  • A Muon Beam using ISIS Dean Adams, Paul Drumm, Rob Edgecock, Paul Flower, Ruth Hampton, Ash Jamdagni and Ken Long

Current HEP test beam Planned improvements Expected performance Conclusions

  • Cooling Experiment Muon momentum- 150 to >450 MeV/c Momentum spread- 0 to 20% Background (pi/mu)- 1000 /sRequirements:

  • ISIS Note: rf pulsed at 50Hz, 100s per pulseISIS: 800 MeV synchrotron; currently 160kW, next year 240kW 50 Hz, >100s at close to maximum energy, 800 MeV ISIS is cw for cooling experiment! 2 bunches, each 100ns long, separated by 230ns Each makes 200 turns during 100s Target in ring could see 50MW for cooling experiment!

  • HEP Test Beam Target

  • HEP Test Beam Capture at 40o Beam dipped at 626 MeV About 25m long Lots of rf-power Lots of space Lots of cooling, cryo beinginvestigatedPlanned improvements: Dip at 800 MeV Reduce capture angle(?) Add decay solenoid

  • Measured ratesRutherford Health Warning: Different beam conditions Some momenta tuned, others not626 MeV; 40o

  • Improvements626 MeV800 MeVFactor of 75 increase at 450 MeV/c! 60k pions/s at 450 MeV/c

  • But what about muons?Without doing anything.. ~1100 muons/s at 300 MeV/c ~ 500 at 450 MeV/cbut with big backgrounds

  • With a decay solenoid.

  • Other possible improvementsIntensity currently limited by irradiation of ISIS more shielding better at 800 MeV anyway?Replace/improve target particularly cooling

  • Conclusions
