The medallists are Alaska Hilton - vocalist and dancer, Anastasia Scholtz - vocalist and dancer, Bronwyn van Wyk - dancer, Erich Viviers - vocalist, Fransune de Toit - dancer, Hanna de Jager - dancer, Kelsey Booysen - dancer, Krystle Temmerman - vocalist (coach), Lana van der Walt - dancer, Minette Landman - dancer (coach) and Surani Aveling Slabbert - dancer. They competed against 1 540 competitors throughout Africa and also won silver and bronze awards. To top this, vocal coach, Krystle Temmerman is the overall winner in the senior vocalists category and also won best entertainer in this category. Dance coach Minette Landman secured a third place in the special awards ceremony. “We have so much talent in SA, especially in the 15 to 17 year vocal category. My goal was just to get gold, not all gold medallists qualify for the international competition and I am thrilled with the results,” Temmerman said. Temmerman qualified in January and the group now has two months to prepare and raise funds for New York where they will perform for the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Juliard School of Arts, the New York film academy, BMG and Sony. “Last year, seven models from South Africa were scouted and signed through Talent Africa,” said Temmerman. Dance coach, Minette Landman said that they had the time of their lives in Roodepoort Johannesburg. “Due to the lack of competitions that provide a platform for performing arts, we are truly grateful for Talent Africa that brought to us what we so desperately needed in KZN.” “We are pleased and humbled that all of Rhythmic Dance Studio’s Talent Africa competitors are through to the next round, where we won't only be representing KZN but the whole of South Africa in New York City,” said Landman. Landman expressed her sincere thanks to Wendy Reinhardt for all her support and additional training for the dancers. Amanzimtoti can truly be proud at the level of talent from our midst and through the next couple of weeks, they will need our support and financial backing to assist them to represent us on the world stage. Darlene’s pub is hosting a congratulatory party for Krystle Temmerman at 2pm on Saturday. All are welcome to join the bring and braai. Temmerman will perform at the event. Beach showers a disgrace

AS a ratepayer who swimsatWinklespruitregularly,Iwould like to say that the

public showers are adisgrace. The inside walls arepeeling and mouldy, the floor ofthe shower is disgusting and theshower drains are often cloggedIwould hate to hearwhat people

who come here on holiday thinkof the state of the showers theyhave to use. These showersshould be demolished and nicefreestanding showers like theones at Baggies beach should beerected

FORD has unveiled its updated Rangerbakkie in Thailand and its sporting designtweaks throughout, improved engines andthe automaker’s latest technologies.

The new Ranger will be launched inSouth Africa in the fourth quarter of 2015.Specification and prices will be confirmedcloser to launch.

At the front, it has a new trapezoidalgrille, new diod headlights, tweakedbumper and bonnet.

The Ranger can wade through 800mmof water, has 230mm ground clearance,28degree approach and 25degreedeparture angles.

For lowspeed torque or additionaldownhill braking drivers can engage thelowrange 4x4 and activate the electronic

rear differential. The Ranger has a towingcapability of up to 3500kg.

Driving assistance technologies:• Lanekeeping alert helps prevent the

driver from unintentionally drifting out ofa lane when driving at highspeeds.

• Adaptive cruise control makes use ofradar sensors to maintain both a presetspeed as well as a preset distance from thevehicle ahead. When the system detects avehicle ahead, it decelerates automatically to maintain a safe distance.

• Forward alert Gives drivers a visualand audible warning when the gap to avehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The system also charges the brakes.

• Park assist uses sensors to detectobstacles and provide audible warningswhen the vehicle approaches obstructionsat low speeds.

• Tye pressure monitor alerting driverswhen tyre pressure is too low

• Electronic stability programme withrollover mitigation and trailer sway

• Driver impairment monitor uses acamera and onboard sensors to detect if

the driver is drowsy. If the system noticessigns such as drifting on the road andsudden corrective steering inputs, thesystem warns the driver with signals.

In markets where it is available,Emergency Assistance uses a Bluetoothpaired and connected phone to call localemergency services after a serious collision.

• Adaptive load control adjusts the

electronic stability control based on vehicle load

The new Ranger is equipped with hillassist, hilldescent control and emergencybrake assistance.

Powering the new ranger is choice offour engines (three diesel, one petrol) eachmated to either a sixspeed manual or autoand with stop/start fuelsaving.

The 3.2litre Duratorq fivecylinder

TDCi diesel has updated exhaust gasrecirculation to improve fuel efficiency,Ford says, by as much as 18%. The 3.2litrediesel is capable of 147kW/470Nm. The2.2litre fourcylinder diesel will be offered, depending on the market, in either118kW/385Nm guise or 96kW variant.

The new Ranger will be available withFord’s 2.5litre Duratec petrol capable of122kW/225Nm of torque.

Ford says its new Ranger has “advanced sounddeadening materials” forimproved insulation and cabinnoise reduction. The new Ranger will be equippedwith Sync 2, the latest generation of Ford’sincar connectivity. It allows drivers to usevoice commands, such as “temperature 20degrees”, “play AC/DC” or “I’m hungry” tocontrol the aircon, entertainment systemand satnav.

The new bakkie also sports a 24Vsocket.

The 2015 Ford Ranger will be built atthe automaker’s Silverton assembly plantnear Pretoria for distribution in Africa andEurope. Wheels24.

Ocean challengeon the cardsON Saturday 16 May at 6.30am, about 50swimmers will battle it out betweenDurban’s North Beach and Vetch’s Reefduring the fivekilometre Four ElementsOcean Challenge, now in its second year.Durban Lifesaving Club is the venue for registration and prizegiving.

This is not only about who has theslickest strokes in the water it’s aboutyouth development and creatingawareness for a great cause as well.

“The swim is not only physicallychallenging, but aims to challengepeople's perceptions of the ocean,” saidthe founder of Four Elements Conversation, Olivia Taylor (18).

“The swim primarily aims to createawareness about ocean degradation andto fund an environmental scholarshipcamp at the end of the year whencandidates apply and get chosen, based onvarious criteria including passion andpotential.”

Scheduled to take place in December, the awardees will be taught to beindependent young environmental

entrepreneurs during a fourdayadventure. It forms an integral part ofteenager Taylor’s goal to remind youngpeople that passion can lead to positivechange.

“Youth have the most incredible ability

to look past possible downfalls, allowingbrave ideas to be formed, which leads toaction and then to success. The secret islearning how to initiate change and thento remain optimistic when your confidencewavers,” she said.

All the action at the Ocean Challengewon't be reserved exclusively for theamphibious types, though. Nonswimmers can show their support for the preservation of the oceans by participating in awalk on the beach, in time with theswimmers, while doing a beach cleanup.TheseeffortsarebeingcoordinatedbytheDurban Girls’ College Environment Club.

There's also a special treat in store onthe day for children from LIV Village, aVerulambased orphanage. Four ElementsConservation will be facilitating a snorkelswim hosted by the I Am Water OceanConservation Trust on Vetch’s Reef forthese children.
