In 1776, there was this man named Adam Smith who wrote a treatise
entitled An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes o the Wealth o
Nations. Cited as the Father o Modern Economics, Smith ushered anera ultimately leading to the development o modern economics and
ree markets, coming rom a reection o what was going on during the
Industrial Revolution. With his concepts such as the invisible hand,
political economy, and what would become classical economics, Wealth
o Nations as Smiths magnum opus revolutionized the way people saw
societyand the way we buy, sell and what really happens in the process.
So, what have all o these got to do with the Ateneo Youth Economics
Summit 2013? Apart rom the economics reerence, honestly, everything is
just a pun. But or us, its more than that. We believe that today, the same
title applies to our generation: the youth. We believe that the youth is thewealth o nations: and with this knowledge, our teams most heartelt goal
is to raise up a generation in nation-building, economic consciousness and
literacy, and a heart to serve ones nationraising up a generation one
student at a time
Thus we invite you to take part in this years biggest youth summit on
economicsWealth o Nations: Ateneo Youth Economics Summit 2013.

The Ateneo Economics Association (AEA) is the premier economics
organization o the Ateneo de Manila University. For over hal a
century now, AEA has been the champion in promoting economics as
a tool or socio-economic development both inside and outside the
university, as well as organizing activities such as competitions and
ora to allow students and proessionals alike to engage in discourse
and learn to love the subject o economics even more.
While AEA is the home organization o AB Economics and AB
Economics-Honors students, the organization is still very diverse.
With more than 250 members, AEA is a melting pot o students romdierent degrees ranging rom, BS Chemistry to AB Social Sciences
and BS Management Engineering, the AEA population is well-
represented.
The Ateneo Economics Association through the years has worked
with big names and institutions. Recently, AEA has been graced withthe participation o ormer President Fidel Ramos, President Benigno
Simeon Aquino III and many experts in the feld o economics. And
or this years Youth Economics Summit, Senator Teofsto Guingona III
and Gawad Kalinga Founder Antonio Meloto shall be gracing us with
their presence.

Wealth o Nations: Ateneo Youth Economics Summit 2013 is an
annual two-day conerence o high school students which aims
to ignite the interest o the youth in the feld o economics and to
stimulate economic literacy and consciousness through un and
engaging talks, group dynamics, orums and contests. Ateneo YES
2013 will be held on November 22-23, 2013 at the Ateneo de Manila
University campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
This years Ateneo YES to ocus on the youth as the wealth o nations
with emphasis on their role in economics-related avenues or nation
building. As such, we intend to:
(a) introduce basic yet relevant economic concepts concerning
current aairs through a series o talks, orums, group
dynamics and workshops; and
(b) promote economic consciousness and awareness throughcompetitions such as a quiz bee, an extemporaneous speaking
contest and a poster making contest.

methods to address them. This is what the Ateneo Economics (and
Law) Alumnuss website says about the good senator. Learn more

Governance in Ateneo YES 2013!
Founder o Gawad Kalinga Foundation: This dreamers one dream
is simple: to end poverty and see no man a squatter in his own
homeland. Equipped with a heart or God and or others and with an
Ateneo Economics diploma rom 71, Tony set out to establish Gawad
Kalinga, and he will talk more about this in his keynote speech on in
Ateneo YES 2013.
We have invited an amazing bunch o Ateneo alumnus who will be
discussing the dierent current realities and the youths roles to
play in the near uture.

Former Chairperson o the Ateneo Department o Economics: One
o The Ateneo Economics Departments top calibre proessors, in
his talk Why Bother With Economics? will engage high school
students with the act that Economics IS important and vital or a
successul society (and yes, even or a successul individual). Comingwith a doctorate degree rom the Jesuits Fordham University in the
United States, Dr. de Guzman, who also authored Ateneos General
Economics textbook entitled Economics and Society, will surely
ignite ones interest and understanding o economics. Catch him in
Ateneo YES 2013!
The speakers arent the only ones who will be talking. We highly
encourage you guys as well (this is or you!) to voice out your
thoughts, opinions, and suggestions regarding the dierent topics
that will be discussed.

(1) application orm. Please do not leave any feld blank or
incomplete orms will not be processed. E-mail all necessary

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS ON NOVEMBER 6, 2013 11:59PM.
Kindly wait or a confrmation e-mail that will
be sent by the team giving you the ofcial list oyour delegates.
Payment procedure is ound on page 13 o this primer. Registration
ee is P500 to be paid beore November 8, 2013. The registration ee
is inclusive o two lunch meals, snacks, conerence kit and summit

In order to acilitate a systematic method o payment, the ollowing
guidelines are to be strictly implemented.
For over the counter payments, the steps are as ollow:
1. Go to the nearest or most convenient Metrobank Trust Co. (MBTC)
Branch.
2. Secure a copy o Metrobanks Payment Slip and feld the required
inormation/details;
a. Company Name: Ateneo De Manila University
b. Subscriber Name: Name o Paying CLIENT/s (includes
participants, coach, observers)
c. Reerence Number: Ateneo YES application ee
d. Subscriber Number: 115
e. Mode o Payment: Choose rom the ollowing: Cash/Check/Debit
Account
. Amount o Payment: PhP xxx.xxImportant Note: Slips are to be accomplished in duplicate copies
(1st copy: Banks copy and 2nd copy: Clients copy)
3. Present the duly accomplished payment slips to MBTC tellers together
with the attached cash or check.

