LE LIEN ENTRE LES PLUS AGÉS ET LES PLUS JEUNES

Jehanzaeb JangH2-M

Mon grand père me manque chaque jour.

Cela me ressuscite, il me semble que je me lève aprèsavoir dormi longtemps.

L'homme, ensuite, a enlevé son masque. J'étais surpris. L'homme masqué étaitun de mes amis. J'ai crié, " Marc, qu'est-ce que tu fais ici ? "

Il a dit, " Shhh ! Je me cache de la police. "

Je me suis senti heureux.

Don Amontillado : Quelle catastrophe ? Qu'est-ce qui s'est passé ? Dites-moi,Fabrizio.

Pourquoi

Don Vitolini arrive

Don Vitolini : Taisez-vous ! Tous les deux !

Don Vitolini frappe Felipe

Tu vas l'assassiner.

Choeur grec: Il doit être assassiné!

(Diego, Don Amontillado, Fabrizio)

Pourquoi me tuer?

On va assassiner Don Vitolini.

TRIP TO TOURS 2011

In July 2011, the Club de Français sent a second group of boys to attend a summercourse at the Institut de Touraine in Tours, France. This time, the group wasmuch larger and more diverse than in the previous trip: 26 students from SeniorSchool signed up amongst whom many had not studied French before. Theexperience was an influential one for the students, as they immersed themselvesin French culture and language. Everyone in the group - whether they werenovices or in the advanced levels - gradually learned to converse in French. Also, the chance to interact with people from other countries was relished by theAitchisonians, and many formed long-lasting friendships with the foreigners. The trip would not have been possible without the help of the two teachers,Madam Saman and Madam Maleeha, and of course, our Principal, Mr Aijazuddin. This report was compiled to allow the students to express their feelings on thetrip and to serve, along with last year's report, as a guide to anyone who wishesto go next summer.

I woke up to the sun streaming through the shades, rubbing my eyes while slowlydragging myself out of bed. I remember my first day in Tours, France, we werevery excited and soon after a heartening welcome by our families whom wewere staying with we headed to the Hotel de Ville, the city centre. We had arrivedin Tours after a long and tiring journey but the excitement didn't let the fatigueto overcome us. We toured the main parts of the city on the first day and haddone enough exploring by seven pm, when we reached our homes for dinner.Excellent food was prepared for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, ourfamily prepared halal food on our request. They even provided us valuableinformation regarding the need to use public transport and gave us maps of thecity in case we got lost. I gave my family some cultural gifts that I had broughtfor them that they really liked. Soon the day came to an end and the best thingI felt was that nobody in the city spoke any language other than French and weAitchisonian had a wonderful chance to perfect our language skills by improvingour spoken French had never gotten the chance to speak French in Pakistan witheveryone around me and this was an excellent platform for the improvement ofour language.

Days passed very quickly in France, the experience in general is unforgettableand we learnt a lot more than just French. In other words this trip made usAitchisonians more independent, shown by the fact that we spent 25 days in aforeign land with a language we had little grasp over. In the institute we weretaught quality French and we were able to improve the level of our oral French,as we were taught in specially designed "phonetique" labs, which housedmultimedia technology to aid our comprehension. We were taught difference inpronunciation and the particularly distinct local accent. We also met studentsfrom different nationalities at the institute and the environment there was prettygood.

The institute also organized several trips to different castles and cathedrals andwe enjoyed the most on our trip to Mont Saint Michel and the neighboring coastaltown of Saint Malo; a very enjoyable trip, even though it rained and we could notexplore the town fully we still managed to visit a fort and a museum of vasthistorical importance. On our trip to Paris we visited the castle of Versailleswhich housed Louis XVI centuries ago. The gardens were beautiful with anexquisite variety of plants and flowers.

The families we stayed with were very hospitable and took care of us in everyway possible. I must say that the amount of French I learnt conversing with themis much more than what I learnt elsewhere. They used to prepare excellent foodand by the end of our stay we had developed a strange liking for French cuisine.

