At least 800 attendees, participants, and volun- teers trekked through the brisk winds left over from the previous day’s snowstorm to come see the much anticipated show. People visited the Queen City from as far as neighboring Greensboro, Hickory, and Raleigh. The first and more solemn segment of the festivities began with the introduction by Master of Ceremony Ms. Kiem Dang, in memoriam to ancestors, a salute to the U.S. and Vietnamese Freedom flags, and the U.S. national anthem sang by graceful and lovely Miss Kelly Huynh. VAC’s current president, Mr. Binh Phu warmly welcomed guests with wishes for good health and prosperity in 2013. One could surely be ready to usher in the Lunar New Year after that. But there was more to come. Women and little girls could be seen proud- ly showing off their Vietnamese cultural heritage by wearing beau- tiful, flowing traditional “ao dai’ dresses. With the facility filled to capacity and no standing room, guests scurried to find tasty treats served up by local talents so they didn’t lose their seats. Pageant participants were finally intro- duced on stage and up for grabs was the $1000 grand prize, $500 2nd prize and $300 for 3rd prize, and Kindle Reader prizes for Miss Congeniality and Miss Pho- togenic. All contestants were beautifully adorned with differing styles of the well- known ‘Ao Dai” dresses. Judges, Mr. Tuan Tran, Ms. Ngoc Do, Ms. Le Pham, Ms. Van Tran and Mr. Vinh Hoang, would surely have a difficult job on their hand with se- lecting one Miss Vietnam to go on and represent Vietnam and to compete in Miss Asia in May. Thirteen beautiful young la- dies competed to capture the crown. Taking home the grand prize and the title of Miss Vietnam of the Carolinas 2013 was Ms. Jeni Nguyen of Greenville, SC – an In- ternational Studies student at the University of SC. The first runner-up title went to Ms. Trang Ton, a high school student from High Point, NC - who wants to be a teacher. The second runner up title was captured by Ms. Jenny Bui, a high school student in Green- ville, SC who wishes to become a heart surgeon. In addition to those three prizes, the title of Miss Congeniality went to Ms. Tina Nguyen – a student at NC State Uni- versity majoring in textile engineering and psychology and the title of Miss Photoge- nic went to Ms. Kem Kem, an Economics and Finance major at UNCC. Throughout the program, guests were able to test out their luck for the New Year by purchasing raffle tickets. Raffle prizes included a number of Auto Bell gift cer- tificates, goodie gift baskets worth up to $100 and an iPad. Guests were thrilled by the amazing dances and fashion show performed by a dance team from Lien Hoa temple, St Joseph Vietnamese Catho- lic church, a K’hor traditional dance by a K’hor team from Greensboro, NC and many other wonderful performances. Overall, the Year of the Snake 2013 Tet cel- ebration was a resounding success and we owe it to the many volunteers and organiza- tions that have devoted their precious time and resources to make the event possible. Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business op-portunities and to promote business actiAvities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities.

Forty years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Con-sidering average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contribut-ing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

First Hmong United Methodist Church

Pastor Huaa Vang visited the Asian Her-ald &Library on February27, to share in-formation about his ministry. First Hmong United Methodist Church is hosted by Kilgo United Methodist Church, located at 2101 Belvedere Ave, Charlotte, NC 28213.Kilgo has a rich history and tradition of be-ing a neighborhood church. It sits in the heart of the Plaza-Midwood Neighbor-hood. Their purpose is to build relation-ships with all people to help them know, love, and serve God in Christian commu-nity. “The neighborhood is diverse, and the mission is to mirror and embrace our diver-sity. God creates us each unique and bless-es us individually to add to the whole com-munity. We cannot be complete without all that God created. When God finished cre-ating humanity God saw that it was very GOOD! Our members, our neighbors and all people in our eyes and God's are created very GOOD.Come share in the new and exciting ministry happening at your neigh-borhood church, Kilgo. Kilgo was founded as a neighborhood church. The Plaza and Midwood areas were fast growing commu-nities that needed a faith foundation. Bish-op John Carlisle Kilgo helped to charter

the congregation and thus the congregation took on his family name. The Church was organized under the lead-ership of Reverend John R. Hamilton on September 5, 1943 with 37 Charter Mem-bers and met for the first 15 months at the Midwood school auditorium. The current location of the congregation was given to Kilgo in August of 1944 by the Char-lotte Methodist Mission Society. This was the property and home formerly owned by Thomas Clayton McNeil. Kilgo wor-shiped in the old home from 1945 until 1959 when ground was broken for the new sanctuary. The community has transformed and the church strives to be the community church as it was founded. “We have begun new programs to reach all people.” If you have questions please call us at (704) 649-8314 E-mail:[email protected] CHURCH SERVICE: 9:30-10:45 AM

