Millard Public Schools is offering all the required paperwork for the Back-To-School process online at: https://www.campus.mpsomaha.org/campus/portal/millard.jsp Once you complete the forms that apply to your student, please print, sign and bring them to the Millard West Back-To-School process. If you do not have the ability to print the forms from home, a computer lab will be available at Millard West during the Back-To-School process. If you need a paper packet or have questions, please contact the school at 402-715-6000. For technical assistance, please call the technology division at 402-715-6290.

Special Note: All 9-11th grade students need to have Jack Martin Photography take his/her picture to ensure that their picture is included in the school yearbook. If a senior isn’t getting a formal senior picture taken at a studio, they can have one taken for FREE by Jack Martin during registration. The only cost would be if a student then wanted to purchase the photos taken. STUDENT COUNCIL SPONSORED DANCE The Student Council is sponsoring a Back-To-School Dance on Friday, August 17th from 8:00-11:00 p.m. Cost is $2.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL

MILLARD WEST FAMILIES This note is very important and very serious as it relates to the classes your daughter or son has chosen for the 2012-2013 school year. As was stated in previous notes to parents, your registration process for your student needs to be thoughtfully done and accepted as complet-ed. Parents must consider the spring registration process as being one of a near contractual agreement. We may not have the staffing to make changes in your student’s schedule for the upcoming year. Changes will only be made in cases of computer error or a scheduling error on the part of the advisor or counselor. We simply do not have the capacity to make any other changes in schedules for the 2012-2013 school year.

Dr. Greg Tiemann, Principal NEW STUDENTS Millard West High School students and their families who are new to the Millard School District are invited to meet and greet each other, student ambassadors, counselors and administrators on Thursday, August 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the commons. Tours of the building will be given, so bring your schedules. SCHOOL LUNCH ACCOUNTS Cashiers will be available during the Back-To-School Process, August 3 & 6 to put money on lunch accounts and explain the variety of choices offered in our cafete-ria. Students putting money on accounts after school starts can do so from 6:30-10:00 a.m. daily. No money can be put on accounts during lunch.

ATTENDANCE OFFICE INFORMATION

CLIP AND SAVE

Attendance 402-715-6010 (Use this number to report absences, call students in late, appointments, or phone messages) Guidance & Pupil Services 402-715-6015 Activities 402-715-6025 Millard West Main Number 402-715-6000 DAILY ATTENDANCE & TARDIES Parents and students are reminded that classes begin at 8:45 a.m. each Monday morning and at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday through Friday during the year. Students are recommended to follow a morning routine that allows them to arrive at school at least 15 minutes before class begins. This arrival time allows adequate time to socialize, organize school materials, and report to class a few minutes early. On a daily basis, many of our late students enter the building from 1 to 10 minutes late. Students leaving the house 15 to 20 minutes earlier can easily eliminate this problem. Students send a positive message to their teachers and don’t miss valuable learning time when present in class on time each day. Thank you to those students who are on time for class every day. This is one of those seemingly little things in life that can make a big difference. REPORTING ABSENCES If a student is absent from school, a parent/guardian should call the attendance office at 402-715-6010 or 402-715-6011 the same day between 6:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to report the absence. Parents/guardians are expected to call each day the student is absent from school unless other arrangements have been made with the attendance office. A phone call will be adequate notice of the student’s absence from school. Handwritten notes will not be accepted by the attendance office to report an absence.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE Being responsible for tracking the attendance of over 2300 students daily is a huge job. As a result, the Millard West attendance office is an extremely busy place between the hours of 7:15 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The attendance secretaries have a wide variety of responsibilities during the school day and each works very hard to serve the Millard West community.

Incoming phone calls to the attendance office are numerous during the school day. We fully understand the need for parents to contact the attendance office to communicate about students needing to leave school for medical appointments, family emergencies, or other appointments. Coordinating these phone calls and providing necessary passes to students consumes an extensive amount of staff time.

Please reserve your phone calls to necessary appointments and other attendance office business. Much too frequently our phone lines and staff time are tied up with calls requesting students to be dismissed to leave campus for lunch or to be dismissed from attendance at study hall. Millard School Board Policy states that students in grades 9 through 11 are expected to be in school all day. This group of students does not have open campus privileges and can’t be dismissed for lunch or study hall. We are asking you as parents not to make these type of calls. They consume valuable time of our attendance staff. Thank you for your help with this matter. Your students will be seniors before you know it and will have earned the privilege of open campus.

