WHO PAINTED THE PRADO’S COLOSSUS?In fact this is one of the most famous paintings in the “Prado” Museum, but since the end of 2008, “The Colossus” has been attributed to one of the followers of Goya, not to the master himself. The last month, Carlos Foradada, outstanding spanish professor, had published a paper in the Asociación Aragonesa de Críticos de Arte (the Association of Aragonese Art Critics) in which he arguing that the real master of the work is Goya. Is it the end of the debates about who is the real painter of “The Colossus”? Nobody knows. We’ll see...

THE MUNCH’S WORKS

An unique glass museum, which will occupies an area of 1100 square meters in Oslo will become a home for the world‘s largest collection of works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, as „The Guardian” informs. The decision to build the museum was taken after four years discussions, and the project was made by spanish architecture studio Herreros Arquitectos. According to draft plans, the museum scheduled to be open in 2018, and for its overall construction will be invested 178 million pounds.

The current Munch Museum was established in 1963, when was celebrated the centenary of his birth. It keeps to nowadays several thousand of his paintings, drawings and sketches. The majority of Munch’s works can not be displayed due to lack of space. Exhibition area of the new museum will be a 4 - fold higher than the former one

cREATIVE REVELATIONS

Your style of creation is unique and highly distinctive, what provoked its birth and its clarifi cation in your creativity?

In the early period of my work I mainly recreated scenes from the Bulgarian culture and folklore. The real reason

and the occasion for the birth of my artistic style was a provocation of an art - dealer who claimed that painting Bulgarian lifestyle is too

commercialized and mass. All this provoked me start working on a technique that had existed only in my

thoughts and ideas till those moment. For a year and a half I was clearing and perfecting this technique, using the principle of „trial -

error“, then I stepped to the creation of my fi rst solo exhibition entitled “The Glagolitic Alphabet And Proto – Bulgarian

Runes”, which was inaugurated in 2008 on an emblematic for all the Bulgarians date 0 The 1-st of November – The Day of the National Leaders!!!

You are one of the few Bulgarian artists who are honored to have a personal traveling exhibition. For the last 4 years the exhibition “A Glagolitic Alphabet And Proto – Bulgarian Runes” was exposed on many emblematic places for the Bulgarian culture and art throughout the country, it will be opened in many more interesting places

I’ve always liked the works that have nested sense in them.

in Bulgaria and the interest in it is growing steadily. Tell us how the idea for this exhibition was born and what message you want to send through it to your audience?I’ve always liked the works that have nested sense in them. If through them people can learn something new and to enrich themselves, that is better. so I decided to create the exhibition „A Glagolitic Alphabet and Proto - Bulgarian runes“ and through it to my audience back in time, and with this all to make them feel proud inheritors of a great nation. Thus, in 2008 the place tat I chose for its fi rst offi cial opening was not accidental - it was the Hall of the sofi a seminary. There the exhibition was opened with a revival of the Kubrat’s Covenants which he bequeathed to his sons and the future generations. The revival was prepared and presented by members of the society „TRADITION“. It was an unforgettable experience for me. And then the exhibition took on its way across

the country and till now it has been exposed to 12 iconic places for Bulgarian Art and Culture, visiting 8 Bulgarian cities. The invitations to visit new places are still raining over us. What more can I want for my collection of works?! ...

The unique in your art biography is that you are the only author with two traveling exhibitions, the second of them is the exhibition „Glagolitic Alphabet“ – the singular personal exhibition from the traveling worldwide collections of the Ministry of Foreign Aff airs. Please, give us some details about this important event in your life. After the implementation of the project „Cyrillic Alphabet“ of the Ministry of Foreign Aff airs in 2007, on the occasion of the accession of Bulgaria to the European union, which included 24 Bulgarian artists and their works, and after the presentation of my exhibition „A Glagolitic Alphabet

This exhibition has a special charisma, its creative specifi cs and carries huge creative charge. Established in 2008, it was exhibited for the fi rst time in the Aula of sofi a seminary. Following its presentation there, the exhibition was invited to visit the Eu Information Centre in Bulgaria, then in 2010 it was offi cially opened in the Ministry of Education, Youth and science personally by the Minister Mr sergey Ignatov on the occasion of May 24 celebration, where it was exhibited according to his invitation. A day after the Celebration of National Leaders in the same year it was opened in the representative showrooms of the Artistic society in Plovdiv, where many representatives of the local business, political and cultural elites felt the magic of the Glagolitic Alphabet and the Proto - Bulgarian runes. The last opening for that year was held on December 15, 2011, in the Regional History Museum in Pazardjik. since the 13th of February 2012 the exhibition was a guest of the Bulgarian National Radio. The opening there created a great interest by the side of the public and medias. On the 19th of April it was opened in the History Museum in Blagoevgrad, on the 5th of May was exhibited in Protobulgarian village „Fanagoria“ near Varna. On the 4th of July it was opened in the museum „Ancient Nessebar“ and on the 10th of October was introduced in the iconic historic town of Batak. The latest opening of the exhibition took place on April 8, 2013 at the Art Gallery of shumen as a part of the project for transform the city into a cultural capital of Bulgaria. In May, the exhibition will be guest of the National Museum of Education in the city of Gabrovo. The visit will be followed by many more presentations in the country and the world.

