WhatbetterwayofshowcasingthecontributionofSPservicesthantheproviderarticlesinthisnewsletter.Theycelebrateawardsandindividualrecognitionandachievements;innovativeandcreativepartnershipinitiatives;thelearning,practicebasedexperienceandopportunitiesthathaveenabledtheevolutionofaserviceanddevelopmentofaservicecontinuum.

Ark Housing Association - “Trees and Hawks!” Ark Housing Homeless Services Unit at Roseville House, Belfast recently planted 105 trees received free from the Woodland Trust to improve their local area and help double native woodland cover.
Toshowthattreescanbringarangeofbenefitstobothlocalcommunitiesandwildlifeweheldatreeplantingevent.Ontheday,residentsandstaffwerejoinedbyourmanylocalneighboursandfriendsfromthecommunityincludingguestsfromPSNICommunityOfficers,NIHESupportingPeopleTeam,SimonCommunityandBarnado’sTuarCeathaProject.Thechildreninparticularhadafuntimebeinginvolvedintheplantingofsomeofthetrees.
KellyFoster,HomelessServicesManagersaid,“Treeplantingisafantasticandfunwayforustodosomethinglastinginourlocalarea.Wehopeourtreeswillhelpattractwildlifeandmakearealdifferencetoeveryonewhowillseethem.It’sincredibletothinkthatinjustfiveyears,ourtreeswillbeastallasus.Weinvitedmanypeoplefromthecommunitytocomealongandhelpusandthechildrenthoroughlyenjoyedit.”
VictoriaHodsonfromtheWoodlandTrustadded:“WearedelightedArkHousingAssociationisusingourfreetreeschemetoplantmoretreesatRosevilleHouse.Communitiesaretransformingtheirneighbourhoods,growingtheirownfruitsandfood,creatingshadeandshelter,andprovidingnewhomesforwildlife”.
“HundredsofcommunitiesacrosstheUKareholdingtreeplantingevents.Moreareencouragedtofollowthis
examplebyregisteringforafreetreepackforspringorautum2012fortheirlocalarea,aspartoftheTrust’sJubileeWoodsProject.”
StaffandresidentswerealsodelightedtowelcomeTerryTurkingtonfromFalconryServicesBelfastwhocametoourtreeplantingeventandgaveademonstrationwithhisbeautifulfemaleHarrisHawkSerena,whowasabighitwitheveryone.

MACS 21st Birthday Bash
In November 2011 MACS celebrated 21 years of work with young people in a housing context. We held a fantastic event in the Lyric Theatre which centred around young people, past and present, telling their own unique stories and sharing experiences of their time with MACS.
From Friends of Willowfield to MACS – how it all began
Webeganas‘FriendsofWillowfield’;aonehouseoneworkersetup,supporting5youngpeopleinasharedhouseinBelfasttoaddressthegapsinserviceprovisionforyoungpeoplewhentheyleftcare.AtthetimetherewasverylittlesupportprovidedtoyoungpeopleleavingcareapartfromBarnardosLeavingCareProject.Earlyonweestablishedanethosofa‘rightsbasedapproach’toyoungpeople’sparticipation.Thismeantthatyoungpeopledesignedandorganisedtherulesandconditionsforlivingintheirownhome.Westeeredawayfromlabellingtermssuchas‘hostel’and‘accommodationproject’andtriedtoensurethatexperiencesforyoungpeoplelivinginthehousewereasnormalandrealisticaspossible.
WiththeintroductionofTheChildren(NI)Order(1995)feweryoungpeoplefromacarebackgroundwerebeingreferredto‘FriendsofWillowfield’.Wedecidedtowidenourremitandoffersupporttothosedefinedas‘achildinneed’underthislegislation.ThereforethescopeandnumberofreferralstotheProjectincreasedandwechangedournametoMulhollandAfterCareServices.ThiswasinrecognitionofPhilMulhollandwhopioneeredaftercaresupportforyoungpeopleleavingWillowfieldChildren’sHomeinthe1980s.WiththeincreasingdemandforMACS,wesetupanewhousingprojectinBangorinthemid1990s.Thisprojecthada2yearlifespanandwasbasicallyadisaster!WedidtakealotoflearningfromthisProject;keylearningbeing‘don’t
putagroupofteenagersinahouseonaterracedstreetwithelderlyneighbours’!