TARDY RULES A student will be assigned to Tuesday/Thursday school when late to a class or Quality Time 6 times. Additional tardiness will result in disciplinary action including but not limited to Tuesday/Thursday School, suspension, removal from class with a grade of 5.

Students arriving more than 20 minutes late for class will be recorded as excessively tardy (ET) and subject to disciplinary action.

CELL PHONES/PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY DEVICES Student use of cell phones/personal technology devices is permitted during passing periods and in the cafeteria during lunch. Students will not be permitted to use cell phones/technology devices in school classrooms for non-educational purposes (texting, taking pictures, accessing Facebook, playing games, etc.). A classroom teacher may permit use of cell phones/devices during class/quality time for instructional purposes only.

Any student use of a cell phone/technology device which disrupts a classroom can be cause for teacher confiscation of the item. The confiscated phone/device will be turned over to an assistant principal at the staff member’s earliest convenience. The phone/device will be returned to a parent/guardian on the day of confisca-tion or to the student the next school day. Failure to give the phone/device to any staff member upon request will be considered insubordination resulting in disciplinary action. Multiple infractions of classroom disruption involving a cell phone/device will result in escalated consequences. EARBUDS AND HEADPHONES Students will not wear earbuds or headphones during the school day. Students found to be wearing earbuds or headphones will have the item confiscated and returned the next school day.

I-POD’S, MP3 PLAYERS, HEADPHONES, PSP’S, OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES Students are highly discouraged from bringing these items to school. I-Pod’s and PSP’s are pop-ular targets for theft. Several of these items have been stolen in the past. Students bring these items to school at their own risk. If stolen, it is highly unlikely these items will ever be recovered. Millard West is not responsible for these items when stolen.

Failure to give the electronic device to any staff member upon request will be considered insubordination resulting in disciplinary action.

SKATEBOARDS Skateboards are not allowed on campus anytime. Skateboards brought onto campus will be confiscated. Parents will need to pick up a skateboard when confiscated. FOOD AND DRINK No food or drink other than water bottles with a cap will be allowed in Millard West classrooms. Teachers can make exceptions to this rule for curriculum related activities and Quality Time traditions.

During the regular school day students are only permitted to bring drinks which are unopened (sealed) in bottles or cans. STUDENT HANDBOOK During the first week of the new school year all students will be issued a copy of the 2012-2013 Millard West Student Handbook. The handbook includes information specific to Millard West along with the Millard Public Schools Standards for Student Conduct. The Standards for Student Conduct apply to all Millard Public School students. Parents are urged to review the student handbook with students. It is important for both parents and students to know the contents of the Code of Conduct. Please take the time to read through and discuss this document with your student(s).

MORNING BUILDING ACCESS Millard West students are able to enter the main entrance beginning at 6:15 a.m. The main East entrance will be the only way to enter the building before 7:15 a.m. The entrance on the West side will be open for student entry at 7:15 a.m. Tables and chairs are available in the commons area before school for students to study or eat breakfast purchased in either the Cat’s Den or cafeteria.

DRESS CODE It is important for students and parents to be aware of Millard West dress restrictions. Tank-tops (without t-shirt underneath), halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, mesh clothing, and other such revealing clothing is not acceptable for school. As a simple reference, shirts or blouses worn to school must completely cover the back and stomach of the student. Any garment should also have sleeves completely covering both shoulders. Excessively short skirts and shorts are not permitted to be worn in the school building.

T-shirt manufacturers continue to develop clothing inappropriate for the school setting. Noted below are examples of T-shirt messages, statements, illustrations, etc., not acceptable to be worn at Millard West. Vulgar or offensive messages. Sexually explicit or sexual innuendo (inferences). Demeaning or derogatory statements related to individuals or groups of persons (racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, etc). Promotion of drugs, tobacco, alcohol. Promotion of violence, weapons, aggression, etc.

We know that parents and students will demonstrate good judgment while shopping for school clothes. The Millard West student body is expected to enter the school building each day “dressed to learn”. Please expect students to be confronted by a staff member if their dress is judged to be inappropriate. Millard West is a place of learning and appropriate school dress does make a positive difference.

