    FEBRUARY, 1975

GREETINGS!Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Wesincerely hope all of you had avery blessed Christmas. We pray for you a new year filled with many opportunities towitness for our Lord and Savior.

    CHARLEY AND INEZ

Charley, Inez, Jeneen and Lorna Beteta

Charley and Inez Beteta have left for the States and ofcourse, we have mixed emotions. We can't tell you what anencouragement this family has beento us and to all the families here. They are so faithful and so full of zeal for Christ'sWork. Charley recently was laid off his job, which in itselfwas an answer to his prayers, but they came to Bible studythat Wednesday feeling lost. They wanted to work in a full-time wayfor our Lord - astheysaid, "What else is important?"-but how and where; and theydidn'tfeel really prepared. (Theybecame Christians on Labor Day.) WesuggestedBible Collegeto prepare them and as we talked their eyes began to light upand that light is still there. They have applied to JohnsonBible College and have been accepted, although he must complete high school requirements.

After the decision to leave Puerto Ricotheyhad the problemofselling their house. The payments are extremely high, makingit very difficult. But just a few days before they left Maya-guez, God provided a buyer for the house which will enableCharley to beginBible College in January. How we all praiseGod for this miracle.

OTHER NEW SHEEPSeveral new families have been added to the Lord's Church

here in Mayaguez since our last newsletter, for which we thankour Lord. Hiram and Aida Martinez were baptized togetherin September. They are a faithful young couple with threegirls. The change of season in November causes much sickness in Puerto Rico and Aida is still recuperating from a boutwith penumonia. Pray for her; she has had to quit her job, also.

Senor and Senora Sacarello were also baptized one stormyday and the beach was swarming with mosquitoes and jellyfish. They didn't even notice. Ernest is a "bookie", but hereit is legal!

Renee Fernandez is an "Americana" but is married to aPuerto Rican. On the day she was baptized we walked a mileup tlie beach to find a place where the waves weren't so high.It happened that John and Renee were immersed by a hugewave. We on shore wereso busy watching, we all got wet, too.Renee asks your prayers for her husband that he might knowChrist, too. Her youngest girl, who is fifteen months old, isalso recuperating from pneumonia. Renee is helping alreadyin the Bible school classes and is quite a capable teacher.

This week Blanca Cruz was united with Christ and was soexcited she didn't sleep the night before her baptism or se\'eralnights after. Her husband was killed in Viet Nam ten yearsago so she and thirteen-year-old Betsy live alone. She was

thrilled this past week when Betsy came with her to worshipservice and enjoyed it so much she's telling all her friends andcousins. Blanca received her modern Spanish translation ofthe New Testament not very long ago and has already read itonce. Shesays shecan'tputitdown. Praise the Lord! Blancasays lliat soon she will have our house full on Sunday mornings just with her relatives, with tlieLord's help of course. OnWednesday she brought her sister and brother-in-law. Maria, her best friend, was baptized yesterday and Blanca was sohappy shecried. Akria is insocialwork in the public schools.

Samuel, who is Eddie Chevrez's best friend, was baptizedthis week also. Heisasfaithful as Eddie was, coming to everyservice either on his motorcycle or running from town. By theway, the group in San Juan tell usthat Eddie is the most faithful and the strongest Christian teenager they have. He goescalling with them every night to help in translation etc. We missEddie. He wants to go to Bible College so bad but his fathersays "no." Pray for that situation, too.

VISITORS FOR CHRISTMASJohn's aunt Dora and uncle Carl, from Ohio, came to visit

for a week at Christmas, and really helped out. Uncle Carl, who is an outstanding elder inthcNorthwestAvenue Church ofChrist, preached our Christmas Sunday sermon. The childrensang six new Christmas songs they learned, too. Our churchfamily had a get-together on Christmas Eve and Aung Dorahad a real good talk for the ladies. Then cookies and punch. The Puerto Ricansare stillcelebratingChristmas -from Thanksgiving until Three Kings Day onJanuaryG. Talk about noisepollution!

A VISIT TO SAN JUANIn November John and Terry were asked to preach for the

Faith Promise Rally held by the International Christian University congregation. They wentoverthcirgoalaiid we enjoyedseeing many old friends. It was inspiring to sing in English, too. Mary and Dianne couldn't pass up the opportunity toshop in Old SanJuan thatday, also. Sure were tired after thethree-hour drive home that night!

WATER?Maybe you've read in thepapers aboutourwater problems.

