Wellcome Trust This Trust has given Ell,000 to buy ancillary X-ray equip- ment for a study of the incidence of bilharzia in Nigeria, which is being carried out under the direction of Prof. A. 0. Lucas at University College Hospital, Ibadan. Hospital Board Appointments Mr. Kenneth Younger has been appointed chairman of the Board of Governors of St. George’s Hospital, London; Lady Llewelyn-Davies chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London; and Mrs. E. W. Parsons chairman of the Board of Governors of the United Cambridge Hospitals. Selection of Patients for Dialysis Unit At the suggestion of the consultant who is to be in charge of the new intermittent renal dialysis unit at Lodge Moor Hospital, the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board has agreed to set up a panel to which the consultant may turn for advice in determin- ing priorities for treatment among suitable patients. The composition of the panel is to be considered further by the Board’s medical committee. Cancer Research Grants for 1967 The British Empire Cancer Campaign has given a total of El,024,101 to nineteen centres in the United Kingdom for research in 1967, and a further E30,420 to centres in the West Indies, Fiji, Kampala, Ibadan, and Nairobi. The three largest grants awarded in the U.K. are to the Institute of Cancer Research, Royal Cancer Hospital, London (E231,000); to the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London (E162,721); and to the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, Manchester (E134,250). Grants abroad are awarded chiefly to set up and run local cancer registries, and the largest has gone to Makerere University College in Kampala (E21,983). Sir Arthur Porritt has been appointed the next governor-general of New Zealand. Dr. A. L. Stalker will give an Erasmus Wilson demonstration at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London I W.C.2, on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 5 P.M. The title will be Blood- sludging-Myth or Reality ? Prof. A. J. Harding Rains will give a lecture at the Wolfson Insti- , tute, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Ducane Road, London W.12, on Friday, Jan. 6, at 10.15 A.M. His subject will be biliary surgery. Clinical demonstrations, open to doctors without fee, will be held at the Institute of Diseases of the Chest, Brompton Hospital, London S.W.3, on Fridays at 5 P.M., from Jan. 13 to March 17. Open lectures will be held on Wednesdays at 5 P.M., from Jan. 11 to March 8. An exhibition of medical coats of arms and seals is on view at’the Royal College of Physicians of London, 11 St. Andrew’s Place, London N.W.I, until Tuesday, March 14. It includes the arms, seal, and motto of the college and the arms of fellows.