CHINESE NEW YEAR By Joyce Melton

The Chinese New Year Season means hard work for members of Charlotte’s Little Lo-tus Troupe. It’s their main performance sea-son! For nine years, they have entertained at many events around the Charlotte area to celebrate the most famous of Chinese holi-days: Spring Festival! They make several appearancesduring January and February each year. In January, 2013, they performed a classi-cal Chinese dance “FeiTian,” along with a fan dance at the Chinese American Associa-tion’s celebration at Dana Auditorium, and again at the Korean New Year festival at the Halton Theater. They danced at the Peace-ful Dragon in February; and as Davidson College welcomed the Year of the Snake, the girls entertained with dances and a fash-ion show. They also made a special appear-ance for Families with Children from China (“FCC”), where they were greeted warmly by little girlsdreaming of the day they toom-ight wear a colorful costume and dance on the stage. In addition, they have a standing invita-tion to Myrtle Beach each year, to be a part of the Chinese New Year party at the Bur-roughs-Chapin Art Museum. This year, they arrived on Friday evening and rehearsed un-til 10:00 pm; as early as 8:30am on Satur-day morning rehearsed again, and then put on elaborate costumes, make-up and head-pieces before the Museum opened. Chil-dren sat in the floor for a front-row seat to watch the beautiful fan dances, and the au-dience enjoyed an up-close look at the au-thentic costumes from Shanghai. This year included a “first” for the Troupe: they were showcased on WCNC-TV with anchors Dion Lim and Sonja Gantt for a story on the Year of the Snake and its sig-nificance to Chinese families. While Dance Director Xiao Song He was interviewed

about the holiday, the girls danced in the background. Dancers and parents alike were very interested in the TV station, its activi-ties, cameras and TV personalities. However, on Friday, February 15, the Lit-tle Lotus Troupe members and their families celebrated Chinese New Year—not by per-forming—but with a family dinner in their honor. The meal was catered and included plenty of dumplings, which seemed to run out early! The girls piled their plates with sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, chicken with vegetables, and lo mein. Veggie trays, mandarin oranges, cupcakes and Chinese candies werebrought by parents. Xiao Song made irresistible fruit smoothies, and spe-cial guest Roxanna Dimitriu brought a Eu-ropean pear-and-custard dessert which drew compliments and requests for her recipe! New on the family dinner agenda this year was a talent show by members of the troupe. Amelie played several beauti-ful piano pieces; Elaine gave a gymnastics performance, and Grace entertained on the saxophone. Emily recited a Song Dynasty poem and Xiao Song started to sing a song by TereseaTeng, until she was interrupted by “technical difficulties.” She promised to sing it again when we have karaoke prop-erly set up. The dinner is a wonderful time for the dancers and their families to enjoy a special evening together after the hard work and dedication of rehearsals and recent perfor-mances. Coming up on the troupe’s agenda: a dance competition in March, the “Hello Asia” festival in April, and the Asian Festi-val in May. The pace has slowed, but only for a short while—the Little Lotus Troupe knows that preparing for the upcoming dance competition means more long hours and extra rehearsals! ■

Charlotte - The 2013 Charlotte Asian Fes-tival will be held on May 4 at Ramsey Creek Park, Cornelius. The Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) will again be joined by the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation De-partment as co-organizers, a partnership forged since 1999 to introduce Asian cul-ture and traditions to the greater Charlotte community. As before, visitors will be entertained by and treated with a wide variety of tradi-tional Asian offerings in food, stage per-formances, cultural exhibits and merchan-dise for a fun filled day to all. Admission is free. Satellite parking areas will be posted for all visitors, with shuttle bus ser-vices to the park. For general information, please visit www.charlottedragonboat.com. Dragon Boat racing continues to be the fastest growing water sports event around the globe. The event embraces and pro-motes competition, fair play, team build-ing, community cohesiveness, culture and history. Organized competitions are held in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia , culminating in World Cup Championship races annually. Since its launch in 2006, the event has been a big success in terms of attendance level as well community participation. Teams that joined included those from the business community, non-profit organizations, high schools, col-