The island water company has been on strike and there's beenbombings and lots of sabotage going on. The government haspleaded with us to filter and boil our water and even rinsedishes in boiling water. It's a lotof work and the boiled watertastes terrible but at least we're still well. Hundreds have beenhospitalized willi diseases caused from the dirty water. Sewersoverflowed everywhere and there was no one to fix them. Sev-ei'al of our neighbors got some water company equipment(somehow?) and fixed one problem sewer on our street and itsure does smell better. The AAA (that's the water companynot Alcoholics Anonymous) is back to work now. In our areawe were fortunate to have never lost our water completely butsometimes we wondered ii it was water.

PRAYER REQUESTSAgain we request your prayers for prospects, of which we

have several right now, and also for our whole congregation, that we might all grow together in the grace and peace of ourLord Jesus Christ. We want to ask you to begin praying aboutthe purchase of property for our congregation here. There isthe possibility of buying the house we are currently renting. Itis very expandable and expensive, we might add - $15,000down. But nothing is impossible with God, right?

Thank you again for your prayers and we're looking forward to another year of being co-workers with you in Christ'sKingdom here on eartli.

A NOTE FROM NATHANBoy can I talk now. I could really talk your leg off but

you might not be able to understand everything. Mom andDad are pretty good at translating though. I even know a few

  • Nathan

Spanish words -1 had to learn sonieto survive with the neighbor kids. My friendsJeneen and Lorna left Puerto Rico and Imiss tliem, except for Lorna pinching my cheeks. That hurt!I really liked Christmas this year except when the loud partieswoke me up. I can play my maracas just like the Puerto Ri-cans, because I was born here, I guess. Mommy and I sang"Away in a Manger" and I always take my great, big, huge.Children's Bible to Daddy to read about baby Jesus. Guesswhat I've found in our yard - frogs - lots of them. And theydon't run as fast as lizards, it takes me quite a while sometimes, but I can catch them. Momand Dad say I squeeze them

too hard. On Sesame Street they say frogs like water so I putmy stuffed frog in the dish water orbath water, whenever I geta chance. I also learned to talk on a banana, on SesameStreet. Mom says she wonders about the educational value ofthat program. But it's in English! I take care of the newneighbor's puppy, too, and we're good friends. I think Daddyis getting suspicious abouthisdisappearingcookiesbutMommysays I should share. Talk to you next time. Love, Nathan.

    P. S. DEAR CHRISTIANFRIENDS,

How we thank each and every one of our Christian friendsand congregations for making this past year possible with theLord's help. The work in Mayagucz has been blessed and isreaching out to others. The Charley Beteta family is at Johnson Bible College. Please keep this family especially in yourprayers as they begin this new life and commitment to theLord. We are thankful for yourcontinuedfinancial and prayersupport of Terry and Dianne. Ifyouhave any questions, suggestions or would like to have the slides for yourselves personally or for your congregation, please let us know. The workin Clinton continues to be blessed and hopefully the foundationfor growth and maturity is being laid for a strong nucleus tolead here. We were thankful to have had an opportunity topresent a workshop on the "Works and Functions of a Forwarding Agent" at the Missionary Convention in Cincinnati.God bless each and every one of you as you begin a newyear in our Lord.

    July, 1975GREETINGS!Dear Christian friends,

Again It Is time to share with you allthat has been happening here In PuertoRico the past few months.

We've oil hod "La Mongo" (the flu)but have recovered quickly, praise theLord. There's been a lot of sickness Inour church family this past winter. Infact,Maria's Catholic family is telling her shehas been sick because God Is cursing herfor leaving Catholicism. Unfortunately,Puerto Ricans are superstitious enoughto believe it, so pray for Maria.

REVIVALWe had our first special services on

April 5 and 6 and we all grew spirituallyfrom the experience. Dick and SarahRobison, our good friends from San Juan, came and brought Luis Andino with them.Luis, a Christian of 5 months, preachedSaturday evening and did a wonderfuljob of presenting the Gospel. Dick taughtus some new choruses they had learnedat the Costa Rica language school andour people surely liked that. They loveto sing! Sunday we hod special morningand evening services and Dick preachedfor the first time in Spanish, withoutnotes. Have you any idea how difficultthis Is! The congregation's response wasterrific which really encouraged Luis and

Dick. We were all spiritually uplifted. Wehad special prayer meetings the fiveweeks before the revival and the Lordreally answered those specific prayers.Sarah had a missionary story for the preschoolers. Sunday after the morningmessage, we all had a big fellowshipdinner with the traditional Puerto Ricanchicken and rice.