The fellow Aitchisonian whom I stayed with was also very friendly and it felt asif a very intimate relation had developed between us. We went as friends andreturned being even better ones. Dr Saman ensured our stay was good as shewas responsible for keeping such a large group in a well organized manner andI thank her for her help and support during our stay. At the end I must say thatthese were our best summer vacations ever and we had an amazing time together.

After months of anticipation, having undergone O'levels to boot, France was adream, about to become reality. Touching down at Charles De Gaulle InternationalAirport for the first time, the culture shock was immediate. Having only learntFrench in school, with minimal real life application, the people, the language theyspoke, and the way they conducted themselves, all caught me off guard, despiteplenty of prior knowledge. Gone were Urdu, hordes of Pakistani people, and thecultural restraints which ruled most people back home. It was different, to saythe least.

Over the course of the next few weeks, however, as I began to gain fluency inthe language, thanks to the classes at L'Institut De Touraine as well as the dinnertable conversations with our host family, the city, and its inhabitants, becamemore accessible, in terms of comprehension. Tours, a beautiful city in the LoireValley, provided me with an education, distinct from anything one learns insidethe four walls of a school. At the Institute, to my initial apprehension, I was placedin a level of difficulty, which I thought too advanced for my capabilities. However,as the first week passed, my trepidation melted away, as I discovered withinmyself a propensity and the capacity to learn new and more difficult things, pushing myself to the maximum of my abilities. Surrounded by students fromuniversities across America, Canada and Asia, with several years of advancedFrench under their belts, I found myself able to keep up and communicateeffectively with them, unhindered by differences in the cultures we grew up in.The fact that I, and other members of my group were able to do this, i.e. use theFrench language effectively, is in large part due to the hard work and help of ourteachers, Madam Maleeha Khwaja and Dr. Saman Asif. Coping with the processof adjustment in Tours was made so much easier due to the hospitality andfriendliness of the host families, the teachers at the Institute and our fellowstudents. A typical day in France, following our lessons, was spent roaming aboutthe city, shopping, which astonishingly took up a lot of time, and after dinnerwith the family, going out to the guinguette on the river, ice cream at Tutti Gustiand perhaps, meeting up with some friends from the Institute.

Our 2 days in Paris on alternate weekends were equally, if not more memorable. The first hurdle was obviously getting to the train station on time, which wemanaged successfully, in the end, after many angry phone calls and threats. Wewere able to compress a great deal of the major Parisian sites in to those 2 days, visiting the Versailles, the great chateau some distance outside the city, with its

beautiful gardens and awe-inspiring architecture, the Eiffel Tower, the mostfamous site in Paris, which truth be told, did not inspire me as much as I'dexpected, the cathedrals of Notre-Dame and Sacre-Coeur, both with an atmosphereso mesmerizing and intensely spiritual and architecture so distinct from modernday buildings, and The Champs-Elysees, bustling with tourists and natives alike, boasting every store from Virgin Megastore, to Zara, was the culmination of ourvisits on both occasions.

In short, going to and living in France was an experience of a lifetime, one thatI, if given the chance, would repeat a hundred times over.

On the 1st of July after a very long and tiring journey we finally arrived in Francebut still ahead of us was a journey to Tours. When we got to Tours we werewelcomed warmly by members of our respective host families.

In Tours we took the first two days before our classes began at the Institute deTouraine to explore Tours, which proved to be very useful. This course at theInstitute de Touraine was an ideal way to learn French. People might think thatlearning French is not a big deal and could be done in Pakistan as well, but thecorrect accent and the communication can definitely not be achieved in Pakistanalone unless one sits amongst a group of fluent speakers of French everyday, which is not easily possible these days.

Apart from studies, we made this trip joyous by visiting different castles and withfrequent trips to Paris. Our two trips to Paris were memorable parts of our tripas well. In Paris we visited a lot of famous places including the Eiffel Tower, TheLouvre, The Champs Elysees street, etc. We also visited a few castles and fortslike Mont Saint Michel and the neighboring town of Saint Malo.

