Archbishop Barsamian gave a sermon on the significance of the fifth-century Battle of Avarayr, which the Armenian Church commemorated on Thursday, February 27. In this issue, we share with you two pictures from our parish archives. These pictures highlight two essential components of stewardship: giving and caring. Our Church did not always look as it does today, of course – it grew with each passing year. Each building, each enhancement, each brick, was built one at a time, thanks to stewards who gave their treasures back to the Church. Along with giving, those who came before us gave their time to take care of our Church. They cleaned the sanctuary, polished each piece of crystal on the chandeliers – and the effect of that service has continued today, to us who have seen that dedication and are inspired to do the same.

At St. James, we have much for which to be thankful. Our parish is vibrant and active, with many events, organizations, and youth programs bringing thousands of parishioners through our

doors annually. We are blessed with many generous individuals, those who give time, treasure, and talent back to our parish and the Armenian Church. We also give thanks to you and all parishioners, whose participation in our community of faith contributes to our vitality.

However with over 2,000 parishioners who call St. James ‘home,’ only 1 in 3 parishioners are members and fewer make an annual pledge. Just imagine what we could accomplish together, for each other and the community at-large if each and every one of us pledged what we are able! It is our dream that 100% of our parishioners make the commitment to become members, and also give what they can to contribute to the Annual Appeal.

Stewardship is a way of life. It is the recognition that God has given us all that we have -even our lives. Nothing

belongs to us. It all belongs to Him. We are but tenants in this world, entrusted with the care of those things God has given us. As stewards, we give them back to their proper Owner.

Stewardship is what you do after you say “I believe.” Making a commitment to be a faithful and wise steward of St. James Church begins by acknowledging that everything we have comes from God. Stewardship takes root in our lives when we offer our gifts to God with generosity and gratitude.

It takes a lot of resources to keep such a large, active parish going. In order to fulfill the ever-changing needs of our parishioners and community, it is vital that we secure the financial health of our church. It is impossible to make true progress and appropriate plans effectively meet the needs of our parishioners in the years to come while operating on unpredictable cash flow.

WE are the stewards of our church.

WE are the ones who must continue to the vision and legacy of the generations who came before us, working tirelessly to be good stewards of our Church.

WE must be the caretakers and supporters of St. James Armenian Church so that it may grow and thrive in Watertown for generations to come.

Please consider donating what you can to our 2014 Annual Appeal. The donation card is enclosed in this issue of the Looys, and can also be found in the Church entrance or Church office. Please feel free to approach Fr. Arakel or any Parish Council members with your questions. Thank you for your generosity, and for being a steward of the Armenian Church in America.

“The Battle of Avarayr changed the course of Armenian history. At a time when Christianity was under great threat in our homeland, St. Vartan and his brave soldiers came forward to defend their faith,” Archbishop Barsamian said. “Today we are fortunate to live in a society where we are free from persecution, but even so our Christian identity is not invulnerable. It is something we must strengthen and safeguard each day, as we strive to follow in the example set for us by Christ.”

During Sunday’s services, Archbishop Barsamian bestowed the rank of acolyte (tbir) to Nareg Kalaydjian, Jivan Purutyan, and Haig Yeterian. Aaron Derderian, Ari Kazanjian, Raffi Kazanjian, William Musserian, James Najarian, and Simon Tacvorian were ordained acolytes and sub-deacons.

“I’m proud of our youth for their dedication and willingness to serve in the Armenian Church,” Fr. Aljalian said. “These young men have been active in our parish for many years, and I look forward to them continuing their service at the altar and expanding their knowledge and experience.”

The Primate also congratulated the newly ordained altar servers and their families. In addition, he expressed his appreciation to members of the ACYOA Juniors, who recently joined the St. James choir and sang the hymns of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday.

We congratulate our youth for their dedication and service to the Armenian Church, and we pray that their faith and commitment continue to grow for years to come.

April 12th was a beautiful day in every sense of the word. The sun was shining (finally!) and the gathering of over 130 women to commemorate Saintly Women’s Day met at St. James Armenian Church. Saint Santoukht was honored on this day - a symbol of Christian faith and courage and an inspiration to the many who followed her and who follow her still. Daughter of the Armenian king, Sanadrouk, the princess chose martyrdom over worldly kingdoms. She was put to death by her father, becoming the first Armenian martyr to be honored and revered as such by the Church.

