DESCRIPTION
The Medal is the highest honor the university bestows, and with each presentation it has taken on the prestige of those who receive it. Former medalists include Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, authors, inventors, captains of industry, scientists and pioneers in virtually every field of endeavor. They have challenged our intellects, elevated our spirits and opened doors for UC Irvine that have led the campus into the distinguished ranks of America's top-tier public research universities.

Welcome to A Celebration of Stars – The 2012 UCI Medal Awards!
It is an honor and a pleasure to once again host the signature
event of the University of California, Irvine. We are delighted to
share the evening with you to honor and illuminate the contributions
of this year’s class of Medalists: Sue and Bill Gross, Elizabeth Loftus,
and Betty Tu and David Tsoong. These individuals are renowned
for their visionary leadership, intellectual talents and spirit of
generosity. We join with you in extending heartfelt congratulations
to our 2012 UCI Medalists!
Tonight’s theme, “Be the Light,” is inspired by the UC motto, “Fiat Lux”
(“Let There Be Light”). We gather together this evening to shine a
light on the contributions of UCI: innovative research that will
transform humanity, dedicated faculty who inform and inspire
students to change the world, engaged and enlightened students
who will chart our course and shape our future. All are lifted higher
through the generosity of friends, like you, who give of their time,
talents and treasure to enrich our campus and our community.
From the amazing performances of Claire Trevor School of the
Arts students to moving video tributes to our illustrious awardees
and insights into pioneering research, we hope you recognize the
impact of UCI on Orange County, the nation and the world.
Thank you for joining us and investing in UC Irvine!

Hazem Chehabi, M.D.UC Irvine Foundation Chair, Hazem Chehabi, is a board- certified physician in nuclear medicine. He started working with UCI doctors early on, offering his facilities at Newport Diagnostic Center for training and serving as a volunteer faculty member in the Department of Radiological Sciences. A former president of the Medical Board of California, he is a member of numerous medical societies and has been published in major specialty journals. Hazem and his wife, Salma ’99, ’09, have been instru-mental in helping grow many campus areas through their commitments of time, service and financial support.
Chancellor Michael V. Drake, M.D.Michael Drake was appointed chancellor in July 2005. Since then, he has led the launch of new programs in public health, pharmaceutical sciences and nursing science, as well as of the state’s first new public law school in 40 years. Previously, he served as vice president for health affairs at the University of California’s Office of the President, overseeing academic program policy at UC’s 15 health sciences schools. Before that, he spent more than two decades on the faculty of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, ultimately becoming Steven P. Shearing Professor of Ophthalmology and senior associate dean. Chancellor Drake has received numerous honors and awards for teaching, public service and research.
Gregory LeetWith nearly 20 years of direct fundraising and advancement management experience, Gregory joined UC Irvine as vice chancellor for University Advancement in September 2011. He most recently served as a vice president at Grenzebach Glier & Associates, where he consulted with universities, arts and cultural organizations, and private foundations. As vice president of development at the Arizona State University Foundation, Gregory helped ASU raise more than half a billion dollars in private gifts and pledges, and he tripled appointments with donors and potential supporters. Gregory has an undergraduate degree in journalism from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in nonprofit studies from Arizona State University.
Dear Friends,
Since the UCI Medal, the University of California, Irvine’s highest
honor, was created in 1984, the campus has celebrated
more than 100 outstanding individuals, whose ranks include
Nobel Laureates, business and community leaders, faculty and
alumni. The UCI Medal gives formal and lifelong recognition
to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions
to the university’s mission, spirit and vision.
Tonight’s honorees, Sue and Bill Gross, Elizabeth Loftus, and
Betty Tu and David Tsoong, bring added dimension and
prestige to UC Irvine’s elite cadre of Medalists, and we are
grateful for their extraordinary contributions of time, service
and support.
The endeavors of our current and past Medalists have
helped our campus continue its remarkable rise among the
top universities anywhere in the world. We have become
internationally recognized for efforts that are improving lives
through research and discovery, fostering excellence in
scholarship and teaching, and engaging and enriching the
community and the world.
Thank you for joining us in recognizing the accomplishments
of these extraordinary people and ensuring a bright future
for tomorrow’s leaders. We are honored to be part of this
amazing event, and we look forward to celebrating with
you this evening.

“Shenandoah” – Reflecting the light of our country’s most beloved folk song, now sung by choirs around the world. This simple and hauntingly beautiful early 19th century song reflects the westward migration and speaks to us of the joys of affection and the sacrifices of separation. “Yes, Oh Yes” – Reflecting the light of America’s unique energy and innovation. The spiritual and jazz are two purely American art forms. The genre inspires us to rejoice in our founding fathers’ dream of freedom. “Wana Baraka” – Reflecting the light of our multicultural society, “Wana Baraka” is a traditional Kenyan song that the Men in Blaque are singing in Swahili. “They have peace, they have joy, they have well-being!”

Sue & Bill Gross
Sue and Bill Gross developed a keen interest in healthcare and stem cell advances at UCI after seeing Hans Keirstead, UCI professor of anatomy & neurobiology and one of the nation’s pioneers in human embryonic stem cell research, on “60 Minutes.” The television news magazine described Keirstead’s use of a treatment derived from human embryonic stem cells to improve mobility in laboratory animals with spinal cord injuries.
The couple toured Keirstead’s lab and later made a $10 million gift to UCI supporting construction of Sue & Bill Gross Stem Hall: A CIRM Institute, which recently celebrated its two-year anniversary.
Bill Gross is co-founder of the Newport Beach-based international investment firm PIMCO. He is one of the world’s most prominent investors, managing nearly $2 trillion, including the largest mutual fund. The author of several books who has appeared globally on television, Gross has 42 years of investment experience and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University.
Sue Gross, a twin, was born in Phoenix, attended high school in Chula Vista and graduated from Saddleback College. She married Bill Gross in 1985, and between them, they have three children. She’s president of the Gross Family Foundation, the largest such entity in Orange County.
The couple live in Laguna Beach and are devoted yoga students. Known for their generous gifts to educational and healthcare institutions, the Grosses also fund the annual Orange County Teachers of the Year awards and are the largest donors in history to Doctors Without Borders.

Loftus has contributed her expertise to hundreds of high-profile criminal cases, including those of Martha Stewart, the Hillside Strangler, Oliver North, Scooter Libby and Michael Jackson.
Past president of the Association for Psychological Science, she has received six honorary doctorates and been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. She served as chair and is a member of several committees at the American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists. Tu earned an MBA in 1999 at UCI’s Paul Merage School of Business and in 2007 was honored with its Lauds & Laurels Distinguished Alumni Award.