Our trip also was great due to the level of comfort we had with our host families. In the end I would like to thank all the members of my host family in Tours andMadam Saman Asif who did a lot for us all the time, whether any one of us hadany problem with the host family or any sort of problem at the Institute. Therefore, our trip would not have been the same without the support of Madam SamanAsif.

My trip to Tours in July 2011 was a memorable one, the kind of trip which I willalways remember and wish to relive many times over. It was a once in a lifetimeopportunity which gladly I availed.

As the trip started we met our host family consisting of one lady named ChristineRegard and her daughter. Her two sons were studying in other countries. Shewas very hospitable and the best thing about her was that she also helped mein improving my French and I did not hesitate talking to her in French as shealways used to help me in completing my sentences which increased myvocabulary. If I get the opportunity to go for the language course again, I wouldprefer to stay with her again.

Our three weeks course of French language at the Institute de Touraine was agood experience and the teachers there were very skilled professionals. MyFrench communication and writing skills improved a lot. The teachers gaveparticular attention to all the students and my confidence level in speaking Frenchincreased to a great level.

We interacted with a lot of foreign students and it was a nice experience. I cameto know of many different cultures especially the French culture. Our trips toParis were very memorable as we saw the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre Museum,Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees. All of these remarkable places were worthseeing.

It was overall a very good experience and I will always remember this trip andcherish the moments which I spent with my friends in France.

It was around 4 o'clock in the morning when the coaster finally pulled to astandstill. Down on the pavement, there were dozens of eyes watching us intently. There on, things picked up pace; Ma'am Saman was already out of the bus, callingout names of boys in pairs- in the order in which they were going to be sharingtheir houses with. I myself, weary after the eight hour flight and four hour tripby road, not counting the many hours spent at the airport and the flight delays, got up and made myself as presentable as possible to greet my host-family. Iwaited till my name too was called along with my house-mate, Hashim and gotoff the bus with my luggage. Before us, stood a short lump of a man with a feeblebeard and a welcoming expression strewn across his face, and with a nod, heguided us towards his car in the parking lot.

The man didn't talk much on the way home, and soon enough we were standingat the door with our luggage at our side. Our host gently opened the door, onlya quarter of the way, and we understood why as a loud dominant bark came fromwithin the room. Paying closer attention, I realized it was the sound of not onebut two dogs, though the Yorkshire Terrier's "squeals" were barely heard underthe Boxer's roars- Vlad and Ginger as we learned were their names.

Once inside, formal introductions began, the man of the house introduced himselfas Jean- Jacque, his wife and his daughter, who were waiting for us, presentedthemselves as Marie-Thie and Ilodie. Half-past four wasn't exactly a very pleasanttime for getting to know one another as they understood, so we were withoutfurther delay taken up a couple of flights of stairs to our room in the attic.

A big problem as I soon discovered was not being able to speak the language! Iwas literate enough to skim through the basic introductions, but that was notenough as I soon learned. Classes began at the Institute and the only time any ofus had to interact with our host-family was at dinner or breakfast, but even thenit was awkward to sit at the table doing nothing except nod and smile, if the needarose one had to turn to his foreign house mate for help. It was in itself an allnew experience, and soon enough, the city's routes and bus schedules were morethan just embedded in our minds and the basics needed to "survive" were pickedup. Of course, these are the accounts of someone like myself who before coming

0

Celebrating 125 Years

Page 44: Aitchisonian French

to the country didn't know enough about the language, those that did however, found it even better of an experience because not only could they communicateefficiently to the extent that they were able converse and argue, but they provedthemselves as better company as well to the local people.

The Insitute held activities each day and night, ranging from hikes to campingtrips to canoeing, from visiting chateaux to football and table tennis tournamentsand paint-ball, from dances to movies, everything! Students were givenopportunities to meet others enrolled in the same course at Monday night "Cafedes langues" or gatherings by the riverside cafe- la guinguette. All in all, it wasamazing. The people we met and the friends we made were extraordinary, theplaces we went to were mind blowing and the whole thing with your best friendsby your side just added more magic to the trip! Although there is still much tosay, I didn't mention the bread, the panini's the "syrop diablos", the after dinnercheese, the strolls by the Loire, the Algerians at our favorite food place, the 8Euro Fillet-o-fish, the "Incredible Milkshakes", the horse meat at dinner......... Butmost of it wouldn't make sense to all those who didn't go, they just missed outon one of the opportunities of a life time!!!

