PIN CODE THIEVES TARGET PUBS

You are at risk from fraudsters if you pay in a pub using a Chip and PIN card reader with no privacy shield. Pubs and bars are being targeted by gangs who spy on drinkers when they enter their PIN code, an activity known as shoulder surfing, according to the Metropolitan Police. The cards are then stolen from patrons’ bags and wallets and the PIN is used to withdraw cash at nearby ATMs.But when Chip and PIN machines with a privacy shield were installed in pubs in Wandsworth, south London, the crime rate fell from 30 incidents a month to just one.Lavender Hill Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector Peter McGarry told Which? ‘I believe this is a nationwide problem, and would like to see banks and other card machine providers do more to ensure that bar staff are made aware of the problem and are offered machines with PIN guards.’Card providers will refund fraud losses if you haven’t been reckless or careless, so always shield the key pad when entering your PIN.

PAYDAY LOANS COST A FORTUNE

Payday loan firms, such as Wonga, which offers short-term credit, are quoting interest rates as high as 4,214%, while interest rates of over 1,700% are not uncommon. A Wonga customer who borrows £300 for 28 days at 4,214% could typically expect to repay nearly £90 in interest.Late loan repayments at many firms can lead to customers incurring a further charge (typically £20).The firms we checked have a Consumer Credit licence, but others don’t. Nigel Cates, deputy director of consumer credit at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) said: ‘Many payday firms are unlicensed and are the cause of significant problems, which is why the OFT is taking action to crack down on the sector.’Which? credit expert Martyn Saville said: ‘Which?

thinks charging £90 for borrowing £300 over a month is outrageous. These firms too often cash in on the desperation of the financially excluded, many of whom would be better off borrowing from a credit union or seeking free advice from a

More and more shoppers are ditching regular mobile phones for smartphones. Around 75% of sales are now smartphones, according to latest figures from Carphone Warehouse.Making the switch is easy if you’re on a contract, but if you prefer pay-as-you-go, is a smartphone an affordable option?Which? Mobile, the website we set up to help you find the best phone and deal for your needs, has found that prices vary greatly between handsets. For instance, Apple’s popular iPhone 4 costs around £500 on pay-as-you-go, while the Best Buy Samsung Wave, which has very similar features, is available for about £300. Or, if you prefer a keypad to a touch screen, you can pick up the Best Buy Blackberry Curve 8520 for less than £150.If you’re willing to put a little time into researching the features of each device, you can bargain alternatives to much more expensive models.Above, we’ve picked four of the cheapest pay-as-you-go smartphones on the market. SUPERMARKETS CONTINUE TO INSIST BIGGERIS BETTER

Supermarkets are still up to their old ‘value-pack’ tricks, Which? can reveal. Yet again, Tesco and Asda are promoting larger packs as better value - even when they’re not. Our trip to Asda uncovered a 56 pack of Finish All in 1 dishwasher tablets for a ‘mega value’ £13.58 - more than £1.50 dearer than buying two 28 tablet packs. And on Asda’s website, we found a ‘better value’ four pack of Princes tuna for £5.38 - when you could buy four individual tins for a total cost of £4.Meanwhile, Tesco was still offering a

is now on the internet

Debbie, who plays Roy’s Rolls worker Anna Windass, is proud to show off her amazing new image. Only a few months ago she was

dressed in baggy cardies and tracksuit pants, just like her soap character. Life imitated art and by July, 5’2” Anna rolled in at over eleven stone and a size sixteen. “I didn’t notice that I’d put so much weight on. Then I saw a picture of me in a magazine with my daughter and I just burst into tears in the supermarket. That was kind of the beginning of it really. It was a wake-up call… My belly was so big I couldn’t see my feet and being short in height I was turning into a little barrel! I knew I had to do something about it. Once I put my mind to changing the way I looked and found a routine I could do at home which I loved, it was surprisingly easy to get my fi gure back.”The mum-of-three started exercising for the fi rst time in her life. “I also tackled my eating habits and ditched Corrie’s gorgeous canteen cooking – no more Hot Pots for me! I’ve swapped chocolate, chips with curry sauce and desserts for healthier veggie crudités or olives, and I’m eating smaller portions. I’ve also swapped beer for vodka and slimline tonic when I go out.”Debbie. 44, adds: “I turned to athlete Andy Titterall (an ex-rugby international) who’s an expert on sports science, to show me a routine I could do on my own at home. I decided to go down this route because you never see an untoned or overweight athlete. I’ve been doing my workout three times a week for over four months now, and the weight has really dropped off. I’m confi dent it will stay off too because I’ve been slimming down over a sensible, steady period. I’ve been using a simple no-nonsense mix of cardio and body weight exercises like ‘the plank’ and press-ups that really work.”Her determination paid off and in only four and a half months, she dropped four dress sizes from a size sixteen to a size eight. “In a way, that picture’s done me a massive favour because I’m back to ‘me’! Now I want to share my exercise secrets and show other real women just like me how to blitz away their body bulge!”

