Zvoniksplitskekatedralesasvojihješestkatovasvakakojednood

najvećihgraditeljskihpostignućausrednjovjekovnojDalmaciji.

DokumenteonjegovojgradnjisakupiojeLukaJelić,aonjegovoj

skulpturiirestauracijipisaojeunekolikoradovaDuškoKečkemet.

Zvonicikatedralasastavnisu,akoneiglavnielementi

vizualnog,aliiduhovnogidentitetasrednjovjekovnihgradova.To

jeirazlogzbogkojegsučestoprikazaniinagradskimgrbovima,

patakoinaonomsplitskom,1kaoinatrogirskom.2Dovremena

izgradnjenovihvišekatnica,udrugojpoloviciXX.stoljeća,zvonik

katedrale-kampanil-biojenajistaknutijasplitskavertikala.

Dominiraojeslikomgradasmorske,pročelnestrane.Kakoje

međutimlukaukojojseSplitrazviosmještenaniskouodnosuna

cijeliSplitskipoluotok,kojiimanekolikouzvisina,zvoniksmnogih

očištanijevidljiv,posebnosjevernoiistočnoodgrada.Nijevidljiv

niusamomgradu,sgustimsrednjovjekovnimuličnimtkivom.

Gledanosazapadnestranesrednjovjekovnogakomunalnog

trgapremaistoku,vidisetekgornjidiozvonika,kojiproviruje

ponadkrovova,nozatosezvoniknaduskimprostoromPeristila,

katedralnogtrga,doimljejošvišimimonumentalnijim.

Splitskizvonikimasvojuikonosferu;prikazanjena

komunalnimgrbovima,naminijaturama,nabrojnimslikama,

odkojihjeosobitozanimljivaonaGirolomadeSantaCroceaiz

godine1549.,kojaprikazujesv.DujukojiurucinosiSplit.3

Obnovazvonika(1890.-1908.),obavljenajepremaprojektima

bečkogarhitektaAloisaHausera,kojegaje,nakonnjegovesmrti,

naslijedioEmilFöster;radovejeizvodiopoduzetnikzidarAndrija

Perišić.4Ozvonikuprijeobnovesačuvanajerelativnoskromna

dokumentacija,nekolikonacrtaimalibrojfotografija.Njegov

sumarninacrtvećgodine1751.donosiDanieleFarlati.5

Tijekomobnovemanjidiokamenihukrasavraćenjena

zvonik,novećijedioraznesennanekolikostrana.DonFrane

Bulićjevećinuukrašenihulomakadaougraditiusklopzgrada

takozvanogTusculumauSolinu;razmjestioihjeipookolnom

vrtu,adiokapitelaistupovaiskoristiojezaodrinu-sjenicu;od

spolijajesazdaoičesmu.Nekiulomcisazvonikapohranjeni

suuArheološkomemuzejuuSplitu,adioihjeuMuzejugrada

Splita.Ponekiulomcisazvonikaugrađenisuubliziniulazau

Arheološkimuzej,nanajistaknutijemumjestu,naogradnomzidu,

usvojevrsnompastišu,aranžmanuantičkihisrednjovjekovnih

ulomaka.DioulomakaizArheološkogamuzejaprenesenje

2004.godineudvorišteNadbiskupskepalače.Lutanjaulomaka,

dakle,nastavljajuseidalje,patakokonzervatoriimuzealciunose

zabuneunjihovoproučavanjetetimeotvarajutemezabuduća

traganjaizamogućepogrešneinterpretacije.

DocumentstestifyingtoitsconstructionwerecollectedbyLuka

Jelić,whileDuškoKečkemethaswrittenseveralworksonits

sculptureandrestoration.

Thebelltowersorsteeplesofcathedralswereintegral,ifnot

theprinciple,elementsofthevisualandalsospiritualidentity

ofmedievalcities.Thisiswhytheyareoftenportrayedinacity’s

coatofarms,whichisthecaseforSplit,1aswellasTrogir.2Until

theconstructionofthenewskyscrapersinthesecondhalfofthe

twentiethcentury,thebelltowerofthecathedral-thecampanile

-wasoneofthemostprominentverticalstructuresinSplit.

Itdominatedthecity’sskylinefromthefrontal,seawardside.

However,sincetheharbourinwhichSplitdevelopedisatalow

elevationrelativetotheentireSplitPeninsula(whichasseveral

prominentelevatedpoints),thetowerisnotvisiblefromanumber

ofpositions,particularlytothenorthandeastofthecity.Itisnot

evenvisibleinthecityitself,withitsdensely-laidmedievalstreets.

Lookingfromthewesternsideofthemedievalcommunalsquare

towardtheeast,onlytheupperportionofthetowerisvisibleas

itprotrudesabovetherooftops,butthisiswhyitappearseven

higherandmoremonumentalasitloomsabovethenarrow

confinesofthecathedral’ssquare-knownasthePeristyle.

ThebelltowerinSplithasitsown,richiconography:itis

portrayedonlocalcoatsofarms,inminiatures,andinnumerous

paintings,amongwhichanespeciallyinterestingexampleisone

byGirolomodeSantaCrocefrom1549,whichdepictsSt.Domnio

holdingSplitinhishands.3

Therestorationofthetower(1890-1908)wasperformed

accordingtothespecificationsofViennesearchitectAloisHauser,

who,afterhisdeath,wassucceededbyEmilFöster;workswere

carriedoutbythebuildingcontractorAndrijaPerišić.4Relatively

littledocumentationaboutthetowerpriortorestorationhasbeen

preserved:severalsketchesandasmallnumberofphotographs.A

roughsketchwasalsoprovidedin1751byDanieleFarlati.5

Duringrestoration,asmallerportionofthestoneornaments

werereturnedtothetower,butalargerportionwasdispersed

toseverallocations.Fr.FraneBulićhadmostofthedecorated

fragmentsincorporatedintothebuildingoftheso-calledTusculum

inSolin;hedistributedthemamongthesurroundinggardensas

well,andapartofthecapitalsandcolumnswereusedforatrellis;

amongthespoliaevenafountainwasretained.Somefragments

ofthetowerareheldintheArchaeologicalMuseuminSplit,and

someintheSplitCityMuseum.Somefragmentsfromthetower

werebuiltinneartheentrancetotheArchaeologicalMuseumat

Zvonikjesagrađennadpristupnimstubištempoligonalnoga

hramapreinačenogukatedralu.6Nadtimpristupnimstubištem

bilisupodignutistupovitrijema-prostaze,krozkojusepristupalo

hramu.Dakle,prvikatzvonikapodignutjeuzstupoveponad

stubištatakodajerastvorenpresvođenimprolazom.Kao

analogijaimogućiuzorprvomkatusplitskogzvonikanavodi

sezvonikkatedraleSvihSvetihuTraniju(Apulija),rastvoren

prolazomupodnožju.Nadsvođeniprolaznalaziseiupodnožju

tornjauzpročeljecrkvesvetogNikoleuBariju.7Međutim,

arhitektonskorješenjeprvogakatasplitskogzvonikauvjetovalaje

ponajprijezatečenasituacija,stubištekojejeodPeristilavodilodo

gornjegdijelahramaponadstilobata.Linijunekadašnjegstubišta

uglavnomprateipostojećestubepodzvonikom.Zvonikjedakle

veomasmjelopostavljennadstubištemunutarotvorenogaprvog

kata,kojijeujednoipristupukatedralu.

Zagradnjuzvonikanajvećimjedjelombilakorištenakamena

građaantičkog,odnosnokasnoantičkogporijekla,uključujući

stupove,stupićeikapitele.Prijeobnovezvonikjeimaoveoma

tamnupatinu,vjerojatnoizatoštojezanjegovugradnjukorišteno

starokamenjesantičkihzdanja.