It was a quite difficult task for me to wait for almost a month after the O levelexaminations before going to France. The trip had immense importance for meas it was my first foreign trip without my family. Our flight to Islamabad, whichwas scheduled for 6 a.m on the 1st of July was delayed for almost four and a halfhours due to rainfall and poor visibility conditions, so after the irksome stay atthe Lahore airport, we finally departed at 12 noon. As we stepped out of the"Charles de Gaulle" airport, everything else was at the back of our minds. Afterthe 3 hours bus ride from Paris to Tours, we finally met our host families at PlaceRabelais at 12 p.m. Our host was a kind, elderly lady in her 60's. When we firstsaw our room, we were surprised to see that all that we had heard about therooms being too small proved wrong. Our room was amazing and it was quitebig. We slept almost immediately that night because of the tiring journey.

The next day when we woke up around 10, we got ready and set off to startexploring the city. First of all, we went to buy a SIM card for ourselves and thenwe had lunch at a pizza parlor. Tours was a magnificent city, situated betweenthe rivers Loire and Cher. We still had two days in between before the regularclasses at the Institut de Touraine had to begin so, we decided to explore thesmall, yet beautiful city. For the first two days, our meeting point was the "L'hotelde ville". It was a century old glorious building. There were many beautiful placeswhich we were able to see and explore - St.Gatien, Botanical Gardens, Hotel desArts and also Jardin des Prébendes d'Oé. The Rue Nationale was a very good placefor shopping and it was one of the major streets in the city. The Avenue deGrammont and Place Jean Jaures had many different restaurants and clubs. Thenorth of the city did not have many places to visit but the south had some verynice places - a lake, swimming pools, a bowling alley and some very nice shoppingmalls. We often went to the pool. When talking about Tours, the Loire and theriverside restaurant/club - Guinguette cannot be forgotten. It was a very lovelyplace. Every Saturday there used to be a concert which was an attraction formany tourists. There was also a dance floor in the guinguette; amazingly, themost wonderful thing was that we - Pakistanis often danced with the charmingpeople there and the people enjoyed themselves too. Every Friday, all of us usedto wear "shalwar kameez" and we went to the mosque to offer the Friday prayers. The place plumereau was a square with lots of pubs and restaurants. It was avery nice place and it displayed the common life of the inhabitants of the city.

After the classes started, we spent almost 6 hours at the Institute from Mondayto Friday. We had to be at the institute by 9 so we had to wake up early. Theroutine changed a bit and sometimes we were tired in the evenings but theclasses were quite interesting. The life at the campus was quite good and wecould interact with people of many different nationalities and we could get toknow about each other's culture. The facilities provided at the institute werestate of the art. Apart from that, the institute organized some excursions tocastles and it also held some sports matches.

Our host - Mme Martin, was also very caring and she was always very carefulabout our needs. She arranged halaal food for us as well as many varieties ofFrench delicacies. I was rooming with Hammad Aslam. Our bedroom was quiteawesome and we did not face any problem with our accommodation. There werealso many other students whom she was living with and we had a very nicechitchat at the dinner table every evening. We took some gifts for our host familywhich included the things which unveiled the culture and tradition of Pakistan. She was very happy and thankful when she received them. When we were leavingTours, I was very sad to leave behind such a nice place to live.