The result is brand new fi tness DVD – Debbie Rush’s Bulge Buster Workout.

Debbie made the brave decision to allow her ”before” picture to appear on the cover alongside her “after” image…

“I hate the ‘before’ pic! I remember at the time people saying ‘Well, you know,

when you have the ‘after’ pic on there you won’t feel bad’ but I still hate it! It’s like when you put a picture up on the fridge and it reminds you not to eat … in one way it’s good because you’ll pick it up and go ‘Oh my god I’m never going back there!’ I hope what it will do is inspire real women to know that that’s what I looked like and that you can do it! Also, you can tell on the DVD it hasn’t been tampered with, it hasn’t been Photoshopped, You can notice that my belly button’s a little bit skew-whiff from having three babies but it’s just genuinely true and honest and that’s how I was.”

Debbie admits she doesn’t have a great deal in common with her Corrie character Anna. “She’s a great character to play. I think the thing I have in common with her is that I also am a mum. And the same as all women out there with children you’d do anything to make ends meet and to make sure your children are happy. She just fundamentally wants to

make sure that her family is happy. That’s the only thing I’ve got in common with her – nothing else whatsoever! We couldn’t be more different.”

If she could meet Anna in real life, she’d give her a spot of advice… “I’d tell her not to put up with the rubbish she puts up with from her husband!” [Husband Eddie played by Steve Huison].

One of her storylines has been Anna’s son Gary’s (Mikey North) post-traumatic stress syndrome, which he suffered after returning to the Street from serving with the Army in Afghanistan. It was a topic Debbie was pleased had been brought to light and she researched thoroughly for her role.

“I went to London and I met quite a lot of lads at barracks down there at Hyde Park who’d been to Afghanistan and I met a lot of wives, girlfriends, and just basically chatted with people about what it was

All about •5

like to have a member of the family out there. To be honest, it wasn’t hard to imagine because I’ve got children of my own and I think it would be absolutely terrible, I’d be worried sick.”

Debbie has been married to husband Andrew Rush since 1988. They have three children: Tom and Poppy front up popular Manchester band, The Sticks, and son William who is an actor, playing Josh Stevenson inWaterloo Road, has now also joined Tom and Poppy in the band.

Does she mind her children following a showbiz career?

“If you’ve got a passion and you want to do something, it’s just the same as if you want to be a doctor or a teacher. You have to have patience to go into this business that I’m in and it’s what they really want to do. If they wanted to do anything else I would support them and it’s the same here. It’s a hard business because it’s full of knock-backs and rejections but if it’s what they want to do then I’m going to support them as I would in another walk of life.”

Debbie doesn’t want to hark back to discussing jobs she had before her acting career. “I’ve done lots of things but I’m an actress now in Coronation Street and I’ve done lots of acting jobs before that. I did Hollyoaks and Shameless and a couple of fi lms. I’ve worked really hard to get where I’ve got to. I was just an ordinary working mum before that and then I went and trained for fi ve or six years to get to where I got to.”

She recalls the point when she fi rst joined the Coronation Street cast… “What happened when I got there was that I was put under enormous pressure – that nobody put on me except myself! And I really wanted to make it work and I ended up, like people do, eating extra out of stress. It was diffi cult – I was working long hours and I had the family… Do you remember what it was like when you were little and you had school dinners? I was doing that in the afternoon then I was gong home and eating another dinner in the evening. So, for the little size of my body, it didn’t work out and I ended up putting weight on. I’m only 5’2”! I’m tiny.

“I knew what I should be eating – I always knew what I should be eating – but it’s hard to motivate yourself and do that.”

So what was the fi rst step she took? “Just everything that I’ve done in the DVD. I started exercising and went on a diet and it was really, really hard for the fi rst couple of weeks but I just stayed focused and I got there.”

Another big bonus from her weight loss was the need for a whole new wardrobe. “Totally! Nothing fi tted! It was funny. Halfway through I thought, I’m going to have to buy some stuff! I remember buying a size ten and thinking I’m tiny! And a size ten now’s just too big on me…”

What has husband Andrew’s reaction been?

“He’s pleased that I feel confi dent. He loves me anyway. I keep saying that to everyone that’s interviewed me but it’s totally true. He fancied me in a bin bag! He’s just a lovely husband. He’s just pleased because my confi dence is back and I think confi dence is a big thing. I’m very confi dent in my job but outside in the real world, I was very unconfi dent because of my shape. Now that I’ve lost weight, I’m just very confi dent and Andrew’s noticed that and the kids have been brilliant and supportive. It’s really funny because the boys keep picking me up and throwing me round for a joke!”

Does she still have naughty days and certain weaknesses?

“Absolutely! Oh, sugar, I’ve got a sugar fetish. I’m terrible! Sweets and chocolate. I’ve been at my goal weight now since the beginning of November, and when I’ve felt like something, I’ve had it and I’ve not even put a pound on. I think it’s because I did it properly, sensibly. And also, all the way through it, I would have one day off and then

I’d get straight back on it the next day so that taught me to be self-disciplined.

