Dear CAIS Community,

The 2011-2012 school year was a milestone for CAIS, as we celebrated our school’s 30 year anniver-

sary. Many of you know that our anniversary tag line “30, standing strong” (san shi er li 三十而立) was

taken from the Confucian Analects (lun yu《论语》), a collection of Confucius’s sayings compiled by

his disciples. The full Analects passage from which our 30th anniversary tag line was derived can be

found on the cover.

This passage lent itself to the celebration of our 30th anniversary, for at 30 we surely stood strong. For

me, it was remarkable to think that 30 years ago, a small group of risk-taking individuals embraced

Chinese and made a commitment to start the nation’s first Chinese English dual language immersion

school. In 1981, there were just four students at CAIS. Could the founders have known that 30 years

later, China’s meteoric rise would have the attention of the entire world or that their little school would

have almost 500 students and be at the forefront of a growing educational trend? All schools celebrate

anniversaries, but I think we are different—we are celebrating 30 years of Chinese English dual lan-

guage immersion. What other school is founded on such a vision? It is fitting of the Chinese American

International School that as we look forward to the opportunities and innovation the next 30 years offer

our children and our school, we also remain mindful and take our inspiration from our founders’ spirit

of innovation and risk-taking. It is also important that we reiterate our commitment to CAIS’s mission

of keeping Chinese language and culture at the core of our school program.

Our 30th milestone year had many exciting highlights: the formal anniversary celebration weekend in

December, the unveiling of a new school mission, the kick off of our multi-year Chinese English dual

language curriculum project, the launch of our three-week CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy program for all

seventh grade students and a record setting fundraising effort at the annual ShowCAIS gala, to name

a few.

Of course, these and other accomplishments would not be possible without the support and generos-

ity of our outstanding school community—you. Thank you for a great 30th year, and let’s look forward

to another 30!

Best,

Jeff Bissell

The unprecedented story of CAIS began several years before the school even

opened its doors in September 1981. In 1973, a young lawyer and activist Carol

Ruth Silver traveled from San Francisco to Taiwan to adopt her son Ah Hwei.

Like many new mothers, Carol Ruth had a vision for her son’s childhood, one

that would herald the culture of his birthplace and celebrate his roots. She later

became one of the founding members of the school.

When the doors of Chinese American Bilingual School opened on September

12, 1981, at 55 Laguna Street, four of the 10 enrolled students showed up for

class. Despite the low attendance, the four children represented an array of cul-

tural and racial backgrounds, with parents dedicated to dual language education

for myriad reasons.

Thirty years later, the innovative spirit still thrives at CAIS, which has instilled in

over 800 students an academic foundation that has prepared them to be active

contributors to the global community.

2007- CAIS celebrates

its 25th anniversary

with a gala at City Hall.

To commemorate CAIS’s 30th year of Chinese English dual language education, a series

of celebrations were held that involved the greater community and honored those who

built the foundations of the school.

In December 2011, CAIS hosted a 30th Anniversary Alumni Reunion Weekend, a three-

part celebration of the school’s foundation and future. The 30th Anniversary Alumni Re-

union Weekend kicked off with tours of both campuses, classroom visits and social time

with former teachers for alumni and their families. The Founders’ Reception brought to-

gether school founders, current parents, alumni families, current and former faculty and

friends of the school to honor the founding members, whose pioneering and innovative

spirit led CAIS to where it is today.

The weekend of events culminated at the 30th Anniversary Celebration, an event for alum-

ni, former trustees, family and friends at the Four Seasons San Francisco. At the evening

soirée, the community celebrated where the school came from; new initiatives, plans and

programs that will take CAIS into the future; and the school’s new mission statement

and alumni program. The event was the perfect venue to reconnect with old friends and

engage new ones.

理事会寄语 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Dear Families and Friends of CAIS,

CAIS and the Board of Trustees are grateful and honored by the generosity and commitment of our students and alumni,

families and friends, donors and supporters–our community. The successes of our fundraising, our 30th year as a pioneer-

ing school, and our year-long celebration and gala were all due in no small part to the participation and contribution of

many in our community.

As CAIS embarks on its next 30 years of “Leading the Way,” we are

guided by our new mission.

The Board of Trustees continues to work with Jeff Bissell and his team

to set high expectations for our students, to explore opportunities for

improving our program, and to create possibilities for expanding immer-

sion education with Chinese. As “partners” in this endeavor that is CAIS,

the Board of Trustees is also committed to working with our community

to establish a stronger direction and foundation to support our expand-

ing vision for creating a better school.