Položajnastatičkiveomaosjetljivumjestu,ponadstubišta,a

potomikorištenjestaregrađebilisuuzrokommnogihproblema,

ponajprijepadanjapojedinihkomadakamenja.Zvonikjestoga

trebalopojačavatipasezbogučvršćivanjacjelinepočetkomXV.

stoljeća,godine1416.,udobanadbiskupaDujmadeJudicibusa

(1409.-1420.)iskrbnikaNikoleTvrdoja,uzzidoveprvogkata

dodajusnažnipilastriilukovi.Nekolikoispravasvjedočio

popravcimazvonika.8GraditeljiNikolaFirentinaciAndrijaAleši

plaćenisu30.studenog1472.zaradovenazamjeninekihstupova

nazvoniku.9Premaizvješćuiz1497.zvonikjeulošemstanju,a

pojedinekapiteletrebalojeizmijeniti.10Zvonikjenekolikoputa

biooštećenudarcimagroma,11 astalnojenedostajalosredstava

zapopravakdotrajalihdijelova.TakoihumanistMarkoMarulić

godine1524.oporučnoostavljasredstvazapopravkesplitskog

zvonika,12anajednomkapiteluistaknutjegrbobiteljiMarulić.13

KrajemXVIII.stoljećanaobnovigornjihkatovaradiojeinženjer

NikolaVojnović-Nakić.TijekomdvadesetihgodinaXIX.stoljeća

obavljenjenizpopravakapodvodstvomarhitektaikonzervatora

VickaAndrića,kojijedaoizraditinacrtezvonika.14

itsmostprominentpoint,theboundarywall,insortofapastiche,

ordisplay,offragmentsfromAntiquityandtheMiddleAges.Some

ofthefragmentsfromtheArchaeologicalMuseumweretakento

thecourtyardoftheArchbishop’sPalacein2004.The“wandering”

ofthesepiecesthuscontinues,causingconfusionforconservation

specialistsandMuseumstaffintheirresearch,therebyopening

newtopicsforfuturesearchesandalsoleadingtopotentially

erroneousinterpretations.

Thebelltowerwasconstructedabovetheaccessstairwayof

thepolygonaltemplethatwastransformedintothecathedral.6

Thecolumnsoftheportico(prostasis)thatledtothetemplewere

raisedabovethisstairway.Thus,thefirstfloorofthebelltower

waserectedalongthecolumnsabovethestairwaybyopening

upavaultedpassage.Thus,ananalogyandpossiblemodelfor

thetowerinSplitisthebelltoweroftheCathedralofAllSaintsin

Trani(Apuglia),openedbyapassageatitsfoot.Avaultedpassage

alsoatthefootofthetowercanbefoundatthefrontalsideofthe

ChurchofSt.NicholasinBari.7However,anarchitecturalsolution

tothefirstlevelofSplittowerwaslimitedbytheexistingsituation,

i.e.thestairwayleadingfromthePeristyletotheuppersectionof

thetempleabovethestylobate.Thelineoftheformerstairway

generallyfollowedtheexistingstepsunderthetower.Thetower

wasthusveryboldlyplacedabovethestairwaywithintheopen

firstfloor,whichalsoservesasaccesstothecathedral.

StonematerialswithoriginsinAntiquity,particularlyLate

Antiquity,includingcolumns,smallcolumnsandcapitals,were

usedtoconstructthetower.Priortorestoration,thetowerhada

verydarkpatina,probablybecauseveryoldstonefrombuildings

datingbacktoAntiquitywereusedforitsconstruction.

Thepositionabovethestaticallyverysensitivestairway,and

useofoldmaterials,causedmanyproblems,theprimaryonebeing

thatindividualpiecesofstonewouldoftenfall.Thetowerthushad

tobereinforced,sofortheneedsofreinforcementofthewhole

atthebeginningofthefifteenthcentury,in1416(duringthetime

ofArchbishopDomniodeJudicibus(1409-1420)andcaretaker

NikolaTvrdoj),strongpilastersandarcheswereaddedalongthe

wallsofthefirstfloor.Severaldocumentstestifytorepairsmade

tothetower.8ThebuilderNiccoloofFlorenceandAndreasAlexius

werepaidtoreplacesomecolumnsonthetoweron30November

1472.9Accordingtoareportfrom1497,thetowerwasinpoor

condition,andindividualcapitalshadtobereplaced.10Thetower

razlogaprišlosepostupnomrušenjukatovazvonika,apotom

faksimilskojobnovi.Većtokomobnovepojavilesusekritikevezane

uzpitanjejelizvonikuopćetrebaloradikalnoobnavljati;ukazivalo

seinanemarpremastarimkomadimakojisubilidekorativno

obrađeni;zamjeralase,srazlogom,inedosljednostuneodveć

faksimilskojizvedbipojedinihelemenata,poputkapitelaiskulptura.

Narestauriranomzvonikuvelikidioskulpturaiarhitektonskih

česti,kapitela,konzolastupovaivijenacasufaksimili,itočesto

nedoslovnoizvedeni;dionjihnijenismještennaizvornamjesta.

Računasedasuzamijenjenetričetvrtinedekorativnihulomaka.

Vrijeme i sljedovi gradnje zvonika

Ovremenugradnjezvonikainjegovimfazamapostoje

različitamišljenja.Najčešćeseponavljapretpostavkadajegradnja

zvonikazapočelauXIII.stoljeću,udobakraljaBeleIV.ikraljice

Marije.Gradnjasepotomnastavilauetapama.

Nazvonikusenezamjećujestilskarazlikaizmeđupojedinih

katova.15Naprvadvakatagotovosvikapitelisukorintskoga

ikompozitnogtipa.Načetvrtomipetomkatukapitelisu

drugačijegtipa,zadebljanihlistova;ukapitelnimzonama

pojavljujesetakođermotivzadebljanihlistova.Unadsvođenoj

prostorijiinadrugomkatuzvonikaukapitelnojzoniponad

pilastaraukrasisutakođeroblikazadebljanihlistova.Dvatakva

kapitelanalazilasuseinajužnomzidudrugogakata.Dakle,

mjestimicesetajmotivpojavljujeinadonjimkatovimapastoga

tajtipkapitelanijekriterijzavremenskiredoslijed.Takvihkapitela

iukrasasmotivomzadebljalogglatkoglišćaimaprimjericena

trogirskojkatedrali,kojajedokrovasagrađenadosredineXIII.

stoljeća,painanjezinomjužnomportaluizgodine1213.,na

apsidama;unjezinojunutrašnjostipaktakveukrasenalazimona

kapitelnimzonamanastupovima.16

Razlikautipovimakapitelaizmeđugornjihidonjihkatova

splitskogazvonikanemože,dakle,bitisigurankriterijza

dataciju.Nebistogabilomogućetvrditidasukatoviizrazličitih

epohaistilova,tedasudonjikatovi,skapitelimakorintskogaili

kompozitnogtipa,izdobaromanike,aonipakgornji,skapitelima

sazadebljanimlišćem(palminimgranama),izdobaromanikeiličak

gotike.Razlikaizmeđudonjihigornjihkatovamožebitieventualno

indicijazafaze,alineizastilskerazlike.Dakle,igornjekatove

(siznimkomzadnjeg,šestogkata,loggie),smatramotakođer

romaničkimaidatiramoihudrugupolovinuXIII.stoljeća.Pojedini

ornamentinasvimkatovima,posebnovijenaca,siznimkom

završnogašestogkatauoblikuloggie,gotovosuistovjetnionima

wasdamagedbylightningstrikesseveraltimes,11 andtherewasa

chronicshortageoffundstorepairoverlywornportions.Soeven

humanistwriterMarkoMarulićleftfundsinhiswillforrepairsto

thetowerinSplitin1524,12andthecoatofarmsoftheMarulić

familyisprominentlydisplayedonacolumn.13Attheendofthe

eighteenthcentury,theengineerNikolaVojnović-Nakićworkedon

restorationoftheupperfloors.Duringthe1820s,aseriesofrepairs

weremadeundertheleadershipofarchitectandconservation

specialistVickoAndrić,whocommissionedthepreparationof

blueprintsforthetower.14

Duetotheexcessiveageofstonematerialsandindividual

columns,andalsoduetostaticreasons,thefloorsofthetower

weregraduallytorndown,andthenrestoredasfacsimiles.

Criticismalreadyemergedduringrestorationworkstied

tothequestionofwhetherthetowerevenrequiredsuch

radicalrestoration;thenegligencetowardolddecoratively

renderedpieceswaspointedout;well-groundedcriticismof

theinconsistencyapparentinthenotquitefaithfulrendering

ofindividualelementswasraised:thismostlypertainedtothe

capitalsandsculpture.Ontherestoredtower,alargeportionof

thesculptureandarchitecturalfeatures,capitals,columnconsoles

andcornicesarefacsimiles,andoftennotfaithfullyrendered;some

ofthemwerenoteveninstalledattheiroriginallocations.An

estimatedthreefourthsofthedecorativepieceswerereplaced.

Time and Sequences of the Tower’s Construction

Therearevariousopinionsonthetimeofconstructionand

phasesofthebelltower.Anoft-repeatedhypothesisisthatthe

tower’sconstructionbeganinthethirteenthcentury,duringthe

reignofKingBelaIVandQueenMary.Constructionthencontinued

inphases.