The women from six New England parishes, St. James, Sts. Vartanantz, Holy Trinity, Holy Translators, Church of Our Savior and Hye Pointe Churches first met for light refreshments before going to church. In church, clergy from all six churches, along with Diocesan Vicar V. Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, participated in the Order of Worship. Rev. Laura Everett, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, delivered the homily stressing the importance of family, respect and humility.

Following the service, attendees participated in a delicious Lenten luncheon prepared by the event committee, chaired by Nancy Kassabian and Gail Boroyan. Gail Talanian O’Reilly, founder of Made in Armenia Direct, spoke with the group on the resilience and perseverance of women (and men) in Armenia in creating handicrafts and making progress towards self-sufficiency. The profits from this day will go to benefit two worthy projects supported by the Women’s Guilds across the Diocese: the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program and the Vanadzor Elderly Project in Armenia.

It was a day of worship, sharing and fellowship; over and over the participants expressed as to what a wonderful, inspirational day it was. We were blessed to have so many women and clergy participating. And the sun was still shining when we left!

How long have you been a parishioner of St. James? We have been parishioners of St. James since 1994. Edrina began Sunday school that year. A foundation was built and has continued to grow until this day.Why did you decide to become a dues paid member? I decided to become a dues paid member so that my children and I would not only strengthen our sense of belonging, but also our sense of responsibility to St James. Membership is a contribution to ensure the continuity of our church. It is a conscious way of saying “I am committed to St. James-this is my church.” In what way do you, or others in your family, share your time, treasure, and talents with the church? My children, Edrina and David both graduated from Sunday school here and were both ACYOA members. Edrina was a teacher in the Sunday Sprouts Program [for children ages 2-5] for several years. It is my hope that they will continue to be involved and serve in whatever capacity they choose in the future. My involvement began with the formation of the New Vision group. Most of the Sunday school parents with children the same ages became involved as well. It was a great chance to meet others who were either new to St. James or reconnecting. Friendships were formed through this group, and we gradually started volunteering to work together at the bazaar, picnic and other church functions.Six years ago I began to serve as a Parish Council member and Women’s Guild member. These experiences have enriched me, given me a greater appreciation of the challenges we face, and shown me the importance of working together. I have also been witness to Fr. Arakel’s unwavering and tireless devotion to St. James.

Why do you believe it’s important for parishioners in our parish family to become members? Membership in a church is not like membership in any other type of organization. In other organizations, they exist to serve the member. In a church, membership gives us the opportunity to serve the church. Although our spiritual commitment is a personal matter, membership gives us the chance to declare our commitment. For me and my children, personally I believe that our sense of belonging to St. James was a result of becoming members. What does St. James mean to you? What keeps you coming back? St. James has come to mean home to me, not only our spiritual home but our family home. Although I did not grow up in Watertown, I have always felt welcome here. I grew up in Connecticut and my family attended St. George’s church in Hartford. My father was very involved in church life and instilled me a sense of responsibility and pride in being Armenian. My involvement in St. James has given me a sense of honoring his memory and love of the Armenian Church.St. James means a connection to faith, heritage, family, friendships. What keeps me coming back is the sense of devotion we share not only with our church but to each other. What keeps me coming back is the also the need we have to keep St. James vibrant for our children. What has it offered you and your children?St. James has offered my children a place where they could be Armenian without having to explain that. It has offered them a unique place where being Armenian was complete in terms of faith, culture, tradition and our rich heritage. Through involvement in St. James, I have been blessed with the bond of friendships unlike any other. My children and I are very proud to call St. James our church, our home and our familyWhat is your favorite memory at St. James? There are so many! When Edrina was involved in ACYOA, we have so many fond memories of Sports Weekends. David’s last year of Sunday school was taught by Yn. Natasha, and the graduation was very special because of her love and support of each of those students.Another favorite memory is the year that Parish Council was asked to chair the bazaar. It was a challenge for us but we came together, worked together and felt good about our accomplishment at the end. Since then, every year each bazaar provides us with great memories.