Jeff Bissell has been our Head of School for only two years. Like many in our community, we are immensely excited with

the initiatives and progress that he and his team have accomplished in this short time. Along with our community, we look

forward with Jeff to future accomplishments and successes for our school.

Thank you for your commitment to CAIS.

中美生活点滴中美生活点滴 SCHOOL LIFEMID-AUTUMN MOON FESTIVAL

Zhong qiu jie Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is one

of the most celebrated and important traditional

Chinese holidays. CAIS observed the holiday with

a series of culturally related activities throughout

the month of September. Classroom activities in-

cluded studying the cultural meanings of the festi-

val, moon cakes, values and practices for Chinese

families during the holiday season, comparisons

between Chinese and Western holidays, explora-

tion of the lunar calendar and moon cake-making.

WALLER CAMPUS GETS VERTICAL Pre-Kindergarten students started growing a few plants dur-

ing the spring of the 2010-2011 school year and decided they

wanted more. In order to expand the garden with the limited

space and budget in an urban setting, they decided to go ver-

tical. Thanks to the efforts of parent volunteer Vonceil Yara,

the Waller Pre-Kindergarten campus is home to a new verti-

cal oasis called the Woolly Pockets School Garden. A variety

of plants were grown, including winter favorites such as kale,

swiss chard, lettuce, cabbage, bok choy and flowering broc-

coli. The vertical garden provides a new opportunity for under-

standing nature, and the gardening curriculum fosters healthy

and adventurous eating.

COMMUNITY AWARDS IN LOWER SCHOOL

Monthly assemblies were held for lower

school students to bring the entire division

together and to foster a sense of commu-

nity. Community awards were given to stu-

dents who had gone out of his or her way

to help others, had a positive attitude and

embodied what it means to be a community

member in the lower school. Nominated by

teachers, community award recipients were

given a certificate in front of their peers.

REDESIGN OF MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAM The middle school arts program was revamped to give students a su-

perior arts experience and delivered by faculty of the highest caliber.

The new program streamlines the curriculum and focuses on qual-

ity and consistency in a dual language arts program. The program

consists of six disciplines: brush painting, Chinese dance, hip hop

dance, Chinese music, world music and visual art. Students are ex-

posed to each discipline during their three years in middle school.

PRE-K STUDENTS SING AT CITY HALL CAIS Pre-Kindergarten students re-

ceived a special invitation to sing a

short song in Chinese for the annual

tree lighting ceremony at City Hall with

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. The stu-

dents practiced for a week, donned

their holiday finest and sang “We Wish

You a Merry Christmas” in Chinese to

a large crowd.

LOWER SCHOOL CHINESE CLASSES CONNECT VIA SKYPE To reinforce Chinese conversation skills and to

meet students studying Chinese from around

the country, Chinese Program Director Kevin

Chang coordinated and introduced a Skype pilot

program to the second through fifth grade Chi-

nese classrooms. Various classes participated

throughout the school year, making connections

with students in immersion programs across the

United States. Students at each school prepared

questions in Chinese to ask one another. Ques-

tions ranged from weather conditions in different

states to what students’ parents did for work.

CAIS-FAIS HICKORY PLAY YARD PROJECT

In the spirit of community and volunteerism, a small group from CAIS and

French American International School (FAIS) got together over the course of

several weekends to lend their creativity and elbow grease to make aesthetic

improvements to the Hickory play yard that is shared by first through fifth grades

at both schools. Animal footprints were painted on the concrete to indicate to

children where the pathway is located, and planters were painted and then

installed to create an urban garden featuring an automatic irrigation system.

The garden area was designed to be used as a quiet area for children at recess.

BASKETBALL TEAMS ADVANCE TO THE FINALS

Three out of four CAIS basketball

teams competed in post regular sea-

son competition at the San Francisco

Athletic League semi-finals; the JV

boys and girls teams advanced to

the league finals, but were defeated.

CROSS COUNTRY AND VOLLEYBALL SEASONS END WITH A STRONG FINISHThe CAIS cross country JV girls team—comprised of fifth and sixth

graders—won the San Francisco Athletic League (SFAL) championship

trophy, while the JV boys finished second in the league and varsity girls

finished third.

The varsity volleyball team finished the post-season in second place,

losing the championship by a small margin in the playoff match, while

the JV team finished third place in the league.