In2000wemovedintoapurposebuiltprojectwith6flatsintheuniversityareaofBelfast.Asweembeddedthisproject,wecontinuedtoseekfeedbackfromyoungpeopleaboutserviceprovision.Youngpeoplewerehighlightingthelimitationsof9-5supportsandexpressingfeelingsofloneliness,isolationandlackofconfidence.In2000MACSestablishedtheMentoringServicetoprovideyoungpeoplewithvolunteersupport.TheMentoringrelationshipseekstobuildanddevelopsocialnetworks,toencourageyoungpeopletofollowtheirdreamsandaspirationsandtooffercontinuityofsupportindoingtheeverydaysocialactivitieswealltakeforgranted.In2003,weestablishedourthirdservice,FloatingSupport,withteamsnowbasedinBelfastandDownpatrickprovidingsupporttoyoungpeopleinbothruralandurbanareas.
Currentlyweprovidesupportforupto300youngpeopleayear.SomanychangeshaveoccurredovertheyearsforMACS.Wehavegrownfromprovidingleavingandaftercaresupportinonesmallsharedhouseto3services(Housing,MentoringandFloatingSupport)coveringtheEasternBoardarea.Wechangedournameagainforathirdtimein2011(whosaidwehaveidentityproblems!)toMACSSupportingYoungPeople.
Vision and Mission Statement
Wehavejustlaunchedourstrategicplanfor2011–2015.OurVision,MissionandValueshavebeenrevampedbyyoungpeople,makingthemclearlymoreyoungpeoplefriendlyandrelevant.Ourexcellentnewvision‘LifeisGR8foryoungpeople’andmissionstatement‘Providing support to young people who have not had a fair deal’,havepurposelymovedawayfromemotivetermssuchas‘atrisk’or‘vulnerable’asouryoungpeoplefeltthatthesetermsweretoolabelling.
Young People’s Participation Strategy
Inaddition,wehavecreatedamoreformalisedapproachtopurposefuluserinvolvementthroughourYoungPeople’sParticipationStrategy(2011–2015).Thisincludesyoungpeopleat,BoardorDirectorlevel,strengtheningmechanismsforyoungpeoplesinvolvement,employing4careexperiencedyoungpeopleon3yearcontractstodevelopparticipation(BigLotteryfunded),anannualcelebrationofyoungpeople’sideas(YoungPeople’sOscarNight)andincreasingthenumberofyoungmenparticipatingintheorganisation.

MACSbelievesthatpurposefulinclusionandinvolvementofyoungpeopleshouldbeattheveryheartofwhatwedo.Itextendswellbeyondthe‘formalities’ofparticipatingatanorganisationallevel,andcruciallyshouldpromoteyoungpeoplehavingchoiceandinputintotheirownlivesanddecisionmakingonadailybasis,particularlywhenitcomestorisktaking.Weaspiretoenableyoungpeopletodevelopandmaintainasupportnetworkthatispositiveforthemanduponwhichtheycanrely,nurtureandexpand.Wewant‘lifetobeGR8foryoungpeople’.For further information:KateMartin,FloatingSupportServicesManagerMACSTel:02890313161Email:[email protected]
Homecare PeripateticSupport ServiceHomecare’s Peripatetic Service was launched in October 2010 and is funded by Supporting People and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. It supports 20 adults across Belfast who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, offering a three tier model of housing, support and care to people with multi-complex issues including mental health, addictions, learning disability and physical health and disability.
Theprimaryaimoftheserviceistoprovidecareandsupporttopeopletoenableindependentlivingandsustainedtenancies,‘breakingthecycle’ofrecurringhomelessness,repeatadmissionstoA&Eandlongtermhospitaladmissions.
