Hello, everyone! Today, I’d like to talk about one of the World Heritage

Sites in Australia. This is the Great Barrier Reef. It’s the world’s largest reef

system and consists of over 2,900 individual reefs. It’s longer than Honshu

Island. Colorful coral in the sea is very beautiful. If you get a chance to see

it, you’ll be fascinated by it.

Do you know what coral is? It looks like a plant, but it’s actually a hard

shell formed by animals. The animals are called coral polyps. They lay eggs

after the full moon in spring.

The Great Barrier Reef is now facing a crisis. More and more coral is

turning white. In fact, it’s dying because of global warming, water pollution,

erosion, and so on. This phenomenon is called “coral bleaching.” Some

scientists say that 80 percent of the Great Barrier Reef will be lost by 2050 if

this environmental situation continues. I wonder if our children will be able

to see these beautiful reefs decades from now.

We have to save this precious World Heritage Site and other coral reefs.

We should save energy and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the

atmosphere.

What we can do may be just small things, but I believe that our small

actions will make a big difference in the end. Thank you for listening.

�形容詞の比較級　It’s longer than Honshu Island.形容詞の比較級は、形容詞の末尾に -erをつける場合と形容詞の前にmoreをつける場合があります。moreをつけるか、-erをつけるかは、形容詞によって決まっています。原則１音節の形容詞、つまり、短めの形容詞は -erをつけて比較級を作る場合が多いです。２音節以上の比較的長めの形容詞はmoreを付けることが多くなります。

�形容詞の最上級　It’s the world’s largest reef system.形容詞の最上級は、形容詞の末尾に -estをつける場合と形容詞の前にmostをつける場合

があります。その際、形容詞の前に通例 theをつけます。比較級の時と同じで、比較的短めの形容詞には -estを、長めの形容詞にはmostをつけて最上級を作る傾向にあります。
