We did the landscape design for Raas Jodhpur, India, along with architects, Lotus Praxis Initia-tive. It is a luxury boutique hotel in the old city of Jodhpur, which features 17thand 18th century period structures that have been restored using traditional crafts and materials, to provide visi-tors with a sensual contemporary experience. It won the prestigious award in the Holiday cat-egory at the World Architecture Festival, Barce-lona in November 2011. The jury said ‘It was a difficult choice, due to the diversity and excel-lence of the category. We were impressed by this sophisticated response to the historic city. The master plan and form are both modern and authentic to the place. Without aping the past, local craftsmanship is adopted and expressed in a contemporary language. The team has pro-duced a timeless building which is an exem-plary and uniquely Indian, and could become a role model for future development in India.’

World Heritage Site , UNESCO Along with Matra Architects we did the re-de-velopment Master Plan for the Temple Complex way back in 2004 . Parts of the proposal have been implemented now . A series of open spaces have been reclaimed and encroached build-ings have given way to public open spaces and movement system has been streamlined. One of the important concept was to create large continous parts of forest areas which connect the upper forest and the river Bagmati . River cleansing strategies were suggested . Afforesta-tion of the hills apart from a plan that looked at each building , its charac-ter and physical condition. Strategies were suggested for adaptive use of the building , its restoration and redesign of the walled open spaces.

38Buddhist I nterpretat ion CentreSarnath, Uttar Pradesh
Sarnath near Benaras marks a landmark in the pilgrims places associated with Budha. Here about one hundred miles from Bodh Gaya, he came across the five ascetics he had practiced with for so long. There, in a deer park, he preached his first sermon, which is called “setting he wheel of the teaching in motion.” He explained to them the Four Noble truths and the Eightfold Path. They became his very first disciples and the beginnings of the Sangha or community of monks.
39
This site for the Buddist Interpretation Centre with the Memorial has layers of history attached to it and accord-ing to traditions the Chowkhadi Stu-pa site marks the place where Budha met his ascetics friends who became his disciples and proceeded to deliver the first sermons on the four Noble Truths, the Noble Eighfold Path, and the Middle Ways, three of the most important concepts of Buddhism. The following program has been gen-erated and is partly guided by the re-strictions imposed by ASI for any new building activity within 100 metres of protected monuments listed under it. the restrictions apply to new con-structions from the fence of the monu-ment however, it allows for landscape activity or development to be carried out within the restricted zone after the regulatory approval procedures.
40
The landscape design strategies is inspired by the heritage site, teach-ing and life of Budha. The site is to be developed as series of groves and gardens that will allow people to connect to themselves and be draw inward. Association and inspiration is sought from the traditional architec-ture, references to other historic sites associated with Buddha, through lit-erature, paintings and zen gardens.
41The circumbulatory pathways at the entrance is a metaphorical journey through various gardens that encourages people to-wards “mindfulness” by connecting them to various elements of Nature and allows them to draw inward and still the mind until they reach the Memorial Garden. Along the spiral path-way a mural with water body narrates the life of the founder. The pathway leads to the upper level with the Sculpture Court that can be used for display of temporary or perma-nent sculptures or crafts. Set amidst a pool of lotuses in this garden is the Meditation Hall. The landscape is designed to modify climate, bring wild life, create spaces for medita-tion and rooms that allow uninterrupted view of gardens.
42Taj Mahal Urban RedevelopmentAgra, Uttar Pradesh
Taj Ganj as it is known today was once the main bazaar, commercial district of Agra as historic accounts of Lahuri and Kando tell us ‘different kinds of merchandise from every land, varieties of goods from every country, all sorts of luxuries of the time and various kinds of necessities of civilization and comfortable liv-ing brought from all parts of the world’ were for sale in this market, flourishing under the imperial patronage. Kalim composed a poem on Agra devoting 26 verses to describe the abundance of drama in these lanes of the imperial bazaar, which along with the caravanserai and houses built by the merchants out side the pe-riphery of the royal complex came to be recognized as a city in itself called Mumtazabad, city of Mumtaz.
Built for utilitarian purposes the architecture of Taj Ganj is in a stark contrast to the paradisiacal archi-tecture of mausoleum. Treated with less detail, it can suitably reconstructed with the help of Lahau-ri and Kando description of the premises. Their description of the complex explains the layout to be a square divided into four quadrants, by two streets runnig north-south and east-west, of unequal width