YEAR OF THE DRAGON CELEBRATED In January, CAIS rang in the year of the dragon with a variety of Chinese

New Year celebrations. Chinese classes roared with excitement as they

prepared and welcomed the year of the dragon. The showcase of the cel-

ebration was the 30-foot long, multi-segmented dragon art sculpture to

which every student at CAIS contributed, from Pre-Kindergarten through

eighth grade, starting at the beginning of the school year. The four-month-

long dragon project, coordinated by art teachers Lisa Ostapinski and

Marc Peron, made its debut during the annual Mass Greeting event in the

CAIS gymnasium. The rest of the world was introduced to the dragon at

the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade when the CAIS march-

ing contingent was featured both in the parade and on television. Brad

Sugarman and Lisa Tam led a team of parent volunteers to coordinate

the “Carp Jumping Over the Dragon Gate” theme. The 40-student CAIS

marching unit in the parade featured hand-made carp, water and fire-

themed characters, lantern bearers and the 30-foot dragon centerpiece.

ASIAN ART MUSEUM CHINESE NEW YEAR An afternoon of Chinese New Year

activities featuring CAIS students

happened at the Asian Art Museum

and included student performances

by eighth graders, classical dance

performances by three CAIS dance

groups, Chinese music ensemble

performances by fourth through sev-

enth graders, a lion dance perfor-

mance, and alumni Chinese music

ensemble featuring alumnus Reylon

Yount on the yangqin. After the per-

formances, a reception opened in one

of the museum galleries featuring the

CAIS second grade class exhibition

titled “New Year Celebrations” that

remained on display at the museum

for a month.

MATHCOUNTS TEAM WINS FIRST PLACE IN REGIONAL COMPETITION

Under the leadership of longtime math teacher Rita Soukhova, the

MATHcounts team took first place in regional competition against

other San Francisco area middle school students. The competition

consisted of three rounds: the sprint round, 30 problems in 40 min-

utes; target round, 8 problems in 24 minutes; team round, 10 prob-

lems in 20 minutes. The 16 highest scoring students from the three

rounds went on to compete in the individual countdown round where

they had 45 seconds to complete each problem without calculators.

Of the 16 who made it to the countdown round, six were CAIS stu-

dents.

SEVENTH GRADERS PLACE AT SCIENCE FAIR During the spring, seventh graders Benjamin Lee and Pierce

McDonnell entered the 30th Annual San Francisco Bay Area

Science Fair along with more than 200 students from 28

Bay Area middle schools. Benjamin took home first place in

the seventh grade physical science category, while Pierce

placed third in the seventh grade biological science category.

Benjamin was nominated to compete in the 2012 California

State Science Fair in Los Angeles where he was awarded

an honorable mention for his “Repulsive Fruits” project.

CHINESE LANGUAGE BRIDGE CUP CONTESTSCAIS students had a great showing at the Confucius Institute 8th Annual Chinese Language Bridge Cup Contests, which

were open to kindergarten through high school students from the Bay Area. Contest participants chose from categories

that included Chinese brush and pen, calligraphy, Chinese painting, Chinese drawing, Chinese composition, Chinese-

English and English-Chinese translation and Chinese poetry recital. The purpose of the annual contests is to provide more

opportunities for students to demonstrate their linguistic and cultural talent, and showcase their interest and achievements

in learning Chinese language and culture.

LOWER SCHOOL READING BUDDY PROGRAMThe second and fifth grade Chinese reading buddy program was

launched during the 2011-2012 school year for all second and fifth grade

students. The intention was to create additional opportunities for stu-

dents to use their Chinese language in a meaningful, practical and

interactive setting. The activities for all second and fifth grade stu-

dents took place once a month for approximately 30 minutes and

were supervised by the second and fifth grade Chinese teaching team.

Fifth grade students served as the teachers and led various read-

ing or storytelling activities followed by questions and discussions with

the second grade students in a one-on-one or small group setting.

SIXTH GRADE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE As part of CAIS’s multicultural approach to art projects, middle school art

teacher Marc Peron featured a unit on art surrounding Dia de los Muertos,

Day of the Dead holiday. He asked his sixth grade students to create their

own sugar skulls, which is a traditional medium of art used to honor de-

ceased family members in Latin American cultures during the holiday. The

sixth grade artwork was on display for three weeks at a Hayes Valley gal-

lery that specializes in Latin American art.

EIGHTH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT IMMIGRATION FROM SENIOR CITIZENS

Led by eighth grade Chinese teacher Tang Laoshi, the eighth grade class visited senior citizens at the

Family Services Agency in San Francisco to learn about Chinese immigration experiences. The goal of

the project was to integrate what students had learned about immigration in the classroom. Students

were arranged in small groups where they took turns interviewing the seniors in Chinese while the

conversation was recorded on video cameras. This was an opportunity for students to understand

and respect the difficult life experiences that some of the older generations have faced. Following the

visit, eighth graders edited their recorded stories and shared the final products with their storytellers,

turning the experience into an oral history project.

