Albinoni’s AdagioTomaso Albinoni/Remo Giazotto
Arranged by
Lauren Keiser
2
YAS61F
Performance NotesThis Adagio was part of a Sonata a tre in G minor by Tomaso Albinoni, without opus number; the only remaining parts are that of the figured bass (in printed form) and two first violin fragments in manuscript form. The part of the figured bass and the two fragments were sent by the State Library of Dresden to Mr. Remo Giazotto soon after the end of the Second World War, after the thematic index of Albinoni’s works (R. Giazotto, Albinoni, musico di violino dilettante veneto [1671–1750], Milan, Bocca, 1945) had already been prepared and published.
The first move towards the reconstruction of the work was provided by the realiza-tion of the figured bass, to which a brief introduction was added. Using this figured bass and the two thematic elements (six measures in all), the whole was pieced together and composed in full accordance with the harmonic tissue suggested by the figured bass.
Performance Suggestions1) First Ending (m. 28): In the original this is not optional and should be played. However, much of the arpeggio middle section has been shortened, thus changing the architecture of the work which can support going directly to the second ending. This is the conductor’s choice.
2) At m. 49, the cellos and bases may play arco. The bases would resume pizzicato at m. 65, and the cellos at m. 74.
3) At measure 76, while marked senza fraseggiare (play in strict rhythm), if the optional octave in the first violins is not played, consider a breve fermata on the third beat as follows:

The Carl Fischer Performance Series for Orchestra and String Orchestra has four different performance levels to provide you with a highly focused repertoire for your orchestra and string orchestra. Each level has been carefully designed and graded, within specific guidelines, so that each piece in a level will work for your ensemble when it achieves that level. Each level is also color coded for ease in finding the series that will be appropriate for your orchestra, as it develops.
Within each grade level, you will find selections in a variety of styles and genres designed to meet all of your performance and teaching needs. The Carl Fischer composers and arrangers are some of the most respected writers in the business. Their music is dynamic, fresh and eminently worthy of your attention.
Young String Orchestra Series¸ Playable by second- and third-year ensembles¸ Extending to third position¸ Keys still carefully considered¸ Addition of separate Violin II and Viola parts (also a Viola T.C. part included)¸ Still limited independence of parts