Mysticism, energy messages and coded wisdom, that had survived through time and space, to happens Here and Now – so this is the way which the new cycle of works by the artist Pavlin Petrov sounds like. . “Code 333 Concentration” is a kind of collection of art jewelries for connoisseurs. In the limited space of these small works is concentrated the enormous power and

strength of the eternal messages, translated into signs and symbols from many places around the world. Love, Wisdom, Luck, Prosperity, Abundance and a Joy of Life become vivid and fill in with a new meaning, through the unique combination of shapes, relieves, colors and materials in combination with stylized symbols from different cultures and eras in the world. They catch

the eye, impress strongly and turn immediately works from this cycle to a real masterpieces with great charisma and appeal, worthy to fill any fine and valuable collection. The encoded in works messages overcome the spaces of the already released from the frame webs, and trigger unexpected thoughts, feelings and emotions in those, who are in touch with them. Protection,

enhancement of positive vibration, harmonization of the energies within and around us, and all this combined with the constant pleasure of touching one modern and in the same time ancient aesthetics. And after all this another proof of the unique and inimitable style of the famous painter Pavlin Petrov, which affirms him

once again as a recognizable artist, always true to himself. Art jewelries from the collection “Code 333 Concentration” are a wonderful gift with which you can please yourself, or to say much without any words to those, who are special and beloved for you. Because the valuable people deserve valuable symbols of love and respect, just like the jewelry art messages of Pavlin Petrov!

wore diff erent signs and symbols like jewelry for diff erent purposes. Often with them people expressed their religious and group affi liation. sometimes these symbols were used for protection, reinforcement of the positive vibrations and a praying for help to the unseen forces, which we call today mascots. That provoked me to recreate these characters in intentionally small spaces of my works, with which to focus their energy charge and to resemble jewels and amulets, which they symbolize. All said by me reasonably determines my art -cycle „Code 333 Concentration“ as Art

Jewelry Collection. This art – cycle includes 33 works, united into 11 logical triples, and because each of them carries the encoded message of the symbol, which was displayed on it, I chose for the title of the art – cycle a name „Code 333 Concentration“. A little secret is that each work costs only 333 BGN. The price of the works is symbolic and it is a kind of a friendly gesture to my admirers.

The number of your admirers grows constantly. The interest in your art is great. If your admirers fail in trying to get an art - work from your upcoming exhibition,

how can they do that? There are several ways in which everyone can get a piece of my art. The fi rst is the individual orders of paintings, which I create for a specifi c person, complying with the rules, laid down by him, like size, colors and signs. An interesting and memorable way to get my work is when you have the desire and are invited to take part in my chamber exhibitions for a small circle of guests, who were especially invited for the event.

What are the new creative horizons for the look of the artist Pavlin Petrov? My creative plans for the near future include some interesting ideas about art - cycles, but I will put out some details only for those, on which I‘m working at the moment. The cycle is called „Circles“ and reproduces in a diff erent and memorable way characters from diff erent places around the world, which, closed in the space of the circle or containing circles in themselves, repeatedly amplifi ed their impact. The works from this cycle will be sent abroad. I’ve got some off ers for its exposure from several places around the world. A matter of time is to be decided where this exhibition will be exposed and opened.

How will you fi nish the sentence: „THE ART IS ...“?„ART Is THE DIVINE sPARK IN THE HuMAN sOuL!”

13

The circle – a symbol as simple as it is diverse in meanings and essences, interpreted again and again by diff erent authors in the Art. The projection of Life, that has no beginning and no end, the eternal thirst for improvement, the continuous striving for completeness, harmony, integrity, a unity with the Cosmos, the Divine realms and the Eternity. We can fi nd this universal form projected in our personal and social identity through the stamp, can recognize it in the halo of the saints, labeling with it our personal, intimate territory, available for few close people, beyond which is the immutability of Time and space, where we occur ourselves. Placed in

the sacred borders of the circle, all symbols, ritual signs and images gain immeasurably greater power and infl uence, increase their vibrations, complement the feeling of magic and charisma with which they are initially saturated. The Creation, the Creativity, the Protection and the constant Force of fi re complement the mystique, the impact and the imagery of the circle. The Art – cycle “Circles” by Pavlin Petrov is a beautiful and unforgettable trip in diff erent ages, ethnicities and cultures around the world, predetermined by the trajectory of the circle, with the only one promise – to give you the unforgettablemoments, spent with it!

Engagement, wedding, votive, stamped, symbol of strength and power, of love and belonging, the ring is as holy as it is simple at look subject. But in the mystery of its circle are locked countless unsolved mysteries and funny stories, some of which we will fi nd

out together right now.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE RINGsome hearts are diamonds, as was said in a beautiful song, but some rings have diamonds, which make them unbelievably expensive. If you do not know already, we must admire that the most expensive ring in the world has a blue diamond on it. The Chopard Blue Diamond Ring is the ring that makes any other diamond ring look small and inappreciable. Except the enormous, oval-shaped blue diamond, that unique ring also has diamond shoulders and an 18 k white gold band, which was paved with diamonds too.The jewelry specialist say that the blue diamond is among the most expensive diamonds in the world. It is found among boron deposits, from whence it derives its shade. This particular gem weighs is nine carats. The world’s most expensive ring is valued at $16.26 million, enough to put a dent in the wallets of even the wealthiest persons.