leges, citizen groups and breast cancer survivor teams from Atlanta, Charleston, SC and Lindsay, Canada. For more details, please contact [email protected]. The Miss Asia Carolinas Pageant, now in its 10th year, is more of a showcase of Asian Culture rather than a contest. Win-ners are chosen on a three-tiered process, based on intellect, talent, community ser-vice, beauty, personality and character. The young candidates go through an ex-perience that includes leadership training, public speaking, personal development, cultural enhancement, people skills, social outreach, and fellowship. The Pageant strives for inclusion, diversity and encour-ages representatives from all the Asian nationalities that reside in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area and environs The Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) is a nonprofit, all volunteer based organization. Founded in 1999, CAACC serves as a bridge to con-nect Asia and the United States in general and the local 60,000 plus Asian-American residents to the Charlotte community at large. With its increasing membership, CAACC’s focus is to continue to nurture, strengthen, and empower the Asian Amer-ican business community in economic growth, Asian cultural awareness and ac-tive engagement in civic affairs. Tides and Times Group USA, Inc.(TTG) welcomed the Year of the Snake with a Day of Appreciation at Charlotte’s Wan Fu Chinese Bistro Saturday Febru-ary 9th. More than 113 guests attended this celebration hosted by Jimmy & Grace Lee to express their thanks to spe-cial guests who contribute in many ways to the growth and success of the Tides and Times group. The guests represented support or-ganizations such as the Union County Chamber of Commerce, the Carolina Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, the Chun Group, the Asian Herald newspaper, Charlotte Chinese Academy,Hanjin Shipping, TMX Ship-ping, International Exports, ECM Inc., and several hardwood lumber manufac-turing companies in North Carolina, Vir-ginia, and Georgia and members of the management team of TTG. With sales offi ces and a distribution center in Asia along with 7 hardwood sawmills and lumber drying facilities in America,TTG is comprised of more than 250 employees. Over 140 of these em-ployees were added in the state of North Carolina during the past 3 years. The company is one of America’s largest ex-porters of hardwood lumber to Asia, with its head offi ce in Charlotte. The principals, husband and wife Jim-my and Grace Lee came to the United States at the beginning of 2004 and have steadily built this thriving company. They are especially thankful for the sup-

port and friendship they have encoun-tered on this path. Initially they came to America to source hardwood lumber from American lumber manufacturers and built the beginning of the company on that premise. As the world market changed and many lumber producers disappeared in the economic conditions of the past several years, changes were made in the company’s strategy. Grace Lee formed Coco Lumber LLC and be-gan marketing lumber in Vietnam. She rapidly garnered a strong following in that marketplace and today sells about 1/3 of the hardwood lumber exported from the United States to Vietnam. The company’s sales team in mainland China enjoys a strong presence in that market and these two markets drive a continuing growth of American based lumber production and procurement. The addition of sawmills near the towns of Bostic, Tryon, Marion and Waynes-ville in North Carolina, in Kenbridge, Virginia and in Edgefi eld, South Caroli-na generates nearly 40 per cent of yearly exports. Procurement of lumber from companies from New York to Georgia throughoutthe Appalachian production area brings the yearly shipments to 90 million board feet. Continuing growth will likely push the total to well over 100 million board feet yearly within the 2013 year. This places the company and the state in a strong position in the future exporta-tion of American hardwoods to Asia. ■

Local Charlotean Neil Patel, a freshman at Ardrey Kell High School, and Ronak Bhagia, an eighth grader at Metrolina Re-gional Scholars Academy, were honored to be invited by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) to attend the Presidential Inaugural Conference in Wash-ington DC, and to see President Barack Obama give his inaugural address. CYLC is an organization which recruits scholars from Middle and High Schools and colleges from all United States and the World and encourages and instills leadership qualities in them. Asian Herald has their story! Let’s see how the events unfolded.”The conference in Washington DC was a fi ve day program, in-volving discussions of the process of presi-dential campaigns and elections, the history of the inaugural ceremony, the functioning of the Cabinet and White House, life of the Presidents and the presidential role in his-tory. Also during this conference, we were fortunate to be addressed by distinguished speakers who came to talk about the Presi-dency, leadership skills required to be suc-cessful, and about following and achieving your dreams. The keynote speakers for the High School delegates included Condoleezza Rice, who served as the Secretary of State of the Unit-ed States, the second woman and the 1st African American woman to hold this post. Dr Rice enthralled us with her experiences as the Secretary Of State and as the Na-tional Security Advisor to President George W. Bush. She also inspired us to follow our dreams and fi nd our true inner passion so

