Robinson Keynotes Honors' Day Observance"Education is a process, not a

destination, said Prezell R. Robinson, keynote speaker at Albany State College's annual Honor's Day Convocation. "We must move away from ethics of alibias to ethics of performance."

Robinson, who is president of Raleigh, N.C.'s Saint Augustine's College, spoke before a Sanford Gymnasium crowd on May 2nd which paid tribute to more than 200 students who had excelled in academics at the College during the current school year. He spoke on the topic, which was also the theme of the program, "Academics — Still the No. 1 Dimension."

"Less than a decade ago," Robinson stated, "we Americans

were faced with many victories. Civil rights acts had been passed and our economy was swinging in high gear. Today, it has been said that we will be in an inflationary period for the next 10 years.

"One responsibility our young scholars have," he added, "is to help wrestle those problems and to help come up with solutions to them. The extent to which we all work together will affect our whole country."

"I have great faith in the ingenuity of our young people," Robinson concluded. "Our future will depend on bright young scholars, like those at Albany State."

Among the top award recipients

were sophomores Dorothy Boges and Larry Wert, who tied for highest ranking ASC student of the 1979-80 school year. Terrence Frost was awarded honors for highest ranking freshman, Boges and Wert for highest ranking sophomores, Linda Jacobs for highest ranking junior and Julia Wynn for highest ranking senior. The class of 1980 (seniors) was also recognized as the highest ranking class at the College.

Two faculty members also received distinguished awards. Alsylvia Smith, a modern language professor, received the Teacher-of- the-Year Award, an award

"Learning is never over, it has no end. You must continue to expose yourself to much of what life has to offer," a Miller Brewery official said in his challenge to 68 honor students recognized at the Division of Businesses' fourth annual Honors Banquet.

With these word, Washington Johnson, Packaging Maintenance Superintendent at Miller Brewing Company's Albany brewery, challenged them to approach learning as a lifelong quest.

opportunities following college, Johnson said, "when you set out to find a job, you must become a salesman."

"You must sell yourself and your ability to an employer. To do this, you know (1) what you have that would be useful to an employer; (2) why an employer might be able to use your knowledge and skills; and (3) how to show an employer what you have to offer."

THE JONES CLAN (1960-1979) left to right, are: Major (1972-76), Charles (1975-79), Oliver (1961-65), Melvin (1964-68), Caldwell (1969-73), and Wilbert (1965-69).

1979-80 marked the first year since 1960 — a span of nearly twenty years — that a Jones brother from the Arkansas Joneses was not a member of the Rams' basketball squad.

In that span, dating back to the arrival of Bob Rainey as the Rams' basketball coach, six of the Jones boys have worn the Rams' blue and gold in intercollegiate basketball competition. Their names dominate the College's career statistical

category. Remarkably, the five all-time rebounders at ASC are all Joneses, headed by Caldwell, now a prominent name in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers. Three of the top four scorers at ASC are also Joneses. Caldwell (2,234) ranks second, followed by Major (2,324), now with the NBA Houston Rockets, and Wilbert (2,014), who retired in 79 after a 10-year professional career on both ABA and NBA teams.

THE BLUE AND GOLD GAMEAlbany State College's returning

varsity, making its debut under new head coach Bill Williamson, outlasted the Alumni eleven in the fifth annual Blue/Gold game, winning the defensive struggle, 6 to 4.

Despite the win, Williamson was not completely enthused with his team's effort against "Doc" Suttles' Gold squad. "This year will be a rebuilding season for our squad," he said. "Our

schedule is a fairly tough one, though, so our guys will have to come around. We still have a lot of work to do before the season's first game on September 13."

A Roy Kingdom run of 27 yards for the game's lone touchdown, was the most exciting play of the

game; that is, until Berry Gordy, the Rams' scintillating defensive back of a season ago, brought the stands to life with a return of 37 yards with an intercepted pass.

Other than that, it was grind'em out football and a lot of dropped passes.

GRADS INTRODUCTION TO XREAL'WORLD

"Our great nation is being threatened by termites from within/' warned Dr. Oswald P. Bronson, guest speaker at the 61st annual commencement exercises at Albany State College," and it is your turn to be redeemers of the human race."

