Our mission is to inspire our community to understand global issues and cultures in an ever changing world.

Page 3: Annual Report 2008-2009

When the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded President Obama the Nobel Peace

Prize for his efforts to “strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between

peoples”, it was an outstanding affirmation of the power of diplomacy and global leadership

in our interconnected world…exactly the focus of the Minnesota International Center for the

past 56 years and its emphasis for the future.

· Ten years ago the audience for the K-12 classroom program was 15,000 children in the course

of three years. In the most recent three years, MIC reached a student audience of 71,000,

almost a 375% increase. MIC is now focusing its efforts on day-long World Cultures Days in

the schools, involving all the students in a cross-cultural experience for the entire day;

· Ten years ago MIC offered 26 World Affairs programs. In 2008-09, MIC not only presented

25 programs, but cosponsored an additional 39 events, thus reaching many more people

in our communities and collaboratively strengthening the work of our numerous partner

organizations;

· Eight years ago MIC had 18 Great Decisions discussion groups in Minnesota. In 2008-09

we had more groups than any state in the nation—a record 60 groups—meeting from

International Falls to Blue Earth, reaching a Minnesota audience of 11,369.

We have focused and grown our programs and impact in Minnesota, while holding our

expenses flat and keeping our staffing levels to the minimum.

We finished a new strategic plan this year, emphasizing MIC’s role in preparing Minnesota’s

next generation to participate and lead in a global society, while affirming the role of our

membership in serving as globally aware and globally engaged citizens at home and abroad.

Our strategic plan calls for us to strengthen our long-term funding sources, so that we can

deepen our reach to Minnesotans, no matter what the economic climate, and we plan to begin

a major gifts campaign in 2010-11.

Your generosity to MIC has made it possible for Minnesotans to experience the power of di-

plomacy and global leadership in our interconnected world for the past 56 years. With your sup-

port we will continue to have a strong and enduring impact on our community and our world.

MIC presented 25 World Affairs Forums with an attendance of 2,305 including events with ambassadors from Brazil, Russia and the Czech Republic, Middle East historian Rashid Khalidi and green economic pioneer Majora Carter; and worked with 62 community partners to bring an additional 39 internationally-focused programs to Minnesota audiences.

MIC’s State Department-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) partnered with 273 local professional resources to arrange 465 appointments for 338 visitors from 113 countries to strengthen connections and exchange between local and international professional peers.

MIC’s benefit celebrating BRAZIL was attended by 260 guests and raised $161,000.The 2009-10 benefit focus country will be MALAYSIA.

MIC conducted 11 training workshops for international speakers and 10 intercultural workshops for educators.

Great Decisions — a nationally-recognized model for foreign policy discussions in private homes, colleges, universities and workplaces across the state — convened 421 meetings for 60 groups with an attendance of 11,659. MIC also held its first Great Decisions Conference in October 2008 which was attended by 70 participants.

At WorldQuest, an international trivia competition, 47 teams comprising 376 participants competed to test their knowledge of “all things international.”

For Academic WorldQuest, the public competition’s companion for high schools students, where the winning team is sent – all expenses paid – to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level, 132 high school students from 20 high schools fielded 33 teams.

MIC engaged with 42 local companies by offering private networking opportunities and receptions with international leaders and visitors; all benefits of the Corporate Membership Program.

MIC’s dinner hosting program arranged 118 dinners with MIC members for 279 international guests from 83 countries — a uniquely personal way of opening global doors for our community.

For MIC’s K-12 education program, International Classroom Connection, 151 speakers from 50 countries made 900 presentations to a student audience of 30,000.
