ates the person from isolation because He has healed him or her.”
“The pandemic has highlighted how vulnerable and interconnected everyone is. If we do not take care of one another, starting with the least, with those who are most impact-ed, including creation, we cannot heal the world.”
“Commendable is the effort of so many people who have been offering evidence of human and Christian love for neighbor, dedi-cating themselves to the sick even at the risk of their own health. They are heroes!”
“The harmony created by God asks that we look at others, the needs of others, the prob-lems of others, in communion. We want to recognize the human dignity in every person, whatever his or her race, language or condi-tion might be. Harmony leads you to recognize human dignity, that harmony created by God, with humanity at the center.”
“This renewed awareness of the dignity of every human being has serious social, economic and political implications. Looking at our brother and sister and the whole of crea-tion as a gift received from the love of the Father inspires attentive behavior, care and wonder. In this way the believer, contemplat-ing his or her neighbor as a brother or sister, and not as a stranger, looks at him or her compassionately and empathetically, not contemptuously or with hostility.”

El 5 de agosto de 2020, el Papa Francisco reanudó sus audiencias semanales después de un receso de julio con el anuncio de una nueva serie de catequesis. La serie se centra en curar al mundo de los males físicos y sociales relaciona-dos con la pandemia del coronavirus. El Santo Padre ha utilizado estas audiencias durante todo el mes de agosto para expresar preocupaciones sobre la economía, el medio ambiente, la enfer-medad, la muerte y el pecado, y ha animado a los católicos de todo el mundo a responder con fe y esperanza a los desafíos de la pandemia mun-dial. Aquí ofrecemos un par de selecciones de la cate-quesis del Papa: “El contacto renovado con el Evangelio de la fe, de la esperanza y del amor nos invita a asumir un espíritu creativo y renovado. De esta manera, seremos capaces de transformar las raíces de nuestras enfermedades físicas, espirituales y so-ciales y las prácticas destructivas que nos sepa-ran unos de otros, amenazando a la familia hu-mana y a nuestro planeta”. La serie del Papa se centra en ejemplos de Jesús trayendo curación física y espiritual en los Evan-gelios, particularmente la curación del paralítico en Cafarnaúm (Mc 2: 1-12). Delinea el papel de la iglesia en el enfrentamiento físico de la pan-demia: “Aunque la Iglesia administra la gracia sanadora de Cristo a través de los sacramentos, y aunque brinda servicios de salud en los rincones más remotos del planeta, no es una experta en la prevención ni en la cura de la pandemia. Ella ayuda con los enfermos, pero no es una exper-ta”. Pide a los expertos y líderes políticos que se comprometan no solo con los males físicos sino también con los sociales de la pandemia. Otras citas notables: “Dentro de la tradición cristiana, la fe, la espe-ranza y la caridad son mucho más que senti-mientos o actitudes. Son virtudes infundidas en nosotros por la gracia del Espíritu Santo (ver CIC, 1812, 1813): dones que nos sanan y que nos hacen sanadores, dones que nos abren a nuevos horizontes, incluso mientras navegamos
por las aguas difíciles de nuestro hora." “El ministerio de Jesús ofrece muchos ejemplos de curación: cuando sana a los afectados por la fiebre (cf. Mc 1, 29-34), por la lepra (cf. Mc 1, 40-45), por la parálisis (cf. Mc 2, 1-12); cuando restaura la vista (cf. Mc 8, 22-26; Jn 9, 1-7), el habla y el oído (cf. Mc 7, 31-37). En realidad, El sana no solo el mal físico, que es el verdadero mal, sino que sana a toda la persona. De esa ma-nera, El devuelve a la persona a la comunidad también, sanada; Libera a la persona del aisla-miento porque la ha curado”. “La pandemia ha puesto en relieve a los vulne-rables e interconectados que son todos. Si no nos cuidamos los unos a los otros, empezando por los menos, por los más afectados, incluida la crea-ción, no podremos curar el mundo”. “Encomiable es el esfuerzo de tantas personas que han venido ofreciendo evidencias del amor humano y cristiano al prójimo, dedicándose al enfermo incluso a riesgo de su propia salud. ¡Son héroes! " La armonía creada por Dios pide que miremos a los demás, las necesidades de los demás, los pro-blemas de los demás, en comunión. Queremos reconocer la dignidad humana en cada persona, sea cual sea su raza, idioma o condición. La ar-monía te lleva a reconocer la dignidad humana, esa armonía creada por Dios, con la humanidad en el centro”. “Esta conciencia renovada de la dignidad de to-do ser humano tiene graves implicaciones socia-les, económicas y políticas. Mirar a nuestros her-manos y a toda la creación como un don recibi-do del amor del Padre inspira un comportamien-to atento, cuidado y asombro. De esta forma el creyente, contemplando a su prójimo como a un hermana, y no como a un extraño, lo mira con compasión y empatía, no con desprecio ni con hostilidad”.