that we can excel in our future. General Wesley Clark, a retired general of the United States Army and Commander of Operation Allied Forces during the Kosovo War and NATO’s Supreme Allied Com-mander, Europe also addressed the High School delegates. General Clark, a Demo-cratic presidential candidate in 2003, who has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and knighthoods from the British and Dutch governments along with many other awards, gave an elaborate account about his experiences in the army during his years of service, and how it’s important to believe in your own abilities. The Middle School delegates were ad-dressed by Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, the daughters of President George W. Bush who talked about their experienc-es of living in the White House and what it feels like to be the daughters of the Presi-dent of the United States. Along with many stimulating workshops and lectures, we got to go sightseeing around Washington D.C., the National Mu-seums, Arlington National Cemetery Wash-ington D.C. and also witness the 57th in-auguration and the swearing in of the 44th president of the United States for his second term, Barack Obama. It was very exciting to have the Smithsonians open exclusively for us at 7 am in the morning, and attend a grand black tie gala event exclusively for the High School delegates, at the Air and Space Museum until midnight, dinner, DJ and all. Overall, this was the most exciting, edu-cational and stimulating trip we’ve had. We were inspired to recognize our ability to make a difference and take charge and get involved to uplift our local communities. It was also wonderful interacting with other

scholars from around the country and the world. This was no doubt a very unique e x p e r i e n c e , one which we will never for-get.” ■

Karen and her team are sharing the following, referring to Areas of Impact in Local Immigration Community. “As of August 15, 2012, Children who arrived to the United States undocumented before the age of 16 have been able to apply for a temporary protected status known as "Deferred Action" which would allow them protection from deportation for unlawful presence alone as well as provide them with Employment Authorization that would entitle the individual to a social security number and, until very recently, a NC driver's license. The Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County

The Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County meet the second Wednesday of every month at the Asian Library. Our meet and greet starts at 6:30 pm and the speaker and discussion follow at 7. Our membership is open to all registered Democratic women. (Democratic men may join, too, as associate members.) Our dues are $30 per year or $15 for women over age 60. The DWMC is a chapter of the Democratic Women of North Carolina. Our mission is to promote the goals of the Party by engag-ing Democratic Women in the political pro-cess and advocating for issues important to women. The DWMC started 2013 right—we had a very energized and very happy January meeting at our new meeting place, the Asian Library. We had a great turn-out and, I must say this, the food was fantastic! Many thanks to all the women who brought the delicious appetizers and desserts, and the assortment

The Mecklenburg Asian Pacific American Bar

The Mecklenburg Asian Pacific American Bar (“MAP-Bar”) is a network of Asian at-torneys in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. They provide resources for one another and partner with affiliate organizations to increase and promote diversity in the le-gal community. The organization’s current President, Brian Heslin, attorney at Moore & Van Allen proposed that the leaders of the Asian community organizations get to-gether to discuss how we could work col-laboratively with one another. MAP-Bar’s Vice President, Pax Sinsankeo, and past President, Mica Nguyen Worthy, worked to identify key organizations in Charlotte serving the Asian communities. On January 31, 2013, the leaders of these organizations met at the Asian Library in Charlotte, and formed new synergies. The meeting of com-munity leaders was described as a "historic moment" and "one of the best days of my life" by Dr. Bautista and Dr. Chen. Each or-ganization has so much to offer and we are only just starting to learn more about how to support each other. Dr. John Chen works with the Carolinas Asian-American Cham-ber of Commerce and was excited to see the new generation of leadership getting in-volved and collaborating to better the Asian communities in Charlotte. The CAACC is focused on commerce, culture and com-munity service to bridge east and west. Dr. Chen invited us all to participate in the up-coming Dragon Boat race. Dr. Nini Bausti-ta also represented with the CAACC and stated that this event was a historical mo-ment in the commnuity. She spoke about how she has been impressed with how the different Asian communities in Charlotte have evolved. She mentioned the Smithson-ian institute's exhibit on the story of the boat people in Charlotte (http://www.sites.si.edu/exhibitions/exhibits/exit_saigon/main.htm). Dr. Bautista also encouraged young leaders