THE BIGGEST RING IN THE WORLDMay be you still do not know, but there is a big golden ring, that nobody’s hand can wear – this is the biggest ring in the world. Kanz Jewelry has been displaying this ring, which weigh is 63.856 kg, and it’s made out of 21 carat gold. The value of the ring has mul-tiplied several times over the years, according to the gold price during the years till now. The value of the ring was $547,000, when it was made in 2000, but now it costs over $3 million. Thе unique jewelry was created by Taiba, a great Arabian jewel-lery maker. This great piece of yellow metal was displayed with a Guinness Book of World Records Certificate.According to this certificate the world’s largest gold ring is man-ufactured for Gold and Jewelry LLC, saudi Arabia and is studded with 5.1kg worth of precious stones from signity Middle East and was supported by the World Gold Council.

THE STORY FOR THE LOST RINGIt 2006 Pope Benedict lost his Fisherman’s Ring. The gold ring, depicting st. Peter casting a big net to catch some fi sh, fell off from the Holy Father’s fi nger while the Pope was shaking hands with hundreds of the faithful in his meetings with them. It had hap-pened three times just for some weeks. some observational people reported that few people had thought about keeping the ring into their pockets, but, after some fearsome thoughts about spending eternity in burning Hell, they reconsidered and just gave the Pope back his precious ring. But at the end something went terribly wrong. When the ring fell off for the third time, no one stepped forward to return it to its owner. Pope Benedict was shaking hands with a large group of school children just before the ring went missing. Who kept it for himself nobody knows! Or may be it is still somewhere over there hidden from people’s eye?! Who knows it for sure?!

ART cOLLEcTIONS

Have you ever been in Pazardjik? And have you ever

visited the Art Gallery in the town? If it’s so, then you already know that one of the iconic and memorable collections in the gallery is the „Portrait“ collection. It has about 500 portraits and self-portraits, mainly covering the time span from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth

century. With the recent additions to the gallery fund it proceeded boldly into the new century. The collection consists of paintings, graphic and sculptural works, which filled with their presence one of the gallery’s halls. Last year this hall was named posthumously to the gallery’s first director – the artist Tsvetan Radulov.

Named to one of the most - prominent Renaissance

Bulgarian artists - stanislav Dospevski, the Gallery in Pazardzhik (a town in Bulgaria) has one of the biggest portrait collections in the Balkan Peninsula. Among the pearls of this unique collection impress the „self-portrait with a medal“ by stanislav Dospevski and one of its undoubted masterpieces - a portrait of his sister Domnika Lambreva, often defined by art historians and art critics as the Bulgarian Mona Lisa.

In this collection find out their logical and natural place some works by the members of the Bulgarian Art school from the early twentieth century. Among them unobtrusively but clearly stand out the self-portrait of George Mashev, the airy and filled with light lady’s portraits of Elisaveta Konsulova – Vazova, a close relative of the poet Ivan Vazov, and the visages, reproduced by Ilia Petrov and many other quality representatives of this period.

If we follow the timeline and the chronology of their creation, will be required for us to mention some portraits, created by one new generation of Bulgarian artists. Here we find out names of Zlatyu Boyadjiev, stoyan Venev, Nenko Balkanski, Ruska Marinova, Dora Boneva. Very distinctive

and noticeably warmer is the portrait by Nayden Petkov, from which is watching us engrossed and dreamy Violeta Gindeva, reincarnated in another new role.

Impossible for us is to miss authors like Kalina Taseva Luben Zidarov, Hristo stefanov, as long as the few representatives from the Plovdiv’s Group of 60‘s of the XX century, called the „The Plovdiv’s school of 60’s“, among whom stand out the names of Dimitar Kirov and Yoan Leviev.

Most - significant addition to this collection brings us back to the 80’s of the twentieth century. The reason is that most of the works in this collection supplement fund of the gallery during both General Art exhibitions, on which it is a host. They carried out respectively in 1984 and in 1988. In parallel with the significant expanding of this collection, reveal some new art streams, forms out a new generation of artists, line out some symbolic manifestations of unconventional arts, and comes in the fresh recruits to that wonderful collection of visages. This typical „diversity“ significantly presents in most portraits of this period. They are somehow different in interpretation and stylistic features, although they lack too „radical“ solutions, as

the current Director of the gallery – the young sculptor Leon Babachev says. According to his words here will be good to highlight the names of Vihroni Popnedelev and Thomah Trifonovski.

And that is not the all, but just a part of a unique constellation of images, which the Pazardjik’s gallerists will complement in the time ahead. And if you ever get the chance to visit Pazardzhik, do not forget to enjoy the Bulgarian Mona Lisa – Domnika, and to immerse yourself in a sea of beautiful and strange faces, which are engraved forever in the portraits of the City Art Gallery „stanislav Dospevski.“

What was the reason to go for art and when did this happen?I don’t remember when it started. Maybe in my childhood. My father was a real jack of all trades and he’s thought me many useful things. He didn’t have the possibility to deal with art. When I was younger, my work was in connection with industrial machines and I usually made artworks in my spare time. In the last 15 years I’ve lived only for my artworks.