“I think you have to realise that you are going to think Oooh, I fancy that! And you could deprive yourself of it forever, but life’s too short. It’s just that I don’t want to have a weight issue, I want to be healthy so that’s seriously one of the reasons I’ve done it – to feel healthy and fi t. I don’t want to lead a totally boring life and not be able to have a bar of chocolate if I fancy one. It’s just that I won’t be having one every day. That’s the difference.”

Will the weight loss change Anna’s character?

“You know what, I hope not. And if it does, it won’t be my choice!”

Top tips“For the fi rst couple of weeks, you don’t have a treat. You’ve got to really stay focused and absolutely stick to the plan.

“Once you see the weight loss, which you will see in a few weeks if you stick to the plan and you’re dead honest with yourself, know what you’re putting in your mouth, then once a week have a treat meal, whatever you want, and get straight back on it the day after. That way, you don’t feel totally deprived and then when you get to the end and reach your goal weight, you’ve already done it by having a treat now and again so you’re going to stick with it.”

Highs“I can remember standing on the scales and I remember getting under nine stone and thinking OMG I thought I’d never see that again! Now I’ve dropped down to eight stone three and I am gobsmacked.”

Lows“Halfway through, just before I got to under nine stone, just a pound over nine, I nearly lost faith. I can remember thinking there’s no point, it’s not working, I still felt wobbly. But I woke up the next day and thought Right come on, back on! and I just carried on. I think everybody will go through that. I’ve always been a stickler from the fi rst moment I did this that I

was going to be really honest. I know so many women that have lost weight and it’s hard! Halfway through is your sticking point in your journey. You just want it to hurry up. But unfortunately, your body will just lose what it’s going to lose. You’ve just got to stick with it and keep focused.”

Debbie sums up her efforts: “If I can inspire one woman out there, just one who really is struggling, to learn to love herself again then I’ll be happy.”

Debbie’s DVDThere are 7 sections to the workout: it is suitable for people of all ages and fi tness levels Warm Up CircuitGet your blood pumping and ready to work! Imagination is an essential ingredient. A bedroom, particularly a master bedroom, should be your escape from the work-all-day world of stress and strain. It should be welcoming. It should be romantic. And it should refl ect your unique tastes. It is, after all, your inner sanctum and only the select few are invited to share it. So why shouldn’t it be elegant and comfortable, too.Combining great bedroom designs and decorations can give your room a whole new look without doing any major construction or remodelling. Even the look of your fl oors can be changed just by adding some throw rugs and you won’t believe the difference an inexpensive coat of paint can make. Lighting can really set the mood in your bedroom. Buy some lamps to put on your bureaus and tables to add character to the room and provide some accent lighting.Accessories that you pick out will turn your bedroom from boring to beautiful! Sometimes moving things around can make a big difference and make your room appear more spacious or more cozy depending what your needs may be.

When Christopher Eccleston read the scripts for the major new seven-part drama serial The

Shadow Line, his immediate reaction was that he wanted to be part of it.

He describes the series as “a genre piece, a thriller – a psychological thriller, a meditation on good and bad, a meditation on morality”.

When police offi cers discover the body of a man, shot at close range, they soon realise the victim is Harvey Wratten, head of one of the UK’s largest crime organisations. Having served two years of an eighteen-year sentence for his part in importing £11m worth of heroin into the country, Wratten had only just been released from jail under the very rarely obtained royal pardon.

Assigned to investigate Wratten’s death is Detective Inspector Jonah Gabriel (Chiwetel Ejiofor), in his fi rst case since being shot during a botched police operation that left his partner dead. He has amnesia, caused by the bullet still lodged in his brain, which leaves him doubtful of his own moral compass and his colleagues regard him with suspicion. Gabriel has to follow an increasingly complicated line of investigation, all the while wondering whether he can trust anyone, not least himself.

On the other side of the line is Joseph Bede (Christopher Eccleston), an

associate of Wratten’s, who has built up a legitimate fruit and fl ower business during Harvey’s time in prison. Now, driven by a profound personal tragedy, Joseph fi nds himself planning one last deal: a massive drugs operation that he is desperate to see through, so he can retire and step out of the business for ever.

Watching from the shadows is the brilliantly lethal puppet master – Gatehouse (Stephen Rea). He knows how to fi nd people. He knows their secrets and he’ll fi nd them when they are at their most vulnerable.

As Gabriel begins to unravel the threads around Wratten’s organisation, the web of intrigue becomes more complex – and the line that divides the players becomes increasingly blurred.

Christopher explains the moral dilemma faced by his character…

“Joseph Bede is a devoted husband. He is an accountant, who trained originally in insurance, and because of events in the drama he is pushed forward to lead an operation of drug smuggling. What he is trying to do is to keep himself alive materially because of his wife’s illness, and at the same time keep himself alive spiritually – and, of course, the two things are not mutually complementary. So he wades into a very grey moral area.”

Bede and Gabriel work almost in parallel on the same investigation but never meet.