to get involved with CBI (http://c b i c h a r l o t t e .com/), Leader-ship Charlotte ( h t t p : / / w w w.leadershipchar-lotte.org/), and even the Levine

museum. Tony Zhang works to recruit Chinese companies to work in the Carolinas. Tony works closely with Dr. Chen and other members of the CAACC as well as the Car-olinas Regional Center for foreign invest-ments: http://www.carolinaregionalcenter.com/. Tin Nguyen works with the Charlotte International Council (http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/cic/Pages/default.aspx) and the Vietnamese Association of Charlotte. The CIC provides opportunities to promote Charlotte as an international city; the VAC focuses on cultural events and just recently had a very successful Tet festival on Feb 17. Priya Patel, Allan Chua, and Moses Sye are law school students and are involved in the law student organization, APALSA, which hopes to get more students involved in the local legal community. They recently hosted a successul joint networking event with the MAP-Bar at Vapiano. Moses also reported he attended the Korean festival in Charlotte, which was also a success. Warren Chu works with the Charlotte Chapter of the NAAAP. His group focuses on professional development, networking and philanthropy. http://www.naaapchar-lotte.org/. We are already working with Warren on joint events and panel discus-sions that the MAP-Bar may be able to sup-port. Kiran Patel is the current president of NetIP (http://www.netipnc.org/), which is a networking organization with about 200 lo-cal members. Kiran had some great ideas of how to turn events into fundraisers to support our local organizations. Brian Heslin is President of MAP-Bar (www.map-bar.com) and stated that he was delighted to see these organizations growing together. He encouraged us to help the com-munities we're in because we are an interna-tional city now. As lawyers, we want to help the business and communities grow as well.

NAAAP, CAACC leaders meeting

Cat Bao Le works with the Southeast Asian Coalition, which is a new, 501c3 organiza-tion that has partnered with other local or-ganizations. The SEAC, which is heavily dependent on volunteers, started as natu-ralization and community-based interest group and have recently started working with more Asian businesses in the area. Her group works with the LAAAC and have Mega-naturalization fair coming up March 13. Thanh-Thu Luong also works with the SEAC and talked about the new youth pro-gram for Asian students through a story tell-ing project with flip cameras. The students will also learn to edit film and in so doing bring awareness to the Asian communi-ties. They want to nurture leadership and are asking for anyone with expertise in film editing or who has extra flip cameras, soft-ware, or computers that can be donated. Julie Chiu is a Charlotte-based real es-tate attorney and a charter member of the MAP-Bar. Julie has lived in Charlotte for

of drinks—really it was outstanding! Concetta Caliendo, 1st VP/President Elect DWNC, installed the new slate of officers, and thus, a new year of work furthering the Democratic Party begins. Thankfully, our past president, Susan Higgins, will be in Charlotte through June and we will have her wise counsel and well-mannered grace to help us. Also, I want to tell you that I have appointed another past president, Joan Belk, to be my Parliamentarian. The Mecklenburg County Democratic Party hosted a Commu-nity Inaugural Ball on Saturday, February 16, at the Ritz Carlton. Precinct organization meetings begin Feb-ruary 24. If you have any questions about your precinct, how to organize, etc., please consult with the master of precinct organiz-ing, our 3rd Vice President, Jyoti Friedland. You can contact Jyoti at her email [email protected]; or call her at 704-877-2267. She is knowledgeable and ready to assist anyone, at any time! We have so many excit-ing plans for 2013!. We are very thrilled to announce that our speaker will be Mayor An-thony Foxx at our next meeting on March 13. Please come and you will quickly see that Democratic Women are the life of the party!Mary Milan, President DWMC, 704-362-2054 ■

Julie is well known in the commu-nity and is a strong supporter of the Asian Communities. http://jchiulaw.com/ Florami Lee is the president of the FACC (http://www.facc-charlotte.com/). Florami explained that the Filipino community has been a strong supporter of Asian cultural events for many years in Charlotte. On April 13 they plan to have a picnic event at Reedy Creek and that the food will be deli-cious! Electronics and Medicine

Meet the Local Inovator Myo Sandar Nwe.