4. Once validated, the MBTC teller will give Ateneo De Manila Universityclient or client representative a validated copy.
5. Beore leaving the bank premises, check and veriy the clients copy, as
this payment slip will serve as proo o payment;
a. I the payment slip was validated.
b. And, i the copy was the one accomplished and presented to the
MBTC bank teller.
6. Send a text to 09178911414 or an email to [email protected]
inorming that the payment has been made. The email or SMS message
should contain the ollowing inormation:a. Paid via over the counter method
b. Name o the high school
c. Name o the contact coach/principal
d. Contact number
e. Total number o participants (including the students, coach/es
and observers)
. Total amount paid (number o participants * 500)
7. On the frst day o the summit (November 22, 2013), present the
validated copy o payment slip to a representative rom AEA or issuance
o the ofcial receipt.
Important Note: All payments should be made no later than November 8,
2013.

method. The email or SMS message should contain the ollowing
inormation:
a. Unable to make payment via over the counter method
b. Name o the high school
c. Name o the contact coach/principal
d. Contact number
e. Total number o participants (including the students, coach/
es, and observers)
. Total amount to be paid (number o participants * PhP 500.00)
2. On the frst day o Ateneo YES, we will have people in the registration
booth where you can make the said payments.
Important Note: Declaration o incapacity to pay via over the counter
method should be made no later than November 8, 2013. Any declaration
ater the specifed date will be no longer accommodated. As or the proo
o payment, the ofcial receipt will be given to the respective coaches on
the second day o the summit (November 23, 2013).

seconds and lastly, or the difcult round, they will be given 60 seconds.
4. Any member at any given point in time can write on the whiteboard.5. At the expiration o the set time limits, the teams must raise their
whiteboards to be acknowledged by the score keepers.
6. I a team puts down its whiteboard beore the score can be
acknowledged by the monitors and the score keepers, they oreit that/
those point/s.
7. Each correct answer during the easy round will merit them 1 point, 2
points in the intermediate round and 3 in the difcult round.
8. Contestants are not allowed to consult books, gadgets or members o
the audience while the contest is on-going. Teams or those that contain
students that break this rule will be disqualifed.
9. Ater all the rounds, the teams will be ranked rom highest to lowest interms o score. The top hal will advance to the fnals.
10. In the case o a tie or the last rank to advance, there will be a sudden
death round which will last or one minute.
Third Round: Finals (Final Jeopardy style)
1. All teams start out with 10,000 pesos as points.
2. There will be 100 clues o various categories.
3. The category o the next clue is shown on screen.
4. Teams write down their wager (i.e. price they think the clue will be
worth) on a sheet o bond paper and give it to the monitor assigned to
them.5.. The clue will then be ashed and they will be given 30 seconds to write
down their answer in the orm o a question. Once the time is up, they
must reveal their answers.
6. I they put down the correct question, the amount they wagered is
added to their money. I they are wrong, the amount they wagered is
deducted rom their money.
7. Whoever has the most money ater all the clues wins.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH
MECHANICS
First round: Eliminations
1. The student going next will take a topic rom the strips o paper.
2. The student will then be given 5 minutes to prepare.
3. The student can choose his/her side - or or against the topic.
4. The student must deliver a 4-minute speech on the topic and
chosen side.
5. The judges will score the student based on criteria given below.
6. While the student is delivering his/her speech, the next student
will be given his/her topic. Procedure repeats until all students havespoken.
7. Once all the students have delivered their speeches, the students
will then be ranked based on the average o the scores they were
given by the judges. The top fve will advance.
Second round: Finals
1. The student going next will take a topic rom the strips o paper.
2. The student will then take another strip o paper that will signiy
his/her side.
3. The student will be given 5 minutes to prepare
4. The student must deliver a 4-minute speech on the topic and givenside.
5. The judges will score the student based on criteria given below.
7. While the student is delivering his/her speech, the next student
will be given his/her topic. Procedure repeats until all students have
spoken.

8. Once all the students have delivered their speeches, the students will
then be ranked based on the average o scores they were given by thejudges. The one with the highest score will be the winner.
Criteria or judging:
Manner - 25%
- Maintains eye-contact
- Varies pitch and volume as well as pace and speed depending on
emphasis in the speech
- Minimal to no stuttering - only has appropriate pauses
Matter/Content - 50%- The stance given is clear
- Provides points o argumentation and substantiates them ully.
- Gives appropriate examples and analyzes them.
- Does not use vague language.
Method - 25%
- Points o argumentation are clearly outlined
- There is a good logical ow within each point o argumentation
- There is a good logical ow in the speech as a whole.

POSTER MAKING MECHANICS
1. Students will be given the theme a week beore the Youth
Economics Summit.
2. Students will make their posters during their own time during the
week.
3. The specifcations will be as ollows:- Size: illustration board
- Can be landscape or portrait
- Any material can be used to color the poster.
- Poster cannot be 3-D (i.e. no paper mache, not allowed to
stick fgures onto the poster)
- Poster cannot be computerized - completely or partially.
That is to say, all must be hand-drawn or painted on.
- No obscenities - nudity, inappropriate language, etc.
- Quotes, and other such borrowed inormation must be
credited to its original source on a separate sheet that will
be mounted with the poster.4. These posters will be submitted upon the start o the Youth
Economics Summit and will be posted on the walls.
5. Specifed judges will go around examining the posters and scoring
based on the criteria given below.
6. The institutions will be ranked based on the average o the judges
scores. The one that receives the highest score will be declared the
winner.
Criteria or judging:
Visual appeal - 50%
Relevance to the Theme and Clarity o Message - 50%
