TABUNG DANA ASTRO - KRISHEN JIT ANUGERAHKAN 5 GERAN KEPADA PARA
PENGGIAT SENI MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR, 9 NOVEMBER 2017 – Sebahagian daripada komitmen berterusan bagi menyokong seni
landskap Malaysia, Astro dengan kerjasama Five Arts Centre telah menganugerahkan geran yang bernilai
RM 34,000 kepada five (5 ) penggiat seni Malaysia melalui Tabung Dana- Krishen Jit Astro. Diilhamkan
oleh teater legenda Allahyarham Dato’ Krishen Jit, dana yang terkumpul selama beberapa tahun lalu
telah diberikan kepada 49 penggiat seni tempatan dengan jumlah pengeluaran kini mencecah RM
361,000.
Sebanyak 5 geran telah dianugerahkan kepada para penggiat seni tempatan seperti, Agnes Le Agama,
Anrie Too dan Kelvin Wong, Christine May Yong, Lim Pei Ern, dan Ridhwan Saidi. Tahun ini, peruntukan
sebanyak RM34,000 diagihkan kepada penerima geran antara RM2,000 hingga RM20,000 untuk
menjayakan bermacam-macam bengkel latihan.
Tan Sri Datuk Norliza Rofli, Pengarah di Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian, Kementerian Pelancongan
dan Kebudayaan Malaysia yang juga panel pemilihan dana ini berkata, “Kita dapat lihat dana ini ini
dilabur secara terus kepada seni landskap Malaysia yang kini semakin berkembang aktif dan maju
kerana dapat bekerjasama dengan penggiat seni Malaysia yang telah membawa karya-karya kreatif yang
segar untuk dipaparkan dikaca TV mahupun secara langsung. Kami teruja kerana pihak Astro sendiri
melaksanakan sebuah komitmen sebegini untuk terus menyokong industri kesenian Malaysia.”
Lim Pei Ern yang menerima RM8,000 berkata, "Saya sangat gembira kerana dipilih sebagai salah seorang
penerima. Tabung Dana - Krishen Jit ini menunjukkan sokongannya terhadap projek Nyanyian Bumi. Ini
adalah projek kolektif bersama para penari serantau, melibatkan saya sendiri yang mewakili Malaysia,
Aco Ridwan (Indonesia), dan Atsushi Heki (Jepun) yang berkongsi perbezaan dalam latar belakang dan
budaya, menyiapkan beberapa konsep dalam tiga dimensi yang berbeza. Projek ini dapat menyaksikan
persamaan dalam tradisi yang dipraktikkan melalui lagu, tarian, ritual, dan sebagainya serta melakar
inspirasi lagu-lagu tradisional Sulawesi Selatan. "
Tabung Dana Astro- Krishen Jit ini akan digunakan untuk pelbagai jenis latihan termasuklah khusus
latihan, latihan amali, produksi eksperimen, penulisan, atau mewujudkan persekiraran baharu dalam
bidang muzik, tarian, teater, penulisan, kraf, seni visual atau prestasi yang membantu penerima geran
untuk mencapai cita-cita mereka dalam bidang kesenian. Inisiatif ini berhasrat untuk mengekalkan
semangat kreatif Krishen Jit yang hidupnya bersuluhkan kesenian terutamanya kepada generasi kini.

Tahun ini, Tabung Dana Astro- Krishen Jit telah menerima sebanyak 45 permohonan untuk projek-projek
dalam tarian, teater, filem, video, penerbitan, seni visual, muzik, animasi, pendidikan, latihan dan kerja
yang penuh berdisiplin.

ABOUT FIVE ARTS CENTRE
Five Arts Centre is a dynamic collective of Malaysian artists and producers, dedicated to generating alternative art forms and images in the contemporary arts landscape. It is well known for cutting edge performances in theatre, dance, music and young people’s theatre, and incorporates aspects of the visual and digital arts as well. The collective has performed and presented its work in Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, India, Egypt, Australia, Canada, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Finland, UAE and the United Kingdom.
Since it was formed in 1984, by theatre directors Chin San Sooi and Krishen Jit, and dancer-choreographer Marion D’Cruz, Five Arts Centre has been committed to articulating the complexity of Malaysian culture and identity through explorations and fusions of local vocabularies, forms and traditions, in relation to the global, modern and cross-cultural. As such, it has been instrumental in the growth of a Malaysian identity in the arts that draws from multiple influences and hybrid histories.
For over three decades, Five Arts Centre has been at the forefront of creating experimental, interdisciplinary and intercultural work, providing platforms for the next generation of arts practitioners. Contemporary social, political and cultural issues impinging on Malaysian life are precipitated by way of performances, exhibitions, creative seminars and research workshops.
From 2004 to 2006, Five Arts Centre was the manager of Arts Network Asia, a regional organisation supporting arts work in Asia. In 2006, ASTRO and Five Arts Centre launched the Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund to support artistic work by Malaysians and others committed to the development of the arts in Malaysia. At the 12th Boh Cameronian Arts Awards in 2015, Five Arts Centre was awarded the inaugural “Most Inspiring Award”. In 2016, Five Arts Centre was awarded the Praemium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists awarded by the Japan Art Association.
Today, the collective consists 13 individuals from diverse generations and disciplines. They are Anne James, Chee Sek Thim, Chew Kin Wah, Fahmi Fadzil, Ivy N. Josiah, Janet Pillai, June Tan, Kubhaer T. Jethwani, Mac Chan, Marion D’Cruz, Mark Teh, Ravi Navaratnam, and Suhaila Merican.

