THE CITY

Photo: wiseguy71

Protected by ancient walls with seven fortifying towers, Alghero lies between the sea and a green hinterland ofolive trees and vines. Although well geared for tourismwith its excellent sh restaurants and countless littleshops in the Centro Storico (Old Town), it retains anunhurried charm. With long beaches of soft sandstretching along its winding coastline, sheltered by quietpine forests and dotted with bars and hotels, it oers arelaxing holiday mix of sun, sea, sand and small city.

In the citadel’s web of narrow streets, washing hangs beneath the shuttered windows of tall, tightly packedhouses and peeling stucco reveal the ancient stone ofbuildings inhabited for 800 years. Street names are inItalian and Catalan, a dialect that has been spoken heresince the 13th century.

Bars and restaurants spill out onto cobbled streets and little piazzas, their tables shaded by stylish creamumbrellas. They line the great ramparts, too, aordinggrand views and cooling sea breezes.

The real magic of Alghero comes with the sunset. To strollalong the walls, or sit at a bar and watch the old city’sbuildings glow a peachy-apricot colour as the sun sets in aball of orange re behind the headland across the bay, isone of life’s special pleasures. Get an outdoor table at oneof the rampart restaurants, to dine by ickeringcandlelight, and the romance is complete.

The narrow streets of the Old Town are made for window-shopping and buying. Via Carlo Alberto,shoulder-to-shoulder crowded, is the main shopping street.Elegant boutiques line up on Via Gilbert Ferret. Strollalong Via Roma for fashion and jewellery.

Alghero is famous for the glowing, deep red coral found othe nearby Riviera del Corallo coast. Across the square, Il Ghiotto has a tempting arrayof local wines, liqueurs, olive oils and speciality foods.

Via Simon is a good street for foodies. Buy some of the best regional produce at Antichi Sapori (at number 2), andEnodolciaria (at 24).