We visited Paris twice both being day-long trips. A pair, as I had heard, was avery amazing city. On our first trip we went to visit the Louvre museum, NotreDame, Sacre-Couer, Champs Elysees and last but not the least the Eiffel Tower. It was a trip full of amusement. Our second trip was also full of excitement. Wewent to see the Palace of Versailles. It was a marvelous place to visit. The grandpalace and the splendid gardens were very beautiful. We visited the ChampsElysees again for doing some shopping. Also, we went to visit the Eiffel Toweragain. Some of the boys also went to visit the chateau de Chenonceau and also,Clos Luce - Da Vinci's residence

We faced no problem of food or transport. The city is dotted with lots of halaalrestaurants which serve excellent and affordable food. "French Gastronomy" isfamous all over the world and we ate the specialties - lots of baguette, crepe, cheese of various types, pain au chocolat, pain and also many different types offish. Every night, after all of us had done dinner, we used to go to have some icecream at the very famous "Tutti Gusti" ice cream parlor in "Place Plumereau"."Place plumereau" is a square with busy pubs and restaurants, whose open-airtables fill the centre of the square.

Page 47: Aitchisonian French

For transportation, some of us rented the bicycles while the others got the "filblue"bus pass which helped us use the local bus system conveniently for a month. Forthe excursions, which we planned ourselves, we used the "fil vert" bus systemwhich, at a very cheap rate, helped the people visit lots of different touristattractions close to the city of Tours. When we went to Paris, we used the SNCFwhich was cheaper, in comparison to the TGV.

In the end I bought some souvenirs for my family. I could not believe that thisextraordinary trip to France was nearing its end. The trip helped us improve ourspoken French a lot. We could now communicate with all the people without adifficulty. All of us had the time of our lives when we were in France. I would liketo thank the principal for providing for such an opportunity and also Ma'amSaman for organizing and accompanying us on our trip. It was a very touchingmoment when we had to leave France. I still miss this exceptional trip and itsurely was an experience which one would never forget.

As I came to know about the fact that in these summers we had a chance to goto France, I became really excited. After consulting my parents, I gave my nameforward to the college. The basic purpose of the trip was to enhance ourcommunication skills in French. Due to the immense importance of this verylanguage, I opted for this trip. I along with my other fellows left Pakistan on 1stof July. It was a 27 day trip. We had to stay with a French family who did notknow a single word of English, which was a blessing in disguise.

There we had to complete 60 hours of French language at "Institute de Touraine".Here there were many students from across the globe which made it a hub, wherepeople from different nationalities and religions can come together and interacted. We got an opportunity to explore the French culture and their lifestyle. We wereoften taken out to the castles and other places of attractions. By the end of thecourse, we were awarded diplomas, based on the test which we gave in class, which reflects our outstanding performance and keenness to learn Frenchlanguage.

As all good things must come to an end, this also did so. We returned back toPakistan on 27th July with a desire in our heart to go back there once again.

The trip to France was the greatest time of my life. It was even better than whatI could imagine in my wildest dreams, and it has had an immense impact on mylife. It was a learning experience for us in which we were given liberty unknownto us until then. We were responsible for our actions and I'm sure we didn'tdisappoint. We not only learnt French but how to interact with people fromdifferent backgrounds and cultures. One of the most important things I learntwas to always have an open mind!

It took us 24 hours to get to Tours. Unfortunately, our flight from Lahore toIslamabad was delayed for 5 hours due to bad weather. Our plane was waitingfor us in Islamabad when we arrived there. We were whisked to our plane andstarted the 9 and a half hour journey to Charles de Gaulle International Airportvia Milan. We stopped there for about an hour but had to stay in the plane. Atthis point, the excitement and the suspense had reached an all time high. Uponarrival, we were received at the Airport by a minibus arranged by the 'Institutde Touraine'. We were still in our school uniform and surprisingly it was reallycold. We had become really tired by now and slept through most of the 3 hourjourney. When we arrived in Tours we were exhausted but eager to meet our'famille d'accueil'. When Fahad, my roommate, and I met our 'mere francaise'we heaved a sigh of relief. She was very kind and soft spoken, and it was not atall difficult to communicate with her.

Our room was on the 2nd floor of her house, but it wasn't very big. Opposite uswas another room where a Japanese student was staying. The lady we were livingwith was called Madam Meunier. She also had 3 children around our age but weonly got to meet them once as they were away on their vacations. She was veryunderstanding and helpful. We had breakfast and dinner at the house, where wetalked exclusively in French. This helped us improve our French a lot.