“I think they are very different people, and I will be honest – I did not study Chiwetel’s character [Gabriel] as I studied my own. They work on different sides of the law for a start – I would say they are very different men. One is more introverted perhaps, Bede, because of his work. But, of course, we don’t know what Chiwetel’s character was like before the bullet in the brain; and indeed he doesn’t know what he was like, that is part of the drama. We didn’t talk about the job, I think we were aware that we were carrying two very different storylines, he wasn’t aware of what I was

doing and I wasn’t aware of what he was doing.”

Was Christopher surprised when he fi rst read the scripts?

“I was puzzled at fi rst, it takes two or three reads. Drama scripts are not really meant to be read, drama scripts are meant to be broadcast and watched with all the visual clues and information that one gets from television and fi lm. It’s very complex, it is like a Swiss watch really – the complexity and the way that things interlock, plots parallel each other. I was very, very intrigued.”

Christopher reveals that he had already worked before with Lesley Sharp who plays his wife Julie. “We worked together on Second Coming. I was in great company and have seen some fantastic performances emerge during the course of the shoot… Sometimes actors will do things in front of your eyes that will take your breath away and that happened a lot – with Malcolm Storry [who plays Maurice Crace] in particular, and Stephen Rea.

Can he compare The Shadow Line to anything else?

“I can’t compare it to anything else and it is diffi cult when you have been so closely involved in something to actually say what it is. I think the most important thing about it is that it credits its intended audience with great intelligence. It does not offer simplistic plot twists, and it doesn’t offer simplistic takes on human psychology. It has taken a world entirely of its own. It is going to be very stylish and intelligent, and I think that’s quite rare.”

Chiwetel Ejiofor’s fi rst reaction to his character and the plot was that Gabriel was a fascinating guy, and the plot dealt with an area of the police that he was really intrigued by… “The whole concept of this sprawling investigation that takes on all these multi-layers and complex avenues. I thought that all the other characters that were in the piece were amazing as well. You’re following these two major and very different storylines which are comfortably interweaving and connecting in different ways. [The script] felt very honest from the point of view of the characters, and it felt like it really wanted to get involved with the stories of these people. In a way the crime and the investigation of the crime are the backdrop for these really complex characters who are brought to perdition – that’s what is unique about this.”

Was it diffi cult to play a character who doesn’t even know who he is?

“I found it exciting to play that because every scene, no matter how small it is, is informed by his own personal investigation to try and uncover his own narrative. His struggle to do that is a really integral part of the story and it upsets and unbalances all the relationships he has. So it was great to be able to play such a strong and thorough sub-text through everything. He’s somebody who works on a number of different levels, and that’s always a great thing to play.”

Honey (KIERSTON WAREING)

L to R: Jonah Gabriel (CHIWETEL EJIOFOR), Gatehouse (STEPHEN REA) and Joseph Bede (CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON)

Chiwetel reveals how he prepared for the role. “I took it from the perspective of knowing as much as he knows about it, which is probably not very much. It’s one of these characters where you uncover the journey that he’s going on, with him – especially in terms of his personal investigation into his amnesia – but also in his work investigation which is the death of a gangster.”

What was it like being back in London for fi lming?

“It was great to be back in London and it was defi nitely a lot of fun and a real treat as part of the job, even though the traffi c was a killer!”

What are the things he misses most about LA when he’s over here fi lming?

“Apart from the sunshine? I do enjoy being out in LA, but it’s funny, I defi nitely enjoy splitting my time between the two. But at the moment my whole set up is LA, so I have a lot of people that I miss and a lot of projects that I’m involved in. It’s the whole thing that I always like to get back to, but also at the same time I’m slightly torn because the same is true of London.”

What can the audience expect from The Shadow Line?

“I think it’s something that’s thrilling and engaging. It’s got really great writing in it and I think it’s going to look amazing and pretty beautiful. You’ve just got to follow the twists and turns as they happen. I think it’s a really exciting and engaging piece of drama.”

Kierston Wareing explains what attracted her to the role about the role of Detective Sergeant Lia Honey.

“Well, she is very different to what I normally do. I’ve never played a detective, I’m always on the other side playing the criminal, so that was completely different for me, a complete change. And she is very action-based and I have always wanted to do action. Working against Chiwetel helped, it was just a fantastic opportunity for me.”

What’s Honey’s relationship like with Gabriel?

“We are work partners – she’s very dedicated to her work, he’s very dedicated to his work. I’m a bit wittier, a bit more sarcastic, but they are

both very dedicated. If something happens they both go together and just get on with it.”

You mentioned you have some action-based scenes?

“I had a big fi ght scene with Sean Gilder (Robert Beatty), which was fantastic. I did my own stunts – and in the end I actually did do that back fl ip! And the stunt guy goes: ‘Kierston, honestly I have worked in some Hollywood fi lms, with some big people like Angelina who do their own stunts and you should be proud of yourself’. And I really am! Never in a million years did I think I would do that. But the weird thing was the day we did it nothing went wrong, and then right at the end there was an accident. It was nothing – just Sean swinging the gun around – but it hit me on the cheek.