Toaccesstheservice,adultscaneitherbereferredbytheNIHEorBelfastHealthandSocialCareTrust.
How it works
Theserviceoffersonetoonesupporttoclientsforaminimumof3hoursperweekoveralongtermperiod(2+years)toassistwith:
• householdroutines• moneymanagement• familyandsupportnetworks• housing• substancemisuseand• training/education/employmentopportunities.
Inarecentclientsatisfactionsurvey(2011)75%ofclientsratedthesupportserviceoverallasexcellentand25%ofourclientsasverygoodorgood.Oneofourclientstoldus:
‘Ithasbeenverygoodmeetingwithmysupportworkereveryweek.Ithasgivenmesomethingtolookforwardto,tohaveachatwithmysupportworkerandhelpmeresolveanyproblemsthatI’mhaving.IhavenoneedtoworryanymorebecauseIknowmysupportworkerwillbetheretohelpmegetthroughit.’
RecentlywewerealsodelightedtohavebeenawardedaLevelBfromtheSupportingPeopleQAF2assessment.
Case studyMissAhascomplexissuesincludingmentalhealth,physicalhealth,addictionandhomelessness.
ShewasreferredtoHomecarePeripateticServicesforsupporttowardsmaintaininghertenancyinasupportedhousingunit.ThetenancysubsequentlybrokedownduetohercontinueddrugmisuseandMissAwasmovedtotemporaryaccommodationinHomecarehousing.
Servicesprovidedinclude;
Housing:Independentself-contained,furnishedaccommodation(inpartnershipwithNIHE).Care:Adomiciliarycarepackagetoassistwithpersonalcareneeds3timesperweek.Support:2-3hoursofsupportonadailybasisaroundmanagingprescriptionmedicationappropriately;reducingsubstancemisuse;managingfinances;accessingappropriatepermanenthousing;reducingtheriskofharmtoself;accessingspecialistservices;independentlivingskills(personalcare,appropriaterelationshipsandsafety);addressingphysicalhealthneeds.
Theclientfindsitdifficultatpresenttomaintainpositiveoutcomeswithoutintensivesupport.However,sheengagesextremelywellwiththeserviceandhasagenuinedesiretoovercomecurrentdifficultiestoworktowardsapositivefuturelivingindependently.Looking to the future
HomecareiscurrentlyworkingwithCedarFoundationtoshareanddevelopourexperiencesineffectiveoutcomemeasurementstrategies.
WearealsopleasedtoannouncetheopportunityforstudentsocialworkerstocompletetheirPracticeLearningOpportunity(PLO)asanessentialpartoftheBSc(Hons)DegreeinSocialWork.ThefirststudentwillcommencetheirPLOinJanuary2012withtheBelfastteam.

Root Soup BelfastRoot Soup is a partnership between Open Door Housing Association and L’Arche Belfast, who provide services for people who have a learning disability. Since September 2010 we have been cooking soups and baking breads together at our twice weekly ‘Soup Lunches’.
OnthesurfaceRootSoupisaboutgrowingandpreparingvegetablesandmakingorganicsoupsandbreads.Butwe’remuchmuchmorethanthat.RootSoupisasocialenterprisethatinvolvespeoplewhohavelearningdifficultiesandpeoplewhoarehomelessworkingtogethertolearnandgrow.
Ouroverallvisionisthat,throughpartnershipandbysharingourresourcesandexpertise,RootSoupwillbecomeadynamicsocialenterprisethatispartofanoverall‘FieldtoFork’initiative,offeringtrainingandemploymentopportunitiesacrossthefoodchaini.e.growing,preparationandcatering.
Ouraimistoenhancetherelationshipbetweenpeoplewithdisabilities,peoplewhoarehomelessandtherestofoursociety.Inaworldwheremanypeoplefeelisolated,afraidanddespondentwearecreatingafuturefilledwithhopeandasocietywhereeveryonemattersandcanmakeadifference.