On May 18, we'll be having our second special with John and Mary Reece, who have recently returned from theCosta Rica language school. Luis will bereturning and he is bringing his wife anddaughter this time.REINFORCEMENTS

Help arrived for Dianne on May 5 inthe form of Tina Rock from the CraftonChristian Church in Pittsburgh. She'sspending seven weeks of her summerhere with us serving Christ. She's a bighelp around the house and she's typingstencils and letters and working on craftsfor Bible school and even teaching thechildren in Spanish as well as watchingall the children on Wednesday evenings.Mary Gidley and Dianne are slowingdown as the July due dates for theirbabies draws closer so Tina's help is appreciated more than ever at this particular time.

In September more help arrives, Lordwilling. Jesus and Juanita Ramirez hope

  • to join us here with those who can onlyspeak Spanish and understand no English. (We find more and more of thesepeople every day.) He will also help inthe new church work, here in westernPuerto Rico. Jesus is a graduate of Co-leglo Biblico and Juanita, a graduate ofLincoln Christian College. They will betraveling this summer in Mexico and Illinois to raise more support. Please prayfor them.

CHARLIE AND INEZRemember the family we sent to

Johnson Bible College? They have enjoyed one semester of study already andare spending the summer as camp managers at Camp Christian, Mill Run, Pa.:Camp Christian Is dear to our hearts. We received early Bible training thereand it is also where we met each other.

Charlie and Inez write letters that arealways so full of praise for our dear Lord, even when the food cupboard is bare. Itjust warms our hearts. Some of you havehelped them financially and they arevery appreciative of your Christian love.Pray for them and if you're In the camparea, stop to see them. You could alsoencourage them by mail. What a missionproject!NEW SHEEP

On April 4, Josefa was united withChrist in baptism. She's a friend of Jenny Martinez. She is so eager to use hertalents for the Lord. A few years ago Josefa had a bout with cancer so keep herin your prayers.

After the revival, Eusebio, Amaliaand Edguardo Rivera were baptized intoChrist. Amelia is Blanca's sister so youcan see our people are evangelizing, with the help of our Lord. Blanca'sdaughter, Betsy, is now a Christian, too, which mode Blanco very happy. Betsy

and all our teenagers have completedthe Bible correspondence course andhave averaged 95 percent and above onall the tests. Eusebio Rivera is on theisland police force and Is a very goodsinger. He leads us along when we learnnew Spanish songs. Soon he'll be replacing John as song leader.

Aide's brother. Junior GonzalesVal-lo just returned from New York and isstaying with Aida and Hiram and thethree girls in their apartment. Aida andHiram did what comes naturally, witnessed to him and convinced him to attend

Betsy's baptismthe revival. He was the most excitedlearner there. He was baptized the verynext week. A conflict arose over his professional baseball games which are played on Sunday mornings so when his contract expires in a week or two he'squitting the team. He likes sports butChrist comes first, he says.

Junior has also just about convincedhis girlfriend, Carmen, to become aChristian and it pleases us that he realizes the importance of winning her toChrist before they are married. She'sasked for a Bible and she comes to everyservice with Aida and Hiram whetherJunior can make it or not.

Junior can play the guitar and he andCarmen would make such good youthleaders. Keep them in your prayers.

  • Perhaps this will be our first SpanishChristian wedding. Although FernonditoLopez and Maria may beat them downthe aisle.

NEW COURSES FINISHEDThe "El Encuentro" Bible correspond

ence courses which are used in Chile,South America, have been translatedinto Puerto Ricon Spanish by Dick Robison and some others in San Juan. Thereare 8 printed lessons in the series. Nowwe're prepared to go into the publichousing areas and the inter-city whereonly Spanish Is spoken. We're anxiousto get started.

We're still putting out our Church ofChrist newsletter to the community, bythe way.

"JESUS TENT"That's Nathan's name tor the canopy

tent the church has purchased for themiddler Bible school class. We feel likewe're setting up a tabernacle every Saturday night. Now adult worship is in thecarport, there's a class in every otherroom and the class in the canopy tentoutside.

Samuel Is keeping our teenage classfull with his friends.