Tours is a wonderful city. It is compact, full of beauty, overrun by students andextremely safe. We spent most of our time at the River Loire, the festive Guinguette, the Place de Plumereau (the main town square), Place de grande Marche and ofcourse at the Institut.

After a test on the first day we were placed into different classes and levels, andI was the only Pakistani in my class. We had classes during the day from Mondayto Friday and in between our classes we would spend a lot of time playing ping

pong. The classes were really interesting: there were a lot of group activities andwe were only allowed to speak in French. It was a wonderful experience.

On the alternate weekends we went to Paris twice. There, we saw legendarymonuments such as the Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, Musee Louvre, Place de Bastilleand Versailles and the Champs Elysees. The institute also arranged trips for usto Mont St Michel, Saint Malo and Chateau Chenonceau. All of these are incrediblybeautiful places and we took a lot of photographs.

We had dinner every night at 7:30 with our famille d'accueil. Our host preparedfood from the local cuisine for us. The food was delicious, and we had longdiscussions over dinner and told each other about our cultures. For lunch wewould eat at different restaurants, ranging from the Japanese (sushi) to theAlgerian ones (kefta).

The trip was an extraordinary experience for all of us. We had the opportunityto interact with student of different nationalities and age groups. Friendshipswere made, and we are still in contact with them through social networkingwebsites such as Facebook.

My only regret was that we were not allowed to spend more time in Paris. LastlyI am thankful to everyone who made this trip possible, especially the PrincipalFakir Syed Aijazuddin and Dr Saman Asif for arranging this trip and making ita success. If given the opportunity I would love to go to Tours again and this timestay for even longer than before, as even 3 weeks weren't enough to fully explorethe marvels that France had to offer.

Building upon the success of the trip last year to France, Aitchison College sent, for the second time, a group of 26 students and 1 teacher to the city of Tours. The basic purpose of this exercise was to offer the participants a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience an 'immersion course' in the French Language. Our host at Tours was the renowned Institut de Touraine which conducts similarcourses for students from around the globe. Indeed, both the Institut and thegeneral atmosphere around Tours provided for one of the most conduciveenvironments possible for learning of this nature.

Given that Tours is situated at the heart of the valley of the river Loire, studentshave remarkably easy access to a plethora of old French castle which are scatteredacross the region which has been declared a World Heritage site. That coupledwith the fact that Paris is only an hour away by the TGV train, puts the studentsin a situation whereby both educational and tourist facilities are readily availablein the best manner possible.

Furthermore, much to the contrary of the apprehensions of many, the people atTours are extremely friendly, helpful and comfortable with people of all sorts. Inparticular, our hosting families went through the extra ordeal to make sure thatwe got Halal and truly delicious food. The only problem which one could possiblyhave is that of communication, however, such problems are easily removed andany language barriers broken in a few days - such is the beauty of this practice.

The teaching itself was extraordinary: with up-to-date technology, seeminglyinfinite reading resources and completely dedicated and talented professors, even the most uninterested student is compelled to participate and even theweakest participant emerges enlightened after the course is complete.

Our boys managed to benefit of this exercise to the core, seizing every opportunityto learn and explore, be it French the language, French the culture or France thecountry. Undoubtedly, this trip has improved in one way or the other and is mustfor all those who wish to go in the future.

After an unforgettable experience in France in the summer of 2010, I knew Icould not pass up the opportunity of going back to the Institut de Touraine in2011. As it was my second visit, I was selected as one of the 4 group leaders inour contingent of Aitchisonians. This in itself was uncharted territory for me.Though I've been in positions of responsibility before, this was a brand new ballgame altogether, especially since I was given charge of the younger and lessfluent Francophones. However, the guys proved themselves as mature gentlemenand soon enough we had formed that classic Aitchisonian Fraternite andunderstanding amongst one another.

That said, this trip was not at all limited to bonding with our fellow Aitchisonians. It was about immersing ourselves in a foreign people and culture. And therecannot be a better way of doing that than living under the same roof as them.Jean-zeb (one of the many different ways the French people said Jehanzaeb Jang'sname) and I stayed with 'Les Barrieres', a family of 3. Along with a couple ofother students, we were 7 in total at the dinner-table. A German, an Omani, twoPakistanis and 3 locals; all conversing in French, eating French Food, living in aFrench maison: that kind of global interaction was like the punch line to a MasterCard advert. Priceless. That was an unforgettable experience.