We were hired by the firm REPL, Delhi as consultants to do the Mas-ter Plan for re-development around the famous World Heritage Site – Taj Mahal. The re-development proposal looked into all aspects of movement systems, the adjoining urban devel-opment, services and infrastructure, parks and gardens and public open spaces. It went through presentations to the legislative assembly and other local governing bodies for approv-al processes and implementation.

46S t r e e t sThe Taj ganj is complex and with pending ruling of the Supreme Court Order awaiting implemen-tation. The focus of the project in these areas remains as ‘Surface in-tervention’ along the important spine Mian Nazir Street in Taj ganj and various nodes along the route, the Chowk in Taj Ganj, various Dar-waza’s, exploring the possibility of organizing festivals, weekly mar-kets, etc. The proposal looks at other arterial routes taken primarily by tourists. Along these streets leading from Agra fort to West Gate, Purani Mandi to Taj through the park to West Gate, Purani Mandi to Fate-habad road leading to Maharaja Agrasen Statue Parking lot along West of Taj through the Park to West Gate, East Gate loop road from Shilpgram, the proposal looks at solid waste management, drainage improvement, amenities, energy ef-ficient lighting, these streetscape treatment, location and charac-ter of the open spaces, landmark buildings, visual and spatial links.

This was an International Urban Design Competition open to all SAARC nations that we won as a team in as-sociation With Archiplan Pvt Ltd (Nepal) and Abrd Architects, March 2011. At present, we are working on the design of the almost 100 acre campus in Maidan Garhi, Delhi. This project is one of the most prestigious campus design projects in India set up as a commitment to the United Nations by Government of India. It is proposed that every drop of rainwater will be harvested, waste water will be treated in landscape, native plants will be re-introduced and a small forest habit as a central green space will be created. The project is unique as it looks at

This was a competition design that we won along with Stephane Paumier Architects for Islamic University of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir. The site had two parts one for housing and the main campus and is about 100 acres. The main feature was to bring the elements of landscape of Kashmir into the gardens in a stylized way while addressing the issues of water management, drainage, and celebrating the poetics of water through the gardens design. The building were designed as a new typology that took into consideration sur-rounding context of the mountains, climate, sun and shadows through the year and working with traditional typology for present time and construction materials.

The design proposal envisages the creation of a unique Urban park which will celebrate the fas-cinating tale of the Great Arc within the natural matrix of the site. The Story of the Great Arc is to be brought to life by the symbolic representation of the Great Trigonometrical Survey in the design of the Park. The north-south linear configuration of the Garden of The Great Arc is reminder of the journey undertaken by the intrepid surveyors from the southern tip to the Indian Peninsula to the norhtern reaches of the subcontinent at the base of the Himalayas. The triangulated pathways traverse the Garden connecting at the apex of the triangles in specialized small gardens. These will alos become locations for specially commisioned sculptures depicting the story of The Great Arc.

The brief for the project was interesting and out of the box which attracted us to the project and also we know the architects and the client from before but had not worked with them professionally. The idea was great and so we went all out to create an interesting landscape. A landscape that was contemporary and would provide space and room for lighting and for outdoor garden furniture.
63
64We share with you the dilemma that we face as landscape architects. The budget for the project is done before hand or is done without consulting a landscape architect. Typically when proposed by an architect or contractor it can be way off. Like in many projects we invest a lot on the building but on soft services like project management we do not invest intelligently( good project managers are rare) and the budget goes off.
In the end landscape budget is reduced to bare minimum. So all the efforts that a but in design, design development, working drawings and BOQ - go out of the window and then a compromise in Design starts.