How long have you been parishioners of St. James? We have been parishioners of St. James since 1991.Why did you decide to become a dues paid member?Being a dues paid member is just what it implies. We feel it comes with being a member of a community or organization. A church needs its parishioners’ support in order to continue its mission for the future of our children, and the church itself. Different organizations within St. James and fundraisers help in that support as well, but we feel that family support is very important. We think of all that the church has given our family and we wouldn’t think of not making a financial contribution as a dues paid member. In what way do you, or others in your family, share your time, treasure, and talents with the church? We are an active family at St. James and really enjoy the time there. Steve is a member of Men’s Club, and enjoys helping out at Hye Cafe with Laura. We like volunteering at the bazaar, the Church picnic, making breakfast for our ACYOA Juniors at Sports Weekend on Monday before departure, and helping out when asked. Laura has been active with the auditing committee, is a member of Women’s Guild and our children Ani and Aaron have gone through the Sunday School program and contributed in their own ways. Aaron enjoys ACYOA Seniors and just recently was elevated to Sub-Deacon.Why do you believe it’s important for parishioners in our parish family to become members? We believe it is important because it shows a commitment to the Church and a community that has gives so much to its members. Let’s face it, it does take money to pay bills and it is the responsibility of the members to see that through.

The Church is a home for all of its member families it is important for all parishioners to show their support. What does St. James mean to you? What keeps you coming back?St. James is a place for worship and to thank the Lord for what we have. St. James is also a place of comfort when we attend various functions and programs. It is a second home. We enjoy seeing our friends and spending time spiritually, socially and working together towards a common vision. What has it offered you and your children?St. James offers our family a place to come and worship. It has given our children a spiritual education through the Sunday School program and the leadership of Fr. Arakel and Yn. Natasha. St James has offered us the opportunity to meet many wonderful people and Laura enjoys learning how to make many Armenian foods from her friends at St. James. The youth programs have been very beneficial and have created many friendships that will last for a lifetime for our children. What is your favorite memory at St. James?Steve grew up in the Worcester Church and has memories of St. James from as far back as the “ACYOA Days” having attended many Sports weekends and other functions at the Church throughout the years. We feel that all of the nice people we have met, all of the friends we have made and all of the time that we spend at the church create all great memories that will last forever.

  • A long standing tradition of St. James’ fourth grade Sunday school class is learning how to make Nushkhar. On Sunday, April 6th, Fr. Arakel and Mrs. Leslie Cristello conducted a class on Nushkar, the communion wafer that is blessed and used during Holy Communion.

The students had hands on opportunity to form the wafer on wooden molds. This task requires patience and diligence, so the print of the crucifix or the “khatch” is not lost in the

cooking process. Needless to say, the students in Ms. Linda Sahagian and Ms. Rebecca Minasian’s fourth grade mastered the art. The prepared Nushkar were taken to church, where Fr. Arakel blessed them and gave them back to the students to take home.

Our sincere thanks to Fr. Arakel and Leslie for giving our students this opportunity, and our sincere thanks to the students who have promised to return in the future as Mas/Nushkar makers for St. James.

Each year before the start of Great Lent, the Sunday School and the St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian School come together to plan a day of “good living”. This year, unlike last year, the snows stayed away and Poon Paregentan came alive!

Friends and family came together to enjoy a wonderful luncheon and the entertainment of Ventriloquist Dana Perkins.

Mr. Perkins arrived with many of his puppets and entertained all ages with his faith-focused show, including: Bible stories including Jonah and the Whale; spiritual truths, accepting who you are, being accepting of others, and lots of humor, even giving a tutorial on putting together and bringing a puppet to life! Thank you to all who attended.

  • Sunday, April 6 was the Sunday school’s Service Sunday, and what a service it was! With the littlest children from Sunday Sprouts to the young adults in the graduating class, all hands were on deck and Keljik Hall was alive with love and energy! Seventy-two Easter baskets were assembled by students from Sunday Sprouts through grade 3. Filled with toys donated by the ACYOA and treats donated by parents, the festive baskets were delivered to the St. Vincent

dePaul Food Pantry located at St. Patrick’s Church for distribution to children who are less fortunate.

