ward fought in major von tempsky’s forest ranger company no. 2 throughout General chute’s west coat campaign of 1865–66, being present at the battles of akotuku, te putahi, otapawa, waikoko, and the kakaramea skirmish. after several months on the thames goldfields, Ward enlisted in the armed constabulary and in 1868 was present against titokowaru’s forces in the wanganui area. He then took part in General whitmore’s poverty bay campaign under captain roberts, including action at the ‘crow’s nest’ and siege and capture of te kooti’s pa at ngatapa. john patrick ward, born in 1847 in sydney, nsw, arrived in nz in march 1864. His father, a private in Hm 28th regt., was selected as one of the personal escorts of the first governor of nZ, captain Hobson r.n. during his arrival in new zealand in early 1840.

another manuscript describes a most interesting account of a court martial in the field during General whitemores ruakaturi campaign of 1868 whilst in pursuit of te kooti who a few days previous had landed near Young nicks Head from the chathams in the schooner ‘rifleman’.

another manuscript entitled ‘the route to new plymouth’ describes the march northwards from patea in 1865 and another account entitled ‘a nights ride from cambridge to taupo in 1869’ describes a dispatch ride on horseback from the armed constabulary camp at cambridge’ to hold myself in readiness to proceed at a moments notice to taupo and very probably on to napier’.

also included is a stores goods list, prices and an early handwritten menu card from barretts Hotel wellington.

ward received a nz war medal and is variously mentioned in several books, including scott’s the parihaka story, lambert’s story of old wairoa and the east coast nz, Hocken’s bibliography of nz literature & bagnell’s and richard stower’s forest rangers.

He was again active in several skirmishes against te kooti in the ureweras. in 1882, ward accompanied te whiti and tohu to addington jail as their official interpreter after their seizure at parihaka, and wrote a book entitled ‘wanderings with the maori prophets te whiti and tohu.’ He took his discharge as sergeant in 1884, afterwards becoming the manager at the lake House at waikaremoana in the midst of tuhoi land.

amongst the following hand-written papers is an in-depth narrative describing leaving whanganui and meeting up with the rangers at wereroa redoubt, being sworn in, given his arms and accoutrements (‘[…] a pair of serge trousers and jumper – fully 2 or 3 sizes too big for me’) and being introduced to fellow soldiers. He includes fantastic descriptions of their personalities, life in the camp, and in particular the centre of social activity – the mess hall.ward also describes the arrival of General chute in whanganui in october 1865, his mission to ‘not come back to whanganui until he had wiped out every dago from the black pah to waitara’ - an overview of the pioneer settlers’ attitude toward maori throughout the country at the time.

also a thorough description of von tempsky, and his manner (‘a silver laced forage cap, very small for such a large head, a heavy befogged coat, braided waistcoat/trousers, armed with a peculiar sabre curved like a scimitar one reads