AGNES LEE AGAMA
The Grant: RM8,000
The Project: Eco Art Connects Interactive Art Installation
The project will support independent local artists from a range of sectors to mount the Eco Art Connects interactive art installation of about 10 art pieces and eco-sculptures that incorporate reusable, recyclable and in-organic materials, such as scrap metal, plastic, glass, branches, leaves, plants and fabric.
Dr Agnes Lee Agama is an Environmental Anthropologist based in Sabah who has been at the interface of indigenous communities and conservation policy and best practice for over 20 years. In 2012, she founded the non-profit organisation Melapi, so that people from diverse backgrounds could co-create and deliver the Borneo Eco Film Festival’s programmes that showcase environmental films, engage urban youth in citizen-led sustainability initiatives, and enable rural communities to make short films that articulate their views and aspirations. These programmes use artistic expressions in storytelling and filmmaking to engage Sabahan communities in conversations about our environmental and social values.

ANRIE TOO and KELVIN WONG

The Project: The Emerging Directors Lab
The Emerging Directors Lab is a training progamme for young directors. This year-long programme offers early-career directors with a conducive, yet challenging space to hone, sharpen and personalize their craft. Directors are challenged to reflect Theatresauce’s vision of edgy theatre that engages and exhilarates local audiences.
Anrie Too supports fundraising for Theatresauce. By day, Anrie fundraises for the needy and by night she is an actor, singer, host and model currently pursuing her Masters of Performing Arts. Anrie’s theatre performances to date are Titus Adronicus, The Vagina Monologues and Rashomon, to name a few. Her musical performances include I have a Date with Spring, Sinbad and Kiss of the Spider Woman, amongst others. Anrie has also acted in independent movies such as Train Station, recently screened at the GSC International Theatre. Being briefly under the tutelage of Phillippe Gaulier has fanned Anrie’s passion for performing arts more than ever.
Kelvin Wong is a director, educator and founder of Theatresauce. He was director-in-residence at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre from 2009 to 2012 where he designed, devised and directed productions across Malaysia and Singapore. A recurring nominee at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, Kelvin also taught theatre extensively in schools and corporate organizations. He currently chairs the performing arts program at Sunway University, under the Department of Performance and Media. Upcoming: Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis, Hideki Noda’s The Bee. CHRISTINE MAY YONG
The Grant: RM5,000
The Project: A teaching and learning space for Kelantanese music and performance.
This project seeks to create a teaching and learning space of Kelantanese music and performance forms,
by local Kelantanese musicians, for their community and interested parties. Created and coordinated by
Kumpulan Kesenian Warisan Kemunchup Machang, a local group of Kelantanese artists, this project aims
to teach these Kelantanese forms to the younger generation.
Christine May Yong is PhD candidate in Ethnomusicology currently based at Wesleyan University, USA.
In 2013, she was selected as a recipient of the Fulbright Malaysian Graduate Study and Research
Program, which allowed her to pursue her doctoral studies on the practice and development of Wayang
Kulit in Malaysia. She recently completed 2 years of fieldwork in Kelantan, where she met and engaged
with numerous practitioners of Wayang. She believes in collaborative efforts between cultural
practitioners and researchers at the grassroots and academe, where one empowers the other through
rhizomic efforts to ensure the sustainability and viability of performance traditions.

LIM PEI ERN
The Grant: RM8,000
The Project: Nyanyian Bumi
Nyanyian Bumi is a collective project with dancers, Aco Ridwan (Indonesia), Lim Pei Ern (Malaysia) and
Atsushi Heki (Japan), sharing their differences in background and culture, working on the idea and
concept of Body in three different dimensions. The project looks at the similarities in traditions practiced
(songs, dances, rituals, etc.) and draws inspiration from the traditional chanting of South Sulawesi.
Lim Pei Ern grew up in Sabah, Malaysia. She completed Advanced II in RAD Ballet, and represented her
state in the Malaysian Sport Games, SUKMA 2006 in Rhythmic Gymnastics. She graduated from LASALLE
College of the Arts with First Class Honours (BA) in Dance. She was invited to dance for Odyssey Dance
Theatre in 2012 and has since danced for international choreographers such as Wu Yi San (Taiwan/Hong
Kong), Akiko Kitamura (Japan), Marie Gabrielle Rotie (United Kingdom), Inma Marin (Spain), Paula
Rosolen (Germany) and UnYamada (Japan). She performed for John Mead Dance Company and was
taken in as an apprentice for 2nd Company with T.H.E Dance Company Singapore. Pei Ern was with DPAC
Dance Company, Kuala Lumpur since 2015. In 2017, she works independently as a full-time artist.

RIDHWAN SAIDI
The Grant: RM5,000
The Project: Teater Modular
Teater Modular is a series of offbeat playlets by Ridhwan Saidi. 4 playlets it will be staged together.
After three rounds of staging, making the total playlets 12, the final full play with 13 playlets (one extra
playlet as a window to all the 12 playlets, tentatively like Arabian Nights), will be staged.
Ridhwan Saidi who graduated with a BSc in Architecture, is a Malaysian novelist and playwright. He
started writing seriously in 2008 when he initiated the blog Binfilem where he wrote about film and
architecture, among other things. He runs an indie publishing outfit Moka Mocha Ink
(mokamochaink.com) which focuses on contemporary Malay fiction. He is part of the LiteraCity research
team, a literary mapping project of Kuala Lumpur. He was selected for a residency programme at the
ASEAN Literary Festival 2016 and Makassar International Writers Festival 2017. Currently he’s working
on Teater Modular, a series of offbeat playlets.

Lee Ren Xin for a dance performance with 14 mattresses that develops into an open-space

Aswara Dance Company for a contemporary dance performance entitled Pakyung Revisited.

water in Malaysia.