CLTAC MANDARIN SPEECH CONTEST RESULTSWith 46 student contestants, CAIS had a big

presence at the 37th annual CLTAC Mandarin

Speech Contest held at Lowell High School.

Each year many CAIS students participate in

the CLTAC Mandarin Speech Contest and bring

back a wonderful experience of competing in a

contest to help build upon their presentation

and Chinese oral skills. Three students won

first place in the contest, which was comprised

of students from across the greater Bay Area.

PI DAY CELEBRATED IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Pi Day (3.14), a middle school tradition, is celebrated in

the sixth grade class with a ∏ pi memorization contest

followed by pie-eating for all. Eight students participated

in the pi memorization contest, which involves reciting as

many digits of the mathematical constant as they can. This

year’s winner, Joey Silberman, made it to the 111th digit.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC ENSEMBLES PERFORM AT DE YOUNG MUSEUM

Middle school members of the Gold and Black Pearl Music

Ensembles performed at the de Young Museum in Golden

Gate Park in conjunction with the “Young at Art” exhibition.

The showcase on student creativity highlights visual and

performing art by kindergarten through high school students

throughout San Francisco. CAIS students’ visual artwork was

also on display, including the school’s magnificent communi-

ty dragon that debuted during Chinese New Year festivities.

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE CLASS SELECTED TO JUDGE IN FLAME CONTESTStudents in Carol Hsih’s fifth grade science classes were invited to judge five entries submitted to the Flame Challenge, a

worldwide contest judged by 11-year-olds from over 100 schools across the United States. Scientists from all over the world

submitted entries to answer the question, “What is a flame?” in a way that an 11-year-old could understand. After the initial

judging, CAIS, along with nine other schools, was invited to be part of the finalists judging in an online video assembly. Dur-

ing the video conference hosted by actor Alan Alda, the group decided on the winner of the challenge.

SCHOOL YEAR ENDS WITH ULTRA ARTS FAIR /

END OF YEAR PICNIC The Parents Association teamed up with the

arts program department to bring a fun-filled af-

ternoon of visual art from the whole school and

performances by the fifth through eighth grade

music ensembles. Additional activities included

parent-child art projects and music and dance

classes. The community event was held in con-

junction with the end of year picnic and served

as a nice ending to CAIS’s 30th anniversary year.

CAIS STUDENTS BETA TEST IPAD APP There are many benefits of being located in such close proximity to so many Bay Area tech startups: job op-

portunities, innovative minds and close access to tech products. Motion Math, one of the many companies

developing apps in the education arena, approached CAIS to help test their latest app. Motion Math has

produced four iPad apps to date, all of which are math games geared toward elementary and middle school

students. The developers came to CAIS multiple times over the course of the school year to test their latest

app on students and to get real world input. The app launched to the public and CAIS students’ names can

be found listed in the game credits.

The exchange program at CAIS started in 2002 to promote cultural understanding, second language proficiency and in-

dependence for students from CAIS and abroad. The program has evolved to become a highlight for those who partici-

pate. The program is defined by the objectives of giving students the opportunity to use Chinese language in authentic

cultural contexts, learn actively through experience and develop self-confidence.

FIFTH GRADE EXCHANGE TRIPRen-Ai Elementary School (Taipei, Taiwan)

An optional trip for those who wish to participate, fifth grade students spend two weeks

living with their host families, and their exchange “buddies” also come to San Francisco

to live with their American friends from CAIS. Students benefit from this unique immersion

experience and form new friendships as they travel, study and relax together, teaching one

another the differences and similarities between their worlds.

While in Taipei, CAIS fifth graders join their exchange buddies for a number of regular fifth

grade classes in language arts, social studies, science and math and also attend cultural

enrichment classes, which are specially designed for CAIS students. Additionally, they par-

ticipate in field trips, educational tours and experiential activities in and around the city of

Taipei.

During the trip to Taipei in 2012, the fifth graders experienced many exciting activities during

their two weeks, including a visit from San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee’s wife Anita to their ex-

change school. The students participated in the Children’s Day holiday and Tomb Sweeping

Day, practiced their Chinese calligraphy, visited the National Palace Museum and learned

the art of the Chinese yoyo che ling from their exchange buddies.

SEVENTH GRADE CAIS-SYA BEIJING ACADEMYBeijing Normal University Sanfan Middle School (Beijing, China)

New in 2011-2012, the CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy is a structured, three-

week academic spring program for all CAIS seventh grade students, in part-

nership with School Year Abroad (SYA) and Beijing Normal University Sanfan

Middle School.

