• Existem aprox. 88 elementos naturais.• São conhecidos uns 120 elementos.• 90% dos átomos do universo são hidrogênio.• O Sol fussiona Hidrogênio para formar Hélio.• Outras estrelas velhas criam elementos mais

pessados, até o ferro. Só supernovas podem criar elementos mais pessados.

• Incrivelmente pequenos, • Numerosos, temos aprox.

100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 átomos num grama d’agua.

• Sem idade, eles tem a idade do Universo.• Se encomtram por toda parte: cada vez que

você enche os pulmões de ar, esse ar contém átomos que já estiveram nos pulmões de cada ser humano que já existiu.!

Não podemos ver os átomos pois…

• O comprimento de onda da luz visível é muito maior do que o diâmetro de um átomo.

• Porém, podemos vé-los usando elétrons: Microscopia de Tunelamento (TEM) e Microscopia de Força Atómica (AFM)

Electrons

• Ben Franklin, believed electrical phenomena were due to an excess or a deficiency of electric fluid. Electricity can flow through a gas.

• Crooks experimented with cathode rays in partially evacuated tubes.

• 1897 J. J. Thomson showed that cathode rays are particles: electrons. Determines charge to mass ratio.

• 1909 Millikan determines electron charge in oil drop experiment.

Atoms Cannot Reproduce!

Biological reproduction is based on copying molecular structures.

Atoms in a newborn infant come from food eaten by mother (except a very few—from father) .

Prenatal nutrition is very important. Inadequate Ca or Fe will be leached from mother’s body.

3 phases (states) of matter

• Gas fills any container—lots of space between molecules

• Liquid takes shape of container but doesn’t expand to fill—molecules bumping into each other

• Solids retain shape--atoms bound to each other