But they have kept the blood in, so it’s real blood – and I’m proud of that!”

Were the action scenes the most enjoyable aspect of this job?

“Yeah, that was my favourite part – and doing the chase scenes with Chiwetel, running around the tube station. I asked Chiwetel if he was looking forward to the action scenes. And he was like: ‘Not really Kierston, no.’ [Laughs]. I was like ‘I can’t wait!’”

For those of us with savings, it’s not a great time. Most deposit accounts pay less than 1%, yet, we still want access to our money when we need it.

But there are still ways to build a savings nest egg and get a worthwhile return on your money. We asked personal fi nance expert John Husband to give us his tips on making the most of our savings.1. Make it a DateTo make sure you save regularly, set up a monthly payment into a savings account. Also, whenever you get a pay or pension increase, increase the amount you save - this makes saving near painless. To work out how much you can save, keep a check of every penny you spend for a month, then set a budget that covers all the essentials and see how much is left.

2. Be preparedYour fi rst priority should be to build up a ‘rainy day’ reserve for emergencies. Ideally aim for three months income in accounts you can draw on immediately.

3. Take aimSaving is easier if you set yourself goals such as paying for a holiday, Christmas, presents, a car or your dream retirement home.

4. Beat the taxmanHe takes at least 20p out of every £1 interest you earn - if you let him.But you don’t have to. If you’re a taxpayer, use tax-free havens such as Individual Savings Accounts – ISAs - to put your money beyond his reach. You can put anything from £1 up to £5,340 into a cash ISA this tax year – and your partner can do the same. An ideal home for that rainy day reserve.Other tax-free havens include National Savings Certifi cates and Premium Bonds – all Ernie’s prizes are tax-free. For regular savings Friendly Society plans are an ideal way to turn small sums into a nest egg for grandchildren. If your spouse is a non-taxpayer, or pays less tax than you, it’s possible to reduce or even avoid paying tax altogether by putting your savings in their name.5. Be a detectiveStart by fi nding the ‘Best Buy’ savings tables in your newspaper, or on money comparison websites.

Now for the detective work. Better rates are offered on accounts operated on the Internet or by phone only. If you ‘re not comfortable with that weed those out. Many ‘best buy’ rates are infl ated by temporary bonuses paid for anything from 3-12 months. Exclude those where the bonus lasts for less than a year. Now, check what access the account offers. Fixed notice and fi xed term accounts pay more, but that’s no good if your money is beyond reach when you need it. So be sure that enough of your savings are accessible in an emergency.

6. Sleep tightNo investment is worth sleepless nights, so don’t put your money with providers you don’t know or are uncertain of, simply because they offer fantastic rates.Remember the Icelandic banks! If a deal looks too good to be true it usually is.

7. Disloyalty paysFew providers offer better terms to loyal customers nowadays. Most sucker you in with a great deal hoping you’ll be too lazy to move your money when the deal ends.So shop around regularly to be sure you still have the best paying account. If you have one with a temporary bonus put the expiry date in your diary.8. Beware the infl ation dragonFew accounts pay rates that match, let alone beat, infl ation. The Government intends to relaunch Index-Linked National Savings Certifi cates and the last ones offered tax-free bonuses that matched infl ation plus a percentage point or so on top. If these offer the same, then grab some.Otherwise the only sure way to protect yourself is to invest in real assets, such as buying your home - if you can afford to.

8 Ways To Make The Most OfYour Savings

It has been great growing weather for new young shoots and seedlings but it is just starting to be noticeable that there is slug and snail damage appearing.

There are many ways to limit the amount of slug damage to the plants, the easiest way is to sprinkle slug pellets around the borders but this is not thought to be ideal by many people. Pets can eat the pellets and also poisoned slugs will be eaten by the birds, toads and hedgehogs in the garden, which really won’t do them any good and can be fatal. By far the best way to reduce the slug numbers is to collect up all the slugs (and snails) during the evening hours when the slugs are active and deposit them far from home, this is time consuming and a job that a lot of folk won’t like doing but at least it reduces the amount of slugs and the damage done to your prized plants without the use of chemicals. Since snails and slugs like a damp, dark place to hide it’s worth placing pieces of planks or paving slabs in the borders, here they will gather overnight. In the morning turn over the slabs to reveal the slugs and snails, which you can remove or leave for the birds. An effective biological slug control is available in the form

gardening ALAN NEWBOULDof a microscopic nematode that attacks and kills only snails and slugs – harmless to everything else. Supplied in packets it is mixed with water and applied to borders with a watering can. This can be applied to borders from February to November at six-week intervals and each packet will treat up to 40 square metres of garden for the price of a few tubs of slug pellets. In the meantime it’s worth taking some action to stop the slugs getting at your plants. Irresistible to slugs are shallow containers of beer sunk into the ground, after being lured into the brew they will never get out. Slugs and snails don’t like crawling over coarse materials so this can be used to the gardeners advantage. Make a ring of horticultural grit around the base of plants such as Hostas. This will keep the slugs away from specifi c plants. Also try crushed eggshells although quite a lot are needed, also try sand or wood ash. Removing debris from the garden such as heaps of leaves and shrub prunings, stray stones or timber, will reduce the number of hiding places for the slugs and also persuade them to use any specifi c hiding places created for them where they will be easily found and disposed off. If slugs are a major problem in a garden then it can

be worth growing the tougher plants in the garden borders and the more lush tender ones in containers where it is much harder for them to be attacked. Slugs are mainly active from April to November so at least we do have a rest from them for part of the year!

AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb 18 Sensing that others are talking too freely, you may be tempted to keep some thoughts private during May. You might also be aware there’s real danger you could blow a fuse. A grand marketing plan could have your attention though - especially if the presentation seems to you to be unusually imaginative and quirky. Work could be extra hard and your physical system could be put under duress during the first two weeks of the month. Your schedule could be disrupted too by the needs of an older person by the end of May. Pleasure comes through dealing with people who really seem to know what they’re talking about.PISCES: Feb 19 - Mar 20 Your position within a team may be under scrutiny during May. It’s possible that you’ve been providing back-up support but that someone now needs you to take a different role. You could be tempted by a cash offer. Discussions with a friend or relative could be exasperating. You might need to decide just how much responsibility you’re prepared to take for another person’s financial woes. You might also be concerned about a deal at work by the middle of May. Routine could be disrupted by a friend of someone really close. It’s this that could test your patience and resolve. You could view this as a re-fuelling of your determination tank.ARIES: Mar 21 - Apr 20Passions could be enthused - this could be property-related during the first week of May. Deciding just who you want to share your personal space with could be part of the issue. Keys and passwords seem more important than usual. These next couple of weeks might not be at all easy. Your heart could feel heavy before the month is out. At the same time, you might also realise just how much someone means to you. The fact that they’re part of your life is probably bonus. Working out how to enjoy this might not be so easy - but seems to be something you want to experience.TAURUS: Apr 21 - May 21You could be fed misinformation. You might also be asked to hold a secret that is actually out of date. Confusion about someone’s long term financial planning may be an issue. For you, putting a safety net in place is imperative before the end of May. It’s possible that the other person feels quite differently. They may not understand your anxiety. Financial constraints could leave you feeling as though you’re in a vice. Important decisions may need to be made: how you deal with someone who owes you money and how you pay for something that seems expensive. You might also be privy to a drama concerning family.

GEMINI: May 22 - Jun 22 Work-wise it could be difficult to get going during the beginning of the month. True, you could be multi-tasking and enjoying having lots of different things to occupy your mind. However, you might also know that you won’t be able to keep this pace up. As the month progresses, romantic instincts could be aroused. Focusing on these might not be easy though. Relations with a group of professionals could be strained. You may be faced with a deadline that seems impossible by the end of May. You could discover that you have friends in high places and that your efforts over the last few months might bring rewards you’d never considered.CANCER: Jun 23 - Jul 22 You might be surprised by the level of secrecy the other person requires. A further possibility is arranging a financial safety net. In this, your sixth sense could be working impeccably before the month is out. Family or property pressures could get you down. Dealing with an insurance company might not be as easy you’d like it to be either. At work you might wonder why you’re doing a certain job. In short, pleasures may be few and far between - except for those that involve admiring those who’re really skilled. Be careful of someone who offers a job that seems too good to be true.LEO: Jul 23 - Aug 23 A younger person’s future and finances could be involved during the first week of May. Allowing them the privacy you demand for yourself might not be easy: there may be too many things you need to know. You might also sense that two friends are nudging into one of their regular stand-offs. Concern about an older relative could mount. If not, then you could experience increased concern about an administrative system that’s not up to the job. Either way, you could have more dealings with ‘experts’ by the end of May. Your way with words could catch someone off-guard and their defensive stand could leave you feeling that you need to challenge them further.VIRGO: Aug 24 - Sept 22 Trying to locate the people you feel would have answers to your questions could be taxing. More than once you might feel you’re on a wild-goose chase. You could leave messages galore and still find that others don’t get back to you. This month could bring the first of three tests of your ability to cope under real pressure during the first half of the month. You may be asked to take responsibility for something you know little about. Your understanding of efficient communications, systems and routines could be rigorously tested by the latter half of the month. You may feel the need to put a colleague under similar scrutiny.

