Un o nodau allweddol strategaethCanolfan y Celfyddydau wrth ddatblygu eirhaglen artistig yw i godi i’r eithaf lefel yrincwm a enillir trwy ein rhaglen gelf a’ngweithgareddau masnachol. Dros yblynyddoedd diwethaf bu’r ffigwr hwn argyfartaledd yn cynrychioli 75% o’ntrosiant, sy’n uwch o lawer na’r arfer argyfer y sector hwn. Daw’r 25% sy’nweddill o’r Brifysgol, Cyngor Celfyddydau

Cymru, awdurdodau lleol, ymddiriedolaethau a sefydliadau, anawdd y byd busnes.

One of the key objective of the Arts Centre’s strategy indeveloping its artistic programme has been to maximise thelevel of earned income through our arts programme andcommercial activities. Over recent years has been an average of75% of our turnover, much higher than normal for the sector.The remaining 25% comes from the University, the Arts Councilof Wales, local authorities, trusts and foundations and businesssponsorship.

That 25% is the key element which underpins the quality andaccessibility of all our work. It enables us to offer an artisticprogramme with major U.K. and international artists andperformers across the whole range of the arts.

It enables collaborations such as the developing one with RuiHorta’s Dance Company from Portugal, exhibitions by majorinternational artists such South African, William Kentridge, visitsby major theatre companies such as Northern Broadsides andthe main Wales based companies including Clwyd Theatr Cymruand Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.

It also enable us to present our own major productions such asMy Fair Lady seen by almost 10,000 people as well as ourtouring productions.

It also enables us through our wide ranging community artsprogramme to reach out to the whole community of Mid andWest Wales, to develop and sustain an active interest in the artswhether in schools, community centres or at the Arts Centreitself.

This foreword offers me a further opportunity to thank all thoseorganisation and individuals for their invaluable andindispensable support without which the cultural and artistic lifeof Mid and West Wales would so much poorer.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report ofthe Aberystwyth Arts Centre for 2007/2008. The centre playsan important role in the life and work of the University and itprovides a unique contribution to cultural life in the area. Itsprogramme of activities help to confirm the excellentrelationship which exists between the University and the localcommunity.

The Arts Centre building is in itself a landmark but moreimportant is the wealth of activity which takes place within it.This report describes the exciting programme and illustratesthe wide range of developments which are underway – intheatre, film, music and the visual arts. The visitor baseincreases steadily and is testament to the lively programmeand to the commitment of the staff and their innovativeapproach to participation in the Arts.

I am confident that the Arts Centre will continue to play anessential role in the life of Aberystwyth University and tostimulate activities which are both attractive and of high quality.I look forward to its continued success and development.

The growth in the range and quality of the performing artsprogramme underlines Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s roleas the main regional arts centre for Mid and West Wales.

Note should also be taken of the invaluable supportreceived from the Arts Council of Wales for the performing

arts programme development through the Arts OutsideCardiff Scheme. Here is just a brief selection of the manycompanies and performers that provided such an exciting

programme through the hundreds of performances thatwere staged during the year.

Summer Musical ProductionSioe Haf y GanolfanMy Fair Lady was the Arts Centre’s ownprofessional production for the summerof 2008, living up to its reputation as‘the perfect musical’. Directed by MichaelBogdanov it received excellent reviews,and with a large professional cast anda live orchestra, presented a productionthe scale of which is unrivalledthroughout Wales.My Fair Lady oedd cynhyrchiadproffesiynol y Ganolfan yn ystod yr haf2008 ac yn wir fe gafwyd ‘y sioe gerddberffaith’. Gyda Michael Bogdanov yncyfarwyddo derbyniwyd adolygiadaurhagorol, a gyda’r cast mawr proffesiynola cherddorfa fyw, ‘roedd y cynhyrchiad arraddfa heb ei hail yng Nghymru.

Ladysmith Black MombazaOne of the highlights of the musicprogramme was a sell out performanceby Ladysmith Black Mombaza. The musicand passion of South Africa, theirthunderous and beautiful harmonies andcaptivating harmonies provided a proud,strong homage to the jubilance, powerand beauty of indigenous music.Un o uchafwyntiau’r rhaglen gerddoriaethoedd perfformiad gwych gan LadysmithBlack Mombaza. GALLERY 1

The exhibitions programme at Aberystwyth Arts Centre during2007/2008 ranged across a wide range of media, nationalities andconcerns.

