About the band

Is a Filipino band that was formed in 1993 by a

group of college students. The band is famous and

most lauded for its original rock novelty and often

satirical covers of popular songs. The band has

since transcended musical genres, varying styles

from one song to another - alternative rock to pop

rock, funk to rap core, and so on - while providing

comic relief to their listeners. Despite having "Edgar" in the band's name, none of the

members go by it.

-Naming them Comic Relief, the band originally consisted of three vocalists – Chito Miranda, Jeric Estaco, Vinci Montaner, and two guitarists, Miko Yap and Gab Chee Kee. They constantly played through after-school jam session, before performing an opening number for an Eraserheads concert. This break prompted the band to add a drummer and a bassist – Dindin Moreno andBuwi Meneses respectively. The same performance also marked the change of the band's name to Parokya ni Edgar.[2] After

Page 3: 5 opm songs

high school, Miko and Jeric left the band to pursue other interests. As a replacement, the remaining band members invited to their fold, guitarist Darius Semaña (lead guitar).

-The name Parokya Ni Edgar came from a joke answer Jeric Estaco gave during

Philippine History class, when the teacher asked him where Jose Rizal's fictional hero,

Crisostomo Ibarra (in the novel Noli Me Tangere), was educated.

The band soon started playing at the legendary local band hub, Club Dredd, coming out

during the height of the Pinoy rock explosion, with the Filipino rock community giving in

to the influence of especially grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl

Jam and Soundgarden.

Eventually, the late managing director of Universal Records, Bella Dy Tan, signed them

as contract artists after witnessing one of their performances at Club Dredd. Soon their

initial recordings such as Buloy, Trip and Lutong Bahay were heard across nation. Their

first album, Khangkhungkherrnitz became a triple platinum hit in the Philippines having

sold 120,000 units. The other 3 albums include Buruguduystunstugudunstuy (triple

platinum), Jingle Balls Silent Night Holy Cow (gold), and Gulong Itlog Gulong (triple

platinum).

They recently released their 8th studio album, Middle-Aged Juvenile Novelty Pop

Rockers in 2010 with the carrier single "Paki-usap Lang (Lasingin Nyo Ako)". It is PNE's

11th album in total.

In 2011, Parokya joins the roster of Tanduay's First Five replacing long running

Tanduay endorser 6cyclemind who has recently left the group with Bamboo, who is now

replaced by Wolfgang. Parokya and Wolfgang are now part of the concert event

together with the remaining original Tanduay

members, Sandwich, Chicosci and Kamikazee.

Anak – Freddie Aguilar

Page 4: 5 opm songs

Noong isilang ka sa mundong ito,

Laking tuwa ng magulang mo.

At ang kamay nila

Ang iyong ilaw.

At ang nanay at tatay mo,

‘di malaman ang gagawin.

Minamasdan pati pagtulog mo.

Sa gabi napupuyat ang iyong nanay

Sa pagtimpla ng gatas mo.

At sa umaga nama’y kalong

Ka ng iyong amang tuwang-tuwa sa iyo.

Ngayon nga’y malaki ka na,

Nais mo’y maging malaya.

‘di man sila payag,

Walang magagawa.

Ikaw nga’y biglang nagbago,

Naging matigas ang iyong ulo.

At ang payo nila’y,

Sinuway mo.

Nalaman mong ika’y nagkamali.

About the song

Page 5: 5 opm songs

It is a Tagalog song written by Filipino folk-singer Freddie Aguilar. It was a finalist for the inaugural 1977 Metro pop Song Festival held in Manila. It became an international hit, and was translated into 26 languages. The lyrics speak of Filipino family values.