We now have 2 teachers for everyclass who alternate Sundays. All theteachers ore bi-lingual except Aida sothey are translating the English Bibleschool material. Aida Is doing a terrificjob teaching Spanish flannelgraph storiesto the pre-schoolers.

P.S. A NOTE FROM NATHANHi amlgosj (That's "friends" in Span

ish) Guess who came to see me for mysecond birthday my Grandma andGrandpap Addleman and even Great-Grandpap Jones came. We stayed in acabin at the beach for 4 days but I had

to come home with mommy to sleepevery night because she was afraid ofthose cute little mice. Grandpap wasneat. He likes to catch lizards too and togo to the park.

Like my fish? Our American friend, Renee, made

a big clown cake for my birthday party.I have another new friend, Tina. She

likes parks, too.I'm not sure but I think something's

up around here. AH of a sudden mybaby bottles got lost and then a fewweeks later I got a new room, a new bigboy bed and a new dresser. And now I"haven't seen my favorite "gaking" (blanket) for days. It went in the washer butnever came out. Maybe daddy is rightwhen he says the washer eats things. He's always losing socks in It. I hadchewed the "gaking" up till It was justright, too.

Everyone keeps asking me if I'd likea new playmate. I sure wish I knew whatwas going on. I'll let you know furtherdevelopments in my next letter. I shouldbe able to decipher the clues by then.Adios, amigos, till next time.

    Love,Nathan

We alwayslaugh because, if you are to have a meeting at10:00, Puerto Ricans start showing up at 11:00.A good example was the"surprise" baby showerthe ladies had for Dianne and Mary. The ladieswere told to come at 2:00 and Dianne and Maiywere told to be at Renee's at 3:00, so that all theladies would already be there and Dianne andMary would be surprised. Dianne and Marywere the first ones there at 3:00 and they "surprised"the others.

The adult class is studying the Old Testament. It's hard to imagine people who don't know thefamiliar stories of Noah, Moses, etc. but theydon't. It's all new to them.

    HURRICANE ELOISE

By now probably most of you have heardthat Hurricane Eloise hit Puerto Rico and causedmuch damage, and we were affected by the riverflooding. It was September 16th and rainingheavily when John and Mary came to tell us we'dbetter come up to their house. They were out fora ride and could see many low areas were flooding fast, but we had no hurricane warnings^ndour area had never flooded before. None of uscould get out fast enough. Within five minutes, the water was up the street and in our houseankle-deep. (This was about 1:00 P.M.) Therewas no time to get bottles or milk or diapers oreven shoes - just a blanket or twofor the babies;these immediately became soaked when we wentout in the wind and rain. On the sidewalk andstreet, the water was hip-deep and the currentstrong, as wejoined our neighbors, trying toreach higher ground. We reached the two-storyschool building on our street, but the gates werelocked. We thought we'd have to climbthe eight-foot fence and squeeze thru the three strands ofbarbed wire on top, however, someone broke thegate open, and we rushed to the second floorwhere again, someone brokelocks to letus in therooms. Everyone was screaming and crying asthey tried to find the rest of their families, butthank God we have that "peace that passeth allunderstanding". Terry went down to helpothersget in, but by that time thecurrent was too strongand the water too deep to help many more. Those people got on their roofs and waited several hours for helicopters. Onebaby died when itfell from the rescue basket. Another man diedfrom swallowing too much of the muddy water.

as he tried to get his nine children on the roof. Many families were separated, ^hs. Vasallothought her 96 year old father had died, butneighbors had helped him. Four neighbors helped Elsie Lopez carry her paralyzed mother to theschool. Elsie carried the wheelchair. Renee'sneighbor used his boat to rescue fourteen of hisfamily off a roof, and, when he got them home, they had an extra year old baby. It was severaldays before she was reunited with her family.

The water kept rising and they called the mentogether to decide how to get everyone on theschool roof. There was no way! Several hourslater we noticed the water had gone down aboutone-half inch. It was still raining awfully hardbut the water had crested. Praise God! What awelcome sight! All of this time, weknew we hada home in heaven, but it would have been terribleto watch our children die. We were in the schoolmost of the night, keeping the babies close to usto keep them as warm as possible, even thoughwe were shivering. The cementfloor was so coldon our bare feet but at least our feet hadn't beencut on all the broken glass. Nathan slept on theteacher's desk, and the babies cried themselves tosleep when they didn't get anything to eat. Dur-ing_the night,_boats brought us cans andjnorecans of saltine crackers - no water. A Rum truckgot in later and people piled in. They squeezedus in because wehad babies. Again we had to gothru the icy water and climb up steps to the truck. Some ladies who were seated on the floor, heldJason and Christy, and we held to the ceiling asbest we could so we wouldn't fall out the doorevery time the truck lurched forward. Garbagebarrels, furniture, and cars had floated all overthe street so the going was slow and rough. Thewater was still about 3 -4 feet deep. Tne trucktook us up to John and Afery'surbanization, andagain, we walked in the rain several blocks totheir house. We thought we'd never get warm.Of course there was no water or electricity butGod had prepared the way. Mary had boiledsome extra water before they had left.

