The annual report is our attempt to givean impression of the amazing range ofperformances, events, exhibitions andcommunity arts work which the ArtsCentre creates and presents each year.It is an almost impossible task given thescale of the operation and even moredifficult is to highlight some keyelements, but during this year there wasan important development which willhave a significant impact particularlyfor our future artistic programme.

The Arts Outside Cardiff Scheme was a new initiative tosupport the development of the performing arts, funded bythe National Assembly for Wales and administered by theArts Council of Wales. Under this scheme the Arts Centre hasbeen designated one of the main Regional Performing ArtsCentres. This will provide funding to develop our programmeof drama and dance, both in presenting work by majorcompanies from the UK and abroad but also to develop ourown drama productions.

The impact of this scheme has already been felt in being ableto attract companies of the calibre of Propeller with theirinnovative production of The Winters Tale, Northern Broadsideswith their School for Scandal, international dance companiessuch as Nats Nus from Spain and in the significant developmentof our summer production with internationally renowneddirector Michael Bogdanov raising the quality of work toanother level with his powerful version of Fiddler on the Roof. With this funding the Arts Centre also plans a major touringproduction in spring 2007.

The Arts Outside Cardiff scheme has had a major impact notonly in Aberystwyth but has also helped to unlock the creativepotential of theatres and arts centres throughout Wales.

The benefits of this scheme have also been substantiallymagnified by the excellent work of Creu Cymru, the NationalTouring Agency for Wales, in firstly helping to develop the AOCscheme and in also acting as an important focus and facilitatorto stimulate mutually beneficial partnerships.

It is certainly an exciting time for the arts in Wales and the ArtsCentre is one of the key players in contributing to that newfound self confidence.

Yr adroddiad blynyddol yw ein hymdrech i roi syniad o’ramrediad anhygoel o berfformiadau, gweithgareddau, arddangosfeydd a gwaith celf cymunedol a gyflwynir ganGanolfan y Celfyddydau bob blwyddyn. O ystyried nifer ygweithgareddau mae’n dasg amhosibl bron ac mae’n anoddachbyth i dynnu sylw at rai o’r elfennau allweddol ond yn ystod yflwyddyn eleni cafwyd datblygiad pwysig a fydd yn cael effaitharwyddocaol ar ein rhaglen artistig yn y dyfodol.

’Roedd Cynllun y Celfyddydau y tu allan i Gaerdydd yn fentrnewydd i gefnogi datblygu’r celfyddydau perfformio, gydag arianoddi wrth y Cynulliad, a Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru yngweinyddu’r cynllun. O dan y cynllun hwn enwebwyd y Ganolfan felun o’r prif Ganolfannau Celfyddydau Perfformio Rhanbarthol. Ynsgil hyn darperir arian i ddatblygu ein rhaglen o ddrama a dawns, trwy gyflwyno gwaith gan gwmniau adnabyddus o Brydain athramor yn ogystal â datblygu ein cynyrchiadau drama ein hunain.

Teimlwyd effaith y cynllun hwn eisoes wrth i ni ddenu cwmniauo safon uchel megis Propeller gyda’u cynhyrchiad dyfeisgar oThe Winters Tale, cwmni Northern Broadside gyda’u School forScandal, cwmniau dawns rhyngwladol fel Nats Nus o Sbaen a’nsioe haf wych gyda’r cyfarwyddwr rhyngwladol blaenllawMichael Bogdanov yn codi ansawdd y gwaith i lefel newydd ynei fersiwn bwerus o Fiddler on the Roof. Gyda’r arian hwn mae’rGanolfan yn cynllunio hefyd i fynd â chynhyrchiad drama ardaith yn ystod y gwanwyn 2007.

Mae Cynllun y Celfyddydau y tu allan i Gaerdydd wedi caeleffaith sylweddol nid yn unig yn Aberystwyth ond mae hefydwedi helpu i ryddhau potensial creadigol theatrau achanolfannau celf ledled Cymru.

Mae manteision y cynllun wedi cynyddu yn sgil gwaithardderchog Creu Cymru, Asiantaeth Twrio Genedlaethol Cymru, sydd wedi helpu i ddatblygu’r cynllun ac hefyd gweithredu felffocws ac hyrwyddwr pwysig i symbylu partneriaethau sydd ofudd i bawb.

Mae’n sicr yn gyfnod cyffrous i’r celfyddydau yng Nghymru aChanolfan y Celfyddydau yw un o’r chwaraewyr allweddol wrthgyfrannu at yr hunan-hyder newydd hwn.

The most significant development this year hasbeen the impact of the ʻArts Outside Cardiffʼ

funding which has enabled us to present high-quality large-scale and international work which

Northern Broadsides, Theatre Babel,Mimirichi and Propeller.

Art offers a different view of theworld, and in this past year the exhibitions programmehas shared the vision of some extraordinary artists.

The summer success of Bill Brandt’s retrospective inGallery 1, the stunning works of a master photographer, was followed by an exhibition drawing on the talents ofpeople still establishing their careers. Magna Brava focused on works by Magnum partnersEve Arnold, Martone Franck, Sisan Meiselas, Inge Morathand Marilyn Silverstone; In All directions selected byQuentin Blake looked at the pleasures and pains of travelas seen through book illustration past and present.

Folk Archive proved to be a breath of fresh air for manyviewers with a very irreverent look at contemporary folkart and creativity. Curated by Turner prize wining artistJeremy Deller & Alan Kane, the exhibition featured ahuge range of images and objects, many bizarre, fromembroidered underpants worn by wrestlers, a hugemechanical walking elephant called Snowdrop, homemade tattoo guns from prisoners, plus many videos ofevents such as the World Gurning Championships. This was accompanied by a Folk Archive Symposium incollaboration with the UWA Department for Theatre,Film & Television, drawing together many differentrepresentatives of the ‘folk’ or people’s art.

During the year we have screened a wide ranging programmeof film including classics of cinema history, the best of UKand world cinema and have encompassed work from smallscale independent film makers to major Hollywoodproductions.

One of the main successes of the 2005/6 season was thecontinued growth of WOW! Wales One World Festival, which was organised by the Arts Centre in conjunction with Taliesin ArtsCentre with David Gillam as Co-ordinator. The festival’s aim is topromote film from primarily third world countries, which are oftenunder represented in general UK film programmes. The premiereof the festival at the Arts Centre and the majority of filmsprogrammed here sold out and were very well received, with anassociated education programme for local schools. The films then went on to tour venues around Wales.