If it is not possible and I couldn’t see the piece of my soul in the creation, it is not artwork anymore but only workpiece. What inspires you?I am a visual type of person and I can see the artwork in the raw material. It is a challenge and inspiration for me to fill lifeless materials with life. It is important for me to express myself in a creation. If it is not possible and I couldn’t see the piece of my soul in the creation, it is not artwork anymore but only workpiece.

What are the most - important facts from your art - biography that you want people to know about you?It is rare to work for order, but my works can be find in my Hungarian shop called MEsKA.

What are your future plans in art?I love doing what I do and would like to do it for a long time in my life....because it is the part of my life. I am going to try out new materials and techniques to discover a new part of my soul. It is important to show my art not only in Europe but overseas too and I hope my art could be the resource of joy for other people like it is for me.

nine unique masterpieces of antiquity

his is not a tale for untold treasures and magical kingdoms. This

is a story for a golden treasure which together with its beauty and exquisite craftsmanship hides many mystic secrets, unsolved mysteries and from years nourishes the imagination of many researchers, who had dared to unravel whose arms had carved all these fantastic and almost perfect form of the golden vessels. some historians say that the Panagyurishte treasure in fact

is a Thracian treasure, which dating brings us back to the end of the IV-th, early III - th century BC. It was discovered in 1949 by Deykovi brothers near Panagyurishte and that is why it was called Panagyuric.

In fact, a treasure is a beautiful golden service with rich and very interesting decorations and ornaments. scientists suppose that it was used for banquets or for religious sacraments and rituals related to Thracian mythology and rituality. The Panagyurishte’s treasure consists of 9 vessels,

which total weight exceeds 6 kg and all of them are made of pure gold. The unknown ancient master had formed by 4 from the rhytons as heads or front body parts of animals such as sheep, goat and fallow deer. On the top part of the rhytons were depicted scenes and characters from ancient Greek mythology such as a feast in honor of the glorious wedding of Dionysus with the Cretan princess Ariadne. Three of the vessels are priceless jugs, which at the bottom are shaped like the head of Amazon

and stalks resemble centaurs - mythological creatures with the body of animals and human heads. Very impressive is the manufacture of phiale - shallow bowl-shaped tray. On the phiale are engraved fine four concentric circles with 24 prominent ornaments in each. The figures in three of the circles are shaped like black men‘s heads, while those in the center are acorns.

Тhe most impressive as a craftwork, form and decoration is the large amphora. The handles are shaped like fighting centaurs, and the two holes for pouring the wine, which are located in the base of the container - like nigger heads. Between black man’s heads is recreated an impressive scene - Hercules as a child struggles with the serpent.

Experts determined that collection of ancient gold objects as an indispensable and valuable

source of information about daily life, traditions and customs of the Thracians, their relationship with the Hellenic culture and the similarity of their beliefs. There are several hypotheses for the occurrence of these unique vessels, but no one of them has its official confirmation. According to the first of the hypotheses, the vessels were made in the town Limpsak (Hellenic colony, located on the southern coast of the Black sea, Turkey today). The second, and - more popular recently assumption is that service was made in a local goldsmith workshop located near Panagyurishte.

In 2012 were made two perfect copies of the treasure of pure gold. The first was exhibited at the Museum of History in Panagyurishte and the other - in the halls of the National History Museum in sofia. The originals

continue their journey across Bulgaria and around the world. Till now the Golden treasure of Panagyurishte was exposed in more than 40 countries worldwide.

Many researchers still are seeking the truth about the origin of this priceless pearl of Bulgarian historical heritage and maybe someday the will fi nd it, but until then we are still have the chance to enjoy these unique ancient masterpieces, that keeps alive the memories for the past and the peoples, who lived in these places.

22

Who or what had helped you to discover your passion about photography? In 2004 on my PADI Advanced course in Thailand, my dive instructor leant me a camera for 2 dives to take underwater after I passed my course. I thought it would be better if I can dive and capture what I saw. After that Thailand trip I bought a small compact underwater camera and housing right away and have never stopped since. Later on when I became more

experienced in diving and underwater photography I was more and more interested in macro life. As the life is so small it can be a challenge to get it right and lots of them are so colourful and I am excited every time I dive. so I would say 80% of my underwater photos will be macro photos. What inspires you when you stand behind the lens?I am kind of a traditional underwater photographer, always inspired by interesting subjects, perfect lighting

Ken ThOnGPIlaart in depths

Ken Thongpila is an Australian-Thai, living and working in Sydney. He is an award-winning photographer featured in diving magazines and websites. His most recent award was a Gold Medal in the Macro Swimming Category in the underwater pho-tography.com website, the longest running underwater photography contest. He also won the Best DSLR Macro photo, Best Diver Photo and Best Nudibranch Photo from the Sundive Byron Bay Shoot-out 2012 competition, which is one of the best,

biggest and toughest competitions that is held in Australia. His passion is macro photography and his favourite critter is the Nudi-branch. Last year he created the Underwater Macro Photographers Facebook Group, which quickly became popular with the underwater photography community and has more than 4,000 members from all over the world. The aim of the group is “learning from each other” and sharing ideas and tips on how to take better macro photos.