Then came the clean-up job. There had beenabout five feet of mud and water in our house. The houses on the street parallel to us were completely covered. Black tar was on everything andall wooden things were cracked and bloated, somost things had to be thrown away. Some thingsthat were salvaged were then stolen by looters. You could hardly get back to your house becauseof all the looters and sightseers. Everyone is stillnervous. Every time it rains they pack up and

  • leave. And every time fix-it men come, we haveanother mess (new doors, new kitchen cabinets, electrical system cleaned, etc.).PLEASE, PLEASE PRAY

John and Mary have returned to their supporting church in the states for several weeksand as yet Juanita and Jesus haven't arrived, soplease pray for us as there is much to do in theirabsence. Lord willing, we'll be home on a shortfurlough in the spring of next year, flow weare looking forward to seeing and talking withall our Christian friends again. Thank you foryour prayers and the extra financial help you'vegiven us at this time. We love you.

In Christian Love,Terry and Dianne Addleman

    P.S. A NOTE FROM NATHAN

I told you last time something was up aroundhere. Guess what, a doctor gave me a babybrother. John and Mary got one too, only she'sa girl. Must have been a sale! Jason doesn't doanything but eat and sleep. He can't even chaselizards or play with me, but Mommy says he'llgrow up fast. I can't even catch them very goodmyself now, because Daddy makes me wear bootsin our muddy yard. But I find lots of neat thingsin the mud. Did they tell you about all the water?

I was scared but God took care of us just likeNoah. Boy did our house look different when wewent back - EMPTY, no more Bible story booksor clothes or toys in my room, just a bed that theRed Cross gave us. Mommy says at least thehouse is easy to clean. Guess I'll go and try towake up Jason, he must be good for something.See you soon. Save some snow for me, okay?Adios!

    FROM THE CLAPPS:

How we thank God for each and every one ofthe brothers and sisters in Christ who haveblessedthe mission through prayer and financial givingtliese past few months. We know that many haveresponded sacrificially above their regular giving.Terry and Dianne need your continued prayersand financial assistance in the coming months, especially during the time that the John Gidleyfamily is home and they must continue to rebuildthose physical necessities they have lost due toHurricane Eloise. Please drop them a card orwrite a few lines letting them know you continue toremember them in your prayers along with aword of encouragement! This really helpsstrengthen them.

We thank you for your patience with us aswe, too, have been under a number of pressuresthese past few weeks. Besides the work with theClinton Church, Neal's continued work at OakRidge Lab and Good News .Mission (and the hurricane), we have just completed a book, "TheForwarding Agent: A Vital link in Direct-SupportMissions" which will be ready for the NationalNDssionary Convention in St. Louis, Thanksgiving week. We will have three workshops at theconvention and felt the urgency of writing a bookletting other forwarding agents know their responsibilities as well as those of the missionary, thechurch and supporters and the state and federalgovernments. Charles and Inez Beteta and SamCardona continue to bless us here in Clinton.Their loss in Puerto Rico was our gain. Pleasecontinue to remember us all in your prayers. Each of you is a very vital member of the GoodNews Mission team. God bless and strengthenyou as you continue to serve Him.

The Good News Mission was organized after a year of meetings andprayer, on behalf of a number of families, concerned about thefulfilment of theLord's Great Commission. Surely, God has not given the United Stateswealth, that each of us might hear the Gospel thousands of times, while countless othersaround the world have never heard!

Many areas of service were explored, but finally Puerto Rico was chosen, through God's leading, as a starting point, by the group. The purpose of themission there will be to teach and preach the Gospel, while immersing allbelievers into the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior JesusChrist. The three families of the mission will constitute the nucleus of thechurch, and will be responsible jointly for the edifying and exhortation of thechurch,as the Lord provides the increase. Please pray for them!
