IoT and Smart Cities

• By 2020, the number of web-connected devices is expected to reach 22 billion (IMS Research)

• New services and business models in energy, environment, security and lifestyle

• More than 50% of those applications are predicted to need long-range connectivity and multi-year battery operation.

IOT low power autonomous network

• Out of the 50 billion predicted nodes to be connected to the Internet by 2020 fewer than 10% are predicted to use cellular technology.

• An IoT network would be an open platform for Smart City applications like smart parking, street lighting, waste management, load sensing of bridges and structures, and signaling and traffic

• Such a network needs:

• Long range communication to minimise the number of repeaters

• Unlimited extension capacity

• Low energy consumption for end-nodes to allow years of battery life

• Indoor, outdoor and underground localisation capability with low energy consumption.

LoRaTM to the rescue

• LoRaTM RF can reach more than 15 Km in a suburban environment and 2 Km to 5 Km in a dense urban environment (compatible with GSM base station density).

• Simple low-energy end-nodes offer battery-operated IoT deployment. Devices are equipped with small LoRaTM transceivers that may operate for years on the same battery.

• LoRaTM allows to precisely measure the instant of reception of a radio packet allowing precise localization of objects.

LoRaTM is a proprietary modulation of Semtech

Localisation

• The modulation scheme used in the LoRaTM technology can be used to determine precisely the Time-of-Flight (ToF) of the radio signal.

• The object (or end-node) communicates with at least 3 base-stations which are time synchronized; these base stations perform a time-stamping of the received frame and forward it through the IP network; the collected time-stamps are used by the localization solver algorithm running on a server to determine the position of the end-node. The average accuracy goes from better than 10 meters in best conditions to 50 meters in the worst cases (where the multi-path effect is maximum).

IOTLOC Goals

• The project will develop and deploy a commercially viable and practical IoT platform that is capable of monitoring and localizing indoor and outdoor objects and people at the city scale.

• Localization capability will be added to the LoRaTM technology, and the system deployed in order to demonstrate its effectiveness and scalability in the environment of a medium size city like Neuchâtel.

• Examples of objects that would need to be localized are assets to be delivered by professional transporters, vehicles, children and pets for both private and professional purposes, assets managed by the cities like gas canisters and trash containers. Localizing valuable objects owned by private individuals can also provide a very strong anti-theft solution presenting a huge potential as well.

• The IOTLOC project is carried out in close partnership with Semtech.

Conclusion

• LoRaTM offers what many companies have been looking for long, wide coverage, precise localization indoor and outdoor, for a low price and with long battery times

• We believe that this innovation will trigger a rapid increase of deployment of IoT that is today limited by cost and complexity.

• Opportunities to add further projects on top of the deployment