During the program, the seventh graders started each day with a three-

hour small group language class. The highly focused class involved a daily

lesson, such as how to communicate and follow street and walking direc-

tions and how to talk to their homestay families about the development and

changes that are taking place in China. Their morning lessons also included

recess exercises to help get the blood flowing with calisthenics. The after-

noons were spent putting what they learned during the morning into practice

through excursions throughout Beijing. For example, one excursion involved

going to the hutongs, the narrow street and alleyway districts of Beijing.

The students were assigned interviewing tasks to figure out who lives there,

who visits and how the area has changed with time. Completing the lesson

involved talking to both tourists and residents, and using what they learned

during their morning class.

Evenings were spent with their homestay families, where they experienced

the everyday life of being a Beijing resident. However, the students’ learn-

ing didn’t necessarily end at the end of the school day. Each evening they

were given homework to interview their host family members regarding a

particular subject, which they in turn formulated into an oral report for the

next day’s morning lesson.

EIGHTH GRADE EXCHANGEBeijing Normal University Sanfan Middle School (Beijing, China)

Similar to the fifth grade trip, the eighth grade exchange is an optional trip for those who

wish to participate. Eighth graders spend two weeks living with their host families in Bei-

jing, and they get to host their exchange “buddies” in San Francisco earlier in the year.

Although the class of 2012 eighth graders attended the same Beijing middle school as

the seventh grade class, their experience was completely separate. Their first days of

getting acclimated to Beijing life included visits to culturally significant spots such as

Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park. They also attended classes

with their exchange buddies and their host families kept them busy during the evenings

doing typical everyday activities such as grocery shopping and exposing the students

to the wonderful delicacies of Beijing.

求新•求变求新•求变 INITIATIVES AND CHANGES

During the 2011-2012 school year, CAIS undertook a series of integrated and strategic school improvement initiatives

that began the prior year with input from faculty, staff, parents, surveys, stakeholder meetings, CAIS’s 2008 accreditation

report, observations and research on best practices. Four initiatives were introduced during CAIS’s 30th anniversary year.

NEW MISSIONThe Board of Trustees is required, as a condition of accredi-

tation, to review the mission statement periodically. Timing

this process with CAIS’s 30th anniversary provided a natural

reflection point to evaluate what is important to the school.

Trustees were guided by input from all of our constituents

- faculty, staff, parents, trustees and students. CAIS rolled

out a mission statement that reflects who we are, what we

say we do, and is woven into the everyday life at CAIS.

心怀中华

精益求精

立足世界

Embrace Chinese

Become your best self

Create your place in the world

As the mission was unpacked and rolled out, CAIS con-

tinued to explore all of the ways in which we made mis-

sion-consistent and deliberate decisions about what stu-

dents should learn, how teachers should teach, the kinds

of teachers we hire, the types of families we admit, the pri-

orities reflected in the way we construct our budget, how

we assess the progress of our students and what kind of

co-curricular programs we support.

CAIS CURRICULUM PROJECTLed by CAIS’s Assistant Head of School, Curriculum Eliza-

beth Larose and Chinese Program Director Kevin Chang,

the CAIS curriculum project is a three-plus year plan to

develop and implement a model Chinese English dual

language immersion curriculum that leverages, codifies

and improves upon the school’s 30 years of experience.

CAIS has partnered with an outside team of curriculum

experts from the National Foreign Language Center at

the University of Maryland and Curriculum 21, a nation-

leading curriculum consultancy group. The school has

been able to move forward quickly and aggressively on

this initiative largely due to seed money from a gener-

ous anonymous donor; this generosity has energized

the school to take on this challenging and exciting task.

INITIATIVES AND CHANGES 求新•求变求新•求变TRANSITION FROM COMPLEX TO SIMPLIFIED CHARACTERS

School faculty and administration have articulated interest

in producing graduates who are strong readers and writ-

ers of simplified characters, the official script used in main-

land China and Singapore. The discussion of CAIS transi-

tioning from complex to simplified characters as the main

script for Chinese instruction was ongoing throughout the

school year, sparked robust discussions with every con-

stituent and illustrated just how passionate our community

is about Chinese language and culture. Chinese Program

Director Kevin Chang and Chinese faculty designed an

implementation plan that will roll out the following school

year. This plan ensures that CAIS graduates are strong

readers and writers of simplified script, while considering

the concerns of the community and the responsibility of

the school for teaching Chinese in a cultural and histori-

cal context. Students will continue to use complex charac-

ters and examine the relationship between the two scripts.