Nostylisticdifferencescanbediscernedbetweenindividual

floors.15Onthefirsttwofloors,almostallcapitalsareeither

Corinthianorcomposite.Onthefourthandfifthfloorsthecapitals

aredifferent,withbroadleaves;broadleavesalsoappearasamotif

intheareasaroundthecapitals.Thebroadleafmotifalsoappears

inthevaultedspaceandonthetower’ssecondfloorinthecapital

zoneabovethepilasters.Twosuchcapitalswerealsolocatedon

thesouthernwallofthesecondfloor.Thus,atplacesthismotifalso

appearsonthelowerfloors,sothiscapitaltypecannotservesasa

criteriontodeterminethechronologicalsequence.Suchcapitals

anddecorationswithbroad,smoothleafmotifscanalsobefound,

forexample,inthecathedralinTrogir,whichwasfullyconstructed

dosljednograđenuromaničkomstilutijekomXIII.stoljeća;završni,

šesti,oktogonalnikat,loggia,sagrađenjenaknadno,vjerojatno

tijekomprvepoloviceXVI.stoljeća.

Završni kat zvonika

Završnipoligonalnikatzvonikabitnojedrugačiji.Naime,

dokjezvonikuoblikuprizmepravokutnogpresjeka,zadnjikat,

rastvorenpoputloggie,poligonalnogje,osmerokutnogoblikau

tlocrtu;nadnjimesepakdižekrovuoblikuvišestranepiramide

podkojomjebilajajolikakupolnakonstrukcija,paraboličnog

oblikaupresjeku.Tajzavršnikat,loggia,jetijekomobnovezvonika

obnovljenuneoromaničkomstilu,štoneodgovarazatečenom,

izvornomstanju.Naime,motivtakverestauracijebilojestilsko

ujednačavanjecjeline.Uliteraturiseuglavnomnavodikakojetaj

završnikat,loggia,dovršentekkrajemXV.,odnosnopočetkom

XVI.stoljeća.TajsekatdovodiuvezusNikolomFirentincemi

AndrijomAlešijem,kojisuzaistaradilinazvoniku,no,prema

poznatojispravi,teknapopravcimapojedinihdotrajalihdijelova.

Sasvimdovršenizvoniksazadnjimpoligonalnimkatom

prikazanjenavećspomenutojsliciGirolomadeSantaCroceaiz

Thedifferencesbetweencapitaltypesintheupperandlower

floorsoftheSplitbelltowercannot,therefore,serveasacertain

basisfordating.Itwouldthereforebeimpossibletoassertthat

thefloorsdatebacktodifferenterasandstyles,andthatthelower

floors,withCorinthianandcompositecapitals,datebacktothe

Romanesqueperiod,whiletheupperfloors,withcapitalsfeaturing

broadleaves(palmbranches)datebacktotheRomanesque

orevenGothicperiods.Thedifferencebetweenthelowerand

upperfloorsmaypossiblyindicatephasesratherthanstylistic

differences.Thus,theupperfloors(withtheexceptionofthetop,

sixthfloor,theloggia)arealsodeemedRomanesqueandthey

shouldbedatedtothesecondhalfofthethirteenthcentury.

Individualornamentsonallfloors,particularlythecornices—with

theexceptionofthesixthfloorintheformofaloggia—arealmost

identicaltothoseintheTrogircathedralfromthethirteenth

century.17Itisthusdeemedthatthebelltowerwasconsistently

constructedintheRomanesquestyleduringthecourseofthe

thirteenthcentury;thefinal,sixth,octagonalfloor,theloggia,was

constructedsubsequently,probablyduringthefirsthalfofthe

sixteenthcentury.

Top floor of the tower

Thetop,polygonalfloorofthetowerisessentiallydifferent.

Whilethetowerhasaprismaticcross-sectionatregularangles,

thetopfloor,openlikealoggia,ispolygonal,orratheroctagonal

initsfloor-plan;itiscappedbyaroofshapedlikeamulti-faceted

pyramidthatcoveredanovaldomeconstructionwithparabolic

cross-section.Thistopfloor,theloggia,wasrestoredintheneo-

Romanesquestyleduringreconstructionworks,whichdoesnot

correspondtoitsoriginalform.Themotiveunderlyingrestoration

wastostylisticallyaligntheentirestructure.Accordingtothe

literature,thisfinalfloor,theloggia,wasonlycompletedatthe

endofthefifteenthorbeginningofthesixteenthcentury.This

floorisassociatedwithNiccoloofFlorenceandAndreasAlexius,

whodidactuallyworkonthetower,although,accordingtoknown

documents,onlytodorepairsonindividualwornsections.

Thecompletelyfinishedtowerwithitspolygonaltopflooris

portrayedintheaforementionedpaintingbyGirolomodeSanta

Croceof1549,sothisdateiscitedaspost quem non.However,

thealreadycompletedtower,asnoted,wasdepictedmuch

earlier,inthecoatsofarmsofSplitfromthefourteenthand

fifteenthcenturies.AminiatureintheBudapestCodex,whichalso

TomeArhiđakona,prikazanjegrbgradaSplitaizXIV.stoljeća

sazidinamanadkojimastršečetirikatadovršenogzvonika.18

Dovršenizvonikprikazanjeinadvasplitskagrbauklesanau

kamenu,najednomizXIV.stoljećainadrugomspočetkaXV.

stoljeća.19GradprikazanuminijaturamaHrvojevamisalaspočetka

XV.stoljećaidentificirasekaoSplit,sprepoznatljivimelementima

Dioklecijanovepalače.20Najednojminijaturi(f.47.)izHrvojeva

misala,sascenomKristaiSamaritanke,ponadzidinavidesetri

katazvonikaodkojihjeonajzavršnioblikapoligonalneprizme

iznadkojejepiramidalnikrov;nadrugojminijaturi,međutim,

uistomkodeksu(f.56.)sprizoromKristovaulaskauJeruzalem,

ponadzidinastršitekzadnjipoligonalnikatspiramidalnim

krovom.Istina,utodobatakviprikazigradova,posebno

pojedenihzagrada,sasvimsukonceptualniilipakveomasumarni,

noipakjenasvimnavedenimprikazimazvonikpredočenkao

dovršen.Razlikaubrojukatovazvonikanapojedinimprikazima

možebitirezultatkonceptualnogaprikaza-naznake.Razlikeu

brojukatovanadvijeminijatureizHrvojeva misalaodređenesu

kutompromatranja.Bilobinepriličnodasenagradskomgrbu

prikažekrnji,nedovršenizvonik.Stogaipaknebibilomoguće

naosnovitihsumarnih,konceptualnihprikazaizvlačitisigurnije

zaključkeooblikuzvonikainjegovimsljedovima.21

Uromaničkojarhitekturitipzvonikaprizmatičnogoblikai

pravokutnogpresjeka,nakojemzavršnikatimaoblikpoligonalne

prizme,nijenepoznat.Takavjeprimjericeromaničkizvonikveć

spomenutekatedraleSvihSvetihuTraniju.Vrhtogromaničkog

zvonika,građenogunekolikoetapa,dovršenjepočetkomXIV.

stoljeća(1352.-1365.).22Izvonikromaničkekatedralesvetog

GiminianauModenitakođerzavršavakatomuoblikupoligonalne

prizme.23

miniaturescontainedintheMissalofHrvojefromthebeginning

ofthefifteenthcenturyisidentifiedasSplit,withtherecognizable

elementsofDiocletian’sPalace.20Inoneminiature(f.47)from

Hrvoje’sMissalshowingthesceneofChristwiththeSamaritan,

threefloorsofthetowercanbeabovetheramparts,ofwhichthe

topfloorisshapedlikeapolygonalprismcoveredbyapyramidal

roof.Ontheotherminiatureinthesamecodex(f.56),showingthe

sceneofChristenteringJerusalem,onlythepolygonaltopfloor

withthepyramidalroofjustabovetherampartscanbeidentified.