STUDENT PARKING This is a reminder that Millard West offers campus parking for a yearly fee of $35. For this fee students are issued a parking decal and can park in student parking areas on campus. The student must provide a parking registration form signed by a parent and the student. Only the vehicle with a valid parking decal can use student parking areas. Students with a valid parking decal are free to drive another vehicle to school, but this vehicle must be registered in the attendance office on a daily basis. Students can purchase a second decal for $5.

Please feel free to contact Stacy Longacre at 402-715-6006 if you have any questions regarding parking procedures. Money generated by the sale of parking decals is used to provide an outside security person to maintain the safety of student and staff vehicles. Millard West has a very low rate of damage or theft in student parking areas and the outside security plays a large role in this.

Dear Fellow Millard West High Parents, Throughout the year our principal receives funding requests from teachers to support student generated ideas and materials that would enhance their ability to provide our children the best education and experience possible. These requests are not funded by the Millard Public School System and frequently are unsupportable or the teacher funds it out of their own pocket. I now have 4 years of watching the great personal sacrifice and effort devoted to my own child as well as many others. I was personally inspired by an initiative that became reality in 2009 through Mr. Kip Colony, who hosted a holocaust survivor, Ms. Livia Bitton Jackson, and author of a book he used in his class. The idea was a student’s, but without his courage and support, it would not have been a reality. Her visit touched every aspect of not only Millard West, but the local community as well, and was the impetus for this request. It was the realization that there is no money available for Mr. Tiemann to draw upon and the desire to reward our teach-ers and staff with a supporting discretionary fund, that I started Generating Innovation for Teachers and Students (GIFTS) alias The Principal’s fund three years ago. Last year we donated $3200. Mr. Tiemann used the money to buy classroom technology that allows teachers to quickly assess class knowledge levels and tailor the lesson to the students. It has been met with rave reviews by both the stu-dents and teachers. Additionally, the science curriculum was updated and this past year was its first trial. In an effort to make it relevant and understandable for students, teachers are always looking for hands on materials and technology. They came up with a list that the school was able to fund through this gift. Not only do our students reap the benefits, but the teachers are also encouraged and motivated. Every year presents a new challenge as our school district is dedi-cated to helping our children be competitive in the 21st century and with it comes instructional needs and ideas to fulfill that goal. I am asking that as you write out your checks this year, you include one to Millard West High School for this fund. A $10 donation would be great but no amount is too small or too large and it is tax deductible (receipt will be provided). I will be accepting donations during registration. Look for the table labeled GIFTS in the commons area. I only ask once a year and your money is held by the school for use by the Principal. Thank you for any help you can give. Addition-ally, I ask if there is a parent who is willing to take this fund over, as my daughter graduated this year. It is a very small time commitment (send this letter for inclusion in the parent newsletter and collect money at registration.) I strongly believe that this fund should continue. If you have questions you may contact me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Paula Hinger

SOLID auditions for the All-State Orchestra. Way to go! We will start this year with a fundraiser to replenish our Activity Account. Watch for brochures from

“Earth Friendly”. We have a new group forming this year- the “Eclectics”. This group will memorize music and perform

with choreography. Our Fall Concert will include our fellow musicians in the Westside High School Orchestra. Music is a

bridge. ☺♫ We look forward to a fantastic year at Millard West!

ATHLETICS FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR It is not too soon to be planning ahead for participation in athletics for the next school year. All students and parents are reminded that in order to participate in interscholastic NSAA athletics & activities, all students must do the following:

1. Pass a minimum of 20 credits during the 3rd and 4th terms of 2011-12. If you will not earn 20 credits, you must take summer school to earn those credits in order to participate in athletics for the first semester of 2012-2013. West students must be enrolled in a minimum of two classes in each nine week term. We strongly recommend a minimum of three courses and encourage students to register for four classes each nine weeks.

2. Have a physical exam by a licensed physician after May 1, 2012 and have the required forms completed.

3. Complete the student Participation/required forms, complete the Emergency Card, plus the Transportation Form. Turn them into the Millard West Activities Office.

4. Millard Public Schools has an annual non-refundable participation fee of $60.00 for each student partici-pating in NSAA sponsored interscholastic competitions. All students participating who have paid the $60.00 fee receive the Millard West student athletic admission pass and a participation card.