LIBRA: Sept 23 - Oct 23 Passions could emerge. It might be wise to be extra careful about what you say. There’s a strong possibility of upsetting someone and having to apologise by the middle of May. It’s very likely that you don’t yet have all the facts. What arrives by mail could prompt an instinctive reaction. It’s possible that it hasn’t been well worded, and that in any case, the situation has changed. Taking things seriously doesn’t mean you can’t derive pleasure from them. You might like to ask an expert for help with a hobby - or you could move a love affair to more permanent status by last week in May. SCORPIO: Oct 24 - Nov 22You might sense that there’s more going on in the background than you know. As a result, your nerves could be over-stretched. Discussions with an expert are likely before the month ends. This could range from anything to do with legal or property matters to last-minute travel arrangements. The only angst is that family and long-standing friends might not be as supportive as you’d like them to be. Anticipate being frowned on - and consider carefully your attitude. Worries about older relatives could grow. Once again, oiling the wheels and ensuring that domestic affairs run smoothly could be challenged by the need for repair to an item that was supposed to stand the test of time.SAGITTARIUS: Nov 23 - Dec 21Pressures come from three directions: first there’s the probability of problems with travel - and increased expense in that area. Secondly there’s worry about neighbours and plans they seem determined to implement. The third problem could be that communications could reach impasse when someone who considers themselves to be an authority hassles you over something you’ve said or written. There’s a chance that you could push yourself too far before the month is out. Others might see you as a special cog in a wheel. Your ability to gather unusual facts and your list of contacts could come in useful.CAPRICORN: Dec 22 - JAN 19Inconsequential chatter could really get on your nerves. There may be issues you want to discuss - but don’t know how to tackle. Plans for a trip or change of scene for this month could interest you though - especially if this involves spending time with someone in the family. Your expertise may be called into question. You might also start to wonder about your long-term prospects. Dealings with people working in further education could come under sharp scrutiny. You might also be asked to help someone younger who’s having difficulty coping with an administrative system.

Spoilers & Rumours… (If you don’t want to know what’s coming up in the latest soaps then close your eyes now)CORRIE: Monday, May 2: Steve’s on edge as he deals with an exasperated Lloyd and the police, who have found his burnt-out cab near Blackpool. Graeme wakes on the sofa and is thrown to find Xin asleep next to him. Mary is spooked when the police find her van intact on Viaduct Street as it wasn’t there last night, so she asks Norris if she can stay at number three a little longer; Gail’s disappointed when Nick gives Cheryl the bar manager’s job but soon finds herself another position; while Frank and Carla work well together.Thursday, May 5: Having been gone all night, Becky finally returns drunk and flies at Tracy, who relishes playing the victim. Norris and Mary have been watching the camper van in shifts, but when they take a break, they’re stunned to discover it’s disappeared again. Audrey struggles to protect Marc’s secret when she and Claudia spot ‘Marcia’ on a night out; Sophie and Sian are enraptured as they hear about James’s voluntary work for the homeless charity; and Roy tries to encourage Sylvia to move out.Friday, May 6: Tracy’s aware she’s annoying Frank and when she admits she still has feelings for Steve, he’s pushed to the limit and suggests they cool things. As she turns it into a big stand-up row, will Frank dump her and what is Tracy’s end game? Kylie’s furious with David for interfering over Max. But the can of worms has been opened and when Gail hears Steve claiming David and Kylie aren’t fit to be parents, she wades in. Her maternal gene kicking in, Gail promises to help them get Max back whatever it takes.EMMERDALE: Monday, May 2: The factory girls tell Lisa that they’ll be there to support her in court tomorrow, while in the pub, Cain upsets Zak when he asserts that Zak should have finished Derek off when he had the chance. Kate agrees to see Nikhil again despite finding him boring, but Gennie is annoyed by her attitude and thinks she should have just been honest; Hazel and Aaron are pleased when Jackson agrees to go on holiday to Whitby with them; and Bob tries to make Jimmy see that he should give Kelly another chance.Wednesday, May 4: Debbie takes to the stand and is floored by the defence barrister’s suggestion that Lisa didn’t tell Zak the truth because sex with Derek was consensual. Called back into court to hear the verdict, Lisa tries to remain strong as the jury find Derek guilty of the other woman’s rape but not of raping Lisa. Charity persuades Chas to go to the cinema with Nikhil, wanting him out of the house so she and Jai can have a romantic night in. Much to Gennie’s dismay, Chas agrees and Nikhil’s surprised when Chas suggests they quit the date and have a night in instead.Thursday, May 5: A humiliated Amy returns to the B&B and starts packing her bags. At the same time, Leyla arrives home and is stunned when David tells her that Amy tried to kiss him. Val asks Victoria if she knows anything and Victoria admits Amy told her David tried to take advantage of her. David can’t believe what is happening as Val starts questioning his story. John is pleased when the supermarket gives him a letter of intent guaranteeing his first order. Hazel insists that Aaron tell her what he’s been secretly organising.

