2.1 General Infrmatin
2.1.1 O!"ecti#es
On completion of this chapter you !ill be able to:
8escribe the components that mae up the AC-.
Give e;amples of ho! the components can be configure in net!ors.
8escribe the features that ifferentiate the types of controllers
8escribe the communication path!ays bet!een AC- moules.

2.2 System O#er#ie&
%he AC- is a scalable #LC #rogrammable Logic ControllerB evelope by A&& to
serve an e;ample of the marets sho!n belo!? from small to large machines. It is
configure using the stanar I(C/11"1 programming languages !hich maes it easyto configure? unerstan an maintain.
It features some benefits such as:6
(ase of !iring 4 the base components can be installe an !ire !ithout a nee
for the more e;pensive intelligent moules.
)euce stoc 4 the evices use are fle;ible in their application? !hich means
that they can be configure in ifferent !ays? reucing the nee to hol stoc
!hich only has one use.
Simple to install an scalable 4 it has a scalable architecture than maes it future
proof.
Cost savings 4 the system components are po!erful an price attractive.

2.' C() Terminal Bases
2.'.1 C() Terminal Base O#er#ie&
Currently there " types of terminal bases that the processor units plug in to. %hese are
the %&-116(%7? %&-216(%7 an %&-'16(%7. %he mile number of the part
number inicates the number of e;pansion slots available? so for e;ample on the
%&-'16(%7 there are ' e;pansion slots? sho!n in the iagram above far right han
sie imageB.
%he (%7 esignation of the terminal base part number inicates that it is (thernet
compatible.
(ach base has a special har!are coing on it !hich is a plastic strip? stopping
moules !hich are inappropriate for the terminal base being plugge into it.
All terminal bases are mounte on stanar 8I+ rail? using a spring loae mount.
%hey are simply clippe onto the 8I+ rail an snappe into place.
Communication moules can be plugge in to the e;pansion slots? an all C#$
terminal bases support all types of AC- processor moules.