While the youngsters where assembling the baskets in the middle of the hall, the older grades were simultaneously preparing doations to benefit Fr. Bill’s Homeless Shelter and MainSpring in Quincy, MA, including: packaging shampoo in personal use containers, cutting/packaging soap in personal use sizes, washing fruit

for boxed lunches, assembling “Welcome Home” Kitchen totes, and preparing and packing boxed lunches.

It sounds like a lot going on, and it was, however we have to be so proud of our students, working together, working for a common goal, working to help others.

My sincere thanks to our staff, our students and their families and to the parishioners to who gave to make this day of giving and service happen.

On March 9th, the St. James Sunday School graduating class held a student/faculty volleyball game to collect cereal and raise money for the Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter where they would be serving brunch on March 23rd. Pine Street Inn has grown into New England’s largest resource for homeless adults, serving over 1,600 individuals a day. From emergency services, needs assessment and case management, to job training and placement in permanent supportive

housing, it provides all remedies to end the experience of homelessness. That day, students were able to collect about 80 boxes of cereal, as well as $300 to bring to shelter.

Many students initially expressed concerns about serving at a homeless shelter. For some, not only would this be their first time confronting the homeless, it would be their first time participating in service. On the 23rd, we traveled to Pine Street Inn with the donation. The students and I put on

our hairnets and aprons and served brunch to men and women at the shelter. As a teacher, I was able to watch my students grow in their faith right in front of my eyes. The experience that we had as a class at the Pine Street Inn was unforgettable and it would not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of the members of St. James. Thank you!

he month of February was busy for the students and staff, as we prepared for our annual Vartanantz celebration on February 23rd. Jacob Naroian read an excerpt from St. Vartan’s speech addressed to his compatriots before the battle of Avarayr, followed by readings about the historical significance of Vartanantz by Katya Maserejian, Adrena Seferian and Ara Naroian. Various grades also recited poems and sang songs dedicated to St. Vartan. The program ended with a patriotic dance performed by the entire student body. The day’s luncheon that consisted of a traditional harissa meal, and other delicacies were prepared by the parents and friends of Armenian

school. Our school board would like to thank you all for your attendance to support our school and students.

The following weeks were focused on our Easter celebrations. It is a tradition in our church for our students to read from the Scriptures before Divine Liturgy on Easter Eve. The students diligently prepared for this event, and contributed beautifully to the service. We now are preparing for the year end exams and program, and thank you all for attending our commencement exercises on May 19th –stay tuned for updates and pictures from this event in the next issue!

St. James Observes the Final Days of Christ’s Earthly Ministry

  • sPrING News FroM the AcyoALast month, a group of 17 ACYOA Juniors traveled to New Hampshire to participate in the New England Regional Retreat, led by Jennifer Morris, Director of the Diocesan Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Close to 50 teens from throughout New England participated in the retreat, which focused on the theme “Made In His Image,” highlighting how God made each one of us in His image,

and how we can work to discover that through our daily lives. St. James Youth Minister Maria Derderian led a session on different ways to cope with stress. During the closing session, four graduating seniors reflected on past retreats, including three St. James members; Armen Andonian, Alex Bresnee, Arlin Cimen, and Tania Melkonian.

Continuing their focus on mentoring younger members in the parish, members of the ACYOA Seniors gave their time and served as retreat chaperones: Karina Bekelian, Shane Madden, and Peter Oundjian. They participated in discussions and sessions throughout the weekend, and helped the ACYOA Juniors have a wonderful experience at our annual retreat.