and composition. Every time I am behind the lens I will try to get it right within 5-7 shots so the marine life will not get disturbed by my strobes too much. What is your greatest achievement and what is the most valuable acknowledgment that you have received as a photographer?I would say, the creation of the underwater Macro Photographer Facebook Group last year is my greatest achievement. I did not think it would become so popular for the underwater photographer’s community. I have learnt so much on this group and it is so rewarding when I hear that this group can help the members learn and improve their underwater photography skills. My most valuable acknowledgment was probably winning a Gold Medal in the Macro swimming

Category from over 10,000 from the underwaterphotography.com website. From whom you’ve learned the most important things in your work as a photographer?Early on I would have said some of the underwater photographers who wrote the underwater photography books but now I would say our underwater Macro Photographer Facebook Group members. There are so many great underwater photographers on the group and we are sharing our secrets of how to take great shots. Most important of all, it is free. What is your most beautiful photographic memory and with which photography it is connected? It was when I shot a Red Rockcod Yawning in Nelson Bay, Australia. I have been diving in Nelson Bay for the past 5 years and I had never seen one yawn before. But on that day I was shooting this Rockcod on a

sponge and I was just about to press the second shot when it suddenly yawned, so I captured it exactly like it was my dream shot. I would say everything needed to be connected between the right subject, right moment and right camera setting. What the photography means to you?Photographing macro subjects underwater is a kind of meditation, it

is relaxing when I dive and surrounded with beautiful marine life. I am always excited in the anticipation of seeing something fantastic that I have never seen before. I love sharing my photos with my friends and family and I have made lots of friends all over the world. I feel proud when I see my photos in a magazine or on someone’s home or office wall. I am glad that I can show how wonderful the underwater world is through my lens.

“I see everyThInG as a potential material”

Kate Cusack is an artist with incredible imagination that provokes her to invent new shapes and explanations of used or already unusefull items. She dare to change the acceptation of some materials and to show another point of view, another apply and to give them a very different meaning. BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, freelance practice and numerous brave experimentations – that is the background of Kate’s zipper jewelry.

What was your reason to choose the zipper for the main material of your creations?I saw an old plastic slipcover that was being thrown away that had a giant zipper all the way around it. I cut the zipper from the yellowing plastic, brought it home, bleached it, and knew it should be something more than a closure for a plastic slip cover. I think in this case, it was really the size of the zipper that caught my eye—and the fact that it was such a long zipper. I looked at that zipper and saw a faceted piece of metal. Naturally, it reminded me of jewelry.Because the metal teeth are attached to a fabric edge, the zipper is a material that is both rigid and flexible. I enjoy the contrast between the whimsical shapes I create using the zipper and its harsh metal teeth.

What provoke you to use such common household items in your work?I see everything as a potential material that can be transformed into something exciting. When I see one item repeated in large quantity or in an extreme size, I start to see it in its very basic visual form. I begin to make associations based on shape, color and texture and I am freed from traditional

restrains about what that item or material should be used for. There is a seemingly endless supply of household items because they’re intended to be used and then disposed of. When the material is not precious, the pressure to create something “meaningful” and “special” disappears and the creativity has free reign.Another issue that is very important to me, is the notion of humor and lightheartedness. I think that may be this is another explanation for why I work with unusual and humble materials. I like to create polished, elegant work (whether jewelry or headdresses, etc) that a viewer can appreciate in a serious way, but then when the viewer notices whatever the object is made out of, it surprises them and brings a smile to their face.

Surely you have your own story behind the certain about blossoming zipper pin? How that flower from zipper inspire you to create entire line of zipper jewelry?I made my first Zipper Pin in 2002. I had recently finished designing and creating costumes for a children’s dance-theater company and I got my hands on bags and bags of zippers. At that point in

KATE CUSACK

Page 25: Art мanager 7 1st issue

25

“I see everyThInG as a potential material”

fashion, pins and brooches were very in style. I was originally inspired by the idea of the Chanel flower, and thrifty/resourceful decoration of fashion from the 1940s. I made a Zipper Pin for myself and wore it on my jacket. I was freelancing in the visual merchandising department of a big company at the time and the woman who I worked for, admired my pin. I made the second Zipper Pin as a gift for that woman who’d hired me when the project was complete, as a „thank you”. After about two years of making the Zipper Pins exclusively people asked for necklaces. so on a summer break, I made my first collection of Zipper Necklaces. In the summer of 2008, people asked for bracelets, and I answered with a collection of Zipper Bracelets and Zipper Band Cuffs.

There is something magical in creation of the zipper jewelry. Can you explain the process of that magical creation? When I begin a new piece, sometimes I work directly from a sketch, and other times, I sketch three-dimensionally on a dress form. Whether the idea

starts two dimensionally or three dimensionally, all of the Zipper Necklaces are shaped on a dress form. This ensures that the piece will relate to the body. sometimes my designs are inspired by the zipper, itself, and other times, I imagine the design and then choose the right zipper for the project.