Myo Sandar Nwe has a degree of Bach-elor in Electronics. She is currently working in the Innova-tion and Technology Department of the Ace Medical Group. During her tenure, she has developed four medical Apps in Iphone and android platform. She single handedly programmed the following Apps.1. OTCPlus, is an Over the counter Medi-cation app in iphone and android versions. Consumers are happy that they are able to find the right over the counter medication as per the symptoms; precautions and uses are listed in brief concise manner. Pick the right medication and you can also link to the manufacturer website, and use the coupons at the same time. The OTCplus app was featured in Yahoo! finance, and many other online newspaper, business journal and technology-related blogs.2. Epidynamics, Sick report app. This is a visionary app and it is developed in iphone version and android version is coming soon. This App is designed to track the sicknesses around the world when users report their sickness anony-mously via this app. This app tracks

symptoms and diseases in different part of the world. It enables health organizations, research and disease control offices to track pattern of the spread of disease and illnesses; it gives leverage to prevent and fight these diseases in the near future.Imagine “everyday waking up and know-ing the diseases occurring in the differ-ent parts of the world, while receiving advance information to prevent them;” this was not possible until this Epidynam-ics was created. Power of the crowd plus power of technology can now make it possible; one day, thanks to development of Epidynamics, will have Sick-Report mobile app soon. 3. Copay Discount App, Currently near completion, the app offers direct prescrip-tion discount from the manufacturer; phy-sicians can check before patients leave the office if the medication is affordable for them or not. Many times, the insurance company will reject some of the newer medication until the patients have ex-hausted all older and generic medications for the condition. The long and tedious process of insurance-pre-authorization that medical offices have to follow makes nearly impossible to prescribe new medi-cation. With this application, the manufac-turer will be giving competitive discounts to the patients, making branded medicines affordable again. The savings will help patients tremendously, while physicians get peace-of-mind knowing that patients get the proper treatment. All, thanks to the app, that will be available in both an-droid and Iphone version, sometime in March 2013.4. SlimPlate System, 4 stage portion con-trolled Weight loss system app. This App assists the SlimPlate weight loss pro-gram users, and enables friends to sup-port friends at their efforts to lose weight. It reminds when to eat, suggests what to eat; even when you are dining out, it let you share how you are doing with your fellow fans. Exercise videos for different fitness level users, starting from the begin-ners to challenge, are included in the App. It is like having a personal trainer at your finger tip at your convenience. With this SlimPlate App and the SlimPlate portion controlled weight loss system your suc-cess at losing weight is ensured. ■

UCLA flips over South Meck twins

High school freshmen are first to earn UCLA gymnastic scholarships Anna and Grace Glenn are only 14 years old, but already the South Mecklenburg High School twins hold scholarships to one of the nation’s top universities – Univer-sity of California, Los Angeles. They are UCLA’s first high school freshmen to re-ceive gymnastic scholarships to the school. Their mother, Cindi, said the interest in gymnastics started when the girls were two years old. They attended their friend’s Olympiad recital and following the perfor-mance, the girls immediately took to the equipment. “As soon as the exhibition was over, the girls were trying to climb ropes, jump off mats and hang from bars. It was love at first sight – they were hooked,” said Cindi. But becoming a gymnast on one of the nation’s top gymnastics team is no easy feat. The UCLA gymnastics team is a six-time national champion, with a pre-season No. 2 ranking. Monday through Friday the girls wake-up around 6:15 a.m. and

they eat breakfast in the car on the way to South Meck (it’s their mother’s way to give them a few extra minutes of sleep). After school, their mother will pick them up and take them to the gym with snacks in hand. Then it’s hours of training with head coach Ludmilla Shobe at Southeastern Gymnas-tics. In Russia, Shobe coached a three-time Olympian. She believes the Glenns have the potential for the Elite-level needed to qualify for the Olympics. Anna and Grace have competed in the 2012 Junior Olympics competition in Hampton Roads, Va. Grace made the Junior Olympic National Team. The Glenn twins are also considered as top gymnasts in their region. They often travel nationally and sometimes internationally for training and competitions. To train for the Olympics games would require home school and at least 40 hours of training at the gym, said Glenn. For now, the girls are satisfied with training about four hours a day, holding scholarships in hand. “It is all about the routine. We know what we have to do each day and we just get it done,” said Grace. The freshmen also apply that same structure and organization to their school work. They are honor students, who have a wide-array of interests including studying Chinese and Japanese. “Gymnastics shapes you as a person and it makes you more discipline,” said Anna, who is treating a recent gymnastics injury. “I have learned to push through the pain. My pain tolerance is high, because I know what it takes to succeed. You have to have a positive attitude.” The Glenn girls will attend UCLA in 2016. According to U.S. News & World Report, UCLA ranks No. 24 in the nation and accepts only 25 percent of its applicants. The school is considered to be most selective in choosing its students. Midwood International and Cultural Center