Bronson, who is president of Florida's Bethune-Cookman College, gave the 204 members of the 1980 ASC graduating class what one parent called "a realistic

introduction to the 'real' world.""Our country today faces the

possibility of military attacks, economic recessions, racism and bigotry," stated Bronson. "You (the graduates) must create a new moral society. You must stop crime or crime will stop you. Encourage the courts to be thorough and fair in the administration of justice."

Following several pauses for applause, Bronson continued, "We are sick and tired of people using

the poor and getting the poor addicted to drugs. We are somebody and we are people of character."

Bronson urged the graduates to become agents of reconciliation, making America a nation for all people. He added further that if Albany State is to remain a live institution, the new alumni must express gratitude — not only in words — but in deeds.

"You have a stake in this

institution," the speaker said. "Sharpen your minds. Send the legislature messages. Tell them that if matching funds can be found for Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the University of Georgia, then those funds should also be found for Albany State College."

Bronson, ASC president Charles L. Hayes said, was a fill-in for the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who could not attend the graduation exercises.

The 204 graduates receiving

degrees represented 168 undergraduate degrees and 36 master's degree recipients.

The 61st Commencement marked the end of President Hayes' 11-year tenure at Albany State College. His resignation as the head of the institution is effective as of June 30. In his farewell remarks to the '80

graduating class, he said, "We have chartered our future course ... with an excellent faculty, a viable curriculum, improved facilities and adequate resources; and we should make an even greater impact on our students and community in the years ahead. I leave this legacy with you, with the hope that it will catapult itself in developing and

expanding the mission of Albany State College ... ," Hayes said, in closing.

Miriam R. Sanderlin of Albany, a nursing major, is the top ranking student in this year's class, graduating with a 3.92 cumulative academic average and summa cum laude honors.

EPILOGUE

The final academic year of a decade has drawn to a close and two questions enter our minds as the new decade approaches: "What happened?" and "What lies ahead?" As we look over and review our proofs for the 1980 Ram, our memories are jogged by glimpses of some of the major campus events related through pictures and copy. The complete answer to what happened this year at the College, however, lies in the combination of the individual and collective experiences of more than 1,800 students, faculty and administrators who have been either deeply or apathetically involved in campus events during the past year.

The 1980 Ram has not, by any means, attempted to report all of the details of all the events that occurred on campus this year. Our purpose, primarily, has been to graphically portray, in a most visual manner, the highlights of some of the major events and activities as they involve our students and faculty, and perhaps lead the reader to reflect on these events with new insight gained through the passage of time.

What lies ahead? We can only speculate, but it is our hope that as the College's students, faculty, and administrators prepare to face the challenges of his new decade, they will reflect upon the events of the past year and learn something from their mistakes and successes.

Finally, the '80 Yearbook staff, in producing this yearbook, the first for the College since 1973, tried to create a book that was different in its presentation, yet still reflecting the same situation — Albany State

College. The few of us who remained loyal to the cause, have lived each day of our lives these past eleven months thinking about and planning our studying, other activities and responsibilities around the demands of the 1980 Ram. Now that it is finished, we hope our labors were not in vain. This is our interpretation of the College, we hope you like it.

SPECIFICATIONS

The 1980 RAM was printed and bound by Josten's/American Yearbook Company, the Clarksville, Tennessee plant. Offset lithography was used throughout. The paper stock is a 100-pound Cameo

gloss enamel. The color signatures are a 100-pound Contempore stock. The press run for the '80 RAM was 550 copies, based solely on advance sales to students, faculty and staff.

XCOVER AND ENDSHEETS: The cover material is Maroon Craftline wrapped with a Smyth/Sewed binding. The

cover design is an embossed metalay. The end-sheets are a company design, Grassland on 65-pound cover weight stock.

PHOTOGRAPHY: The photography, for the most part, in the '80 RAM was done by Adrian Jenkins, who assumed this awesome task as well as that of Editor with the defection of some key staff persons, along with his photographic staff of Timothy Watson and