Is recycling an important aspect of your zipper jewelry? The Zipper Jewelry is not made from zippers exclusively for the sake of being “recycled.” I enjoy the idea of it being eco-friendly, but the majority of my zippers have never been used before and are purchased in the garment district. In my studio when I am making a piece, I do save all the scraps and often make new pieces of jewelry from discarded end-pieces. I like that idea of making use of everything.

Your artist statement mentions that you approach jewelry design as a visual artist rather than fashion designer. What is the difference?Because I see everything as an artist, it means I am freed up from certain constraints that typically come with certain professional approaches. I can see the material for what it is, what it “should” be used for, and then I can decide

how I want to re-imagine it. As a jewelry designer, I don’t set out to make a necklace with beads or sterling silver, but instead, I manipulate the zipper into shapes that are like beads, and I make a comparison between sterling silver and the base metals used in zippers.

I like to create polished

and elegant works!

In our team there are two splendidladies, they shared

their views on the uniquejewelry.

At the age of 12 Henry Jones started work for George Peacock his fi rst and only employer. Working six days a week, ten hours a day Henry Jones pasted labels on jam tins. At the age of 27, he purchased a share of the

A living piece of ancient history

hen you visit Veliko Tarnovo /Bulgaria/ for the fi rst time, the feeling of antiquity

and living history conquers your palpably. This is a town where the modern coexists in a natural kind of comfort with the material evidence of the enduring greatness of a nation. You‘ll need a preliminary plan or a guide, and suffi cient time to be able to enjoy all the sights of the town. Whatever else you miss, do not miss the unique audio - visual show „sound and light“ on the Tsarevets Hill. such performances are rare, in the world there are no more than three, and this is the only one on the Balkan Peninsula. Mysterious

and dramatic music, a fairy of colorful lights, laser beams, church bells and stone screen of an old fort intertwine and overfl ow in a living, pulsating tissue, recreating in unique way the glorious and tragic history of the second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 – 1393) and separated moments from the recent history of Bulgaria. The audio - visual show „sound and Light“ was introduced for the fi rst time in 1985 in honor of the 800th anniversary from the uprising of the Bulgarian Kings Assen and Peter. In the same year near the City Art Gallery was offi cially opened the monument of the Assen’s Kings. The monument is dedicated to the Bulgarian Kings

Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II, their great deeds and exploits. After this night fairy Tsarevets Hill is worth to be visited during the day. Partially recovered in the last century remains of walls, towers, public buildings, living proof of a unique fortifi cation system allow visitors to touch irrevocably past times and to transfer to a distant reality. In this architectural ensemble particularly the most important place is occupied by the patriarchal and the palace complex. Quarters of the Bulgarian kings were surrounded by many buildings that accommodate

cronies of the ruler and various administrative and offi ces buildings. On top of the hill is located a patriarchal church „Ascension“, surrounded by patriarchal complex, in which are housed the library, the scriptorium and the monks‘ cells. The temple was restored completely like an architecture style, but the interior is quite updated.Last February in the town was opened offi cially a Multimedia visitor center „Tsarevgrad Tarnov.“ Just like in the Museum for Wax Figures of Madame Tussauds, here dominate realistic images of people, who are not made of wax, but from a special silicone, which is often used in the movies. The museum complex has two fl oors and presents 29 sculptures of ancient Bulgarian rulers and ordinary people like craftsmen, monks and warriors. The

author of the concept for the complex is the sculptor Boris Borisov. In the area of Veliko Tarnovo there are many historical and cultural attractions, like the Konstantsaliev house, the Archaeological Museum, the Assen’s neighborhood, the City Art Gallery, the

House - Museum „Petko R. slaveykov“ the monument of Assen’s Kings, the samovodska street of crafts, the “Trapezitsa” hill, The inn of Hadji Nikoli and several churches, including “st. George”, „st. Demetrius of Thessaloniki“, „st. st. Peter and Paul „and recently

restored „st. Forty Martyrs“.Near the town you can fi nd an Architectural museum - reserve „Arbanassi“, the monastery „Holy Trinity“, the monastery of Transfi guration and the excavations of archaeological reserve „Nicopolis ad Instrum.“

People of this town are smiling and welcoming and it is beautiful here at any time of the year. But whatever I tell you, nothing can replace the memories that you will give to yourself when you visit personally Veliko Tarnovo.

All that started in early 1970‘s, when Wendy began a fabric designer and a potter. At the

same time, she studied painting at The Art Institute of Boston, and later she graduated The school of Visual Arts in New York City. In the 1980‘s she put herself in

the field of traditional watercolor illustration. In 1990 she received a proposal to take a teaching position in computer arts in the

undergraduate and the graduate level at The school of Visual Arts, as well as at Pratt Institute over the next ten years.

unfulfilled. she was looking for a new artistic outlet for her painting which was her first love. After doing many wall size murals and closet doors for commission, Wendy‘s ideas for painting on furniture emerged. They burst out with a great power in 2000, when she began creating beautifully designed and painted furniture. she began to experiment with copper, and as she noodled around with the metal, she came up with an embossing technique that satisfied her artistically, and gave her furniture the punch she was looking for. Wendy continues to experiment and to bring her discoveries to the furniture, maintaining a freshness that she demands of herself and her work. Wendy, having worked

in many media, including fabric, wood, metal, and clay, brings with her an understanding and a diversity into how home furnishing can blend, meld, and ultimately flow in creative and unique ways.

