The story continues…!

But then recently, someone told me a moreinteresting version of this story. It continues.

TEAM WORK

The hare was disappointed at losing the race andhe did some Defect Prevention (Root CauseAnalysis). He realized that he'd lost the race onlybecause he had been overconfident, careless andlax.

9

TEAM WORK

If he had not taken things for granted, there's noway the tortoise could have ever beaten him. So hechallenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoiseagreed.

TEAM WORK

If you have two people in your organization, one slow,

methodical and reliable, and the other fast and still reliable atwhat he does, the fast and reliable chap will consistently climbthe organizational ladder faster than the slow, methodicalchap.

Page 13: Arteamwork Presentation

13

Do not go away: It is getting better…….!

It's good to be slow and steady; but it's better to befast and reliable.

14

Do not go away: It is getting better…….!

But the story doesn't end here. The tortoise didsome thinking this time, and realized that there's noway he can beat the hare in a race the way it wascurrently formatted.

16

TEAM WORK

The hare agreed. They started off. In keeping withhis self-made commitment to be consistently fast, the hare took off and ran at top speed until he cameto a broad river.

23

The hare and the tortoise, by this time, hadbecome pretty good friends and they did somethinking together. Both realized that the last racecould have been run much better.

Page 24: Arteamwork Presentation

24

TEAM WORK

So they decided to do the last race again, but torun as a team this time.

Page 25: Arteamwork Presentation

25

TEAM WORK

TEAM WORK

On the opposite bank, the hare again carried thetortoise and they reached the finishing line together. They both felt a greater sense of satisfaction thanthey'd felt earlier.

TEAM WORK

The moral of the story? It's good to be individuallybrilliant and to have strong core competencies; butunless you're able to work in a team and harnesseach other's core competencies, you'll alwaysperform below par because there will always be

situations at which you'll do poorly and someoneelse does well.

Page 28: Arteamwork Presentation

TEAM WORK

Because

Page 29: Arteamwork Presentation

29

TEAM WORK

Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership, letting the person with the relevant corecompetency for a situation take leadership.

Page 30: Arteamwork Presentation

And there is still more

There are more lessons to be learnt from this story.

Page 31: Arteamwork Presentation

31

TEAM WORK

Note that neither the hare nor the tortoise gave upafter failures. The hare decided to work harder andput in more effort after his failure.

Page 32: Arteamwork Presentation

32

TEAM WORK

The tortoise changed his strategy because he wasalready working as hard as he could. In life, whenfaced with failure, sometimes it is appropriate towork harder and put in more effort.

Page 33: Arteamwork Presentation

33

TEAM WORK

Sometimes it is appropriate to change strategy andtry something different. And sometimes it isappropriate to do both.

Page 34: Arteamwork Presentation

34

TEAM WORK

The hare and the tortoise also learnt another vitallesson. When we stop competing against a rival andinstead start competing against the situation, weperform far better.

A Real-Life Example

When Roberto Goizueta took over as CEO of Coca-Cola in the 1980s, he was faced with intensecompetition from Pepsi that was eating into Coke'sgrowth.

36

A Real-Life Example

His executives were Pepsi-focused and intent onincreasing market share 0.1 per cent a time.

37

A Real-Life Example

Goizueta decided to stop competing against Pepsiand instead compete against the situation of 0.1 per cent growth.

38

A Real-Life Example

He asked his executives what was the averagefluid intake of an American per day? The answer was 14 ounces. What was Coke's share of that? Twoounces. Goizueta said Coke needed a larger shareof that market.

39

A Real-Life Example

The competition wasn't Pepsi. It was the water, tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices that went into theremaining 12 ounces. The public should reach for aCoke whenever they felt like drinking something.

TEAM WORK

To sum up, the story of the hare and tortoise teaches usmany things. Important lessons are:

4. never give up when faced with failure;