CAIS-SYA BEIJING ACADEMYDuring the 2011-2012 school year, CAIS launched the

CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy, a structured, three-week ac-

ademic program for all CAIS seventh grade students. The

program ran in the spring in partnership with School Year

Abroad (SYA) and Beijing Normal University Sanfan Middle

School. The CAIS Board of Trustees views this program as

fundamental to the school’s mission and is a major strate-

gic priority for CAIS. The Board exhibited this support by

developing a long term financial plan that insures the pro-

gram’s sustainability; CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy will be

an integral part of the seventh grade CAIS curriculum, and

all seventh grade students will have access to the pro-

gram regardless of their families’ financial circumstances.

In the inaugural year of the program, a generous anony-

mous donor provided seed money that covered 80% of the

program startup and operating costs, and seventh grade

families were asked to contribute the remaining 20%. An-

other generous CAIS seventh grade family stepped up to

provide additional financial support to those families in

need of financial assistance.

奖项奖项 AWARDSPHILIP BUTLER SMITH VOLUNTEER AWARDThe Philip Butler Smith Volunteer Award is CAIS’s first volunteer award. It was established

in loving memory of Philip Butler Smith, father of Victor Smith (2003), whose life tragically

ended in a cross country biking accident. While he was a CAIS parent, Phil was the ultimate

volunteer, involved in every aspect of school life from docent tours to cooking his famous

turkey for Thanksgiving. The parents of the class of 2003 and others at CAIS established the

Philip Butler Smith Volunteer Award to honor his memory and the impact Phil made at CAIS.

Stephanie Reynaga is the 2011-2012 recipient of the Philip Butler Smith Volunteer Award.

Stephanie has worked quietly and tirelessly with the admissions department, the Parents As-

sociation and Parents Association for Early Childhood Education (PAECE). Significantly, she

was the driving force transforming the Oak yard into an outdoor fairground during the Ultra

Arts Fair. Stephanie is always the first to answer the call for volunteer helpers at any school

event. Stephanie’s name will be engraved on a plaque displayed at CAIS along with past

award recipients.

As part of the Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration, the

AsianWeek Foundation recognizes individuals in education

who are committed to promoting cultural diversity. This year,

Head of School Jeff Bissell was one of six finalists to accept

the 8th Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration School

Award. Nominations were accepted from the public to

identify Bay Area schools, students, administrators, faculty

and staff who bring cultural awareness to the community.

AWARDS 奖项奖项

CAIS CITIZENSHIP AWARD Each year, students from fifth and eighth grades are selected to receive the CAIS Citizenship Award. The award was

established by parent Winnie Fok in memory of her late husband Norman Ng, father of CAIS alumnus Alec Ng (2008)

and class of 2013 student Emma Ng. The award is given to students who exemplify an extraordinary commitment of

friendship and camaraderie to their peers and demonstrate consistent support and respect of fellow students. The award

includes $250 for each recipient to donate to the charity of his or her choice.

Fifth grade student Evan Lim and eighth grade students Justin Kim and Nathan Wang were awarded the Citizenship

Award for the 2011-2012 school year. The Make-A-Wish Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital each re-

ceived a cash donation on behalf of the award recipients. The qualities recognized by the citizenship award are critical to

the creation and maintenance of the tight-knit CAIS student community. These are the qualities of friendship and respect

that we all value and all strive to practice every day.

专业进修专业进修 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The development and support of CAIS’s faculty and staff is paramount to the success of the students. In

order to live the mission and “become your best self,” CAIS faculty and staff all take part in various pro-

fessional development opportunities during weekends, vacations and summer. Funds for professional

development are designated each year for faculty and staff to hone their skills and expertise by attend-

ing and presenting at conferences, workshops and classes. Below is just a few of the many events in

which CAIS participated throughout the year.

Middle school science teachers Susan Sherman and Mark Churchill, along with Middle School Director

Elizabeth Larose, represented CAIS at the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Develop-

ment) conference where they presented effective techniques on how to engage students. The presenta-

tion was called “Science Alive” and focused on the hands-on science learning that is provided at CAIS

in middle school.