The "globetrotting" did not stop there though. During our day-to-day routine, which consisted of classes at the Institut from 9 to 4, we met people of diversebackgrounds and different nationalities. The teaching style at the Institut wasunorthodox to say the least: we wrote and performed sketches, deciphered lyricsto songs, debated over cultural issues etc… all in French.

We visited Paris on the weekends. It did not surprise me that the Mona Lisa andthe Eiffel Tower had not changed since the last time I saw them a year ago, andafter making sure that the Sacre-Coeur and the Notre Dame had followed thesame precedent, I made my way to the Musee D'Orsay to stare at the works ofMonet and Van Gogh.

If I had to choose a favorite memory, it would probably be taking cooking lessonsfrom Mrs. Barriere. Either that or the peaceful train rides: the French countrysidetruly is remarkable.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend this program to anyone who, has an interestnot only in foreign languages, but also in foreign cultures, travelling, Gastronomieetc.

By the time our group landed in the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, there wasa feeling among us that a long overdue fulfilment of expectations was in order:we had been waiting for this trip for months and had even been forced to faceseveral hour long delays in Lahore. So now that we had finally arrived, it wassurprising to see that no one appeared as excited or thrilled as you would expectthem too; rather, nearly everyone was asleep on the bus ride to Tours. Even afterwe reached Tours in the night, everybody was so fatigued that we all just silentlyhopped into the cars of the French families we were staying with and went homewith them. However, the real fun was to begin the next morning. For many ofus, this was the first time abroad without a parent or an authority figure lumberingafter us, and it was a blast for each of us to explore the city with our friends.

In the early days, one of the trickiest aspects of the trip for me was settling intothe rhythms of everyday life in a French household, where I was sharing a roomwith Daniyal Farrukh (one of the Aitchisonians in the group). Naturally, thetransition from my lazy existence in Pakistan, to something less comfortable inFrance, was a challenge. But it was an educational one, and was made somewhateasier by the fact that the couple whose house we were staying in, Les Barrieres, were very genial, and they made their house feel like home for us. Thecommunication barrier that I had expected to be present was virtually non-existent, and we could converse with our hosts freely. Our daily life in a Frenchhome, shared with an Omani vet called Mohammed, and with a German studentnamed Marcus, was one of the most fascinating aspects of the trip.

From the very first Monday, we had classes five times a week at the 'Institut deTouraine', and it was there that the real culture shock began. A diverse group ofpeople were attending the language course, and it was a delight to be studyingin the same room as and befriending people from countries such as Holland,Spain, America, Canada, Mexico and China. The classes themselves were wonderful, and the teachers were extremely competent. The unusual methodology theyapplied to teach French turned out to be very effective, and both my written andspoken French improved greatly.

The city of Tours itself was indeed magnificent. It possessed a great amount ofvisual wonders which were revealed to us gradually. Most of the buildings werea sight to behold, and even the skies were breathtaking: they were absolutelyclear of pollution and dust, allowing the dull grey of the wispy clouds to accentuatethe other areas of the sky which were coloured a unique shade of blue that stillresonates in my mind. However, my favourite part of the city was the river LaLoire, and the weather, which remained superbly windy till the very last day.

There remain so many moments and excursions which I cannot cover: roamingaround Tours late at night with friends, both old and new; seeing monumentslike the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and Notre Dame up close; visiting the Louvre, and subsequently being disappointed in the Mona Lisa; sitting on the thrillingrides at the amusement park, Parc Asterix; having our tongues delighted by thedelicious food; sitting in ice cream parlours and laughing our heads off; seeingDa Vinci's mansion and marvelling at his inventions; and finally, saying goodbye. All of these combined to form one of the greatest single experiences of my life, and I am very grateful for it.

UNE RENCONTREAVEC MADAME MALEEHA KHWAJA