Each year, Palm Sunday brings with it the celebration of ACYOA Day throughout the Diocese. This year, over 250 parishioners attended the banquet, jointly hosted by the ACYOA Juniors and Seniors. ACYOA members gathered to serve the meal and serve as hosts for the day. During the banquet, ACYOA members gave reflections on their experience within the ACYOA and various Diocesan programs, including St. Vartan Camp. Ani Grigorian, Vice-Chair of the ACYOA Central Council, visited St. James and was the Keynote Speaker of the day, updating the parish on the recent activities of the ACYOA Central Council. Tania Melkonian, ACYOA Juniors member, provided a reflection on her experience at St. Vartan Camp. “Without the distraction of technology, camp-goers are essentially forced to truly get to know one another and pay full attention to their surroundings. That push to break social ground is why the friends I’ve made through my years at SVC are unquestionably the closest friends I have. Throughout the session I rekindle old relationships, while simultaneously creating ties with new people.” Talar Kaya, ACYOA Juniors member, provided a reflection on her experience. “St. James and the ACYOA are where I go to for support, for advice, and for comfort. I truly can’t imagine how different my life would have been had I never taken that first step in eighth grade to fill out a registration form and join. St. James has given me so much relief when I needed it, and so much love when I wanted it. The bonds I

have formed with the people in this organization are so strong and genuine that neither time nor distance will break them. As a group, we have all grown together not only physically through the years, but also spiritually and mentally. I know that no matter where I end up going to school in the fall, or wherever I travel or how far I go in my life, I can always find myself back here, at my church, at my home.”Thank you to all who attended the ACYOA Day banquet, and continue to support our youth!

On Sunday, April 27, parishioners and friends gathered for a special fellowship hour honoring a longtime member of the St. James family, Jean LaForest Cherestal, custodian and true caretaker of our parish home for over 20 years. A kind, gentle soul, LaForest has lovingly served St. James for decades, and has touched many of us with his service, dedication, and warm spirit.

A lavish reception was organized by the Parish Council, with all organizations contributing in appreciation for all LaForest has done throughout the years. A short

program followed, where Fr. Arakel offered memories and kind words for LaForest, stressing how he has truly become a member of our St. James family. A presentation of gifts followed, after which LaForest eloquently spoke about his time at St. James, offering words of gratitude for his first job (and, as he proudly stated, his last job) in the United States.

LaForest will truly be missed! We pray for his good health and many years as he moves to Washington DC to be with his family, and we hope that he is able to visit and join us as our guest at events in the future.

easter Yughakin offeringIt is customary in the Armenian Church to provide “Yughakin” especially around the feasts of Christmas and Easter. This practice dates as far back as the time of Moses in the Old Testament.

Yughakin in Armenian means “price of oil” – “Yugh” meaning oil and “kin” meaning price. Each local church community would

donate money specially earmarked towards the purchase of oil, which hin return would keep the lanterns burning and ultimately the doors open of the church.

With gratitude to those who made donations to St. James during the Easter season.

The St. James Perpetual Memorial is located in the foyer of the Church on both sides of the entrance to the sanctuary. The archway and modules of the Memorial Plaques were installed in 1991. The archway depicts symbols of the Armenian Church, with the name of our church, St. James Armenian Apostolic Church, at the top of the door. Three sets of wooden modules that hold the Memorial Plaques are on either side of the door. They are made of red oak and enhance and complement the interior of the church sanctuary.

Each Memorial Plaque is 2” x 10”in size. Each plaque bears the name of the departed loved one being memorialized in both Armenian and English, and also bears an inscription of years of birth and passing. Plaques are installed on the Perpetual Memorial at the requested area. Only one person may be remembered on each plaque.

The contribution for each Memorial Plaque is $1,000. The majority of this donation is placed in the St. James Permanent Fund, where it will generate continuing income for our

parish. Families or individuals wanting to reserve Memorial Plaques in advance may do so, and may also select the area of the Perpetual Memorial on which their plaque(s) will be placed, by making full payment in advance.

The Perpetual Memorial is a way to honor our departed loved ones and to remember them as we enter our church sanctuary to worship. For more information, please contact Haig Deranian the Memorial Plaque Chairman at (617) 489-9465 or the church office at (617) 923-8860.

Tuesday night BINGO is a decades old tradition at St. James, with dedicated volunteers lovingly giving their time each week for the good of our parish! Since its inception in the 1970s, Bingo has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to help offset operating expenses at St. James.

BINGO is crucial to the financial viability and security of St. James. BINGO accounts for 15% of our total income to the church, putting over $100,000 a year into the parish budget.