Tobesure,inthaterasuchdepictionsofcities,especiallyindividual

buildings,areentirelyconceptionalorevenverysuperficial,but

theynonethelessshowthetowerascomplete.Thedifferencein

thenumberoftowerfloorsinindividualdepictionsmaybethe

resultofconceptualportrayals/indications.Thedifferencesin

thenumberoffloorsinthetwominiaturesfromHrvoje’sMissal

aredeterminedbytheangleofobservation.Itwouldhavebeen

inappropriatetodepicttheincompletetowerinthecity’scoatof

arms.Thusitisimpossibletoderiveacertainconclusionastothe

formofthetoweranditsconstructionsequencesonthebasisof

thesesummary,conceptualdepictions.21

Theprismaticbelltowerwithrectangularcross-sectionanda

polygonalprism-shapedtopfloorisnotunknowninRomanesque

architecture.TheRomanesquetoweronthealreadymentioned

AllSaintsCathedralinTranihas,forinstance,thesameform.The

topofthisRomanesquetower,constructedinseveralstages,was

completedatthebeginningofthefourteenthcentury(1352-1365).22

ThebelltoweroftheRomanesqueCathedralofSt.Geminianusin

Modenaalsohasatopfloorshapedlikeapolygonalprism.23

ornamentalnimotivinavijencuzadnjegkata,loggie,bilisuzaista

renesansni:konzolice,pojasjastučastoispupčen,jonskakima.Svi

timotivipoznatisuinaDioklecijanovojpalači,primjericekimas

jajolikimispupčenjimanaistočnimisjevernimvratima;jastučasto

ispupčenipojasikonzolicenalazesenaarhitravuPeristila,paje

graditeljzadnjegkatazvonikamogaoimatiuzoreuneposrednoj

blizini.Valjanapomenutidasejastučastoispupčenipojasu

dalmatinskomgraditeljstvunejavljaprijeXVI.stoljeća.Stupovi

kojinoselukoveukapitelnojzoniimalisuvišestrukoprofilirane

istakeiukraseuoblikuzubaca,takođerrenesansnihstilskih

obilježja.Međutim,naarhivskimfotografijamainacrtimaizvornog

stanjalukovisubiliblagoprelomljenogoblika.Kakotajkatu

tlocrtuimaoblikstiještenogosmerokuta,takosulukoviotvora

naizmjenceužiiširi.Naužimotvorimalukovisuizrazitošiljasti.

Kakojetozapaženo,upravozbogčinjenicedajeprizmazvonika

pravokutnog,anekvadratnogoblika,loggiajedobilaoblik

stiještenogosmerokuta,pasuiotvorinaizmjenceužiiširi.Zatose

nadužimotvorima,zbogujednačavanjavisina,koristišiljastiluk.24

Stilska obilježja

Zvonikjeucjeliniuduhuromaničkogstila,sverastvoreniji

premavrhu.Nasvimkatovima,osimnaonomzavršnom,naloggi,

razabiruseobilježjaromaničkogstilapočevšiodprofilavijenacai

njihovihukrasa,padouobičajenogmotivavisećih,slijepihlukova.

Naprvomkatu,ponadpilastara,naknadnosazidanihna

bočnimstranamazbogojačavanjazvonika,lukovisemeđusobno

sijekutakodaoblikujušiljastelukovegotičkihstilskihobilježja;

kapitelinatimpilastrimaukrašenilišćemtakođersugotičkih

stilskihobilježja.

Bezobziranarazličitesljedoveugradnji,zvonikipakdjeluje

stilskijedinstveno,sobilježjimakasneromanike.Prizmazvonika

veomajeplastičnoartikulirana,sasnažnimprofilacijamavijenaca

kojezvonikkatedralerazdvajajunakatove,stupnjevanjimaploha,

igromstupovaidvostrukihstupića,impostaponadkapitela…

Stupovaistupićabilojenazvonikustotinjak.Ponekistupićiimali

sutordiranežljebove.Bilojeokodvjestopedesetdekorativno

tretiraniharhitektonskihčesti.Plastičnostcjelineosobito

pojačavajustupovinauglovima.25

Zbogsvojeiznimneraščlanjenostiiplastičnostizvoniksekao

cjelinadoimljepoputgolemeskulpture.Gotičkizvoniciveoma

suplastičnoartikulirani,noskompliciranimiteškosagledivim

swollenprotrudingbeltdoesnotappearinDalmatianarchitecture

zoneswithmultiplymouldeddentilaccentsanddecorationsare

alsoRenaissancestylisticfeatures.However,onarchivalphotographs

andoriginaldesigns,thearcheshadagentlybrokenform.Sincethe

layoutofthisfloorisshapedlikeacompressedoctagon,thearchesto

theopeningarealternativelynarrowerandbroader.Onthenarrower

openings,thearchesarequitetapered.Asnoted,preciselyduetothe

factthattheprismofthetowerisrectangularratherthanquadratic,

theloggiaisshapedlikeacompressedoctagon,sotheopeningsare

alternativelynarrowerandwider.Thisiswhythetaperedarchwas

usedonthenarroweropenings,tobalancetheheight.24

Stylistic features

ThetowerinitsentiretyreflectstheRomanesquestyle,

openingincreasinglytowardthetop.Romanesquefeaturescan

bediscernedonallfloors,exceptonthetopfloor,theloggia,

beginningwiththecornicemouldsandtheirdecorations,upto

thecustomarymotifofhanging,blindarches.

Onthefirstfloor,abovethepilasterssubsequentlybuiltonthe

lateralsidestoreinforcethetower,thearchesintersecttoform

taperedarcheswithGothicstylisticfeatures.Thecapitalsonthese

pilastersdecoratedwithleavesalsodisplayGothicfeatures.

Regardlessofdifferingconstructionsequences,thetower

nonethelessappearsstylisticallyuniformwithlateRomanesque

features.Thetower’sprismissculpturallyarticulated,withsharply

mouldedcornicesthatdividethetowerintofloors,andwithsurface

grades,interplaybetweencolumnsandsmalldoublecolumns,

andimpostsabovethecapitals…Therewereroughlyonehundred

columnsandsmallcolumns.Somesmallcolumnshadcurvedflutes.

Therewereapproximatelytwohundredandfiftydecoratively

treatedarchitecturalpieces.Thefiguralcharacteroftheentire

structureisparticularlyreinforcedbycolumnsatthecorners.25

poplastičnostiibogatstvuukrasa,uodnosuprimjericenaonaj

rustičnicrkveuNinuiliuodnosunaonajreprezentativnikatedrale

uRabu,starijiijednostavniji.Dakle,ucjelinizvonikjeipak

kasnoromaničkihstilskihobilježja.26

Motivstupovanauglovimasvojstvenjegotičkomstilu.27Čestu

upotrebustupovauzzidniplaštsplitskizvonikmoždaduguje

ugledanjunaarhitektonskemotiveizDioklecijanovepalače,

primjericenastupovenakonzolamauznišenasjevernimijužnim

vratima.28Stupoviuzzidovepostavljenisuiupoligonalnomhramu

-katedrali.Motivstupovanauglovimaiuzzidoveuprvomkatu

zvonikaposljedicajeoslanjanjanazatečenusituaciju,nastupove

trijemaponadpristupnogstubištapoligonalnoghrama.Nakon

restauracijestupovinaprvomkatuzamijenjenisupolustupovima.

Naime,prvikatzvonika,kojisediženadpodnožjem,zarestauracije

jeproširen,valjdazbogstatičkihrazloga.

ThecolumnmotifonthecornersisuniquetotheGothicstyle.27

ThefrequentuseofcolumnsalongtheexternalsurfaceoftheSplit

towerisperhapsduetotheuseofmotifsfromDiocletian’sPalace

asmodels,suchasthecolumnsontheconsolesalongtheniches

werealsoinstalledinthepolygonaltemple/cathedral.Thecolumn

dokojihjedošlotijekomgradnje,većnaknadnimintervencijama

zbogpopravakaiučvršćivanjazvonika.

Skulpture na zvoniku

Zvoniksplitskekatedraleiznimanjeipovelikombrojuskulptura

iraznorodnihornamenata.Kiparskitretiraniharhitektonskihčesti

imatridesetak,uključujućipunuplastikuireljefe.29Gotovosvikipovi

ireljefipokazujukasnoromaničkastilskaobilježja.Poznatojeime

jednogmajstora.TojemajstorOto,kojijeizradioreljefesv.Dujmaisv.

StašatereljefapostolaPetra,ugrađenuprvikatzvonikapredulazom

ukatedralu.Naprvomkatuzvonika,upredvorjukatedrale,uzidanisu

thebase,wasexpandedduringrestoration,forreasonsprobably

IndividualGothicstylisticfeaturesonindividualsculptures

andarchitecturalelementsarethusinterpretednotasstyle-based

changesthatoccurredduringconstruction,butratherassubsequent

interventionsduetorepairsandreinforcementofthetower.

Sculpture on the tower

ThebelltowerofthecathedralinSplitisalsoexceptionalin

termsofthelargenumberofsculpturesandvariousornamentson

it.Thereareaboutthirtysculpturallytreatedarchitecturalpieces,

includingfullsculpturesandreliefs.29Almostallstatuesandreliefs

exhibitlateRomanesquestylisticfeatures.Thenameofoneofthe

masters,Oto,isknown.HemadethereliefsofSt.DomnioandSt.

