Anemia is a deficiency of hemoglobin (Hb). Hb is the protein in redblood cells, which take oxygen from the lungs to other parts of thebody.

Anemia causes fatigue, shortness of breath and dizziness. Peoplewith anemia do not feel less tasty than those with normal

hemoglobin levels. They find it more difficult to work. This means alower quality of life.

Hb levels were measured as part of a complete blood tests(complete blood count/ CBC). See Information Sheet (LI) 121 formore information on these laboratory tests.

Anemia is defined by the level of Hb. Most doctors agree that thehemoglobin level below 6.5 indicates a severe anemia. Normalhemoglobin levels are at least 12 for women and 14 for men.

Overall, women have lower Hb levels than men. Likewise withpeople who are very old or very young.