Volunteers help on the floor, help acknowledge winners, call back numbers, and assist in other ways, as needed. The time commitment is flexible: Tuesday evening, a minimum of two hours. Once a month...every week… We welcome your involvement! It’s easy and fun! The only requirements are you must be 18 or older, have a friendly smile and love to welcome people. For more information, please call the church office or e-mail [email protected].

On Sunday, December 15th, on a snowy afternoon, St. James observed its 82nd Anniversary Name Day Celebration. His Eminence Abp. Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, presided over the day’s events. Our pastor, Fr. Arakel, celebrated the Divine Liturgy, during which Archbishop Barsamian ordained subdeacon Shant Broukian to the diaconate. Also taking part in the service were the Very Rev. Fr. Krikor Maksoudian, Rev. Fr. Arsen Barsamian, and Rev. Fr. Dajad Davidian. Following Divine Liturgy, a banquet was held to celebrate the Feast of St. James the Bishop of Nisibis.

Two longtime parishioners, Haig Krekor Deranian and Charles Shahe Guleserian, were presented with the “Parishioner of the Year” award. Despite a snowstorm the night before, the community gathered to congratulate the honorees, who have lovingly served our parish and Diocese for more than 30 years.

On December 15, as we celebrated our parish Name Day, we were also proud to witness an ordination in our parish. During Divine Liturgy, Abp. Khajag Barsamian ordained Subdeacon Shant Broukian to the order of the Diaconate. Dn. Shant has grown up at St. James, and has served our parish in various capacities. He is currently fulfi lling his Residency in Emergency Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. We congratulate Dn. Shant on his ordination, and pray for his continued service to the Lord and the Armenian Church.

    Looys Newsletter FALL 2013ԱՇՈՒՆ 2013

Over 80 years ago, previous generations of our families came to this country, escaping dire hardships and seeking a better life. They made it their priority to create a church around which they centered their lives, working tirelessly and off ering all they had to build this church during the Great Depression. In those days, this church was the light, the hope, the promise of blessings to come. Their legacy continues today.

Throughout the years, St. James has been the foundation that off ered hope, gave families strength, blessed children, and consecrated marriages. Our founders came to St. James for our Lord’s blessing, and for love, comfort and fellowship. They all paved the way for us to come together and worship at St. James.

Because of this vision and commitment, St. James is here for us today.

Now is our time to continue this legacy, have the same vision to create our own legacy, and ensure the future of St. James for generations to come.

We often say that Watertown is the center of the Armenian community. So often I hear people say – with great honor:

“St. James is my church. It has given me so much.”“My kids were baptized in this church.”“My grandparents helped build this church.”“I was married at this church.”“I was an ACYOA member” or “I graduated from Sunday School.”

This pride is not easy to come by. St. James is a faith community that strives to bring parishioners closer to God through the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and seeks to propagate our Armenian culture, language and history. We are blessed with loving parishioners, a long and beautiful history, and a vibrant parish life.

With all that – why do we care about or keep mentioning membership?

For everyone who asks me “why should I be a member?” I ask “Why not?”

We become a part of a family when we are born, but our relationship with our family continues throughout our life. We take from our family and we give to our family.

The Pastor, Parish Council, Diocesan Delegates, and all parishioners of St. James Church extend their sincere and heartfelt condolences to Fr. Arsen, Lucy, Steven, Raffi, and their families and loved ones. Yn. Varteni’s passing is a great loss to our parish, and we will always treasure her legacy and our memories with her. She was a model of kindness, generosity, and faith. Wherever life took her, she touched the lives of the people around her with compassion and friendship. On Sunday, December 16, St. James held its 81st Anniversary Name Day Celebration. His Eminence Abp. Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, presided over the day’s events.

On this occasion, St. James honored two long-time parishioners Edward Brewster and Karen Dederyan as the 2012 Parishioners of the Year. Edward and Karen have dedicated their services to our parish and Diocese for more than 30 years. Both have served as Sunday School teachers and Diocesan delegates, in addition to taking up other roles at the local and Diocesan levels.

Edward, who was married at St. James and went on to teach Sunday School for 39 years, has also served on the Parish Council and Diocesan Council. Not Armenian by birth, he said he has
