Members of the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC), in conjunction with CFAY’s

United Service Organizations (USO), organized and hosted a special event in celebration of Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 7.

Every year, members of the armed forces and their spouses gather to celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day, a day set aside to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of military spouses.

The event included booths for home businesses to share their practices with the CFAY community, networking opportunities for any interested spouses, and a jovial atmosphere with music and food.

“The event was an exposition of the various resources and services available to our military spouses at CFAY,” said Lucia Abreu, a work and Family Life Consultant at the FFSC. “We recognize that employment and childcare is one of the biggest challenges with every transition, so providing some of the CFAY approved private businesses a forum to showcase their product or service was also a tangible way to show our support.”

While members of FFSC organized the event, it would not be possible without support from members of the United Services Organization (USO) Yokosuka.

“Our hope was to make the spouses feel genuinely appreciated,” said Carmen Williams, USO Yokosuka’s center operations manager. “We provided food and various treats at our stands, as well as provided a positive atmosphere. We wanted spouses to know that the USO is here to support them through deployments and being away from their families back home.”

Yokosuka’s USO not only supports events such as these, but provides many more services around base for military spouses with the sole purpose of creating a welcoming atmosphere.

“The USO offers monthly coffee socials that alternate between main base and Ikego housing,” said Williams. “These events are a great way to network, meet new spouses and participate in a fun craft or event. We also do the same for our monthly Tot-time, so parents of small children can socialize too.”

About halfway through the events scheduled runtime, Abreu noted that it had garnered a lot of attention around the base, which resulted in unplanned appearances from various active duty service members, as well as a large influx of military spouses.

“The best part of the day were the comments from our active duty service members, as they stepped up to the microphone in front of everyone and mustered up the words to show their appreciation to both their spouse and military spouses in general.”

Military spouses support a Navy-wide mission by protecting the home front, but when assigned

Tiffany Allen and Ronda Brownd, representatives of the Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC), speak to a military spouse about employment opportunities in front of the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) commissary, during the annual base event for Military Spouse Appreciation Day, a day to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of military spouses.

abroad, they face a different set of challenges in their day-to-day lives.

“We ask so much of them,” Abreu said. “Once they’re overseas they have to leave their friends and family behind, endure extended separation from their service member, sometimes even deal with single parenting and loss of employment. These challenges shine a light on their resiliency and strength. They should be honored always.”

If you or a loved one are struggling with feelings of isolation, it may be beneficial to contact the Fleet & Family Support Center. The FFSC offices are located in the Community Readiness Center, in front of the base commissary. For more information about the FFSC and other base activities, follow this link: https://www.navymwryokosuka.com/ffsc

For more than 75 years, CFAY has provided, maintained, and operated base facilities and services in support of the U.S. 7th Fleet’s forward deployed naval forces, tenant commands, and thousands of military and civilian personnel and their families.

According to the 2019 Fleet and Marine Corps Health Risk Assessment Annual Report, 33 percent of active duty Navy and 22 percent of active duty Marine Corps respondents indicated a lack of moderate or vigorous intensity aerobic exercise in their routine. A smaller percentage of active duty Navy and Marine Corps respondents indicated a lack of strength training exercises, 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively.