When all of the above steps have been completed and filed in the activities office, each student will be issued an Athletic Participation Card, which verifies that they have met all requirements for participation in athletics. Each student must give their Participation Card to their respective coach when checking out for their first practice. NO STUDENT MAY PRACTICE UNTIL THEIR PARTICIPATION CARD IS TURNED IN TO THEIR COACH. PLEASE! Don’t put off getting your physical or completing and turning in the necessary forms. Get them turned in well ahead of the first scheduled practice. A NEW PARTICIPATION CARD IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY FOR PARTICIPATION IN NSAA ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES. FALL SPORTS INFORMATION The first date of practice for Football, Girls Golf, Boys Tennis, and Softball is Monday, August 6th. Boys and Girls Cross Country & Volleyball will begin the first practice on Monday, August 13th. Fall sports offered are:

Boys & Girls Cross Country - Coach Max Kurz Football - Coach Kirk Peterson Girls Golf - Coach Kent Speer Girls Softball - Coach Don Brummer Boys Tennis - Coach Dan Bratetic Volleyball - Coach Erin Byrd

WILDCAT ATHLETIC & ACTIVITIES NEWS THANK YOU TO PARENTS, FANS AND COMMUNITY! The West High athletic staff would like to thank all of our parents, students, fans and the Millard West community for their enthusiastic support of our athletic and activities programs during the 2011-12 school year. Your support in attending, participating and following our programs is appreciated. How can you support Millard West Athletics and Activities? It’s easy! Here’s how: Encourage your student/parent and friends to be involved in sports or organizations by participating or

attending West High activities. High school sports and fine arts performances are the BEST ENTER-TAINMENT VALUE around! Not only does your attendance provide financial support, but it shows our students that we care about and are interested in their lives and the things that matter to them.

Encourage your student to purchase an activity ticket. It is $40.00 and allows the student to gain admis-

sion to any home athletic event at which admission is charged, without additional charge. It also allows them admission at student prices to all Metro Conference events.

Anyone can purchase an all sports pass for the 2012-2013 homes games for $50. 2012-2013 admission prices are as follows: Varsity Football and Basketball Adults = $6.00 Students = $4.00 All Other Varsity Sports Adults = $5.00 Students = $3.00 Non Varsity Events Adults = $3.00 Students = $1.00 Join the Millard West Athletic Booster Club. Help this organization support our athletes and coaches with

parents’ nights, banquets and fundraisers to help us provide in areas where revenues match needs. A booster club membership entitles each family to two booster passes which admit the holder at no charge to all Millard West athletic events, EXCEPT VARSITY FOOTBALL AND VARSITY BASKETBALL.

Contact the Activities Office for more information on how to join.

MILLARD WEST CROSS COUNTRY - 2012

Frequently Asked Questions About Cross Country

1. What is Cross Country Running? It is a team sport where the runners from different schools compete by running a course that is marked off in a city park, dam site, or golf course. The distance of each race varies from 4000 meters to 5000 meters.

2. When does Cross Country Begin? Cross Country running is a fall sport. The season begins in August and continues through October. The length of the season is ten weeks.

3. Is there an Off Season Conditioning Program? Yes there is. The team will meet throughout the summer months to condition together. The meeting time and location will vary. Check the Master Schedule for more directions. Each runner will be placed in a group that meets their physical fitness ability.

4. What type of “Running Camps” are available? There are numerous types of running camps that are available for each runner. Check with your coach for a camp that will meet your abilities and interest.

5. Who races in the meets? A typical meet will have varsity and open class races. The varsity race allows up to seven runners from each school. The open class race has an unlimited number of runners. If you don’t make the varsity race, you still get a chance to run in the open class race. Everyone will get a chance to race. There is no “sitting the bench” in Cross Country.

6. How does a team score in a meet? You can compare team scoring to the game of golf. Low score wins. Individual racers are given a number according to their finish place. Teams first five places are added together and the team with the lowest point total wins.

7. What are practices like? Practices are geared to the physical fitness level of each runner. Beginning runners will run short intervals of 2 or 3 minutes followed by a short rest period. When the runner’s physical fitness level improves, the intervals will increase.

8. Where do we practice and how long? We vary our practice sites from Millard West running track, Walnut Grove Park, Chalco Hills, and Zorinsky recreation areas. Practices last about one and a half hours daily, from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.

9. Which style of shoe is best for me? Peak Performance Shoe Store, 156 & Dodge St., will give Millard West runners a 20% discount. A know- ledgeable sales person will help you make the proper shoe decision based on size, width, and training.
