There was great excitement in our house on 19 April when our youngest son Louis returned home. Hed spent nearly seven months in Australia and had a short visit to Thailand to round off his trip abroad.Wearing a healthy tan and sporting long dreadlocks, bleached blond by the Aussie sunshine, he looked taller than when he left. It was a joyous homecoming and what an amazing time hed had.Will we see him back at the office? Well Australia has had a huge impact on him and made him realise that he prefers the great outdoors to being cooped up in an office. In Australia, he spent a long time working on the land and living in a tepee. We will no doubt benefit from his design skills, but he is keen to source some gardening work on a freelance basis because he loves being outdoors. I remember telling you how hard last months magazine was to pull together. Well this one was even worse. My poor Mum ended up in hospital with a bad case of shingles and she really was ill. Luckily she is back home now and has recovered remarkably well. But please take heed. If you get an unexplained rash on your body, dont ignore it. Get to the doctor and have it checked out. If shingles gets a grip, it really is nasty.To round off, let me tell you that this magazine is brimming with news, features and competitions. A bench and table worth over 300 for your garden is just one of the prizes on offer this month. Enjoy!

Congratulations to James Garland from Cranborne who won the mags4dorset Spot the Bunny competition in the March issue of 4Dorset.Five-year-old James attends Cranborne First School

and loves puzzles. His mother Paula said, He particularly likes spot the difference. This competition was right up his street. He did it on his own as spotting the bunnies was a fun thing to do. Paula had picked up 4Dorset whilst shopping in Wimborne and was very glad she did.

She accompanied James to collect his chocolate egg from Graham Palmer at The Square Corner in Wimborne who sponsored the prize. James couldnt stop smiling when the egg was presented to him.

Judging by the number of incorrect answers that flooded in, this competition was much harder than it seemed. Well done James.

Beacon Project

Christchurch Borough Council is looking to make improvements to Stanpit Recreation Ground and is asking local people to give their opinions on the scheme.

The suggested improvements include a dog agility area, cycle racks and a priority cycle lane, new play structures and picnic areas for families, improvements to vehicle and pedestrian access at the entrance and a larger car park. A more varied and attractive landscape will also be created establishing patches of wild flowers and meadow alongside existing mown areas.

Matti Raudsepp, Head of Leisure and Open Spaces for the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership said, We would encourage everyone with an interest in the site to give us their thoughts.

The public consultation runs until 31 May and responses can be given online at www.dorsetforyou.com/stanpitrec. Paper copies are also available at the Civic Offices, Steamer Point and Stanpit Marsh Information Centres, Christchurch and Highcliffe Libraries and the Christchurch Information Centre.

St Marys Church in Ferndown has submitted a planning application to East Dorset District Council for the Beacon Project.

The aim of the project is to develop the churchs current buildings and grounds, to make St Marys more accessible and to benefit all members of the community. The scheme includes the building of a church lounge with hot drinks facilities to serve as a community meeting place and to link the church and hall buildings together. There are plans to extend the current rooms and to landscape the grounds.

Ferndown NeighbourCare a fully self-funding scheme that provides transport for the over 55s to hospital, doctors, dentists, shopping and social visits has just made a charitable donation. Joyce Little says, Due to the generosity of our clients, NeighbourCare has already made donations to several local charities and groups. We are now turning our support to animals and have donated 1,000 to Waggy Tails.

NeighbourCare also needs new volunteer drivers to meet increasing demand. A mileage allowance is paid.

Churchs centenary

Do you agree with the Local Government Boundary Commission for Englands draft proposals of the new council ward changes? The Commission has proposed that East Dorset District Council should have 29 councillors, seven fewer than the current arrangements. Recommendations also outline how those councillors should represent seven single-member, five two-member and four three-member wards across the district. Charity of the Year

It never ceases to amaze me just how our branch manages to survive financially in these days of cutbacks and restraint.

Money can be difficult to generate and because our running costs are in the region of 170,000 per annum, raising sufficient funds is crucial. As we are autonomous and unfortunately receive no local or national funding, we need to rely on the general public for financial support.

We have a great team of fundraisers who organise spring, summer, autumn and Christmas fairs, quiz evenings and theme nights throughout the year. New supporters are always welcome, so why not ring us to check our forthcoming events?

Teams coordinate street collections, often braving the great British weather, raising thousands of pounds for us. Last July we were fortunate when being chosen

by Sainsburys Ferndown as their charity for the year, enabling regular collections at their store.

Another source of much needed revenue comes from our in-house shop called Aladdins Cave. Members and guests can browse its well-stocked shelves before buying that elusive article or gift that youve always wanted but never knew where to purchase. All the donated items displayed for sale are of good quality and very reasonably priced. Why not visit us

to check it out or even donate that unwanted present, to help raise funds for our Centre.

The skys the limit for our brilliant supporters who raise money by getting sponsored. Whether its jumping out of aeroplanes, running marathons, baking cakes or any of the other 1001 ideas that these wonderful people think up in order to help us, they can be assured that every penny raised supports local people with MS and their families.