The Midwood Center is the new home for International House. After 30 years on Haw-thorne Lane, we are thrilled to be in this fab-ulous new facility which we share with many other international and cultural organizations.Ni hao! International House celebrates language and culture through weekly conversation hours. Chinese on Tuesdays, 6 PM (2nd and 4th week of the month) Starting March 2013; and Japanese on Thursdays, 12pm. These free events offer informal conversation time with native speakers in a comfortable set-ting. They are appropriate for all skill levels. Best of all, the conversation hours are free and open to everyone! Click here for a print-able schedule of current conversation hours, which are held at 1817 Central Avenue, Room 202. We encourage you to attend! For more information, contact Gail Johnson atg-

[email protected] or 704.333.8099. Images from the Midwood International and Cultural Center Open House held on January 27th. New Year at Midwood! “ “Another planet.” This is the phrase that one International House staff member used recently to describe her lovely office at our

new home in the Midwood International & Cultural Center. Indeed, we all feel that we have arrived at a wonderful new place that we never would have thought possible! Our legal team is already seeing clients in private offices, a huge improvement over the crowd-ed quarters at our old house where there

was insufficient space for confidential dis-cussions. Classrooms are being readied for upcoming Conversation Hours, Doorways meetings, and ESL and citizenship classes. Packing boxes are gradually being emptied. A striking new sign has been installed at the front of the building on Central Avenue, and visitors are grinning when they walk through our doors for the first time. But one of the best things about being at Midwood is that International House is now part of a community. The Japanese Associa-tion of Charlotte, One Ethiopian Community, and Grameen America are getting settled in their offices upstairs. The League of Women Voters and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Cul-tural Center have just begun to move in to their rooms on the main level, and the Lan-guage Academy, Sankofa Gallery, and Uni-versal Institute for Successful Aging in Char-lotte (UISAC) are preparing to open soon. Other interested cultural and international organizations are contacting us about leasing

some of the remaining rooms. The future is full of so many emerging possibilities for creative collaboration and shared programming! For instance, many of the immigrants and refugees served by our legal team can now be directed upstairs to Grameen America, a micro-lending in-stitution that assists low-income entrepre-neurs who traditionally do not have access to larger banks. Members of One Ethiopian Community and UISAC (which focuses on Indian and South Asian communities) can walk down the hall to attend ESL classes at International House or inquire about services at our legal clinic. The Language Academy is right around the corner for members of our Language Conversation Hours who want structured lessons for learning the language of their choice. It is indeed an exciting time and a wonder-ful way to start the New Year. We invite you to be part of this “new planet” that is now our home.” ■

Project Art Aid

Friday, February 22, 2013 The Gallery at Packard Place in Charlotte was filled with art-lovers, and supporters of Project Aid. The finalists, all excited by the opportuni-ty to participate had a great night; for us, there were all winners, but only one could receive the grant. With a great ambiance, food, wine and good conversation, it was an amazing evening, and a record high of people daring the rain for the chance to express their opinion and admiration. From the organizers, ”Thanks to all who attended Friday's Queen City Soup. A special thanks to our sponsors, The Gal-lery at Packard Place, Las Delicias Bak-ery, The Art Blab.com, and Olde Meck-lenburg Brewery. With your support, we created the largest micro-grant yet at $1450. We had another first for Queen City Soup, a vote that resulted in a tie between Cathay Dawkins and his proj-ect "Emerging The Young At Art" and Martique Lorray and her "Windsor Park Elementary Milepost." Because we had created such a large grant, we decided to split the grant and fund both projects. Here is a photo of Martique and Cathay accepting the grant.” Windsor Park Elementary Milepost Proj-ect.Windsor Park Elementary recently received a prestigious “School of Distinc-tion” honor from the state of NC. This is significant given that a great majority of