TherearemanypeoplethatmakeupthefullRootSoupTeam.WehaveaRootSoup‘gardenmaster’,kitchentrainer,
co-ordinatorandtraineesworkingalongsideoneanothercreatingfriendship,community,homegrownvegetables,soups,breadsanddesserts.
ThetraineeshavegotsomuchoutofRootSoupandhaveallgainedconfidence,learningandskills,aswellasmakingfriends.

Coca Cola ‘Celebratory’ Award win for Belfast Central Mission
BCM (Belfast Central Mission) was awarded €10,000 in the recent Coca-Cola 125 Years Celebratory ‘Thank
You Fund’ that donated a total of €125,000 to non-profit community, voluntary and charitable organisations across Ireland. They were one of only three organisations based in Northern Ireland to receive an award at a ceremony held in Dublin in November.
BCM’sHousingSupportforYoungPeopleproject(basedinArmagh/Dungannonareas)madethefinal45outofover600submissionsfromcharitiesandwereoneof15winnersofacashgrantofeither€5,000or€10,000.
BCMDirectorBrianBurnssaiditwaswonderfultoseeBCMwinthismoneyforoneoftheirprojects,especiallyagainstsuchgreatcompetition.HethankedtheirsupporterswhovotedforthemonFacebookandalsothejudgingpanelforseeingthebenefitsfortheserviceusersintheArmagh/Dungannonareas.
Theprojectbenefitingfromthisawardaimstohelpvulnerableyoungpeopleintheareaadjusttoindependentliving,givingthemsupport,providingbasichouseholditems,offeringbudgetinghelp,cookeryassistanceandhealthadvice.Eachserviceuserwhoisreferredtotheprojectwillbeprovidedwitha‘KickOff’’packwithmanyofthebasicandessentialhouseholditemswhicharerequiredwhensettinguphome.
Themoneywillalsobeusedaspartoftheon-goingLITE&IGNITEhomeheatingincentivewherebyserviceusersareencouragedtoregularlybudgetfortheirownhomeheatingcostsandasanaddedbonustheprojectwillcontributeupto£50perperson.Thisisahugelybeneficialschemeandgreatlyreceivedbytheserviceusers.
InthesechallengingtimesBCMisexcitedtobeawardedsuchafinancialsumandhopesthatduringtheir125thanniversaryin2014theycangivesomethingbacktothecommunitylikeCocaColahasdoneduringits125years.

Justice Champions Award for Women’s Aid campaigner
Rosemary Magill, a tireless campaigner for victims of domestic violence has been crowned one of three Northern Ireland Justice Champions by Justice Minister David Ford at a ceremony at Parliament buildings.
RosemaryMagill,Women’sAid,hasbeenrecognisedformakinganimportantcontributiontoenhancingtheservicesforvictimsofdomesticabuse.RosemaryhelpedtodeveloptheMulti-AgencyRiskAssessmentConference’spilotinNorthernIrelandandalsoplayedapivotalroleinthelaunchoftheWhiteRibbonCharterforwhichsheengenderedthecommitmentfromeveryMLAtosignthepledge‘Nevertocommit,condone,orstaysilentaboutviolenceagainstwomen’.
David Ford said:
“The Justice in the Community Awards bring together people from across Northern Ireland, from different backgrounds and different walks of life, who share the same goal – making their communities safer.
All of them work tirelessly, often away from the glare of publicity, to help others and we should never take their investment in making a difference for granted.
We owe all the champions and everyone who gives up their time to make our communities safer a huge debt of gratitude”.
Thefirst‘JusticeintheCommunityAwards’werelaunchedinJune2011.Some58nominationswerereceivedandaswellasthethreeJusticeChampions,fivehighlycommendedawardswerealsopresented.
ThenominationswereconsideredbyanindependentjudgingpanelconsistingofBaronessMayBlood,WendyOsborne,VolunteerNowandDrMichaelMaguire,ChiefInspectorofCriminalJustice.TheJusticeChampionseachreceivedcommemorativecrystalandanawardtothevalueof£500forequipmentorservicestobenefittheirlocalcommunity.
