Potentate’s Message Greetings Nobles! January has been a busy and exciting month at Almas Temple. Your divan has been working hard to build excitement around events, your Recorder has been working hard to bring more clients into our building to generate revenue and you, the nobles, have been at-tending events, having fun and helping Children. Lady Vanessa and I knew that January would be busy but it’s been even busier than I could have imagined.
What have we done this month to Strengthen fun and Fellowship? We started the month with a great installation at Almas followed by attending Installations at Boumi and Kena Shriners. It was also my privilege to install the officers of the NW-BCC Shrine Club and the Almas Yacht Club. We had a great time at the Chinese New Year Parade in Wash-ington! The Mini-Motors, Legion of Honor Checker, Chuckles the Clown and all of our Nobles were well received by the parade attendees. Nearly 30 nobles came to play games and cheer on the teams at our Super Bowl Party. A great time was had by all!
How have we Supported Shriners Hospitals? I had the opportunity to travel to the East West Shrine Game where I presented a check for living expenses from the Q Foundation for Kids to three SHC Tampa patients sponsored by the Almas Bolivia Shrine Club. I was also able to take the three boys to the football game where they had a great time. I was also reminded that you never know when you will run into an Almas Shriner… I met Noble Cliff Cooper for the first time and caught up with my old friend Noble Steven Orr and his Lady Katherine. Thank you to Noble Pig from the NW-BCC Shrine Club for his donation of $255 and to Noble Melvin Harrison for donating his $45 in bartending tips from the Super Bowl party to the Almas Transportation Fund.
What steps are we taking to Solidify our Financial Future? Our recorder has been working closely with our new mar-keting company to develop better marketing materials and strategies to help generate paid bookings of our ballroom and other facilities. Our new branding “Sphinx on K” looks great and is a step in the right direction. In addition we conducted market analysis of similar facilities and determined we could raise our rental rates and still remain highly competitive. We’ve taken important steps to modernize the computer applications we use for client management and bookings enabling us to move away from spreadsheets and calendars to a true Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform. We’re also going to make some changes to our Alibi printing schedule to reduce our costs. Please see the important information on this later in the Alibi.
On the Horizon: At our March business meeting we will vote on important changes to our temple by-laws which were reviewed at our February meeting and laid over per Imperial Code until March.
Membership Party: Rob Heffelfinger, our membership chair is launching a huge event on Friday March 17th; a Saint Patrick’s Day bash at the temple and the first meeting of the Almas Spirits Society, our new Whiskey club. If you haven’t been to Almas in a long time please come by and have some green beer and taste the spirits; all of our nobles are welcome. Even if you are behind on your dues look at our bylaw changes and come see what your Temple is doing and join us for some fun. We sincerely hope to have you come back to active noble status.
The Potentates Ball is April 1st (no joke). Come celebrate Mardi Gras style at this year’s black tie optional gala. The evening will begin with an open bar social hour at 5 PM followed by a plated dinner and dancing to the sounds of Prince Havely and His Royal Highness Band. At 9 PM you’ll want to exchange your jacket and tie for extra Mardi Gras beads and masquerade masks for a Charity After-Party championed by Federal Lodge #1 and Singleton Lodge #7. Come party the night away with the Fellowcraft band and other local opening acts to raise money for the Almas Trans-portation fund.
Finally, it’s time to start planning for the Imperial Session. It will be a big year for Almas as we are hoping to launch two more new Temples from South America. Our Assistant Rabban Frank Ireton is working hard to get us ready to be in the Imperial Parade. Please reach out to Frank and support the planning for Imperial 2017!
Yours in the Faith

Greetings from Samla Temple No 51, Daughters of the Nile. I would like to thank the Almas Alibi for the opportunity given to us each month to share Samla’s news and information. My term as queen is ending and it’s time to pass this duty to a new queen. I will still remain very active as a Junior Past Queen and look forward to offering support and guidance to the new of-ficers and members.
Samla has gained new members this term due to the hard work of our members, officers and Past Queens. Our committees and fund raiser teams had a successful year and should be proud. May we continue to grow and offer support to the children at Shriners Hospitals for Children
in Philadelphia, PA. If anyone is interested in learning more about us or interested in joining our temple, contact me or any member for information. I can be reached at [email protected].
Pr. Royal Diane Logue and Samla Temple, No. 51 invites you to our Open Installation on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 2 pm.

Illustrious Sir Michael has Almas Shriners off to a roaring start this year with a fun time at the Super Bowl Party. If you have missed any of the action check out the Almas Shri-ners webpage and the Almas Shriners Facebook page for photos. As I write this, the Val-entine Day Dance is shaping up to be a gala event this year and I expect to see photos also published on the web and in the Alibi. Plans for the Potentate’s Ball are coming together nicely. Illustrious Sir Michael and First Lady Vanessa have chosen Mardi Gras as the theme for the Ball this year. This year the Ball will be followed by a Charity After Party with music by the band Fellowcraft and will be raising money for the Transportation Fund. The Charity After Party is billed as a separate event for those who wish to only at-tend the party. See the announcement published in this month’s Alibi and on our website.
Never too early to start planning for Imperial Session in Daytona Beach this July. We are expecting some of our European members to join us this year so come along and meet them. Also, Almas is planning on entering the parade and members will be needed for
participation. As Imperial draws nearer plans will be finalized and announced. While thinking of Imperial also think of participation in the Fall MASA meeting in Virginia Beach. Almas always has a presence in Virginia Beach and fields a nice showing for the parade. This year we are working with Kena Shriners Nobles and their ladies to share hospitality and fun times. Come on down meet, parade, and party with us.
Do you have a Shriner hat? Shirt? Jacket? I usually wear my Shriners Hospitals for Children or Shriners hat when out and about. This week while in Tucson we stopped at a grocery store and during checkout the clerk asked me if I worked for Shriners Hospitals. I replied no, but was a Shriner who worked to support the hospitals and their mission. She related a story about her sister’s son who had received extensive treatment at one of the hospitals and thanked me. I always carry some of the Potentate’s pins and gave her a couple for herself and sister. I have had this happen several times that makes the fund-raising and hours spent driving to Philadelphia time well spent. Wear your Shriners hat, shirt or jacket and get some pins to carry with you from Illustrious Sir Michael.