Autumn 2007 opened with Remote Dancing, an inter activeinstallation by Rosemary Lee and Nic Sandiland, with music byGraeme Miller. This used two long enclosed corridors with a filmscreen at the end on which a dancer would appear when a visitorentered; the dancer (on film) then responded to the visitor’smovements, thus executing an’ intimate pas de deux’. This piecewas accompanied by Stereo Dances and three films bychoreographer and artist Rosemary Lee.

Cult Fiction from Hayward Touring explored the place of comicbook imagery in contemporary art, unpicking the reciprocal natureof the relationship between the two in a selection of work by overthirty artists. Additionally several films rooted in this genre werescreened in the Cinema including Ghost World and Sin City.

Lubaina Himid calls herself an’unapologetically political painterfrom Zanzibar.’ Her paintings in the exhibition ‘Naming theMoney’ explored stories, histories memories and ambitionsusually connected with racial identity, while the eponymousinstallation showed 35 full size slave figures with details of theirlives pre and post slavery.

No Such Thing as Society opened at Aberystwyth. Drawn fromthe collections of the ACE and the British Council, this exhibitionconcentrated on a body of work which had been languishing inarchive boxes for three decades - British documentaryphotography from the 1970’s.

Following this the Gallery became a viewing box for a series ofartists’ films in Artists & Icons from the Independent CinemaOffice. This programme was an eclectic mix, with examples fromthe 30’s to the 90’s; but all concerned in some way with cultural‘icons’, figures in the public eye and including classics like RoseHobart and Wonder Woman and Meeting of Two Queens.

Scope was a space specific piece in the Gallery by Rui Horta,the Portuguese performer/artist. Scope was about a couple’srelationship - so far so familiar; but as the story is told theaudience sees different sides of the tale and is invited to takesides, split by gender.

Photographer Pete Davis has achieved a formidable reputationover many years for his large format photography of thelandscape, and also for his meticulous fine printing. The exhibition‘Wildwood’ revealed his recent work in forests, both in Wales theUK and America: the culmination of his years of research into andknowledge of both the natural landscape and photography.

William Kentridge is South Africa’s best known artist, a man whosework deals explicitly with the problems afflicting his home country yetwhich also manages to have universal resonance. We were privilegedto be able to show an important installation of his films in summer 08– the 7 fragments for George Melies, plus Day for Night andJourney to the Moon, which captivated audiences of all ages.

Agorodd yr arddangosfa No Such Thing as Society ynAberystwyth. Wedi’i thynnu o gasgliadau’r ACE a’r CyngorPrydeinig, canolbwyntiodd yr arddangosfa hon ar gorff o waithoedd wedi bod yn gorwedd yn segur mewn blychau archif ers tridegawd - ffotograffiaeth ddogfennol Brydeinig o’r 1970au.

Yn dilyn hyn daeth yr Oriel yn flwch gwylio ar gyfer cyfres o ffilmiaugan artistiaid yn Artists & Icons o’r Swyddfa Sinema Annibynnol.‘Roedd y rhaglen hon yn gymysgedd eclectig, gydag enghreifftiauo’r 30au hyd y 90au; ond ‘roedd y cyfan yn ymwneud mewn rhywffordd gydag eiconiaid diwylliannol, pobl oedd yn adnabyddus i’rcyhoedd ac yn cynnwys clasuron fel Rose Hobart a WonderWoman a Meeting of Two Queens.

‘Roedd Scope yn ddarn gofodol penodol yn yr Oriel gan Rui Horta,perfformiwr/artist o Bortiwgal. ‘Roedd Scope yn sôn am berthynascwpwl - pwnc sy’n swnio’n ddigon gyfarwydd, ond wrth i’r storigael ei hadrodd mae’r gynulleidfa yn gweld gwahanol ochrau i’rhanes ac yn cael ei gwahodd i gymryd ochrau, yn ôl eu cenedl.

