April 2015 Breaking News GUARD Initiative The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) is undertaking a study to analyze Georgia's aerospace and defense sectors. We are entering the survey portion of the study and we need your help in publicizing the initiative, and in completing a short (8 question) confidential online survey. The GDEcD's Workforce division and Center of Innovation for Aerospace are partnering on the GUARD Initiative, funded largely through a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Office of Economic Adjustment. Unmanned Systems Conferences AUVSI 2015 Conferences AUVSI will be holding the 2015 Unmanned Systems Conference & Trade Show from May 47, 2015 at the Georgia World Congress Center. With more than 8,000 attendees from over 55 countries, you will have the chance to network with top experts in the unmanned systems and robotics industries. Learn about important issues facing the industries as well as advancements and opportunities that are on the horizon. More than 100 technical sessions, panels and workshops will allow you to collaborate with colleagues from all over the globe. Click here to register for this exciting event! Earlier in March, AUVSI Atlanta welcomed over 60 attendees to its fourth Unmanned Systems in Precision Agriculture Conference at the UGA Tifton Conference Center. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black was the Keynote Speaker at the opening session, urging the audience to work to embrace the new technology for everyone's benefit. The Keynote Speaker for the second day's session was Mr. Mike Wilson of the FAA UAS Program Office, and he gave a comprehensive talk about the FAA's efforts to enable the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in precision agriculture. The conference had eleven presentations ranging from the technical aspects of UAS operations with crops such as blueberries, precision agriculture data management, and an entertaining briefing on the legal aspects of UAS operations. Terminal Velocity's Down­to­Earth CargoDelivery AspirationsIn late April or early May, Near Space Corp. plans to use a high­altitude balloon to carry Terminal Velocity Aerospace's soccer­ball­size re­entry device to 30,000 meters and drop it. This willbe an important test of the firm's new product, RED­4U, anaeroshell designed to protect everything from space­basedbiological experiments to asteroid samples on journeys throughEarth's atmosphere.

Two Georgia CompaniesReceive UASExemptionsThe first two UAS exemptions forcommercial operations in Georgiahave been granted to Norcrossbased VSG Unmanned, andCartersville's Phoenix Air. Bothcompanies are members of ourUnmanned Systems WorkingGroup.

World War II Heritage Days April 17­18, 2015Peachtree City, GAThe WWII Heritage Days presented bythe Dixie Wing of the Commemorative AirForce (CAF) is held in Peachtree Cityeach year to educate the public aboutthe sacrifices of "the greatest generation"during World War II. Featured this year will be the CAF B­24Liberator "Diamond Lil". This incrediblyrare B­24A model was one of the very

first off the assembly line and is one of two still flying in theworld. The recent bestselling book and block­buster movie "Unbroken",featured the B­24 and tells the inspirational story of LouisZamperini. The B­24 will be available for tours and flights ­ andfor a very special event ­five WWII B­24 crew members arescheduled for a "Warbird in Review" and will share their wartimeexperiences.

Aviation History

Flight Jackets as Living HistoryJohn Slemp, a professionalphotographer from Atlanta, is leadingan effort to visually document "bomberjackets" from WWII. He is looking for flight jackets from anyair crewman from World War II,particularly ones displaying hand­painted artwork on one or both sides ofthe jacket. The condition is irrelevant. If you know of any flight jackets that

meet Slemp's design brief, you can contact him directly [email protected].

The Couple Who Knew How to Build a Plane: The Story of Maule Air, Inc. The plane is a small, rugged aircraft and it is built to goanywhere. It is the plane version of the Jeep. The company isMaule Air Inc. in Moultrie. This is the story about how this smallplane and company came to be.