Whitney tells Ryan that her test results are back and she has tested positive for Chlamydia; Lauren and Jack have a heart-to-heart; and Grace isn’t happy about Fatboy and Mercy’s wedding plans, though she concedes that it’s better than Mercy being deported.Thursday, May 5: Ian has a new love interest - Jeanette. Pat confronts Ian about her but Ian claims that he has known her for years. Later, Ian hands a wad of cash to Jeanette and pops out on an errand, leaving her behind at the pub. SCREAM (15) Sidney Prescott, now the author of

a self–help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (played by Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney‘s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger. Starring Courtney Cox and Neve Campbell.2. RIO (U) Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy–adventure centres on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there‘s another – and that it‘s a “she” – he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it‘s far from love at first sight between the domesticated, flight–challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high–flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage and being open to life‘s many wonders. Starring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Leslie Mann.3. YOUR HIGHNESS (15) Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a hero is a good-for-nothing younger brother trying just to stay out of the way of those dragons, evil and trouble in general. As two princes on a daring mission to save their land, they must rescue the heir apparent’s fiancée before their kingdom is destroyed. Starring James Franco and Natalie Portman.4. RED RIDING HOOD (12A) Valerie is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter, but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry. Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie’s older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman.5. HOP (U) Blending state-of-the-art animation with live action, Hop tells the comic tale of Fred, an out-of-work slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world’s worst house guest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up. Starring the voices of Russell Brand and Hugh Laurie.6. WINNIE THE POOH (U) With the charm, wit and whimsy of the original Winnie the Pooh featurettes, this all–new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Kanga, Roo – and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail. Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for Pooh bear who simply set out to find some hunny. Starring the voices of John Cleese and Craig Ferguson.

Out Of This World…It’s Good To Talk...A centuries-old language is at risk of dying out, with just two fluent speakers and they who refuse to speak to each other. Manuel Segovia, 75, and Isidro Velazquez, 69, live just 500 metres apart in the Mexican village of Ayapa, but have not spoken in years. The National Indigenous Language Institute is making a last-ditch attempt to protect the language by setting up lessons where the last two speakers can share their knowledge, however, similar attempts have failed in the past due to lack of interest. Flying Cow... A couple tried to check a dead cow onto a transatlantic flight. The couple in question arrived at New York’s JFK airport with the carcass wrapped up on a trolley and attempted to board a flight to Heathrow airport in London with the dead cow. Unsurprisingly, staff refused to allow the pair to check in their bizarre luggage. A survey by Virgin Atlantic revealed a giant wheel of cheese and cutlery stolen from a previous flight were also among the items brought in to airports. One couple even tried to check in a bag of sand, sea and water to help themselves remember the holiday in Grenada during which they fell in love.Dodge ‘Em... Police officers monitoring CCTV in a Chinese city were stunned to see a man trying to drive two bumper cars along a busy road. Officer Liu Yulin said he thought he was “seeing things” when he saw the man with the fairground cars in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. “I was sweating,” he said. “I saw the man sat in between the two cars with one foot on the accelerator of each.” Zhang, told them he owned the bumper cars and had rented a space at a nearby amusement park but business was slack. He had decided to take the battery-powered bumper cars to a busy pedestrianised area downtown in the hope of attracting brisker trade. However, as it was unclear what the correct punishment should be under Chinese law, he let Zhang off with a verbal caution.Bare All 1... Shoppers turned heads at an Essex shopping centre by turning up wearing only their undies and high heels. The promotion at the Lakeside Shopping Centre, in Thurrock, was staged to launch the centre’s spring fashion range. The first 100 girls who turned up wearing only their underwear and a pair of high heels won a £100 gift card. All entrants had to be over the age of 18 and had to have their photo taken as part of Lakeside’s ‘flash of fashion’. The shopping centre promised entrants the chance to arrive in their underwear and “leave fully clothed in a fabulous new look for the new season”.Pistol Fight... Thousands of Thais and foreign tourists armed with water pistols faced off outside one of Bangkok’s biggest shopping centres for a soaking 10-minute shoot-out to celebrate Thailand’s Songkran Water Festival. The three-day Songkran (meaning entering the new) festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year’s Day. During festivities, people spray water on each other’s faces to symbolise washing away the sins from the old year. The previous largest water fight world record was set in Spain in 2007. And Finally... I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel.

Every year dogs, cats and rabbits in the UK die from preventable infectious diseases. Many owners start off with

good intentions and have their young pet’s fi rst vaccination course for protection. However, for all sorts of reasons, booster vaccinations can lapse and gradually immunity wanes leaving pets at risk from life threatening bacterial and viral diseases.

A nationwide survey of vets shows that based on reports received in the nine months to February 2011 just under 47.4% of vet practices had confi rmed or suspected cases of the killer disease parvovirus during that period. Widespread and often fatal this disease causes severe vomiting and terrible bloody diarrhoea. It is a hardy virus and can survive in the environment for months, even years under the right conditions. Reported cases of

cat fl u were also up a third compared to the previous 9 month period. If the reports are representative it suggests around 6,000 cases of parvovirus and some 33,000 cases of cat fl u are seen by vets across the UK per year. Cat fl u is thought to have affected about 160,000 cats and kittens and many of us will be familiar with the sight of wild rabbits affected with myxomatosis which is usually spread to pet rabbits by external parasites such as fl eas.

Fortunately, May is National Vaccination Month when owners of adult dogs, cats and rabbits can restore their immunity for just the price of a booster. Dogs and cats will need to be older than 18 months and must not have received a vaccination in the last 18 months. Rabbits must be older than 9 months and not have received a vaccination for at least 9 months.