AnastasiusandthereliefofSt.Peter,installedinthefirstfloorofthe

towerinfrontoftheentrancetothecathedral.Romanesquereliefs

depictingtheAnnunciationandtheNativitywerealsoinstalledon

thetower’sfirstfloor,inthecathedral’svestibule.30Theportrayalofa

huntinthearchofthevaultedpassageabovethestairsalsoshows

Romanesquestylisticfeatures.Lionsandstatuesofcolumnbearers

attheveryentrancetothetowerwerealsocarvedinthethirteenth

century.Thesculptedarchitecturalsurfaces/consolesonallfloorsof

thetower,excepttheloggia,alsobearRomanesquefeatures.

Onthefirstfloor,onthetower’sface,afiguredepictinga

nudewomanandoneshowingamanseizedbyademonhave

beenrecognizedastheworkoftheMasterBoninofromMilan(+

1429.).31Alsofromthebeginningofthefifteenthcenturyisastatue

ofanangelbearingthecoatofarmsofArchbishopDomniode

Judicibus,formerlyinstalledonthesouthernsideofthefirstfloor.32

SculptureswithGothicstylisticformsandsemi-capitalswithwavy

foliageweresubsequentlyincorporated,duringlaterworksto

repairandreinforcethebaseofthetower.

Živiodnospremazatečenojantičkojbaštinipotvrđuje

srednjovjekovnafiguraubazistupasačetvrtogkata(napročelnoj

stranizvonika),kojaseprepoznajekaosfinga.33Upoleglom

položajupoputsfinge,naistomkatu,jednakooblikovana,nalazi

sefigurakojaprikazujelava(grifona?).34Iromaničkaumjetnost

poznajemotivsfinge,naravno,skonotacijamasvojstvenimaklasi

fantastičnihbićakojapripadajusferigrešnog.Sfinga,primjerice,

bdijevrhportalacrkvesv.NikoleuBariju.Smatrasedajeta

kamenasfingaimalauzoreugrčkimkeramičkimkipovimau

funkcijiakroterija.35Konzolaslikomsfingeistaknutajenapročelju

Aram’sheadreliefisportrayedononeconsole.39Theram’s

headmotifwasotherwiserecognizedonacofferfromtheportico

ofthepolygonaltemple,anditmaybeassociatedwiththe

iconographyofJupiterAmon.40Evenso,theram’sheadmotifwas

notunknowninmedievalartaswell.41

Thetoweralsohadaconsoledepictingtheheadofasteer.42

Asopposedtotheram’sheadrelief,thisconsolefeaturedafully

sculptedsteer.43

Theentirefrontofthesteer’sbodyprotrudesabovethenorthern

archconnectingthetowerwiththebodyofthecathedral.Thisanimal,

asisknown,hadaprivilegedpositioninthemedievalimagination.

Steersmodestlypullingawagonareharmoniousandloyalto

oneanother;theyforetellchangesintheweather(…ubi naturali

sensu collegunt mutationem coeli…);whentherainstops,they

peerfromthebarnandwanttogoout.Sincetheyareneutered,

theybehavedifferentlythanbulls,andtheyareoftenpresentin

paganreligions.Forexample,thereisthesteeronthebelltower

ofthecathedralinLaon(12thcent.)shownalsoonthewell-known

Zatojepijetao,simbolbdjenjaisavjesti,imaopovlaštenomjesto

usrednjovjekovnomimaginariju.Onbudiumračnapraskozorja

prizivajućisvjetlost,pozivajućinamolitvuinaposao.Uspoređivahuga

isprelatima;spominjaoseikaodoctor prudentissimus.Stogserazloga

figurapijetlapostavljavrhzvonikaufunkcijivjetrulje.Utomkontekstu

trebashvatitiinjegovprikaznakorskimklupamausplitskoj

katedrali,ukojimasebdjeloimolilo,naravno,smogućnošćudase

utoneunepoželjnidrijemež.50

Twokneelingsteers,identicallyformedwiththeirentirebodiesin

almostthesameposeasthoseinDalmatia,watchoverthewindow

ontheapseofthecathedralinTrani.47

AsculptureoflargedimensionswithRomanesquestylistic

featureswassubsequentlyinstalledonthefaçadetothechurchat

SustipaninSplit,anditportraysawingedmonstersimilartoalion.48

InthecontextoftheDalmatianbestiaryitisworthwhilealso

mentioningtheironroosterthatoncestoodontopofthecrosson

thegableoftheeasternfaceoftheTrogircathedral’smaingable.49

Thesymbolismoftheroosterisassociatedwiththewell-known

wordsfromtheGospels(Mark14:72)aboutPeter,whowilldeny

Christbeforethecockcrowsthreetimes.Thisiswhytherooster,as

thesymbolofthevigilandconscience,hadadistinguishedplace

inthemedievalimagination.Itcrowsinthedarknessofthepre-

dawnhours,callingtoprayerandwork.Ithasbeencomparedtothe

prelates,andalsomentionedasdoctor prudentissimus.Thisiswhythe

figureoftheroosterwasplacedatoptowerstofunctionasaweather

vane.Itisinthiscontextthatitsportrayalonthechoirpewsinthe

Splitcathedralshouldbeviewed,asthisiswherevigilsarekeptand

prayersaresaidwith,ofcourse,thepossibilityofdozingoff.50

Imaindicijadasenatommjestuodlomljenokamenjeiobrađivalo,

T.G.Jackson,opisujućizvonikprijeobnove,spominjeantičke

stupoveikapitele,porfirizelenimramor(verd’ antico).58Stupovi

upodnožjuzvonikakojisupripadaliprostazisamoghrama

pročelnojstrani,upodnožju,najugozapadnomuglu,isklesan

jeodcippolina.60Naistaknutomemjestunatrećemkatu,na

thelargenumberofspolia.56Thelargenumberofcolumnsand

smallcolumnsonthetowerhadtheiroriginsinClassicalandLate

Antiquity,mostlikelyfromSalona,butprimarilyfromDiocletian’s

Palace.Eventhestonematerialsfromwhichthetowerwas

constructedwerebrokenofffromtheruinsofDiocletian’sPalace.A

surfacewasdiscoveredinthesouth-easternpartofthePalace,near

theemperor’schambersnexttothebaths,whereallofthewalls

fromAntiquitywereplacedwhenremoved,soitisbelievedthat

stonewasdrawnfromthebasementroomsfromthatplace,froma

sortoftrench.Thereareindicationsthatthefragmentedstonewas

alsoworkedthere,preciselytoconstructthecathedral’sbelltower.57

Describingthebelltowerpriortorestoration,T.G.Jackson

mentionedtheAntiquecolumnsandcapitals,theporphyryand

greenmarble(verd’ antico).58Thecolumnsatthebaseofthetower

thatbelongedtotheprostasisofthetempleitselfwerecarved

fromredandgreyEgyptiangranite.59Thecolumnonthefront,at

thebaseonthesouthwestcorner,wascarvedfromcippolino.60At

aprominentplaceonthethirdfloor,onthenorth-westerncorner

ofthetower,amarblebasecolumnwasbuiltwhichstandsoutin

termsofitsgreencolour,sizeandalsounusual,elongatedform.

Thegreenbasecolumnonthetowerwasprobablyacomponent

oftheluxuriousfurnishingsoftheemperor’schambersinthe

Palace.Itisgenerallyknownthatpreciousmaterialswereusedin

theformworkanddecorationsinDiocletian’sPalace:porphyry,

onyx,alabaster,varioustypesofmarble(Proconese,pavonzetto,

gialo antico,cippolino,redAfricanmarble),andindividualglasstiles

inthemosaicsweregilded.61Recentlyacolourfulmarblemensa

wasfoundthatmayhavebelongedintheemperor’sdiningroom.

jemoždapripadalacarskojblagovaonici.

Mramor,dakakoantičkogporijekla,mjestimicesekoristio

iuornamentalnesvrhe,patakoipodsvodovimaprvogkata,

ponadstubišta.Komadićciraznobojnogkamenjaugrađenisu

podlukovimadrugogkatazvonikananjegovojpročelnojstrani.