Todos ojeamos con curiosidad y malicia las noticias sen-sacionalistas de periódicos y revisas cuando traen chis-mes de la alta sociedad: que tal artista tiene romance, que fulano se divorció, que tal político vive en tales en-redos. Periodistas y locutores de televisión tienen cierta sicología popular: explotan la morbosidad del público que gusta de habla de vidas ajenas. Muchos disfrutan al comentar las debilidades de otros, en bajar del pedestal a otros importantes. Los chismes se transmiten de oído a oído, corren por la línea telefónica, van por correo, via-jan por avión, y sin quererlo nacen hondos resentimien-tos entre hermanos y amigos. Lo que pasa es que habla-mos a espaldas de otros, no en la cara. Y la verdad dicha así se deforma y nuestra crítica no construye nada, sino que destruye y mata.
El evangelio de este domingo nos trae una lección del Señor que es de suma importancia para todos nosotros, cuando tenemos que enfrentar el mal en los demás. Jesu-cristo nos dice: cuando veas una falta en tu hermano, habla directamente con él, en su frente, y que todo quede entre los dos. Si él te escucha, habrás ganado un her-mano. La enseñanza es clarísima: no nos dice que nos callemos, que no critiquemos. Pero nos dice que lo haga-mos de frente, a solas con él; y luego, que tengamos bue-na intención, la de ganar un hermano. Tan sólo así la crí-tica es constructiva y es cristiana.
La corrección cristiana siempre debe ser inspirada y guiada por la caridad: no debe buscar el avergonzar y confundir al pecador, sino su conversión y perdón. El cristiano está llamado a perdonar siempre per a veces esto no basta; hay que corregir al pecador para que se dé cuenta de su conducta y del mal que hace para que cam-bie, y para que otras personas no lo imiten y cometan el mismo pecado o error; además, las personas inocentes no tendrán que continuar sufriendo las consecuencias de las faltas de los otros. La corrección en privado es un deber de los individuos, y solamente cuando no produce resul-tado en privado se debe hacer públicamente. Es muy di-fícil corregir a uno sin acusarlo o condenarlo de modo
que sólo se le ayude y salve. Uno no debe buscar meter la nariz en la vida de los demás, sino obrar en favor de la justicia y la paz.
La corrección fraterna es una expresión muy importante del amor comunitario; se debe corregir teniendo en miras el bien de la comunidad. Cuando cumplimos con la obligación de la corrección fraterna, no debemos olvidar que también nosotros tene-mos el tejado de cristal, y que a la persona caída hay que ofrecerle la mano para levantarla, en lugar de pisotearla; porque Dios no quiere la muerte de pecado sino que se convierta y viva. Cuando no nos sentimos suficientemente limpios, tene-mos miedo de hablar de frente. El halar a espaldas de otros es señal de debilidad humana.
Dicen que el mundo está dividido e dos grandes grupos: los que actúan y los que critican a los que actúan. Peo la sociedad no camina por los que critican, sino por los que actúan. Necesitamos, personas que con crítica sabia nos ayuden a construir. Pero hay muchas críticas que no construyen, sino que confunden, y separan y matan. Dice el Señor en su enseñanza que muchas veces el her-mano rechaza nuestra corrección. Es que la verdad a ve-ces hiere y separa. Jesús dijo la verdad a los fariseos de su tiempo y ellos se hicieron sus enemigos, lo odiaron y lo mataron. Fue el riesgo de ser sincero y hablara de frente. Todo cristiano está llamado a ser un reproche para la so-ciedad que camina mal. Y cada cristiano debe enfrentar el riesgo de ser rechazado.
Reflexión
La misa de este domingo nos pone frente a Dios, nuestra conciencia y nuestros hermanos. Dios que nos reúne es Dios de la verdad. Hemos venido a buscar cómo ver con nuestros propios ojos la verdad, a fin de tener el valor de decirla también a los demás y así ganarlos para el bien.