In response to questions at the Ferndown Annual Meeting

of Electors on 10 April, with regard

to keeping pavements clear of obstructions, including over

hanging vegetation and cars parked

illegally, I would encourage residents to work with the tow

n council in keeping our footways clear,

and reporting problems as they occur. This is an importan

t issue affecting disproportionately in

safety terms, the more vulnerable members of our commu

nity.

SSAFA name changeFrom 10 April 2013, the Dorset Branch of military charity SSAFA Forces Help changed its name to SSAFA as part of a rebrand aimed at improving awareness of the charity amongst members of the Forces community.

This is particularly important at a local level where SSAFAs teams of trained volunteers work hard to ensure that help and advice are always close at hand. Last year alone the Dorset Branch supported 410 veterans and their families in our local community.

Families have always been at the heart of what SSAFA does and they have been put at the centre of the brand. The change of name is supported by a modern new logo with a three colour underline to represent the charitys lifelong support to the Navy, Army and RAF.

These changes follow a long period of consultation with volunteers and staff as well as members of the military community. SSAFA has supported our Forces and their families for more than 125 years but the work we do now is more vital than ever before. Its really important that those who serve and those who used to serve in our Forces know that SSAFA is here for them and their families for life.

It has cost the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) around 10,000 to clear two tonnes of rubbish dumped along the A338 Spur Road. It took DWP and Bournemouth Borough Council five nights to clear the five-mile stretch between the Ashley Heath roundabout and Blackwater junction. Among the 1.8 tonnes of rubbish were car tyres and

electrical goods, including six TVs. The DWP is now working with

neighbouring councils and the Highways Agency to clean up other key routes, including the A31 and A35.

It is not surprising that students from across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole wish to apply to FUS after completing their Year 11, as last summers AS results placed the school in the top 10% of schools in the country! Students can follow a wide range of A-level courses leading to university, but there is also a Level 2 programme with excellent links to local employers and apprenticeships. This programme also allows young people to top up their English and Maths grades and

is running ahead of the forthcoming national announcement about the Technical Baccalaureate qualification. Once again Ferndown Upper is at the forefront of educational provision, helping young people achieve the very best, whether aiming for employment or Higher Education.

Alongside these curriculum pathways, staff in the Sixth Form team look after the needs of the students and provide a rich programme of other activities and events. We believe that to be

successful in life, young people need a range of opportunities; whether these relate to participating in a school musical, joining the Sixth Form union, organising fundraising and social events or leading younger students through sports or mentoring. An army regiment paraded through Wimborne on Sunday, 21 April. The Rifles were exercising their freedom of Wimborne Minster, granted to them by the Mayor Cllr John Burden in 2010.

The Freedom Parade started in Allenview Road car park and proceeded to the square where the mayor, by coincidence - Cllr John Burden again - made a welcome speech and handed over a scroll granting the regiment with Freedom of the Town. In return, the mayor was presented with a silver bugle by the Rifles.

The Rector of Wimborne Minster, the Revd Vanessa Herrick also welcomed a congregation to the dedication of a new war memorial plaque, commemorating Wimborne men killed on active service since 1945.

The mayor and the president of Wimborne Royal British Legion unveiled the plaque honouring the people of the town who have given their lives in wars since 1945: CPO Owen WC Aubrey 20/4/1949 China; Pte Arthur G Judge, 23/4/1951 Korea; Tpr Andrew M Howarth, 18/9/2010 Afghanistan.

The Wimborne chaplain to the Royal British Legion, the Revd Alan Davies dedicated the plaque and the memorial exhortation

was followed by a minutes silence and a closing prayer.

The Rifles returned to Allenview car park where their Bugles and Band sounded retreat with a music and marching display.

Her best friends husband, Nick Tanner, provided the clippers. Johns diariesJohn was killed whilst on duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was aged 22 and came from Ferndown. The JTYAF, was set up in his name and on the 5th anniversary of his death, the charity announced the publication of Johns Afghanistan diaries in a new book entitled Helmand: Diaries of Front-Line Soldiers.

With all royalties from sales of the book being split equally between the JTYAF and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, this book will, for the first time, offer an insight into the life that soldiers lead on operational deployment through the diaries of those who serve.

That none of these diaries were ever written with the intention of achieving publication makes them all the more valuable and sincere. Helmand: Diaries of Front-Line Soldiers will be published by Osprey Publishing on 20 May 2013, and is available for pre-order at http://www.amazon.co.uk/ now.

Five years on, John Thorntons legacy still strong The wonderful work of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) continues in his memory.

Founded by Johns parents Linda and Pete Thornton in 2008, the charity supports young peoples ambitions and has made 370 awards totalling over 170,000. A legacy, say his parents, that John would have been proud of.

Just recently, the foundation presented awards to 10 pupils at Ferndown First School. One recipient, a talented dancer was treated to a performance of The Nutcracker by the Moscow Ballet. A years membership to the Intech Science Centre and the Oryx Club at Marwell Zoo was amongst the other awards all intended to give the children a once in a lifetime opportunity to promote their interests further.