Jedanstupićsazvonika,sadausklopusjeniceuTusculumu,

isklesanjeodprokoneškogmramora.Iuopremikatedrale

koristiosemramorantičkogporijekla.Cijelapropovjedaonica

sagrađenajeodantičkihspolija.Primjerice,polustupovinaogradi

propovjedaoniceukatedralisuraznobojni,dapače,svakielement

-kapiteli,bazeistupovi-drugačijejebojeioddrugačijevrste

mramora.Svakako,mramorjeosimsvojihkromatskihimateričkih,

Atplacesmarble,ofAntiqueorigintobesure,wasalsousedfor

andmadeofdifferenttypesofmarble.Tobesure,overandabove

itschromatic,materialandaestheticallyrelevantproperties,

particularlyitslustre,marblealsohassignificancedueitsevocation

ofhighvalueandancientpedigree.62

Natrećemkatuzvonikabiojeugrađenifragment

monumentalnogreljefakojisenakonobnovezvonikačuva

uArheološkomemuzejuuSplitu.63Sačuvanireljeftekjedio

(trećina?)izgubljenecjeline.Prikazujebožicuskrunomgradskih

zidinailimoždasmodiusomnaglavi;uznjusurazličitabožanstva

(ilideificiraneosobe?).64Ostavljamootvorenimpitanjaporijekla

reljefainjegovudataciju,identifikacijupojedinihfigura,pogotovo

božiceskrunomgradskihzidinailipaksmodiusomnaglavi

(TycheSalonitana,Kibela…).Jeliizborovogreljefabiociljane

naravisobziromnamogućatumačenjanjegoveikonografije?

Naime,mogaojebitiugrađeninekidrugiantičkireljef.No,u

svakomslučaju,antičkijereljefbiobrižnoukomponiran,ugrađen

usrednjovjekovnizvonik.Dakle,nijebiozaklonjen,uzidankao

pukigrađevnimaterijalsfigurama,licempremazidnojmasi.

BiojepostavljentakodabibiouočljivsperistilaDioklecijanove

palače-srednjovjekovnogakatedralnogtrga.Tazapadnastrana

zvonikaponadkatedralnogtrgapročelnejenaravi;stogasu

nanjojugrađeniskupocjenistupoviikomadimramoraunutar

ornamentalnihcjelina,itounižimdijelovima,takodaihse

možesagledati.Natrećemkatu,nakojemjebiougrađenantički

reljef,biloje,činise,najvišemramornihkomada;natomjekatu

spomenutabazaodzrnatog,zelenogmramora.65Navijencukoji

dijeliovajkatodonogponadnjegabilojeugrađenomnoštvo

ulomakaantičkihnatpisa.

Uvijencutrećegkatazvonikabilojeugrađenodvadeset

devetulomakarimskihnatpisaotkrivenih1896.godinetijekom

demontažezvonika.Nekinatpisibilisuuobičajenogasepulkralnog

karaktera,anajednomjepakbilaspomenutacaricaFaustina.66

Načetirivelikepločenekoćugrađeneuzvoniknastavljasekrnji

tekstkojievociragradnjucestaudobacaraTiberijainamjesnika

P.KornelijaDolabelle(CILIII,3198a=10156,a;CILIII,3198,b

=10156,b;CILIII,3200;CILIII,3201=10159).67Nadvijeodtih

ploča,nanjihovimkraćimstranama,karakterističnisumotivi

naizmjeničnihzubaca-pravokutnihtrokuta,dijeloviromaničkog

vijencakojirazdvajatrećiodčetvrtogkata.Dakle,bočnestranetih

pločasnatpisimabilesupriklesaneusrednjemvijekuiiskorištene

apart(athird?)ofthelostwhole.Itshowsagoddesswearinga

crownofthecityrampartsorperhapsamodius;sheissurrounded

byvariousdeities(ordeifiedpersons?).64However,fornowthe

questionoftheoriginofthereliefanditsdating,identificationof

individualfigures,especiallythegoddesswearingacrownofthe

cityrampartsormodius(TycheSalonitana,Cybelle…..)willbeset

aside.Wastheselectionofthisreliefintentionalinnature,given

thepotentialinterpretationofitsiconography?Afterall,some

otherrelieffromAntiquitycouldhavejustaswellbeeninstalled.

However,inanycase,thisreliefwaspainstakinglyincorporatedand

installedinthemedievalbelltower.Itwasthusnotobscuredand

walledinassimpleconstructionmaterialwiththefiguresandface

placedagainstthemassofthewall.Itwasinstalledtobevisible

fromthePeristyleofDiocletian’sPalace-themedievalcathedral

square.Thiswesternsideofthetowerabovethecathedral’ssquare

hasthefunctionofafaçade;thusexpensivecolumnsandmarble

pieceswithinthedecorativewholewerebuiltintoit,particularly

initslowerportions,sothattheycouldbeobserved.Thethird

floor,wheretheAntiquereliefwasinstalled,appearedtohavethe

mostmarblepieces;theaforementionedbasemadeofgrainy,

greenmarblewasonthisfloor.65NumerousfragmentsofAntique

inscriptionswereinstalledonthecornicethatseparatedthisfloor

fromtheoneabove.

Twenty-ninefragmentsofRomaninscriptions,uncovered

duringdisassemblyofthebelltowerin1896,werebuiltinto

thecorniceonthetower’sthirdfloor.Someinscriptionshada

customarysepulchralcharacter,whileoneevenmentionsthe

EmpressFaustina.66Afragmentedtextthatevokestheconstruction

ofaroadduringthereignofEmperorTiberiusandConsulP.

CorneliusDolabella(C.III.3198a=10156,a;C.3198,b=10156,b;

C.III.3200;CIII.3201=10159)continuesoverfourlargeslabsinstalled

inthetower.67Thecharacteristicmotifontheshortersidesoftwo

oftheseslabsisalternatingdentils-righttriangles,partsofthe

Romanesquecornicethatseparatesthethirdandfourthfloors.

Thelateralsidesoftheseslabswereadditionallycarvedinthe

MiddleAgesandusedascornicesegments.Theinscriptionswere

largelyvisibleevenpriortodismantlingofthetower,becausethey

wereknowntoexistsincetheseventeenthcentury,fromthetime

spominjeSalonu:SALON(…).72Uništavanjenatpisasvjedoči

oposvemašnjemnepoštivanjuantičkogspomenika,kojije

iskorištenkaopukakamenagrađa.73Sobziromnadužinukonzole

(oko120cm),radiloseoiznimnomonumentalnomnatpisus

nekogjavnogspomenika;srednjovjekovnakonzolaje,naime,tek

komadisklesanodvećegbloka.

Onthebacksideofaconsolefromthebelltower,theremains

ofadamagedinscriptioncanbeseenonwhichapartoftheword

mentioningSalona:SALON(…)72canbeseen.Destructionofthe

inscriptiontestifiestotheoutrightdisrespectforamonumentof

Antiquity,whichwasusedassimplestoneconstructionmaterial.73

Giventhelengthoftheconsole(approximately120cm),this

wasanexceptionallymonumentalinscriptionfromapublic

monument;themedievalconsoleis,infact,simplyapiececarved

outofamuchlargerblock.

Tobesure,individualspolia,justasconstructionstone,were

usedformereutilitarianreasonsasconstructionmaterials.Someof

thestonefromthebelltowerwassoldafteritsrestoration,andthen

oncemoreusedasconstructionmaterial.74TheruinsofSalonaand

Diocletian’sPalaceservedasalargequarryforoveramillennium,

whencestonewastakentolocationsthroughoutDalmatia,and

eventoVenice.75Ithasbeennotedthatindividualcollapsed

portionsofDiocletian’sPalaceitselfwereusedasstonematerials.