the students are minorities that come from impoverished families, and roughly one-third of the student body is learning to speak English. As noticed by Asian Her-ald, many are from Asian countries. Last year the students’ progress culminated in a combined pass rate of 82% on reading, math, and science exams, which earned Windsor Park the “School of Distinction” label. I propose to design and construct a unique, artistic milepost that reflects the strong multicultural characteristics of the Windsor Park students. I will work with Windsor Park Elementary staff and stu-dents to identify approximately 16 differ-ent countries where student families origi-nated. Pointers will be designed that lists a significant natural or cultural feature of each country (e.g. Machu Picchu – Peru) and of course the distance to get there (3251 miles) from Windsor Park. The milepost will be topped with a weather-vane bearing a symbol of travel or the un-known. (e.g., globe, winged horse, ship). The artwork will be installed on the Wind-sor Park Elementary grounds. East Char-lotte is a melting pot of cultures. These worldly peoples are changing the face and feel of this City and are bringing the beauty of the globe to our doorstep. As a child of immigrants, I know firsthand that it is easy to lose the knowledge of where your people came from. This art piece will encourage the students to remember their homelands, to be proud of their cultural heritage, and it will serve as a geographic learning tool, which will stimulate further interest in the world. It is also a tangible, visual display of the beautiful ethnic di-versity present within the Windsor Park Elementary School community “Emerging the Young at Art”Project. Youth Arts Festival will ignite the innate creativity of Charlotte area’s youth. The festival will consist of; an Art Competi-tion, an Art Fair, and Live Performances, by local youth. Prior to the festival, stu-dents from local schools(including home & private school youth) may enter the themed art competition by submitting 2 original art pieces (1 for each of the two themes). To ensure All students an oppor-tunity to enter, there will be a low Entry

Fee of $5 per art piece. Finalists of the competition will be announced towards the end of Spring Semester, and the win-ners will be announced during the festival. Every student that enters the competition will be invited to vend for free, during the art fair segment of the festival. The art fair will provide every contestant an opportu-nity to showcase their work, with the op-tion to sell. The Youth Arts Festival will feature an array of Charlotte’s artistic tal-ents with performances by local; Dance Groups, Orchestras, Bands, and Choirs. A special invitation to perform will be given to Little Lotus Troupe, led by He Xiao-Song; the group has been in much demand in Charlotte and surrounding areas since they made their debut in the fall of 2004, with dances and even fashion shows, where they displayed their colorful Chi-nese outfits, including qi paos, a tradition-al lady’s formal dress.

Jocelyn EllisLife Of A Holo-gram Project…is a conceptual music art album that will be recorded & re-leased by Charlotte Music Award-win-

ning songwriter & vocalist jocElyn ellis. The album will tell the story about a holo-gram who lives during Year 4013 and ob-serves humanity facing global war, caste systems, and a lack of natural resources on earth. This album will feature collabo-rations from some of Charlotte’s brightest musicians & producers including Justin Aswell (from the group Mr. Invisible), Jason Scavone (lead singer/songwriter for band The Hot Gates), Benie Beatz (lo-cal hip hop pioneer & mastermind), local folk legend Jared Allan and many more! It will be a concept album and will give the Charlotte music scene a piece of concep-tual music art that will show collaboration between local artists, genre exploration, and positive community opportunities for networking and idea sharing at events like the Hologram Listening House Party & CD Release event!

Eric Alan WattinneThe Music Scene Project. Eric is a Visual Artist & Live

Painter based here in the Charlotte/Meck-lenburg area & I would love to receive support to make my projects more engag-ing and enlightening for the audience! I currently paint on whatever I can afford but with a grant I would be able to use more generous supports such as canvas or linen, more visually stimulating media and provide better light sources so it would be easier to view the work during disorient-ing light and stage shows. I usually paint for venues and musicians in the NoDa/Plaza-Midwood area already but with these few simple additions I would be able to provide a much more entertaining & professional show for Charlotte’s ‘Music Scene’. ■

的俘虏,一定要做情绪的主人;

面;第一,一定要吃好 3 顿 饭;

第二,一定要睡好 8 个小时觉;

第三,每天坚持运动半个小时;

日期等;

来源等;

Cell 704) 578-7944E-mail: [email protected] / 417 Cecil St Charlotte NC 28204Korean Veterans Association of Carolina ■

Charlotte Location: Faith Fellow-ship Baptist Church (주소 :13601 Idlewild Rd, Matthews, NC 28105 )오시는길: I-485 N toward Mat-thews, Exit 49 (Idlewild)문의: 704-654-8011, [email protected]