Freddie Aguilar left family and school unfinished at the age of 18. His father, who had wanted him to be a lawyer, was disappointed. Freddie travelled to far-away places carrying with him, solely, his guitar. With no one to guide and discipline him, he got into gambling. Realizing and regretting his mistakes five years later, Freddie composed Anak, a remorse song expressing apology to his parents. He went back home and asked for forgiveness from his parents who welcomed him with open arms. After his father read the lyrics of Anak, the two became closer to each other. The homecoming proved timely as soon after, his father would pass away.  According to Felipe de Leon, Jr., an authority in Philippine Music, the song was composed in a Western style but has aspects of pasyon, a form that many Filipinos can identify with.

"Anak" became a finalist in the first Metro Pop Song Festival. It went on to become very

popular in the Philippines and eventually abroad. The song generated a hundred cover

versions, was released in 56 countries and in 26 different foreign languages, and it has

sold 30 million copies. Billboard reported that the song was the number two world hit of

the 1980s. As of 2006 it was unsurpassed as the all-time highest-selling record of

Philippine music.

A successful movie of the same name was released in 2000, with a plot inspired by the

lyrics of the song.

About the singer

Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar was born on February 5,

1953 (age 58) studied Electrical Engineering at De Guzman

Institute of Technology but did not finish the course. Instead he

apology to his parents.

Maging sino ka man – Rey Valera

Page 6: 5 opm songs

Ang pag_ibig ay sadyang ganyan

Tiwala sa isa't isa'y kailangan

Dati mong pag_ibig wala akong pakialam

Basta't mahal kita kailan pa man

'Wag kang mag_isip ng ano pa man

Mga paliwanag mo'y di na kailangan

At kahit ano pa ang iyong nakaraan

Mamahalin kita maging sino ka man

Mahal kita pagka't mahal kita

Iniisip nila ay hindi mahalaga

Mahal kita maging sino ka man

Mali man ang ikaw ay ibigin ko

Ako'y isang bulag na umiibig sa 'yo

At kahit ano pa ang iyong nakaraan

Mamahalin kita maging sino ka man

Mahal kita pagka't mahal kita

Iniisip nila ay hindi mahalaga

Mahal kita maging sino ka man

About the song

There was a movie about this song. It was a local film starred by Robin Padilla.

Blogging about a Rey Valera song is quite overdue and incidentally, this song came to

mind when I just want to blog about my sister.

My sister is or was an avid fan of Robin Padilla. He is a local actor who had the "bad

boy" image in the Philippine cinema. Her fondness of this actor died down when the

latter got involved in a criminal case from which he was committed to prison.

The other night I attended a prayer meeting, my sister went out with her friends. Before

we were to go home, I stayed with them for a few minutes and they had a chat from

which I think I overheard her saying "that's why I love my sister", in our dialect and she

was referring to me. It caused me to smile although I was unsure of her exact words

and whether she really meant it or not. I go for the positive side.

We've been through a lot together and she's been through a lot family-related problems.

Page 7: 5 opm songs

One would go really crazy if they are in her situation. I couldn't handle it myself if I was

in her shoes that is why I admire her lot. She manages to go through everything, add to

that having a sister like me. I am the most uncontrolled sister in the universe but she

accepts me, loves me even. And I love her back.

She is the kind of person you will love to love because as I have always told you, she

can cope with different types of people. She can sustain relationships throughout the

years and have loyal friends behind her. For me, she is simply the most amazing person

I have ever seen and I believe she has been blessed fully for all that she has done to

our family and to her friends. She is the kind of person one will surely love, whoever

they are.

Bayan ko – leah salonga

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas

Lupain ng ginto’t bulaklak

Page 8: 5 opm songs

Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad

Nag-alay ng ganda’t dilag.

At sa kanyang yumi at ganda

Dayuhan ay nahalina

Bayan ko, binihag ka

Nasadlak sa dusa.

Ibon mang may layang lumipad

Kulungin mo at umiiyak

Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag

Ang di magnasang makaalpas!

Pilipinas kong minumutya

Pugad ng luha ko’t dalita

Aking adhika,

Makita kang sakdal laya!

