Activities and participation in conferences
1. SPIE FOCUS Summer School on Optics & Photonics (1-3 June 2017, Oulu, Finland)
Members of our SPIE Student Chapter were the main organizers of the SPIE FOCUS Summer
School on Optics and Photonics. This School was held in Finland for the first time in its history.
More than 100 students, young scientists and representative of 7 SPIE Student Chapters attended
this event. All participants had opportunity to discover recent trends in Photonics, Optics and
Optoelectronics; meet with renowned International researchers and experts; visit lectures,
presentations, poster sessions and development workshops; meet with local companies; discover the
beauty of the Finnish midnight sun.

2. European Conference on Biomedical Optic (25-29 June 2017, Munich, Germany)
In 2017, Members of our SPIE Student Chapter (Mr. Anton Sdobnov, Ms. Tatiana Avsievich, and
Ms. Maria Borovkova) successfully presented their oral and poster presentations at the ECBO
conference. Also, they met with members of Orel SPIE Student Chapter. At this meeting, future
perspectives of collaborations and research visits were discussed.

3. Summer Schools in Spain and Mexico
Our Chapter representatives, Ms. Maria Borovkova and Ms. Aleksandra Zienkiewicz took part in
two summer schools: International School on Light Sciences and Technologies (19-23 June 2017,
Santander, Spain) and Siegman International School on Lasers (6-11 August 2017, Leon, Mexico).
The young scientists participated in the lectures delivered by important personalities of the world of
optics and photonics. Among these were a Nobel Laureate Shuji Nakamura and Prof. Katarina
Svanberg, who was honored with SPIE Gold Medal of the Society in the same year. The Schools
were also a great opportunity to meet other students and to get to know small piece of the beautiful
countries of Spain and Mexico.

4. Saratov Fall Meeting (25-30 September 2017, Saratov, Russia)
In 2017, members of our SPIE Student Chapter (Mr. Anton Sdobnov, Ms. Tatiana Avsievich, Ms.
Aleksandra Zienkiewicz and Mr. Lukasz Surazynski) took part in the annual Saratov Fall Meeting
and Symposium on Optics and Biophotonics. These events are traditionally organized by SPIE
Fellow Prof. Valery Tuchin and his colleagues at Saratov National Research State University. The
conference was devoted to the recent developments and applications of optical and laser
technologies in medicine and biology. Most importantly, Mr. Lukasz Surazynski and Mr. Anton
Sdobnov were awarded with 2nd
and 3rd
prizes in the Best Student Poster Paper competition.

5. Visits of International lecturers (October & December 2017, Oulu, Finland)
We are glad to host two renowned scientists, Dr. Pavel Bulkin from Laboratory for Thin Film and
Interfaces Physics, Ecole Polytechnique (France) and Dr. Artashes Karmenyan from Physics
Department of National Dong Hwa University (ROC, Taiwan). They delivered interesting short
courses “Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition for dielectric applications” and “Advanced
optical methods in experimental research in life sciences”, respectively.

6. Collaboration with University of Latvia SPIE Student Chapter (November 2018, Riga)
President of our SPIE Student Chapter, Mr. Anton Sdobnov took part in a research visit in the
University of Latvia (Riga, Latvia). During this visit, he also met with members of University of
Latvia SPIE Student Chapter, where possible collaborations and joint events were discussed.

7. Open Doors Days (1-2 November 2017, Oulu, Finland)
Early November our University organized traditional Open Doors Days for high school children,
who were interested in studies in the University the following year. Our Student Chapter was
actively involved in the event, at the premises of the recently opened Fablab.

8. International school visits (13-14 February 2018, Oulu, Finland)
Our SPIE Student Chapter visited the International school of Oulu again. As in the previous year,
the program for the day started with presentations on Physics of colors, Optics and applications of
different fields of science (Chemistry, Electronics) made by Chapter members. It was followed by
group sessions for the kids, where they were engaged in experiments powered by SPIE outreach kits
and Chapter-made setups showcasing fascination of Optics and Electronics. The event concluded
with a quiz for students, where small prizes were awarded to the winners and small take-away sets
were given to all students. We also supplied the teacher with educational material to be shared with
other classes of the school in their future Physic Education classes. Such visits become a good
tradition. Next year, our Chapter will visit this school again.
