Practicing Tips

Definition: What is practicing? To practice: �to perform or work toward a specific goal repeatedly so as to

become proficient;� repetition paired with critical thinking!

Purpose: Why do I practice? To become a better musician by

achieving specific goals every day

Material: What do I practice? Any music that is interesting, enjoyable, and/or relevant to you,

including what we do in class.

Process: How do I practice?�A Practice Routine Outline

1) Schedule: Find a routine time in your schedule to practice for at least 25 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

2) Plan: Set a specific goal for your practice session. Example: �I will play this section perfectly 3 times.�

a. Goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound!

3) Warm Up: Just like we do in class (scales, Brass Warmup/Finger Power, favorite songs from the book, etc.)

4) Perform:

a. Practice SLOWLY at first.

b. Always strive for your best tone.

c. If you make a mistake, isolate the difficult area. Play just that one measure where you made the mistakeuntil you fix it, then go back and play the entire phrase or exercise. Do not repeat the phrase or exercise

without first isolating and fixing the mistake!

d. Use all of your musician�s tools:

i. Use your pencil to write counts and subdivisions, circle difficult passages or important musical

information, and write yourself notes and reminders in your music.

ii. Use your fingering chart to check fingerings.

iii. Practice using a metronome (you can purchase a metronome or download a metronome app!).

iv. Practice with your friends. Music is better together.

5) Wrap-up: Take note of your progress and any areas that you want to work on tomorrow.
