FEEDING THE WORLD
With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” ex-pressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one
body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the won-ders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” oth-ers as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and al-ways seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright © J. S. ALIMENTANDO AL MUNDO
Al oír las narraciones de cómo Eliseo y Jesús multiplican los alimentos, y el salmo responsorial sobre como la mano del Señor nos alimenta, es fácil caer en la tentación de pasar por alto el maravilloso himno de la carta a los efesios en la Segunda lectura. El himno se centra en los números más po-tentes de la tradición bíblica: el uno, el tres y el siete. La médula del himno es el núme-ro uno, repetido siete veces. Tres de ellas se refieren a la Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, un
solo Espíritu, como también una sola es la esperanza. Los próximas tres son los fundamentos de la Iglesia: un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo. Y todos estos se juntan en un solo Dios y Padre de todos. La idea de repetir los milagros obrados por Eliseo y por Jesús al alimentar las multitudes nos desalienta, claro está, pero la carta a los efesios nos ofrece un modo más realizable de vivir como Iglesia y de alimentar a los demás en la Iglesia: ser siempre humildes y amables; ser comprensivos y sopor-tarnos mutuamente con amor, y esforzarnos en mantenernos unidos en el Espíritu con el vínculo de la paz. ¿Quién de nosotros no puede “alimentar” a la comunidad de la Iglesia viviendo de esta manera? Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a “alimentar” al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero nuestra misión como Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en que vivimos y ac-tuamos cada momento de cada día. Panhandlers at the Parish From time to time, especially when our community gathers for Sunday Mass, various persons come around looking for money. They usually have a con-vincing story of need. However, very often they are not true. In fact what they are doing is preying upon our Christian charity. If you are approached by some-one please let them know that we have a social out-reach ministry with our St. Vincent de Paul Society and/or that you donate to specific causes to help the poor and needy. You could also indicate that there are signs on our property that indicate that soliciting funds is not permitted.

Exploring Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment
Our Mother of Sorrows Parish is planning a three person panel discussion on the Encyclical. The panel members all are OMOS parishioners: Katie Hirschboeck, Hank Krzysik, and Deacon Francisco Zamora. The dis-cussions will take place on four consecutive Monday evenings in the early fall. All three panelists are emi-nently qualified to facilitate the sessions.
Katie Hirschboeck, an OMOS parishioner for 24 years, is a University of Arizona climate scientist in the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research with over 30 years of experience.
Hank Krzysik, an OMOS parishioner for 32 years, is a LEED-certified architect with 22 years of experience in energy effi-ciency and renewable energy design. He currently serves as a commissioner on the Pima County/City of Tucson Metropolitan Energy Commission, as well as chairman and policy advisor for the Pima County Interfaith Council’s Green Team. At OMOS, he serves as chair for the Care for Creation Initiative and other committees.
Deacon Francisco Zamora, an OMOS parishioner for 13 years, has served as a deacon there since 2012. He also is a scientist and conservationist, with nearly 20 years of experi-ence working on conservation and management of natural re-sources, particularly on water issues and river restoration. He is the Director of the Colorado River Delta Legacy Program.

La Parroquia de Our Mother of Sorrows está planeando una discusión en un panel de tres personas sobre la Encíclica. Once again this year, we will celebrate Confirmation in our parish at the end of November. In preparation for this, we will be offering a preparation series in English for adult Catholics (18 years or older) who were baptized and have received First Communion but have not been confirmed. If you haven’t been confirmed and would like to celebrate this sacrament, details are available from Fr. Edgar ([email protected] or 795-1633 x 111).

The Level I Certification program comprised of 52 two-hour sessions will be offered in Spanish beginning in August and is open to all people of the Diocese.
