MISSION DESCRIPTION

In his book “The Mars Project”, Wernhervon Braun states that “The amount of fuelrequired is equally formidable: 5,320,000metric tons” to send a crew of 70 to Marsand back. Project Escalator aims to studythe feasibility of a Human Space TransportSSystem utilizing advanced technologiessuch as electrodynamic tethers to reducepropellant requirements for human Marsmissions.

MISSION REQUIREMENTS

Investigate a new cycler trajectory, known asthe H1L1 cycler trajectory, as a means toestablish a human transportation system toand from Mars (this vehicle is the Cycler vehicle).Investigate the vehicles and systems necessaryto transfer a crew of 70 people to and from Mars.Consider locations Consider locations for nearly propellantless tech-nologies including LEO, Luna, Phobos, and Mars.Design a communications infrastructure that has no deterministic outage periods and two-waycommunication from Earth, Mars, Luna, Phobos, and all vehicles. The Cycler vehicle must house a crew of 70healthealthy adults, and the crew must be able tosurvive comfortably on the vehicle for the entiremission without resupply. There must be a vehicle to transfer the crew toand from the Cycler vehicle (Taxi vehicle). The crew must not sustain long term damagesdue to radiation effects while on board eithervvehicle. The Cycler and Taxi vehicles must operate on aslittle propellant as possible.
