Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment

of all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes

been called the

birthday of the church. One last

time we are re-minded that we

Christians have re-

ceived the Holy Spirit, not for our

own benefit, but to enable us to follow

our Christian voca-

tion.

The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the ac-count in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy

Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday

help us to understand what it means to live out our Chris-tian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that

the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and

Sons of Orpheus – Gratitude Concert Our parish has provided a rehearsal space for the Sons of Or-pheus during this past concert year. In gratitude, this all men’s chorus will offer our parish a free-will offering concert (to benefit the parish) on this Sunday, 20 May from 4 until 5 PM in Nicholson Hall. The concert will fea-ture selections from their Spring Concerts: works by Puccini, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Woody Guthrie, and Leonard Cohen, among others. Parodies feature promi-nently in the concert, which will also feature outstand-ing young guest artists. Unusual percussion instruments, as well as bass, guitar, and banjo accompany some selections. Our par-ish Development Board will provide light snacks and beverages to be enjoyed during the concert.

Hijos de Orfeo – Concierto de Gratitud Nuestra parroquia ha prestado un área de ensayo a los Hijos de Orfeo durante este pasado año de conciertos. En gratitud, este

coro de hombres ofrecerá a nuestra parroquia un concier-to de libre voluntad (a beneficio de la parroquia) este do-mingo, 20 de mayo de 4 a 5 pm en Nicholson Hall. Deacon Manu Franco, O.Carm. to Be Ordained a Priest

Having completed his theological studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, Deacon Manu, who served as a Carmelite intern here in our parish from September 2015 through June 2016, will be ordained to the priesthood this coming Saturday, 26 May. The celebration will take place in his home parish in Tepatilan, Jalis-co, Mexico. He will celebrate a Mass of Thanks-giving the following day.

His first assignment as a priest will be… Campus Ministry at Salpointe Catholic High School.

Tidbits from the Pantry Recently our St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Pantry had a surprise visit from St. Cyril School Girl Scout Troop 193 who brought a wagon loaded with 79 brown lunch bags filled with a variety of snacks for the poor. They had purchased the snacks with some of the profit from their Girl Scout Cookie sales They were excited about helping SVdP, as well as hearing all about SVdP and what we do. Thank you Girl Scouts for your love of the poor and wanting to help.

Another surprise we had was a delivery of a couple of dozen or so peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made by a St Cyril Jr. High student, Stella, who wanted to do volunteer hours for SVdP. Thank you Stella, for your desire to help the poor and for being an example for all of us.

These projects may not sound like much to you, but believe us, they are!!

Last month, the St. Cyril School Leadership Group spear-headed a Food Drive within the school that brought in many cans of food for our Pantry. Families made sacrifices. We thank all of the families who participated. It helped to keep our gro-cery bill down. Every bit of involvement helps in caring for the poor.

Citas de Nuestra Despensa Recientemente, nuestra Despensa de San Vicente de Paúl (SVdP) tuvo una visita sorpresa de las Girl Scout Tropa 193 de Escolar San Cirilo que trajo un carro cargado con 79 bolsas marrones de almuerzo llenas con variedad de alimento para los pobres. Las Girl Scouts habrían comprado esto con parte de las ganancias de sus ventas de galletas. Estaban entusias-madas de ayudar a SVdP, así como de escuchar todo sobre SVdP y lo que hacemos. Gracias Girl Scouts por su amor a los pobres y su deseo de ayudar.

Otra sorpresa que tuvimos fue la entrega de unas docenas de sándwiches de mantequilla de maní y gelatina hechos por Stella, una estudiante de San Cirilo Jr. High, que quería hacer

horas de servicio para SVdP. Gracias, Stella, por tu deseo de ayudar a los pobres y por ser un ejemplo para todos nosotros.

¡¡Puede que estos proyectos no te parezcan grandes, ¡pero créenos que lo son!!

El mes pasado, el Grupo de Liderazgo Escolar San Cirilo, encabezó una Campaña de Alimentos dentro de la escuela y trajeron muchas latas de comida para nuestra despensa. Las familias se sacrificaron. Agradecemos a todas las familias que participaron. Esto ayudó a mantener baja nuestra factura de alimentos. Cada participación con-tribuye al cuidado de los pobres.