Kundiman – Silent Sanctuary

Compose by Francisco Santiago

Para kang asukal

Sintamis mong magmahal

Para kang pintura

Buhay ko ikaw ang nagpinta

Para kang unan

Pinapainit mo ang aking tiyan

Para kang kumot na yumayakap

Sa tuwing ako'y nalulungkot

Kaya't wag magtataka

Kung bakit ayaw kitang maawala

Kung hindi man tayo hanggang dulo

Wag mong kalimutan

Nandito lang ako

Laging umaalalay

Hindi ako lalayo

Dahil ang tanging panalangin ko ay ikaw

Di baleng maghapon pang umulan

Basta't ikaw ang sasandalan

Liwanag ng lumulubog na araw

Kay sarap pagmasdan

Lalo na pag nasisinagan ang iyong mukha

Ayoko ng magsawa

Hinding-hindi magsasawa sayo...

Page 10: 5 opm songs

Bahala na, ayoko muna magsalita

Hayaan na muna natin ang hatol ng tadhana

About the song

Kundiman (originally spelled Cundiman) is a genre of traditional Filipino love songs.

The lyrics of the Kundiman are written in Tagalog. The melody is characterized by a

smooth, flowing and gentle rhythm with dramatic intervals. Kundiman was the traditional

means of serenade in the Philippines.

The Kundiman came around to be an art song at the end of the nineteenth century and

by the early part of the twentieth century, its musical structure was formalised by Filipino

composers such as Francisco Santiago and Nicanor Abelardo (February 7, 1893-March

21, 1934); they sought poetry for their lyrics, blending verse and music in equal parts.

Scholars and historians believed that the Kundiman originated from the Tagalog town

of Balayan, Batangas. Dr. Francisco Santiago(1889–1947), the "Father of the Kundiman

Art Song", briefly explains in his scholarly work "The Development of Music in the

Philippines" the reason why this Tagalog song is called Kundiman.

Silent Sanctuary

Is a 5-piece Filipino band. They entered

the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene in 2006

with their songs “Rebound”, “Ikaw Lamang”,

“Summer Song”, “Kundiman”, and “Ingat ka”. In

their second studio album called Mistaken for

Granted, the album's first single is called "Hay

Naku" and the second one is called "Hiling".

Silent Sanctuary was formed in 2001 with just three founding members, Norman

Dellosa (vocals, guitars), Paolo Legaspi (bass guitar), and Allen Calixto (drums). As a

growing band, they experimented in their music by mixing in classical instruments to

make a unique sound, adding the fourth member, Norman's high school classmate Anjo

Inacay (cellist) to the line-up. In 2002 they were asked to guest in UnTV's In the Raw

where Anjo asked Jett Ramirez to create string arrangements for their performance.

More string instrumentalists joined them during that single episode. Later Jett and Chino

David (violinists) were both asked as a formal member of the band. In February 2004,

Page 11: 5 opm songs

they released an independently produced full length album in Millennia Bar and Cafe in

Kamuning entitled Ellipsis of the Mind.

Later on Sarkie Sarangay took over vocal duties for the band. Jason Rondero,

vocalist/bassist of indie band New Modern became the band’s new bassist when Paolo

Legaspi left the band after the successful Debut Album called Fuchsiang Pag-ibig.

Anjo Inacay will not be attending their future gigs because he is currently outside the

country for further studies for 2 years.

Francisco Santiago

(January 29, 1889 – September 28, 1947), was a Filipino

musician, sometimes called The Father of Kundiman Art Song.

Santiago was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines, to

musically-minded peasant parents, Felipe Santiago and Maria

Santiago. In 1908, his first composition, Purita, was dedicated

to the first Carnival Queen, Pura Villanueva, who later married

the distinguished scholar Teodoro Kalaw.

Santiago's masterpiece was the "Concerto in B flat minor" for

pianoforte and orchestra. His most famous piece "Kundiman, (Anak-Dalita)” was sung

upon the request of King Alfonso XIII before the Royal Court of Spain.