Intheporticoaroundthecathedral,Split’sdignitaries,priorsand

archbishopswereinterredinmodifiedancientsarcophagi,but

Francisca(+1429),themotherofArchbishopDomniodeJudicibus,

whofledtoHungarybeforetheVenetians,wasinterredina

sarcophagusthatwascarvedoutofapieceofthearchitrave.76

Somespoliaonthetowerunderwentmultipleuse,particularly

thosepartsmadeofmarble.Marble,whichwasusedintheMiddle

Agesandevenlater,particularlyduringthebaroque,wasgenerally

obtainedfromruinsthatdatedtoAntiquity.Thetowerthuscontains

aninstalledcolumncoveredwithbraiddecorations-acomponent

oftheearlymedievalchurchscreen;thispieceofmarblewasthus

usedseveraltimes.77Thebelltowerthusnotonlycontainedspolia

fromAntiquity,butalsomedievalspolia.Inthismanner,aciborium

fragmentcarvedfromProconesemarblewasthusalsoinstalled,78as

werefragmentsofmedievalciboriacarvedinlimestone.79

Naravno,pojedinispoliji,kaoisamokamenjezagradnju

korištenisunaprostoizutilitarnihrazloga,kaograđevinski

materijal.Samokamenjeizzvonikajenakonnjegoveobnovebilo

prodano,tejeponovnoiskorištenokaograđevinskimaterijal.74

RuševineSaloneiDioklecijanovepalačeslužilesuvišeodtisućljeća

kaovelikikamenolomizkojegseodvaljivalokamenje,kojeje

potomraznošenoširomDalmacije,paiuVeneciju.75Spomenuli

smodasukaokamenagrađaslužiliipojediniurušenidijelovi

sameDioklecijanovepalače.Utrijemuokokatedralesplitski

dostojanstvenici,prioriinadbiskupipokopanisuunutarpreinačenih

antičkihsarkofaga,noFranciska(+1429.),majkanadbiskupa

DujmadeJudicibusa,kojijepredMlečanimapobjegaouUgarsku,

pokopanajeusarkofagukojijeizdubljenukomaduarhitrava.76

Nekispolijinazvonikuvišestrukosukorišteni,posebnooni

izrađeneumramoru.Mramor,kojisekoristiousrednjemvijekupai

kasnije,osobitotijekombaroknograzdoblja,uglavnomjepribavljan

izantičkihruševina.Takojeuzvonikbiougrađenstupacprekriven

pleternimukrasima-diomramorneranosrednjovjekovnecrkvene

ograde;tajkomadmramorabiojedaklekorištennekolikoputa.77

Uzvoniksudaklebiliugrađivaninesamoantičkispolijinegoi

oniranosrednjovjekovni,pajetakobiouzidaniulomakciborija

isklesanuprokoneškommramoru;78takođersubiliugrađeniiulomci

ranosrednjovjekovnogciborijaisklesaniuvapnencu.79

Kapiteli i stupovi kao spoliji

Nemasumnjedajevelikibrojkapitela,aliistupova,posebno

onihisklesanihodmramoraigranita,antičkogporijekla.Na

donjimkatovimazvonika,posebnonapročelnojstrani,gotovo

svikapitelisu,kakojenaglašeno,korintskogtipa,uključujući

pojedinevarijacijekompozitnogtipa.Dakako,prijerestauracije

onisubiliizantičkog,odnosnokasnoantičkogdoba.Nakon

restauracijedionjihjezamijenjenkopijama.

Ugornjimkatovimapostavljenisukapitelismotivom

zadebljanoglišćaili,preciznije,oblikapoputstiliziranihpalminih

grana.Nažalost,tisukapiteli,kaoiostaliukrasisistimmotivom,

zamijenjeninovima,doksuoriginalimanjimdijelomsačuvaniu

Solinu,uTusculumu.Iznimnojevelikavarijacijakapitelaovogtipa.

Razlikujusepoobliku,podimenzijamaiukrasima.Naponekima

jesamojedanredglatkihlistova(grana),stimedabrojlistova

varira.Napojedinimkapitelimadvasuredalistova(grana),na

drugimapaktrireda.Naponekimaseugornjemdijelupojavljuje

ispupčenjeilipakrozeta.Nanajsloženijimkapitelimaovogtipa

Capitals and columns as spolia

TherecanbenodoubtoftheAntiquepedigreeofalarge

numberofcapitals,andalsocolumns(especiallythosecarvedfrom

marbleandgranite).Onthetower’slowerfloors,particularlyon

thefront,almostallcapitalsare,asnotedpreviously,Corinthian,

includingindividualvariationsofcompositetype.Tobesure,prior

torestorationtheydatedbacktoClassicalandLateAntiquity.After

restoration,someofthemwerereplacedwithcopies.

Ontheupperfloorscapitalswithfullleavesor,moreprecisely,

stylizedpalmbranches,wereinstalled.Unfortunately,these

capitals,liketherestofthedecorationswiththesamemotif,were

replacedwithnewones,whiletheoriginalswerepreserved,to

alesserdegree,intheTusculuminSolin.Thevariationamong

capitalsofthistypeisexceptionallygreat.Theydifferinterms

ofform,dimensionsanddecoration.Onsomethereisonlya

singlerowofsmoothleaves(branches),althoughthenumberof

leavesvaries.Onindividualcapitals,therearetworowsofleaves

(branches),whileothershavethree.Onsomeprotrusionsoreven

rosettesappearontheupperportions.Volutesalsoappearonthe

mostcomplexcapitalsofthistype.80

Thereisnodoubtthatmostofthesecapitalsarecopiesof

thosefromClassicalAntiquity.Namely,twocapitalsofthistype

havebraiddecorationscarvedintothem.81Aheadwithleadinserts

intheeyesocketswascarvedontoonecapital.Thehexefoilon

individualcapitalsalsoindicatesthattheywerecarvedinthe

MiddleAges.Capitalswithbroadenedsmoothleaves(branches)

were,nonetheless,alsocarvedduringtheMiddleAges.82

Evenso,onemayassumethatsomecapitalsofthistypedate

backtoAntiquityandthattheywerebuiltintothemedieval

towerasspolia.Oneofthesecapitalshasaregular,classicalform,

exhibitingfinecraftsmanship,sothatitmaybeofAntiqueorigin.83

Capitalsofthistypecanbefoundinthecemeterybasilicain

ManastirineinSolin,84andtheywerealsousedasspoliainthe

EarlyChristianChurchofSanSebastianinRome;theydatetothe

secondcenturyAD.85Antiquecapitalswithsmooth,broadened

Twocapitalsalongthewallofthevaultedpassageatthe

differconsiderablyfromtherest,asseeninthesketchmadebyA.

Hauser.91Oneofthemwasdecoratedwitharowofsmoothleaves,

whileanotherwasshapedlikeacompressedvolute.Theremaining

capitalsofthefirstfloorwereCorinthian.Unfortunately,thesetwo

exceptionallyshapedcapitalswereremovedduringrestoration

andreplacedwithnewCorinthiancapitals,perhapsforthesake

ofstylisticuniformity.92However,thisentireseriesofcapitals

abovethemarbleandgranitecolumnsonthefirstfloorofthe

belltower,bothinsideandout,inthepassageabovethestairway,

shouldactuallydemonstratewealthanddiversity.Thedifferent

typesofcapitalontheentirebelltower,notjustonthefirstfloor,

shouldbeinterpretedbytheaestheticidealofdiversity:varietas.93

tipa.Nažalost,tasudvakapitelaiznimnihoblikatijekomrestauracije

uklonjenaizamijenjenanovimkorintskimkapitelima,valjdazbog

stilskedosljednosti.92No,cijelijetajnizkapitelaponadstupova

odmramoraigranitanaprvomkatuzvonika,navanjskojstrani,

kaoisunutrašnjestrane,uprolazuponadstubišta,trebaoupravo

naznačitibogatstvoiraznolikost.Naime,različitetipovekapitelana

cijelomzvoniku,nesamonaprvomkatu,trebatumačitiestetskim

idealomraznolikosti-varietas.93 Nažalost,prilikomrestauracijeto

nijebiloshvaćenonipoštivano.

Ekskurs o izvornoj posveti poligonalnog hrama

AntičkekapitelekojiseuliteraturinavodekaoCorinthian

capitals with full leaves, by plain leaves,corona of smooth

prepoznajemo,međutim,kaoderivatekasnoegipatskihkapitelau

oblikupalminihgrana.Takvimlistovimaukrašenisupolukapiteli

nastubunakrižanjuuzdužneipoprečneuliceuDioklecijanovoj

palači.94Odaklenazvonikutakvobogatstvovarijacijakapitela

ovogtipa?Jesulimoždausrednjemvijekubilividljiviostaci

nekezgradeuSaloniili,vjerojatnije,usamojPalačinakojojsuse

nalazilikapiteliiukrasiuoblikuglatkihlistova(grana)?Dakle,jesu

lisrednjovjekovnikapitelinazvonikumogliimatiuzoreuPalačii

uSolinuilisuonipakopćemjestoromaničkogstila,kadsečesto

slijedeantičkiuzori?

Moždasukapiteliuoblikustiliziranihpalminihgranabili

vezaniuzkultIzide,zakojiuDioklecijanovojpalačiimadovoljno

naznaka:jedanreljefsprikazomSerapisanakasetistrijema

poligonalnoghrama,nekolikosfinga,granitnistupovi….95Nakult

IzideiOzirisa(Serapisa),upraviluvezanuzvodu,upućujuiterme

uneposrednojblizinihramova,ausamompoligonalnomhramu,

ukriptisrednjovjekovnekatedraleskupljasevodaupodnom

udubljenjuzakojusevjerovalodaječudotvorna.96Kaoanalogiju

spominjemo,primjerice,zvoniksvetištaSS.Crocifissougradu

Treia(Trea),ukojisu biliuzidaniulomcištosupripadalirazličitim

figuramaegipatskogporijekla;toupućujenapostojanjekultnog

mjestaposvećenogegipatskimbožanstvima,osobitoSerapisu.U

blizinitogsvetištanalazeseizvorivodekojisutakođerindicijaza

Antiquecapitalscitedintheliteratureas“Corinthiancapitals

recognizedasderivativesofthelateEgyptiancapitalsshapedlike

palmbranches.Thesetypeofleavesdecoratethesemi-capitalson

thepostattheintersectionofthelateralandperpendicularstreets

inDiocletian’sPalace.94Howisitthatthetowerhassuchawealth

ofvariationincapitalsofthistype?Wasitthecasethatduringthe

MiddleAgestheremainsofsomebuildinginSolinor,morelikely,

inthePalaceitselfwhichhadsmooth-leaf(branch)capitalsand

decorationswerestillvisible?Inotherwords,couldthemedieval

capitalsonthebelltowerhavehadtheirexemplarsinthePalace

orSolin,orweretheyjustareflectionofthegeneralRomanesque

trend,whichoftenadheredtomodelsfromAntiquity?

