Introduction of GEC-MENGO

A grouping of Malaysian Environmental NGOs (MENGO) was formed under the

DANIDA-supported programme for environmental assistance to Malaysia.

(DANIDA is the Danish International Development Assistance). The Mengo

coalition was formed in November 2001. The objective of the programme is to

contribute to the strengthening of the MENGOs and facilitate their impact on the

decision making at all levels in the Malaysian society. One of the main strategic

aims of the programme is to support and facilitate a more effective interaction

between MENGO and the Government of Malaysia on environmental policies. As

part of our strategy in achieving the objectives outlined within the DANIDA-

supported programme for MENGO, a MENGO Management Committee and a

MENGO Support Unit (MSU), as its Secretariat were established. MENGO is a not-

for-profit entity and relies solely on internal and external fundraising mechanism in

sustaining its roles and duties. Formed between the governments of Malaysia and

Denmark, MENGO is a coalition of 22 environmental and social NGOs and

represents a singular voice on environmental and social concerns in the country. For

Introduction of GEC-REBORN Global Environment Centre (GEC) is a non-profit NGO, established in 1998 to

address key environmental issues. GEC is based in Malaysia and supports

activities worldwide. We are focused on bringing together all parties—

individuals, communities, corporations and other like-minded organizations—to

help foster lasting change for environmental benefits. GEC has been a strong voice for the environment through a series of core

programs:

(a) Forest and Biodiversity Programme,

(b) Peatland Programme,

(c) River Care Programme, and

(d) Outreach and Partnership Programme. It supports information exchange and capacity building as well as undertaking

strategic projects particularly in developing countries. It works in partnership with

other like-minded agencies worldwide. About Forest & Biodiversity Programme (F&BP)

The programme aims to promote and support the sustainable management and

rehabilitation of forest & wetlands to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate

change. Furthermore, the programme activities are closely linked to community

development, environmental education & training, Corporate Social

Responsibilities (CSR) related activities, policy development and others. Project Site

a) North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest, Selangor

The project site is located in the State of Selangor and is one of the largest

remaining contiguous areas of peat swamp forest in Peninsular Malaysia. It

covers an area of about 70,000 ha and includes two Forest Reserves (FR),

namely the Raja Musa FR and Sg Karang FR. To the west, the forested area is

flanked by the most productive paddy fields in the country. In other areas,

palm oil plantations are the main feature. In Raja Musa FR, GEC and the

Selangor Forestry Department are working together for the protection and the

conservation of the peatland forest and focussed on the rehabilitation

activities. Local community and the general public are engaged through tree

planting and fire prevention activities, and taught on the functions and values

of the peat swamp forest in the conservation mitigating climate change.

b) Kuala Gula Mangrove Forest, Perak

Kuala Gula is a small fishing village located in the Kerian district in the state of

Perak, about 80 km south of Penang. It has a population of about 6,500 people,

mainly involved in the fishing industry. Kuala Gula is a popular ecotourism site

surrounded by vast mangrove forest. Here GEC is involved in the protection

and the conservation of the mangrove forest and focuses on the rehabilitation

activities with local fishermen community. The general public are engaged

through tree planting and taught on the functions and values of the mangrove

forest in the conservation of marine biodiversity as well as its role in mitigating

Agathians Shelter

The birth of AGATHIANS SHELTER is best described to go hand in hand with the saying

“a help in need is a help indeed”. AGATHIANS SHELTER is an orphanage for boys that

were founded in 2003 by a team of young adults which located in Kuala Lumpur (KL). It

was set up to save a group of children from being turned out to the street and to provide a

home for them. The children are from various backgrounds from primary school, secondary

school to college; some are orphaned, some only have a single parent who can’t afford to

feed them and others are either abandoned or neglected. Our volunteers then decided to start

a home to care and house these children. The day-to-day running of the centres, and the

organisation & facilitates are undertaken by trained and experienced personnel, most of

them are unpaid volunteers from all over the world. We want you to tell us our lives mean

something if only we work hard like everyone else. We want you to tell us to never stop

believing in our dreams and ourselves.

Program Manager at SOLS 24/7

Thanks to GCDP, I joined SOLS 24/7 as a trainee

in Year 2011. I am glad to contribute to the pro-

ject, enabling the needy community in Malaysia

to have access to computers and knowledge.

Now, after my GCDP, I continue working in

SOLS 24/7 creating impact that matters.
