  • Numbers, Symbols &WordsYour Daily Warmup PuzzlesI n bridge we manipulate puzzles involving numbers, symbols and words and strive for logical solutions (or atleast inspired guesses). I n each issue this week we wil lfeature a pair of number/symbol puzzles, an easy one hereon page two, and a harder one on the inside back cover;and, a word puzzle at the bottom of this page. I n al l ofthese puzzles, you wi l l be able to solve them withoutguesswork, by logical deductions alone, which is whatwe're al l trying to do at the table.

Today's puzzle is cal led Dominosa. A normal set ofdominoes (0-0 through 4-4 in the easy puzzle, 0-0 through6-6 in the harder one) has been arranged into a rectangle, the number in each cel l then written down and thedominoes themselves have been removed. Your task is toreconstruct the pattern by arranging the set of dominoes tomatch the grid of digits.

A l ist of the dominoes in the set is provided below thegrid, so that you can mark the ones you have found.

The easy version is above. H ints, and a more difficul t puzzle wi l l appear on the inside back cover.Answers wi l l appear in tomorrow's Dai ly Bul letin.

Word puzzles this week are from an app cal led Unolingo. I t is a crossword without clues! There are exactly26 blanks to fi l l in, and each letter of the alphabet fi l l s one of the blanks. The puzzles are designed so that

only common Engl ish words areused; there are no unfami l iar, arcane centuries-old wordsfound only in crossword puzzles. You 'l l do best by looking for thelocations of the hard letters first:QU , X, J . Be sure to mark offthe letters used in the checkingarea beside the grid to keeptrack of your progress. I t's notas difficu l t as it seems! I didmost of these in 3-6 minutes.

A l ist of words in the puzzle(in alphabetical order) is onpage 9. I f you need a morel imited hint, ask someone toexamine the word l ist and tel lyou if the l ist contains, forexample, a six-letter wordstarting with D and ending in E.

Okanagan NotesSome world class Penticton prideThink for a moment about what it means to beconsidered world class in what you do.

World class means that you can competeeffectively with the best on the planet, whether it besports, games l ike bridge, or some other measurableski l l . Once you reach the 'world class' level you retainit even if newer and younger competition has passedyou by. I t would be crazy to deny someone l ikehockey's Wayne Gretzky or bridge's M ike Lawrencethe title just because they don't play at the highestlevels anymore. World class is for l i fe.

We have often seen world class bridge players, even some actual world champions visit Pentictonand we have several with us this year. (Trust me,they know who they are! )

World class in a high-profi le category means atleast a l i ttle bit of fame, and if you come from a cityl ike Penticton, world class means you wi l l be verywel l -known local ly. Walk a few blocks past the oldestbui lding in this area, Penticton's M emorial Arena, andyou wi l l see something amazing:

The arena was bui l t in 1 951and Penticton entered a team ina local hockey league, and by1 954 they were Canadianchampions and had earned theright to play in the 1 955 worldchampionship in Germany. The1 954 world championship wasthe first contested by the SovietU nion, which developed itshockey program starting afterWorld War I I almost in secret.By 1 954 they were ready tocompete with other world class players, and they wonthe world championship, defeating Canada'srepresentative handi ly in the final game. The Sovietshad arrived and were undoubtedly world class. I twould take 1 8 more years for the Soviet team to facethe best Canadian N H L players rather than the bestsenior team (or later, selected players from the bestteams in the country) -- but we know how that went:Canada's pros won, but by the thinnest of margins.I n 1 954, it looked l ike the Soviets were going to

succeed at international hockey l ike they did at chess. The Penticton Vees were not having any of that. I n

1 955, the two teams met in the final game of thetournament, both undefeated. Penticton won 5-0.

Outside the arena you wi l l find the names of al lwho participatedon that teamsixty years ago, earning the worldclass title with avictory Canada'steam would onlyvery rarely winagainst the bestSoviet players inthe decades that fol lowed.

And tonight, we get a visit from another Penticton-born talent who has earned that world class title.Adam Fitzpatrick, born in Penticton, performs anElvis tribute that has won many internationalcompetitions.

And you scoff. Elvis tributes, real ly? H ey, we've al lbeen there. But stay and watch and you wi l l see a

world class professional at his craft. Adam'sact includes Elvis songs and costumes fromdifferent eras, an ease with the crowd thatrecal ls The King, as wel l as a singing voicethat sounds l ike a young man in a M emphisrecording studio in 1 955, along with pitch-perfect intonation and selections that wi l lsurprise you. Al l this from a young man, notyet born when Elvis left us, who entered alocal contest on a dare as recently as 2008,won the contest and immediately launchedinto a very successful career.

The Elvis impersonators and imitators thatfi l led minutes of late-night monologues in

the late 1 970s and early 1 980s have been replacedwith a new group of talented people cal led ElvisTribute Artists, and one of the world 's best is from thisvery place. Sure, Elvis may not be "your thing. " Butcheck it out, at least for a few minutes at the end ofthe evening session tonight, and you may actual ly findthat it is after al l . I f a local hockey team can travel tothe other side of the world and beat the Soviets, whycan't a world class local talent be the best ElvisTribute Artist on the planet?

Dominosa HintsIntroductory Puzzle on Page 2Dominosa recap: The grid of digits represents a

complete set of dominoes (l isted below the puzzle)formed into a rectangle. Your job is to discover thelocation of each domino.Dominosa hints: Look at each possible domino,

beginning with the doubles (which are easy to spot)to see if there is only one possible spot for them inthe grid. There wi l l be a few that you can mark offright away. Finding some of these wi l l reduce thepossibi l i ties for the rest of the grid, and sometimeswi l l tel l you that two adjacent digits must be adomino (otherwise there would have to be a leftovercel l ). I f you find a 5-3 in this way, you can mark al ine between other adjacent 5-3s in the grid. Slowprogress at first, but it wi l l come together quickly atthe end!

N ow can you do the easy puzzle on page 2?H ow about the more difficul t one on this page? Also, check the word puzzle on page 2.