RosemaryalsoreceivedanMBEintheNewYear’s2012HonoursListNorthernIrelandforherworkwithWomen’sAid.

Big Lottery Award for Belfast and Lisburn Women’s Aid Belfast and Lisburn Women’s Aid have been awarded £900,000 from the Big Lottery Improving Futures Programme which provides funding to improve the lives and opportunities of children living in families with multiple and complex needs.
ThisprojecttacklingdomesticviolenceisthefirstofitskindinNorthernIreland.Itwillpromoteaninnovativeinter-agencyapproach,enablingearlierinterventionandprevention.TheProjectpartnersareBelfast&LisburnWomen’sAid(Lead),BelfastHealth&SocialCareTrust,SouthEasternHealth&SocialCareTrustandNorthDown&ArdsWomen’sAid.
AnewWomen’sAidteamwillworkalongsidesocialworkersinsevengatewayteams,thesinglepointofcontactandentryforallnewfamilyandchildcarereferralstosocialservicesinandbeyondBelfast.Theteamwillenableaco-ordinatedearlyinterventionresponseacrossalllevelsofrisk,inparticularfocussingonchildrenandmotherswhoseneedshavebeenassessedaslowriskbysocialservicesandrequiringnofurtherstatutoryintervention.Theteamwillincludeahealthvisitorwhowillassistinprovidingapathwaytoholisticandspecialisedservicesforthefamily.
Key features of the project:
• Forthefirsttime,Women’sAidworkerswillbeco-locatedwithHealthandSocialCareTrustprofessionalsatarangeoflocations,coveringasignificanturbanandruralpopulationandgeographicalarea;
• Childrenandmotherswillhaveimmediateaccesstotailoredsupportandsafetyservicesatthepointofreferralandassessmenttomitigatetheimpactofdomesticviolence;
• Throughone-to-onesupport,counsellingandspecialiseddomesticviolencegroupworkprogrammes,motherswillbuildtheircapacitytosafeguardtheirchildrenbyunderstandingthedynamicsoftheabuseandtheeffectsontheirchildren.Thisinterventionincreaseswomen’sconfidence,self-esteemandresilience,enablingthemtomakegooddecisionsforthemselvesandtheirchildren;
• Inparallel,specialistserviceswillmeetchildren’sneedsandhelpthemfeelsafeandsupported;
• Theneedformultipleagencycontactandsupportwithfamilieswillbereduced;
• Inthelong-term,theprojectwillexploredevelopingasustainablecomprehensivemulti-agencyteamasanintegratedmodelofpracticeacrossalloftheTrustareas;
• 1060familiestobesupportedbytheproject;
• Lengthofproject3years.
‘Domesticviolencehasasignificanteffectonthehealthandwell-beingofwomenandtheirchildren,resultinginseriousphysicalinjuryandemotionalharmandevendeath.ItisasignificantfeatureinsocialworkcaseloadandinreferralsmadetotheHealthTrustsGatewayteamssaidPatriciaLyness,Managementco-ordinator.‘We are confident that this innovative model of work willl show good outcomes for children and their mothers’.
ThemostrecentPSNIstatistics,fromApril2010toMarch2011,showtherewereover23,000incidentsandover9000recordedcrimeswithadomesticmotivation,whileitisestimatedthatthereareover32,000childrenlivingwithdomesticviolencehere.
Carol Diffin, Children’s Services Manager from the Belfast Health Trust, and Mary Quinn, Sector Manager Safeguarding from the South Eastern Health Trust said:‘Having worked with Women’s Aid over many years, this project is an opportunity to work together from the point of entry into the Belfast Health Trust and the South Eastern Trust’s social services Gateway teams. This will ensure the earliest intervention for victims of domestic violence, including the children, to access a range of supportive services which keep them physically safe and emotionally secure.’
