Diploma Education has the dual objective of preparation for higher education and contribution to the work force or society. More than 80 percent of students completing Diploma Programs will move to institutes for further education and training. Of the remainder, majority go on to find employment, while a sizeable minority become self-employed/unemployed. However, students immediately after Diploma will be in dilemma as to whether to continue their higher education or to seek job or to become an independent entrepreneur.

The Department of Technical Education, Karnataka has an array of Diploma programs both for Engineering and Non-Engineering sectors. Though the curriculum and teachers mould the students to be skilled work force; but many continue to go for higher education (Engineering Degree). The primary reason, being an opportunity provided for Diploma holders to enter Engineering degree directly to 2nd year by lateral entry scheme. Secondly, in today’s time of rapid technological and structural change, education is seen as a process of lifelong learning.

The Department of Technical Education has come out with a handbook titled Avenues after Diploma―Higher Education, Employment, Startup which is hoped to guide Diploma holders on the right path.

I acknowledge my deep sense of appreciation for efforts made by the Sri H. U. Talawar Director, Department of Technical Education, who has overseen the entire writing of this handbook. I would also like to place on record my sincere appreciation for the Statistical Cell of the DTE headed by Sri Satish R. Huddar, Deputy Director (Statistics) in bringing out this handbook. I wish this handbook will serve as a beacon of light for many students.

Avenues After Diploma – Higher Education, Employment, Startup handbook envisages all the three stages of students’ life after successful completion of Diploma. The students can make use of all the three options mentioned in this handbook for their future endeavors.

It is seen in my experience that most of the students after diploma join Bachelor Engineering degree as the most preferred choice. The students who want to peruse higher studies can choose array of programs in BE/B.Tech. However, Diploma holders with little soft skills and finishing courses in their respective fields can definitely be able to acquire a job or can become an independent entrepreneur.

This book contains six divisions viz., Chapters-1 to 5 and Annexures. The Chapter-1 deals with Introduction i.e., General Scenario of Diploma Education, Chapter-2 explores prospects for Higher Education, Chapter-3 deals with employment opportunities, Chapter - 4 gives a brief account on entrepreneurial opportunities and Chapter-5 deals with the most essential inter-personal skills required for students. The last part of the handbook consists of various data in the form of nine Annexures about higher education Statistics.

I'm indebted to Sri Satish R. Huddar, Deputy Director (Statistics) who has put hard work to come out with this handy book for students. He has been assisted mainly by Dr. Guruprasad M. Are you completing the Diploma Course in your Polytechnic? Do you

want to know what are wide range of opportunities available after

Diploma in Engineering and Non-Engineering Programs? Then it’s time to

stop thinking, as there are many numbers of great options and

opportunities that await you after the completion of your Diploma. One

of the biggest reasons that students opt for Polytechnic Diploma is that

it offers excellent career opportunities in an affordable cost with

relatively short duration of time. Students from both engineering as well

as non-engineering trades have a spectrum of career options to choose

from after the completion of the Polytechnic Diploma Program.

Although Polytechnic Diploma programs are full-fledged technical

degree courses which are specifically defined at helping students learn

the practical aspects and basics of the respective subjects. Therefore, if

you want to expand your education and specialize in one of the core

subjects you pursue further higher studies.

It is evident from the fact that more than

80% of the students passing out from Diploma

Program opt for Higher Education, which is

their inward planning. Further, in Higher

Education as there is discount of one year in

Engineering Degree, i.e., they join 2nd year of

Engineering degree by lateral entry. However, it is fact that

there are equal number of career opportunities do exist as over pursuing

programs for higher education after Diploma. Moreover, one with little

special skills, training and creative mind set can head to become an

Entrepreneur.

Both State and Central Government departments overseeing the higher

education, have taken several measures to ensure equal opportunities to

students to continue Higher education, job and to be an entrepreneur.

This is evident from the fact that, the curriculum revision, introduction of

Outcome Based Curriculum, Skill Training, Accreditation and Lateral

Entry to Higher Education, signing MoUs with private players etc.

The most popular option for Polytechnic Diploma holders, is to take up

B.E. or B.Tech. For this, candidates need to appear for the respective

Engineering Entrance Test of the

Institutes/Universities. Many

Engineering Colleges / Universities

offer lateral entry to Engineering

Diploma holders. Lateral entry

means you can join the engineering

degree directly to 2nd year.

There are about 230+ Engineering colleges are there in

the state of Karnataka, of which 14 are Government (Annexure-6), 11-

Private Aided (Annexure-7) and 200+ Private institutes (Annexures-8 &

9). Few institutes have become Technical Universities by the act of UGC,

they do conduct separate CET for lateral entry to Engineering Degree

courses. It is to note that the type of institute chosen is important as the

fee structure differ from Govt to Aided to Private Institutes.

The Startup India is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, intended to build a

strong eco-system for nurturing innovation and Startups in the country that will drive

and design.

In order to meet the objectives of the initiative, Government of India announced the Action

Stand-Up India Scheme for financing SC/ST and/or Women Entrepreneurs.

Objective The objective of the Stand-Up India scheme is to facilitate bank loans between 10 lakh and 1 Crore to at least one Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) borrower and at least one-woman borrower per bank branch for setting up a greenfield enterprise. This enterprise may be in manufacturing, services or the trading sector. In case of non-individual enterprises at least 51% of the shareholding and controlling stake should be held by either an SC/ST or Woman entrepreneur. Eligibility SC/ST and/or woman entrepreneurs, above 18 years of age. Loans under the scheme is available for only green field project. Green field signifies, in this context, the first-time venture of the beneficiary in the manufacturing or services or trading sector. In case of non-individual enterprises, 51% of the shareholding and controlling stake should be held by either SC/ST and/or Women Entrepreneur. Borrower should not be in default to any bank/financial institution.

MUDRA provides refinance to micro business under the Scheme of Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana. The other products are for development support to the sector.