Wendy feels the earth as her real home. she is ecologically oriented person and very conscience of the well being of our planet. That is her reason to choose and to use only products that are made from non -threatened trees and recyclable products. she also wants to make it possible and easy for every person to enjoy the enriching and fun experience of having her furniture as a piece of art in their home. To be in touch with those, who want to possess her art furniture, Wendy established with the help of

her mother her own online shop, named “sTuDIO 78”. The art pieces, which she present there, reflect her deep belief in always keeping a positive outlook on life, and in encouraging growth in herself and in others, while staying in harmony both spiritually and economically, with her environment.

leOnard a. laUder gives away 78 artworks to

the people of New Yorka collection, which will transform the The metropolitan museum of art

A great donation will change a history of The Metropolitan Museum of Art forever.

According to the offi cial website of the Museum its director and CEO Mr. Thomas P. Campbell announced in the beginning of April that Leonard A. Lauder has given by his will his personal collection, including 78 works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris and Fernand Léger. The collection was defi ned by the specialists as one of the foremost collections of Cubism in the world. Mr. Campbell announced also that, in coordination with the gift, the Metropolitan Museum is establishing a new research center for modern art at the Metropolitan, which will be supported by a $22-million endowment funded by grants from Museum trustees and supporters, including Mr. Lauder. The Leonard A. Lauder Collection, distinguished by its high quality, clear focus, and defi ned depth, includes 33 works by Picasso, 17 by Braque, 14 by Gris, and 14 by Léger. There can be found great number of masterpieces and iconic works critical to the development of Cubism. Among the highlights of that incredible collection are: Picasso’s The scallop shell (“Notre avenir est dans l’air”), Braque’s Trees at L’Estaque, Léger’s Houses under the Trees and Gris’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother (1912).

His collection is distinguished by its high quality, clear focus, and defi ned depth.

35

“This is a gift to the people who live and work in New York and those from around the world who come to visit our great arts institutions.” -commented Mr. Lauder his incredible donation.

The Lauder Collection will be presented for the fi rst time at the Metropolitan Museum in an special exhibition, which will be opened in fall 2014. The exhibition will be co-curated by Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor in Hunter College and the Graduate Center in City university of New York, who has served as curator of the Lauder Collection for 26 years; and Rebecca Rabinow, Curator in the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art will be the fi rst center of its kind, dedicated exclusively to modern art within an such encyclopedic museum as Metropolitan is. It will serve and work as a leading center for scholarship on Cubism and modern art, proven for its intellectual rigor and range, and its resources, that will be available for wide study. under the auspices of the Center, the Metropolitan will

award four two-year fellowships annually for pre- and post-doctoral work and will invite senior scholars for residencies at the Museum. Through a program of lectures, study workshops, dossier exhibitions,

publications and others the Center will focus art-historical study and public attention on modernism generally and on Cubism in particular and make it more popular, known and famous.

ABOUT LEONARD LAUDER PHILANTHROPY

What do you think are the main qualities, which should possess any value collector? The real collectors are those aristocrats of the spirit, for

whom the touch with art is the inner necessity. For them it is a spiritual food, worship and hu-mility in front of the great and the important, a path toward

the knowledge and the eleva-tion. These people can spend many hours watching a work, their hearts can be filled with love and awe, and they can cry with tears of happiness. They can pay a lot of money for a pic-ture and be happy even though they know the market with its inexorable laws will never give them their money back. They wouldn’t sell for any price their collections. Collector of this kind is building himself with a very, very strong love, will, per-severance, daring, knowledge, honesty, willingness to depriva-tion and hard decisions, luck and intuition.

In the mid of April you’ve opened an extremely valuable exhibition with the masterpieces of contemporary Bulgarian art in Plovdiv. Presented paintings are just a small part from the important art heritage of the unique Bulgarian masters of the

brush, which you own. But how did it all begin? What provoked you to regard yourself in the deals of art collector?Even in my early adolescence I felt passion for books and art. Along with the adventure nov-els I delivered myself a pleasure with the study of biographies of great men, especially those people, who have created beau-ty, though their life was filled with difficulties and hardships. I’ve watched films about Leon-ardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Modigliani and dreamed to see their original works. Gradually I began to be interested in Bul-garian artists. At the beginning I was buying books and reproduc-tions. Later - graphics and draw-ings. I was over the moon with joy when I got a casual sketche

by Elijah Beshkov. At that time I received a folder with pictures, a gift from my aunt - intelligent and colorful woman, who loved me much. she was really a noble woman. I wasn’t concealing my collector‘s tendencies, because I felt them too personal. In early 1993 I met a writer in Haskovo, who’ve collected works by paint-ers. I bought from him several valuable paintings by Bulgarian artists and graphics by Western artists. so pictures and sculp-tures begin to increase, until one day my passions turned into a profession and lifestyle. In other words, I am a happy person!