Head of School Jeff Bissell and Chinese Program Director Kevin Chang traveled to Washington DC to

join other leaders in Chinese immersion education and participate in a new exploratory project on Chi-

nese language learning in the early grades. The purpose of the event was to assess the needs and state

of the field of Chinese language immersion, and to bring together key practitioners to contribute ideas

and information to a report that the Asia Society is compiling. The report will address best practices and

key strategies in early Chinese language and immersion.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 专业进修专业进修

On behalf of CAIS, Chinese Program Director Kevin Chang traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota

to build a relationship with the nation’s first Chinese immersion public charter school. Estab-

lished in 2006, Ying Hua Academy is a one-of-a-kind dual language, tuition-free, public charter

school. Invited to present a professional development session to Ying Hua’s Chinese faculty,

Kevin presented many of the things CAIS is doing in the classroom and shared best practices.

Because there are amazing resources and knowledge within CAIS, the school hosted its first

“faculty for faculty” presentations. Led by Lower School Director Peter Moore, CAIS faculty

volunteered to design presentations and share their expertise with their colleagues. Conducted

after school over the course of a few days, art teachers Lisa Ostapinski and Marc Peron led a

discussion on visual art and language development, Technology Coordinator Kerri Willa dem-

onstrated digital storytelling with iPads, teachers Ryan Hughes and Anna Donnelly presented

on writing personal narratives and first grade Chinese teachers Shyu Laoshi and Geng Laoshi

shared best practices in unit design.

Page 28: Annual Report 2011-12

家长协会家长协会 PARENTS ASSOCIATION

The Parents Association includes all CAIS parents and is focused on building

a vibrant CAIS community through social events, fund raising, communications

and parent involvement. The PA Council is an elected body that coordinates the

activities of the Parents Association and represents the interests of CAIS families

to school administration and the Board of Trustees. Council members are elected

to two-year terms.

During the 2011-2012 school year, the PA coordinated a variety of new events

including a Mid-Autumn Moon Festival celebration held in conjunction with the

annual back-to-school picnic. Mid-Autumn Moon Festival activities such as Chi-

nese crafts and storytelling were incorporated into the picnic to help bring addi-

tional meaning to this important Chinese holiday.

Walk to School Day is another new parent-led event in which CAIS participated.

The one-day event brought families together to walk to school as a group and

help build awareness for the need for walkable communities.

From coordinating annual picnics, the Holiday Faire, family camp weekends and

ski trips, to managing the hot lunch program and faculty and staff appreciation

events, the Parents Association is an important component of the CAIS community.

理事会财务长报告 理事会财务长报告 FROM THE BOARD TREASURER

FROM THE TREASURER OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SUSAN CHENG

Chinese American International School continues to be in an excellent financial position with a

strong balance sheet and balanced annual operating budgets. The Trustee-led Assets Committee

and the school’s administrators continue to carefully manage resources to support the program’s

expansion and enrichment, while fine-tuning budget allocations to maximize efficiency–all with the

goal of supporting the mission of the school now and into the future. During the 2011-2012 fis-

cal year, the school spent over $9 million providing faculty and programs to create a rigorous and

enriching dual language immersion experience for our children. In addition, the school allocated its

resources to provide tuition assistance and to pay for facilities at two campuses. Revenues from tu-

ition, auxiliary programs and the generous support of the CAIS community totaled over $13 million.

In its drive to embrace best practices, the school continues to grow its operating reserves so that

it can comfortably claim that it can weather any sudden emergencies; these operating reserves are

only for emergencies and are not available to cover costs associated with future facilities expansion.

Yet again, the school reached a new record in voluntary support, thanks to generous donors in

the CAIS community and outside donors who believe in and want to support the school’s mission.

Thanks to this incredible generosity, the Annual Fund reached more than $850,000, with support

from over 80% of our current families. These funds provide essential support for our tuition assis-

tance, professional development, technology improvements and other programs, and are a testa-

ment to the enormous commitment of our Annual Fund Class Captains and other parent volunteers

for such events as ShowCAIS. Additionally, generous anonymous donors provided initial funding

for the new seventh grade CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy experience and for continuing curriculum

development activities.

As we move into our fourth decade, Chinese American International School is a thriving institution

with sound financial management and a uniquely generous and committed community of faculty,

parents, alumni and friends. The Board of Trustees and the school administration continue to rely on

your participation to realize our goals and look forward to your ongoing support.

为中美尽一份心为中美尽一份心 WAYS TO GIVE

ANNUAL FUNDAnnual Fund gifts make up the difference between what tu-

ition covers and the actual cost of running the school. The

money goes directly to CAIS’s current year operating expens-

es, including faculty salaries and benefits, teaching tools,

professional development for faculty and staff and mainte-

nance of our facilities. The Annual Fund is the top priority

in giving; every dollar you give to the Annual Fund can be

counted as a charitable donation for tax-deductable purpos-

es. Annual Fund participation inspires other members of the

CAIS community to give back and fosters a culture of giving.

MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMSIf you work for a company that offers an employee match-

ing program, this may allow you to double or even triple

your gift to the school. CAIS will submit the form to the

company’s matching gift department, which sends a do-

nation directly to CAIS. By making a contribution to the

Annual Fund, your action produces a greater impact than

the monetary value of your donation.

CAPITAL AND ENDOWMENT GIFTSCapital and endowment gifts include major gifts to meet

building and endowment needs the school cannot pay for out

of tuition funds. In the coming years, the most critical issue

for CAIS will be building financial security and ensuring that

the facilities meet the needs of its growing student body and

its programs. CAIS completed “Building for an International

Century,” a two-year $1.5 million campaign in September

2007, for campus upgrades to meet the increased program,

facility and administrative needs for a growing student body.

PLANNED GIVINGPlanned giving is a gift you pledge to give now or after

your lifetime. Planned gifts require a thoughtful planning

process and assistance from professional advisors, mak-

ing them a sound choice for donation options. A planned

gift may allow you to make a larger gift to CAIS than you

otherwise could from your current assets. Depending

on how a planned gift is set up, it may let you receive

a steady flow of income for life, earn higher investment

yields, or reduce your capital gains or estate taxes. At

CAIS, we encourage our supporters who are considering

planned giving to consult an attorney or financial planner

about creating a will or trust.

ALEXANDER MASSIALAS (2008)Alexander Massialas represented Team USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London on the

men’s foil team. “My dad never forced me to do any of it, but the first time I saw it I thought it

was cool and wanted to try it,” Alexander, son of three-time Olympian Greg Massialas, said.

“He’s been there with me ever since I was little, and a lot of my inspiration comes from being

a little kid and walking around the house and seeing the Olympic rings and all the awards and

stuff.” Alexander started his collegiate life at Stanford in September.

ALEXANDRA WONG (2008)Golfer Alexandra Wong took the San Francisco Golf Championships title at the 95th San Fran-

cisco Golf Championships last spring. She has numerous golf accomplishments under her belt,

including a win at the AJGA Aspen Junior Classic in 2011 and a top 20 at Junior World. Alexan-

dra now plays on the women’s golf team as a freshman at Princeton University.

ROMI YOUNT (2011) Romi Yount was congratulated by Governor Jerry Brown last spring after she performed a

30-minute solo on the guzheng at an Asia Society fundraising dinner at the Ritz-Carlton San

Francisco. CAIS Arts Program Director Susan Kennedy accompanied Romi, who is continuing

her Chinese music studies with CAIS music teacher Gangqin Zhao.

REYLON YOUNT (2008)Reylon Yount was selected as one of 18 national recipients of the 2011 Davidson Fellows, a

national scholarship program that recognizes gifted youth. The focus of his Davidson Institute

application included a series of performances on the yangqin entitled “The Second Silk Road:

Bridging East and West through Chinese Music.” Having studied the yangqin at CAIS with

Gangqin Zhao, Reylon stated, “This award belongs to my schools and teachers as much as it

does to me. Without the quality education and unique opportunities CAIS provided, as well as

the inspiration and guidance from Ms. Kennedy and Zhao Laoshi, this would not have been pos-

sible.” Reylon entered Harvard for his freshman year in September.

In its 30th anniversary year, CAIS inducted its 18th graduating eighth grade class with 35 students into the school’s grow-

nized for completing lower school and eighth graders were congratulated for finishing their education at CAIS. Class of

Lick-Wilmerding High School, Urban School, International High School, Lowell High School, University High School,

怀念Alice怀念ALICE REMEMBERING ALICE CARNESOn February 8, 2012, CAIS founding board member,

friend, leader and education professional Alice Carnes

passed away after a six-year battle with cancer. A civic

leader of uncommon style and wit, Alice’s selfless hard

work helped shape CAIS from its early journey into what

it is today. Alice was the force of nature behind the ac-

quisition and construction of the former Caltrans head-

quarters that is now our school’s Oak Street campus.

In 2009, our Waller Campus was named the Alice A.

Carnes Pre-Kindergarten Center in recognition of her

more than 25 years of dedication to CAIS.

Outside of her involvement with CAIS, Alice contributed

to many Democratic Party causes; was one of the first

women to produce television programming in the early,

very male-dominated days of TV; and can be credited

with Tom Lantos’s decision to run for congressional of-

fice. Although Alice’s career spanned many fields, clos-

est to her heart was our school; Alice shepherded CAIS

through many chapters of growth and challenge and

several heads of school. Countless children and fami-

lies will remember her fondly.
