Words of welcome and introduction

OPENING PRAYER God of grace, we remember before you this day your son Gary. We thank you for giving him to us to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. Preserve among us the good of his example. In your compassion, console those who mourn, and bring Gary into the fellowship and inheritance of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please sit.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING A reading from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians [3.7-11] Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

The Cantor sings the psalm Psalm 18:1-7

I love you, O Lord my strength: O Lord my crag, my fortress and my deliverer, My God, the rock in which I come for refuge: my shield, my mighty saviour, and my high defence. I called to the Lord with loud lamentation: and I was rescued from my enemies. The waves of death encompassed me: and the floods of chaos overwhelmed me; The cords of the grave tightened about me: and the snares of death lay in my path.

In my anguish I called to the Lord: I cried for help to my God. From the temple God heard my voice: and my cry came even to his ears. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Please stand.

GOSPEL

Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Eucharistic Prayer continues, concluding with

… for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND COMMUNION

The priest breaks the bread in silence All baptised Christians who seek Christ in this sacrament are invited to receive Holy Communion. It will be assumed during this time that you wish to receive the consecrated bread only. Anyone is welcome to receive a blessing instead. During the communion the Cantor will sing the Agnus Dei and Lux Æterna

Grant that this sacrament of Christ’s death may be to us a comfort in affliction, a firm assurance of his resurrection, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where death and sorrow are no more, but all things are made new. FAREWELL & COMMENDATION Let us entrust our brother Gary to the mercy of God.

Lord Jesus Christ, you gave new birth to Gary by water and the Spirit. Grant that his death may recall to us your victory over death, and be an occasion for us to renew our trust in your Father’s love. Give us, we pray, the faith to follow where you have led the way, to live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to the ages of ages. Amen.

Holy and loving Father, by your mighty power you gave us life, and in your love you have given us new life in Christ Jesus. We entrust Gary to your merciful keeping: in the faith of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to save us, and now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit in glory for ever. Amen.

THE BLESSING

May God in his infinite love and mercy bring Gary and the whole Church, living and departed in the Lord Jesus, to a joyful resurrection and the fulfilment of his eternal kingdom; and the blessing of God, Father, Son X and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

THE COMMITTAL

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life. In your keeping are all who have departed in Christ. We here commit the body of our dear brother Gary to be cremated, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, and who shall change our mortal body that it may be like his glorious body. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
