Chung Shan Medical University

History

Due to the shortage of dentists in post war era in Taiwan, Dr. Ju-Chuan

Chou founded Chung Shan Dental Junior College, antecedent of Chung Shan

Medical University, in 1960 with the purpose of training dentists. The school

was named after Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, alias Chung-Shan, in recognition of his

patriotism. The demand for the institute to be elevated to the college level was

growing with the time. After much effort and program enforcement, in 1977,

our school was granted by the Ministry of Education to advance to Chung Shan

Medical and Dental College. Yet, we kept progressing and expanding. In 2001,

the institute was reorganized as Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU).

For the past 50 years, Chung Shan has educated numerous outstanding

graduates. They devoted mostly to the medical care for societies all over the

world. Many of our alumni also played vital roles in various leadership, like the

Director of Department of Health in Executive Yuan, the Mayor of Kaohsiung

City, key cabinet members, Members of Parliament, and chairs in the related

fields of medicine and dentistry. Nowadays CSMU still dedicates to nurturing

future doctors and taking its place in contributing to community.

Location

Chung Shan Medical University, CSMU, is located at Taichung City, the

third largest city in Taiwan. On the central of Taiwan, Taichung city boasts not

only its accessibility to most of tourist sites on the island, but is also famous for

arts, culture and beautiful scenery. There are lots of cultural and arts events

scheduled throughout whole year, including the most famous Taichung Jazz

Festival where you can enjoy jazz music performed by both local and

international artists. When it comes to entertainment, Feng-jia night market is

the favorite destination for the locals and tourists as well. You can shop for all

kinds of things from clothing to jewelry while trying out every famous

Taiwanese snack. To escape from the hustling city, there are various options for

you to enjoy the great nature with Gaomei wetland, Sun Moon lake, Houli

forest, etc. all within short distance.

Rainbow Village

It may be hard to imagine that these colorful and

bright paintings all over the neighborhood are

painted by a veteran, Mr. Huang. At the age of

91, Huang says he won’t stop painting and will

continue to awe people with his playful and fun

work.

National Taichung Theater

National Taichung Theater, also known as

the hardest building to build, is designed

by Japanese architect, Toyo Ito and is

inspired by the concept of sound cave.

The Luce Chapel

Lying on campus of Tunghai

University, the Luce chapel

is co-designed by the

well-known architect, leoh

Ming Pei, and is famous for

its mixed style of modernism

and Chinese style.

Spicy Hot Pot

With tons of hot pot restaurant all over the

island, Taiwan is undoubtedly the

kingdom of hot pot. Make sure to try

Taichung’s most famous spicy hot pot

when you visit here. Taichung Weirdo House

The upside down serrated house

draws people from all over the

island to witness its strange

design.

Lukang Longshan Temple

Lukang Longshan Temple is the oldest

among five Longshan Temples on the island.

Built over 200 years ago, it still welcomes

pilgrims from the locals to tourists all over

the world.

Features

Currently, CSMU consists of five colleges, which are College of Medicine,

College of Oral Medicine, College of Medical Sciences and Technology,

College of Health Care and Management and College of Medical Humanities

and Social Sciences. Compared to other medical colleges in Taiwan, CSMU

makes more efforts to enhance students’ sense of humanities and social

responsibilities. In addition, CSMU offers lots of opportunities to learn from

clinical experiences for Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, CSMUH, is

just beside campus. What’s more, CSMU is known for its achievement in

nuclear medicine, providing students having interests in related fields chances

to further studies.

Aside from programs of academic exchange, there are also many fun

activities to do on campus. From learning how to play traditional Chinese

instruments to getting a glimpse of Chinese acupuncture and Chinese herbs, you

can have fun at leisure while attending various club.