Religious Education Registration for the 2018–19 Catechetical year will be the first weekend in August. Parents may register their child/ren for sacrament preparation at that time. Cat-echesis for Reconciliation and First Communion is of-fered to children of eight years of age and older. Prep-aration is a two consecutive year process. The child must have been baptized in a Roman Catholic Church and must attend classes weekly.

Baptism Preparation Sessions Parents of infants and/or toddlers who wish to have them baptized are required to participate in Baptism Prepara-tion Sessions. These two-day series are only offered five times a year, and not every month, so parents need to plan ahead.

The next series will be in June: in English on Thursday eve-nings, 7 & 14 June, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM; and in Spanish on Monday evenings, 4 & 11 June, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. If you, or someone you know, is planning to baptize a child in July, August or September, this is the series in preparation for those baptism celebrations. The series will not be offered again until September.

Preparación Bautismal Padres que deseen bautizar a sus bebés y niños pequeños nece-sitan asistir a las sesiones de preparación bautismal. Las sesiones de dos días solo se ofrecen cinco veces al año, no cada mes, así que los padres deben planear con tiempo.

La próxima serie de clases será en junio: en español los lunes por la noche los días 4 y 11 de junio de 6:30 pm a 8:30 pm y en inglés los jueves por la noche los días 7 y 14 de junio de 6:30 pm a 8:30 pm. Si usted, o alguien que conoce, tiene pensado bautizar un hijo/a en los meses de julio, agosto, o septiembre, estas son las sesiones para esas celebraciones bautismales. No ofreceremos de nuevo las sesiones has-ta Septiembre.

Easter Time – a 50-Day Feast We are very familiar with Lent being a period of 40 days. Less familiar is that Easter is a period of 50 days. It is often thought of as one Sunday (Easter Sunday), but it is a sea-son from the 1st Sunday of Easter through Pentecost Sunday (pente, the Greek word for fifty).

In another way of counting, Easter is 8 Sun-days forming a “great octave”. In our Catholic tradition, 8 is a symbolic number for the “new creation” building upon the 7 days of creation. The 8th day begins the new creation. For this reason, it is very common for baptismal fonts to be 8 sided (as is ours), for in the waters of baptism we become a new creation in Christ.

Recognizing that Easter is a season (50 days or 8 weeks), our parish maintains its Easter decorations for this full period of time. To do so is a bit of an expense, so we appreciate that many contributed to the Easter Flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. Below is a listing of in whose honor or memory our flowers have been funded.

Tiempo de Pascua – 50 Días de Fiesta Estamos ya acostumbrados a que la Cuaresma es un periodo de 40 días. Lo que no sabemos es que realmente la Pascua es un periodo de 50 días. Siempre se ha pensado en un domingo (Domingo de Pascua), pero real-

mente el periodo es del primer Domingo de Pascua hasta el Domingo de Pentecostés (pente, la palabra griega que signi-fica cincuenta).

Como una manera diferente de contar, la Pascua contiene 8 domingos formando “la gran octava”. En nuestra tradición Católica, 8 es un numero simbólico para la “nueva creación” basadas en los 7 días de la creación. El octavo día comienza la nueva creación. Por esta razón, es muy común ver las fuentes bautismales de 8 lados (como la nuestra), así en las aguas del bautismo nos convertimos en una nueva creación en Cristo.

Reconociendo así que la Pascua es un periodo (50 días u 8 domingos), nuestra parroquia mantiene las decoraciones de

Pascua por ese periodo completo, y al hacerlo corremos con gastos. Así que estamos muy agradecidos por todas las contribuciones recibidas para las flores de Pascua en honor o en memoria de un ser querido. A conti-nuación esta una lista de las personas por las cuales estas flores fueron ofrecidas.

Diocese of Tucson Padre Kino Cup Next Weekend

Kino Sports Complex – North Stadium The Diocesan Vocations Office will be hosting the 4th Annual Padre Kino Cup Soccer Tournament. Each day of next weekend there is a specific event:

Friday, 25 May, at 6:30 PM

A soccer match between the priests and seminarians from the Diocese of Tucson. Join in the fun at the Kino Sports Complex in the North Stadium. The priests will be defending last year’s win.

Saturday, 26 May, 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM

The Youth and Young Adult Tournament games will be on Fields 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Kino Sports Complex.