Mae’r ffotograffydd Pete Daviswedi ennill enw arbennig o dda drosy blynyddoedd am ei ffotograffiaeth ar fformat mawr o’r dirwedd, achefyd am ei brintio cain trylwyr. Bu’r arddangosfa Wildwood yncyflwyno ei waith diweddar mewn fforestydd, yng Nghymru, y DU acAmerica: dyma ganlyniad ei flynyddoedd o ymchwil a’i wybodaethhelaeth ymmeysydd y dirwedd naturiol a ffotograffiaeth.

Gallery 2 continues its programme of photography, print andillustration. The year started with work from throughoutphotographer Colin O’Brien’s career, documenting the changinghuman face of London over forty years. The National PortraitGallery Portrait Award was as accomplished and clever as ever,with many images rising above fashionable techniques tocommunicate powerfully. In contrast, Grace Lau’s 21st Centurytypes was a warm and funny portrait of the people in a seasidetown, photographed as if in an exotic studio location. SuePacker’s ‘Pets’ project was a very intense, funny and disturbinglook at people’s relationships with their animal friends . Otherphotography exhibitions in Gallery 2 included the WildlifePhotographer from Natural History Museum; the annualselected exhibition from the Royal Photographic Society;Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin’s Hotel Afrique whichexposed the tension between the environment of internationalluxury hotels and the African countries they are situated in. SmallPrint Big Impression showed small scale works in every printmedium; the Association of Illustrators’ annual exhibitionshowed the best work in the field; and prints by Paul Peter Piechcame from the Wrexham Yale collection.

Touring exhibitions remain an integral part of the Arts Centre’sexhibitions programme, taking exhibitions throughout the UK,and also beyond where possible. Shows which have been on tourincluded: James Morris; Butabu Dublin, Royal GeographicSociety, Waterhall Birmingham with a smaller version made forRhyl; David Hurn’s A Welsh Life Wicklow, Wexford, Jersey,Kronberg Norwich and Newport. Residencies will be an important feature in the visual artsprogramme in the coming years, following the construction of theCreative Business Units and the UK residency funding award fromEsmee Fairbairn Foundation . As a fore taste of the programme,an international residency funded by Wales Arts Internationaltook place in April 2008. Two young Chinese artists, Wei Chenand Wang Chuan, spent 5 weeks in Aberystwyth experiencing thedifferent culture, and working at their filming and photography;with the result that each produced a film piece ready for showingby the end of this short period. This residency was part of a largerproject, with three other pairs of artists based variously in Cardiff,Carmarthen and Wrexham for the same period, and hopefully thispilot scheme will lead to exchanges of artists in each direction inthe future.

The summer school running inconjuction with the festival concertprogramme offers an unparalleledopportunity for students and audiences toexperience the very best in classical music.

During the year we have screened a wide ranging programme of filmincluding classics of cinema history, the best of UK and world cinema and have encompassed work from small scale independent film makers to major Hollywood productions.

One of the main successes of the 2007/8 season was the continued growth ofthe cinema festival programme. WOW! Wales One World Festival, is a partnershipbetween the Arts Centre, Taliesin Arts Centre and David Gillam, Festival Director.The festival’s aim is to promote film from primarily third world countries, which are often under represented in general UK film programmes,with an associatededucation programme for local schools. The films then went on to tour venuesaround Wales. The horror festival, Abertoir, organised by the Arts Centre,showcased a range of horror films both new and classic and its success gives a great foundation to develop next year’s festival. The Arts Centre also worked in partnership with the National Library of Wales on ‘Fflics’, a festival celebratingscreen classics from Wales. Mini events throughout the year provided a focus forspecific genres, including the Latino Films, BFI tours, classic and retro films.

Ffresh, the Student Moving Image Festival for Wales, took place in Aberystwythwith over 500 students from throughout Wales showcasing their work and takingpart in discussions, workshops and masterclasses.

The financial support from the newly established Film Agency for Wales wasinvaluable in helping develop the film programme.

Incorporated in the shop is the centre’sCraft Gallery, featuring regular exhibitions ofcontemporary craft. The Craftshop alsocontributes to the popular food festival andorganises the highly successful annual WinterCraft & Gift Fair. This two month long eventshowcases the work of the craftspeople of Midand West Wales and beyond and offers a widerange of crafts, design ware, local foods andgifts including jewellery, ceramics, toys, games,prints, bags and many other festive goodies.