Which piece of your collection has a particular emotional and sentimental value for you and why?

„Do I like a picture or do not, the only councilor is my heart and no one else!“ says the collector.

Page 38: Art мanager 7 1st issue

38

The first painting, made with oils, that I’ve bought from a contemporary artist was still life „Grandmother’s Peppers „, cre-ated in 1993 by Dima Petrova - a good artist from Haskovo. she drew a portrait of my grandpar-ents, with which she touched me deep. Dima was introduced to me by the writer, for whom I have already mentioned. Before that I’ve bought from him a „dry needle“ - „Old Man“ by Rem-brandt Van Rhine and oil sketch of Vladimir Dimitrov - The Mas-ter - „self Portrait.“ And if till that time my collector’s passion was still unconscious, chaotic, even confused, then the purchase of these three paintings unleashed unexpected powers in me, on which I can not stand till today. I still keep two of them. They have a special place in my soul.

In one of your interviews you said that Gallery „Indzhov“

is your dream come true. What is it about you today? This gallery was cre-ated to educate in proper criteria and to deliver aesthetic pleasure of visitors. I want people to feel it as a spiritual temple and to feel the need from time to time to visit it, to bring their friends there, to ex-change thoughts, provoked by art. I think I manage to do that for now. For this will assure you the book for impressions.

Do you still dream sometimes and for what you dream? Which is still unrealized dream of the Collectibles Dimitar Indzhov? If we stop dreaming, it means that we’ve walked already our designated way and we need to get ready for forgiveness

and for a meeting with the Creator. I know I have many more things to do and I hope to have enough time to make more dreams turn into reality. I am longing for a painting by Rem-brandt or Van Gogh. I dream of watching a film about Jules Pas-cin. I wish Bulgarian art to gain its international recognition. I dream in a big auction houses a work from Bulgarian artist to be sold for millions of dollars.

This year „Art Madrid” accepted 40 national and international galleries in its new home - the attic of the Chamartín station.

In tune with the changes of the art market and the galleries business model, „Art Madrid” has decided to design a new fair model, advocating to increase the quality and produce a small-er format, with the presence of 40 galleries. On the other hand,

„Art Madrid” doubles its annual presence with a first call from 13 to 17 February 2013 and the following one in November. This double call aims at galleries and, therefore, its artists have greater visibility throughout the year. The new art space of

the fair has three wide open and vaulted halls with a spa-cious 2,500 square meters of exhibition. In addition, the new location provides better access to a greater number of visitors. Besides the General Program, the fair also included “One

Project” – a great chance for the young art, with the presence of new and unconventional media. „One Project”, curated by the art critic Javier Rubio Nomblot, had welcomed galleries taking part with a specific project of one artist younger than 40 years of

age, in a solo format. The 40 galleries presented in

„Art Madrid” have displayed works from more than 200 na-tional and international artists, with the latest trends of spanish and international contempo-rary. The fair space, transformed into a great contemporary art gallery, gave a chance to the collectors and the amateurs to watch a selection of the great masters of the historical avant-gardes, such as Picasso, Mas-son, Miró, Dalí, Vasarely, Leger, Braque, Calder, some of the most important creators of the second half of the last century and beginnings of this one, like Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, Alex Katz, Anthony Caro, Chris-to, and some of the great names

of contemporary spanish art like Tàpies, Antonio López, Chillida, Valdes, Equipo Crónica.

This year “Art Madrid” present-ed some parallel activities. The artist Miguel Angel Belinchón “Belin”, specialized in urban art and graffiti, in collabora-tion with Montana Colors, had painted during the fair a giant wall 10 m. long and 3’22 m. high, in the exterior wall of the building that holds Art Madrid. In addition, and inside the fair were shown several of his works on canvas too.

In the space of the fair was installed also the exhibition of sculpture. The works are from the sculture group Mínimo Tamaño Grande composed by artists such as Diego Canogar and José Luis Menéndez.

„Art Madrid” was a host of the exhibition of costumes by well-known artists like Genovés, Luis Gordillo, Rafael Canogar and others within the Fashion Art Project, which seeked to offer the most outstanding artists of

the pictorial scene a new and exceptional support.

The program had one more present for the guests - perfor-mance-installation “skin is an unstable metal”, directed by the choreographer Azahara ubera Biedma. It was a kind of jour-ney from the individual to the collective body with the decon-struction of the archetype of the hero.

In the April was held a new fair project, named „ART MADRID MAEsTROs”. Inside the project were presented works of the 19th and 20th Century Master Artists. It was a meeting point for Modern Art professionals and an art-loving audience, a refer-ence in which the visitor had received the best advice from art dealers and professionals, whether or not is their first ap-proach to this artistic specialty.Art Madrid Maestros was also a host of an exhibition inside the program „Maestro del Año”, which displayed the work of the Impressionist spanish art-

ist Dario de Regoyos. This new initiative also has a new program called „New Masters Collectors”. In the show was available a tour to be seen different selected works with a price below 3,000 €, to bring the world of Modern Art to New Collectors, and to show that this kind of art can be affordable without making large outlays. „Art Madrid” will expect you again in November for the second time in this year.
