DERBY SUMMER BEER FEST
Derby Beer Festivals continue to be a big success with over 10K visitors attending the summer festival. There were more than 200 draught ales on offer from brewers across Derbyshire and the UK.

Derby was also delighted to welcome The National Winter Ales Festival to Derby Roundhouse in February 2014. The event attracted over 13.5k visitors, a record number for the winter festival.

CYCLING AT DERBY ARENA
Derby is delighted to announce the opening of the Derby Arena, a sporting facility which includes the Derby Velodrome, a 250m indoor cycle track. The new venue can also be used for cultural events, exhibitions, product launches and conference and will be able to accommodate up to 5k people at events.

Derby is delighted to host a great choice of festivals, many of them ‘home grown’ in the city. Highlights include the FORMAT International Photography Festival and the Derby Film Festival, Derby Comedy Festival, Derby Festé and Derby Folk Festival.

Our website is constantly evolving to showcase everything that the city has to offer visitors. A number of campaigns have been developed to encourage overnight stays including accommodation offers during major events. In 2014, the site showed an increase of 26% in visitor numbers compared to the previous year.
We have also introduced Blogs to showcase great Derby experiences and attractions, which are proving very popular.

Our Twitter account (@VisitDerby) makes anywhere up to 42,000 impressions per month. We’ve doubled our Twitter following to 3,726 in just over a year.
Our other accounts include @derbybeer and @cyclingderby. We use these accounts to target people with an interest in these specific areas. This has proved a very popular approach.

THE OLD BELL HOTEL
The Old Bell Hotel was built in 1650 and is one of Derby’s best loved buildings. In 2014 it has been lovingly restored into a traditional public house serving real ale in the fabulous Tudor Bar and hosting events in the Regency Ballroom. It is said to be haunted and has featured on Sky TV’s ‘Most Haunted’ with regular ghost walks.

MAKERS FAIRS AT DERBY SILK MILL
Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, it’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. The Faire started in the USA 8 years ago and this was the 3rd Derby Maker Faire staged in the amazingly appropriate building, the Derby Silk Mill – the site of the World’s First Factor.

JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY: BATH AND BEYOND EXHIBITION
MAY TO SEPT 2014
The Derby Museum and Art Gallery is home to the world’s largest collection of the work of Internationally renowned Derby artist, Joseph Wright. The ‘Bath and Beyond’ exhibition was produced in partnership with The Holburne Museum, Bath. Lenders include the National Gallery, Tate Britain, the British Museum, the Walker Art Gallery and the Fitzwilliam Museum. We look forward to more exhibitions featuring our famous artist in 2015/16 with the ‘Grand Tour’, a programme of activity that see’s contemporary artists revisiting the influences of heritage collections.

RENOVATION OF THE MAGISTRATES COURT
A £4 million refurbishment of Derby’s Former magistrates’ Court has opened up 27,000 sq feet of office space, one third of it will be used by the local studies library. The building now called Riverside Chambers is located on the banks of the River Derwent and also houses Bean Café and Hide Burger Bar.

DERBY’S SILK MILL
Derby Museums Trust have re-submitted a £10.5 million bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to help pay for the creation of a new visitor experience at Derby’s historic Silk Mill. The aim is to turn the building into a major museum attraction that will showcase Derby’s illustrious industrial history together with our innovative present and future.

DERBY BOOK FESTIVAL

A highlight of the Festival will be the author of War Horse and Private Peaceful, Michael Morpurgo, who will give a performance of Only Remembered: songs, stories and poetry from WW1.

Established in 2004, FORMAT International Photography Festival presents a selection of the best of international photography in a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. It is one of the UK’s leading international contemporary festivals of photography and related media. FORMAT organises a year round programme of international commissions, open calls, residencies, conferences and collaborations in the UK and Internationally. The 2013 festival welcomed over 100,000 visitors from all over the world.

EDUCATION AND BUSINESS BROKERAGE PROJECT
Derby City Council has recruited a new team to form the Education and Business Brokerage Project.
This exciting new initiative aims to support young people to gain the skills, knowledge and attitude required by the local economy. The programmes also help young people to gain confidence, self-esteem and real industry experience.
For example, in 2015, business representatives from across the public and private sectors have volunteered their time to support 1500 school pupils (aged 15-16 years old) to practice and develop their interview skills.
Other projects include piloting new CV Writing and Careers Support workshops, to be delivered by local employers, to help young people develop their employability skills and enhance their career aspirations.

DERBY COACHING FOR SUCCESS
The Derby Coaching for Success project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, has enrolled 240 businesses onto coaching support since it began in October 2013.
Over 50 businesses have received more than 12 hours support and 42 new jobs have been created. The project provides subsidised business coaching to help companies achieve growth.

DARLEY ABBEY MILLS The Darley Abbey Mills complex is located within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and includes many Grade 1 and 2 listed buildings, some of which were among the first factories in the world. 60 businesses currently operate from the mill complex. The owners of the buildings have secured planning permission to convert Long Mill and West Mill into offices and an event space, primarily for weddings. Works are expected to take place during the summer of 2015 with the potential for up to 100 new jobs. More information about the mills can be found at www.darleyabbeymills.com