The next Ferndown Chamber of Commerce networking event will be on 20 May from 6.30pm-9.30pm at Ferndown Forest Inn.

New Mayor of Wimborne Minster announcedCllr Andy Hampton will be the new mayor elect for Wimborne Minster Town Council. He will succeed Cllr John Burden on the evening of Tuesday 14 May 2013. Cllr Mrs Diann March will be his deputy. A town councillor since 2004, Andy was deputy town mayor during 2012-13. His hobbies include windsurfing, running, cycling and swimming.

Around 60 Ashley Heath residents attended their parish council meeting to voice concern about investigations into whether the village green off Horton Road would be suitable for allotments.

Resident Nick Kenworthy said, The Village Green is where my

children learnt to ride their bikes, play football and just be children in a nice safe area and it should remain so for generations to come.

Mr Ray Richards added that councillors should be listening to the local children and those who play in this field. He said, We will never have an Ashley Heath United if they get rid of the last remaining footy ground.

Cllr Ann Warman, chairman of the allotment sub committee who is heading the investigations said, We have a statutory obligation to look for

sites that could possibly be used for allotments. We are in the early stages of looking into this particular site and there is very little to report so far.

Research by local residents revealed that the land is designated as a village green and development into allotments is prohibited.

The chairman of the parish council agreed to keep everyone informed of developments and would take into consideration all the useful work that had been conducted by local residents.

The newfound skills of Harewood College students saw them achieve victory in the final of the Bournemouth Mayors Senior Schools Chess League last month.

The poll, carried out by LV, a major UK insurer, found significant levels of noncompliance over the past five years and a worrying lack of awareness among householders across the country.

You may have been the first person to cry House when the Regent became a Mecca Bingo Hall in the late 70s. Memories, reminiscences and life changing experiences are being collated in a memory book and memory blog to

COMPETITIONS

Last year was a huge success with hundreds of entries flooding in, said editor and author Janine Pulford. There were far more than we expected. In fact, because we had included articles and poetry, we found the competition rather unwieldy to administer. It was surprising what a lot of extra work it made in the office by adding two more categories and for this reason, we have decided to revert back to running just the Short Story awards this year.

The theme for the short story in 2013 is: Stars in your eyes. It could be a sizzling romance, the quest for stardom or even about stargazers and their accuracy at detecting asteroids on their way to planet Earth. Let your creativity flow, but keep the story to around 1,000 words.

PRIZES: 1st 150, 2nd 50, 3rd 25. The winning entries will also be published in one of our magazines and will appear on the website, where the magazines can be downloaded. The author will retain copyright of their work.

RULES The theme must be followed. Word length is a guideline, but please

keep close to it. All content must be your own work and

your entry must not have been published, won a prize anywhere else or be entered for another competition at the same time.

mags4dorset is running a photographic competition to give local budding photographers the opportunity to produce a front cover shot for 4Dorset magazine. The theme is wildlife and this includes plants and trees as well as animals, birds, amphibians, insects, fish and spiders.

Volkswagen Up!Government cuts have forced James Bond to scrap his Aston Martin DB5 so what should he replace it with? I suspect the secret agent who now favours low-cost city cars - would sell his last shot of Vodka Martini for the Volkswagen up! Why? Because the entry-level Take up! three-door trim only costs 8,095 and is fantastic (just ask Q). Strengths include the sure-footed chassis, nicely weighted steering, and comfortable ride, which make chasing baddies a pleasure. It also has a 1.0-litre petrol engine that could propel 007 to 62mph in 14.4 seconds. Not fast, but fast enough for the class. More importantly for the cash-strapped spy, it averages 62.8mpg and manages 72.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle. These figures are impressive for the money. It can also be taxed for only 20 per-year as its emissions are lower than Bonds morale after

ditching his beloved Aston Martin. And there is more good news. The three-door up! has a respectable 251-litre cargo capacity that can be increased to 951-li-tres by folding the rear seats flat. It therefore has plenty of space for Bonds fancy suits and clever gadgets.

And that brings us to a potential problem. 007 loves gadgets as they help him stop baddies taking over the world and ruining everyones day. So, what a pity that the Take up! is basic compared to his previous cars. As such it has power steering, an immobiliser, and CD player but very little else. Bond could, however, borrow money from one of his countless girlfriends and buy the mid-spec Move up! trim. This adds electric front windows, air-conditioning, and an electronic sta-bility program that makes cornering safer. All from 9,200. The High up! - which starts at 10,665 also has alloy wheels, electric mirrors, and Bluetooth. All are available with three or five doors, the latter being more practical thanks to the easier rear access and slightly larger seat-down cargo capacity. But whichever trim Bond chooses it is guaranteed to make him smile like a mission to chase su-permodels around a five-star hotel. After all, the Volkswagen up! is one of the best city cars on the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality, confident handling, practicality and low running costs. But Bond still pines for his old Aston Martin.