Perhapsthesecapitalsshapedlikestylizedpalmbrancheswere

linkedtothecultofIsis,ofwhichthereissufficientindicationin

Diocletian’sPalace:onereliefdepictingSerapisonthecassette

fromtheporticoofthepolygonaltemple,severalsphinxes,

granitecolumns…95ThecultofIsisandOsiris(Serapis)-generally

associatedwithwater-isalsoindicatedbythebathsinthe

immediatevicinityofthetemples,whileinthepolygonaltemple

itself,water(believedtobemiraculous)gathersincryptofthe

medievalcathedralinatroughonthefloor.96Anexampleofan

analogyisthebelltowerfromtheSS.Crocifissoshrineinthecity

ofTrea,wherefragmentswerebuiltinthatbelongedtovarious

figuresofEgyptianorigin;thisindicatestheexistenceofacult

sitededicatedtoEgyptiandeities,particularlySerapis.Thereare

sourcesofwaternearthisshrinewhichalsoindicatethecultof

Serapis(Osiris),97becausewaterandcryptsarecustomaryinthe

shrinestothisdeity.98

AsopposedtotheotherDalmatiancities,Splitdidnotbuild

itsowncathedral,ratheramodifiedpagantemplefunctionsas

thecathedraltothisday.Thus,arepresentativebelltowerhadto

beconstructed-iffornootherreasonthantohaveacampanile

-particularlytoremainonparwithrivalTrogirintheimmediate

vicinity.Zadarconstructedacathedralatthesiteoftheprevious,

EarlyChristianbuilding,butonlythebaselevelofthebelltower

wasbuilt,whiletherestwasonlyconstructedinthenineteenth

century.InDalmatia,themosttypicalbelltowersarethosein

svojukatedralu,negojedodanasufunkcijikatedraleostao

preinačenipoganskihram.Stogaje,baremizkampanilističkih

razloga,trebaloizgraditireprezentativnizvonik,pogotovoda

bisepariralorivalskomeTrogiruuneposrednojblizini.Zadarje

izgradionovukatedralunamjestuonestarije,ranokršćanske,no

usrednjemvijekupodignutojesamopodnožjezvonika,asam

zvonikjesagrađentekuXIX.stoljeću.UDalmacijisusvakako

najreprezentativnijizvonicigradaRaba.Splitje,dakle,kao

središtenadbiskupije,kadvećnijeizgradionovukatedralu,svoju

društvenuenergijuusmjeriopremagradnjivelebnogzvonika.

Postavljasepitanjeorazlozimatakovelikogbrojaantičkih

spolijausrednjovjekovnomzvonikusplitskekatedrale.Naravno,

značajnisupritomsvakakobili,kakosmovećnaglasili,iutilitarni

razlozi:obiljevećgotovekamenegrađeizporušenihzdanjau

DioklecijanovojpalačiinedalekomSolinu.No,nesumnjivojeda

velikibrojspolijaimasimboličkuvrijednost.Otučeniipriklesani

rimskinatpisiukazujunaravnodušnostpremaantičkojbaštini,

nounekimslučajevima,kakosmovećnaznačili,očitisuelementi

uvažavanjastarina,osobitouslučajuugradnjeantičkogreljefa.

Splitjegradiosvojmitoporijeklunastavljajućisenaantičku

baštinu.Splićanisu,tvrdilose,potomciizbjeglicaizporušene

Salone.99SplitskacCrkvapakstječesvojstatusnadbiskupije

prikazujućiseizravnomnasljednicomonesalonitanske.Usplitskoj

katedrali,nekadašnjempoligonalnomhramu,štujuserelikvije

Thequestionarisesastothereasonsforsuchalargenumber

ofspoliafromAntiquityonthemedievalbelltoweroftheSplit

cathedral.Tobesure,asalreadynoted,utilitarianreasonswere

alsocertainlysignificant:theabundanceofalreadyfinishedstone

materialsfromthedemolishedbuildingsinDiocletian’sPalaceand

innearbySolin.However,thereisnodoubtthatalargenumber

ofspoliahadsymbolicvalue.Brokenandthenre-affixedRoman

inscriptionsindicatealackofconcernfortheRoman-eraheritage,

butinsomecases,asalreadynoted,thereareobviousindications

ofappreciationofantiquities,particularlyintheinstallationof

reliefsfromthatera.

Splitdevelopedthemythofitsoriginsbybuildingonthe

heritageofAntiquity.Split’snativeswere,itwasclaimed,the

descendentsofrefugeesfromthedestroyedSalona.99Thechurch

inSplitsecureditsstatusasanarchdiocesebyproclaiming

itselfthedirectsuccessortotheSalonaarchdiocese.IntheSplit

cathedral,formerlyapolygonaltemple,therelicsoftheSalona

martyrsDomnio(Domnius)andAnastasiusarerevered,even

thoughtheiractualrelicsarepreservedinRomeaswell,inthe

baptisteryoftheLateranBasilica.Theeasternwallofthetower

inthecathedral’svestibulefeaturesareliefcarvedbytheMaster

Oto,withparadigmaticcontent:itdepictstheSalonamartyrs,the

gradaSplitaiz1312.spominjuseSalonaipalača:Palatium letum,

Spalatum Salone quietum;tajjetekstbioupisaniugradski

pečatnjak.Dakle,SalonaiDioklecijanovapalačaupravosuosnovni

elementiprogramakojioblikujeidentitetSplita.Jestdasutajmit

ipovijesnaimaginacijasastavljeniodopćihmjesta(bjegunciiz

Salone,poputbjegunacaizTroje),nopovijestjesnažnoprisutna

iinspirativnazadomišljanjaposvojimmaterijalnimostacima,

ruševinamaSaloneipreostacimaDioklecijanovepalače.102Bilo

jevjerojatnoiponekihelementaživepredaje,posebnoonekoju

prenosiimodulirasamaCrkva.103Utomkontekstutrebashvatiti

poputvelikoglapidarija,vertikalekojaimapretenzijadanaznači

thethirteenthcentury,Splitwasmaturingintoanautonomous

communeunderthesuzeraintyoftheHungarian-Croatiankings.

Duringthattime,ArchdeaconThomas,theideologueofcommunal

autonomy,wrotehishistoryoftheSalonaandSplitbishops,in

whichheroundedoffthehistoryofhiscitybylinkingittoSalona

andDiocletian’sPalace.Onemythwasthusalreadycompletely

formed:neitherEmperorDiocletiannorhispalacewereever

forgotten.Afterall,theIntroductiontotheStatuteoftheCity

ofSplitof1312alsomentionsSalonaandthePalace:Palatium

letum, Spalatum Salone quietum;thistextwasalsoplacedonthe

city’sseal.Thus,SalonaandDiocletian’sPalaceareactuallythe

fundamentalcomponentsemployedtoformSplit’sidentity.Itis

truethatthismythandthehistoricalimaginationwerecomposed

ofgenerallyusedtropes(exilesfromSalona,liketheexilesfrom

Troy),buttheintenseandinspiringpresenceofhistoryfedthis

imaginationbymeansofthephysicalevidenceseenintheruins

ofSalonaandtheremainsofDiocletian’sPalace.102Elementsof

alivingoraltraditionprobablyalsoexisted,particularlythose

conveyedandmodulatedbytheChurchitself.103Thespoliafrom

AntiquityonthebelltowerofSplit’scathedralshouldalsobe

viewedinthiscontext.Thetowergivestheimpressionofan

immensemuseumdisplaycase,atowerthathaspretensions

toachronologicaldimension,springingforthfromSalonaand

Diocletian’sPalace.Thisheritageandhistorywerethecornerstone

ofthefutureofthecitywhosechurchwasattemptingtoimpose

itsauthorityovertheterritoryoftheformergreatRomanprovince

ofDalmatia(Illyricum).
