In India, when congress declared that a new state Telangana will be created from AP. Everyone in

India started to discuss about the creation of small state, is creation of small state is good for India ? or

is creation of small state is bad for India? Many Indians opposed this creation of small states in India

by giving many reasons. Following are the few reasons why people oppose the creation of small states.

Creation of small state will divide India

Creation of small state will take the India to pre British era Danger from China, china wants todivide India.

Small states in India are not making progress , Chattisgarh and Jharkhand Small states Depend on

    Central Government

What is the guarantee that small states will make the progress? Politicians want to become the chief

Minister or for the political power. Hatred Among state will increase

Election vote should be counted who is defeated

Like these I am sure there are many more reasons to oppose creation of small states. But I still I say

and insist that Creation of small state is good for India. Lets understand and know why creation of

small states is good for India?

Before Arrival of British people in India, there was no India. There were small kingdoms and big

kingdoms. Today when we say India, there is feeling, My India, in olden times there was no suchfeeling, all those feelings were for there king or god. I will fight for my king, my God. Today our army

when fights it fights for the India, not for Prime Minister of India. If Prime Minister of India will try to

sell the India I am sure our army will not hesitate to arrest the Prime Minister or any other leader.

    Today nothing is...

Should India have more states ?

When cries for carving out Telangana became intense Sri KrishnaCommittee was formed for mellowing down thepublic sentiments.Everyone in India started to discuss about thecreation of small states, whether creation of small states is goodfor India or not. Let us compare the pros and cons of this issue.

    Disadvantages:-

Creation of small state will divide India. The feeling of Indiannationalism would diminish in the cries of regional autonomy.

Creation of small state will take India to pre British era. Afterthe fall of mighty Mughals the pan India scene was a

chaotic one and British used it to their advantages by meansof subsidiary alliances. Be it the marathas ,the rajputs, southern kingdoms, Kingdom in Bengal or the ruler sitting inDelhi India was a divided front for the British which they usedit adroitly to setup an empire.

Small states in India are not making progress proportional totheir potential like Jharkhand which is very rich inminerals and has a favourable environment for furtherindustrialization. Despite this Jharkhand is embroiled in pettypolitics and has not been able to achieve the desired growthas promised prior to its formation. Bihar on the other handwith its minimal natural resources has been able to achievesecond highest GDP after Gujrat after bifurcation of the twostates (Bihar and Jharkhand).

Small states depend to a substantial extent on CentralGovernment for financial aid.

It will not be economically prudent to setup new states as itwould incur expenditure to setup a state machinery thoughit would be one time activity but to sustain and rungovernment machinery state would need resources for whichthey would depend on centre.

Politicians want to grab as much political power as possible bytaking advantage of the region movement andpublic sentiments.

Hatred within different sections of state will increase which inturn would lead to factionalism. This could triggerdomino effect and with more factional parties demandingmore segregation.

There could be quarrel related to state boundary(Maharashtra and Karnataka). Belgaum district of Karnatakahas Marathi speaking people which has its origin to Marathaexpansion to south. This has become a reason forMaharashtras claim over itthough the natives belong toKannda speaking group.

    Advantages:-

There will be efficient distribution of revenue all over thesmaller states and there won't be an unfavourable balance

of economic resources. The best example is the state of

Chhattisgarh, which has flourished after its separation fromMadhya Pradesh.

Smaller states will resemble local government more and stategovernment will be able to pay adequate attention to the

local problems. I am thinking of the Farmer suicides inVidarbha and the Naxal violence in West Bengal in particular.Manbhumregion(presently purulia) of West Bengal couldbecome a potential movement as majority of theadivasi belong to Santhal and Mundas tribe who belong toJharkhand although Manbhum was carved out of Bihar onbasis of linguistics. Naxals have over the years played to theiradvantage the regional sentiments of the adivasis. Lack ofSocioEconomic development of these adivasis could becomethe reason to secede from WB and join Jharkhand. The Naxals

could try and take advantage of this movement that is if ithappens.

More states will lead to more diverse set of policies and moreopportunities for investors. This will encourageindustrial growth and trigger a competition for the statepolicies that attract the most investors. This will eventuallybenefit the people.

A smaller state will definitely reflect the identity of the people

better as larger states tend to have a moreheterogeneous nature and it's policies could be dominated bythe most vocal communities or those communities that grabpower. For eg:- Karnataka politics is ruled by Lingayats,Maharastra by Marathis, Vanniyars & Nadar in Tamil Nadu.

When we compare the two I certainly feel advantage outweighsdisadvantages if the state is formed for cogent reasons.Narrow minded reasons and short term political gains should not bethe drivers for the creation for smaller states.

    Note:-

Sri Krishna Committees Terms Of Reference gives a more clearerperspective to this complex problem which translated into a set ofsuggestions for a way forward in current impasse.
