World Communications Day By Sr. Teresita C. Espina, FSP The talk Living the Life that Matters of Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite, SSP was the highlight of the two-fold celebration of the Centenary of the FSP Foundation and the 49th World Communications Day on July 15, 2015 at Our Lady of Manaoag Chapel, Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City. Fr. Mario gave a soul- searching presentation of how to live a fruitful life and leading others towards a life full of meaning. He said that one must realize that he is only a passerby; he leaves behind the treasures, fame, power and people he holds dear when he dies. A rich person is not one who has the most material things but one who has the least needs. He further stressed that the true character of a person is revealed by how he manages when he has nothing, and how he acts when he has everything. In the end what matters most is what one has built, what one has shared; not his competence but his character. Fr. Garry Igot, SSJV, Director of CFLA, said that the talk of Fr. Mario is a perfect reminder for everyone in our culture today. Most of us, if not all – having faith in God or none – are afraid of death. “The talk directly brought this reality close to us. No matter how hard we “knock on wood,” we cannot stop death’s approach. One day the door of death will open wide for us, not of our own choosing but God alone,” he said. Death is not something to be afraid of, but a reality that one should be prepared for day by day. Everything in the world is so fleeting. Nothing will last forever. Only one’s relationship with the Lord and neighbors lideres ilabi na ang bag-ong presidente. Perseus Cabunoc, Fr. Garry Igot, Fr. Amie Balacuit, Fr. Jun Cadenas, Fr. Joel Lazutas, Fr. Demli Valmores, Fr. Satur Lumba, Fr. Julius Clavero, Fr. Macky Ceballos, Fr. Nick Basadre, Fr. Roy Barros ug Fr. Joseph Montemayor, Fr. Ramer Colanse, Fr. Harnifer Godinez, (Lamdag News) Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite, SSP gave a talk, Making the Message Matter to the Oro clergy during their recollection on July 14, 2015 at Patrick Cronin Formation Hall. He said that the survey conducted by SWS in July 1991 shows that there are 81% of Catholics who attend mass on Sundays. In 2013 it has gone down to 37%, and for every 11 Catholics, one is thinking of leaving the Church. Various reasons include: fierce individualism, rebellion against perceived authoritarianism, secularism and materialism, contempt for things traditional, the scandals in the Church, and because the majority of Catholics are ‘sacramentalized’ but not evangelized. He said that the proclamation of the Word is a challenge to re-incarnate Jesus and make him visible, tangible, understandable and acceptable to the people of today. “How do we make the message matter so that when people go home, the message becomes the source of strength and pillar of support for the next week before they go to church again?” he asked. It was pointed out that priests have the best product but they don’t know how to market it. One has to promote market, package, present, expose and advertize the message in order to make the message matter in one’s life. He gave four elements necessary in the proclamation of the Word: a) communication; b) know God personally; c) know the people to whom you proclaim really well; d) recognize the presence of the power of the Holy Spirit. Making the Message Matter Pope Paul VI once said that modern man listens to witnesses than to teachers; and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses. Being a witness means one has lived a dynamic, profound and personal relationship with Christ. Pope Francis said that preachers must be the first ones to be moved by the Word of God and incarnate in his daily life. People thirst for authenticity and call for evangelizers to speak of God not in general and abstract way, but to shepherd with love and compassion. “As ministers, one must go ahead of the flock so that one can bring them to the right pasture, stay behind the flock so that no one is lost, and be in the midst of the flock so that they will feel your presence,” he said. Lastly, he stressed that one can only be effective when he is open to the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit, the agent of renewal. Fr. Steve Olario, one of the reactors, commented that there are few priests in the parish and they are overwhelmed by the structure, systems and multiplicity of things to do including administering the Sacraments. These are some of the factors that affect the quality of shepherding their flock. Fr. Medallo Valmores, another reactor, believes that preaching needs humility. He said that for 33 years of preaching, there were times that he feels inadequate despite the preparation but those were the Sundays that were well-received and well- appreciated by the parishioners. “We should be humble enough that whatever appreciation people give to us, in all humility let us return it to the giver who is God,” he said. Fr. Joel Lasutaz, SSS, said that marketing is giving value to the message and giving value to the people. People are valued and that is what other sects are doing. They give value to the people and the message, including the structure of the building, the media equipment, and the sound system. “If we do value the Word of God, then we also value our relationship with him. Our preaching gives value to the message through the way we speak, the way we deliver it just like promoting, advertising, and packaging it,” he said. Abp. Ledesma Ledesma thanked Fr. Mario for sharing a lot of pointers in giving homilies and witnessing, and the challenge of how priests can share the message in the Archdiocese. “If all of us focus precisely on this – in fact, in Evangelii Gaudium, that’s the longest section of Pope Francis’ exhortation about giving homilies – we can be authentic messengers of the Word. We pray, with the urging and help of Fr. Mario, we can continue our pastoral help to many people in our congregation,” he said. (Lamdag News) will serve as the ticket to the bounteous banquet prepared by God, the Father, at the end of time. What one truly enjoy in this world is just a foretaste of the perfection in heaven. The world is temporary, heaven eternal. Thus, death is the only way to experience that eternity. “Death is simply telling us, there is something better than this world can offer – that is heaven. Go for it,” he added. Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite, SSP Ms. Maristela Camaddo , Fr. Garry Igot, SSJV Sr. Noemi Vinoya, FSP, Abp. Through an earlier questionnaire, FABC-OCLasked religious congregations about their understanding and concrete experiences of New Evangelization, the challenges and megatrends confronting them in Asia, and the pastoral resources, priorities and prophetic role of their communities. We noted Pope Francis call to wake up the world through communion and mission, and three characteristics of a Church engaged in New Evangelization: to be a Church of joy and mercy;to be a Church which is poor and for the poor; and to be an open Church.WelistenedtotheaddressesofCardinalBrazdeAviz,Prefectofthe Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, andArchbishopSavioHonTaiFai,SDB,SecretaryoftheCongregationfor Evangelization of Peoples. We listened to country reports that gave us an appreciation of the distinctive context of each country, as well as the common challenges confronting all of us. In Pattaya, we also visited and learned from church-affiliated centers for orphans, differently-abled persons and marginalized women. But most of all, we listened to each others stories and peak experiences of Gods goodness and mercy at the heart of our vocation. We have developed friendships and a feeling of belonging to one family. In this light, we reiterate the call to fidelity, to communion and to mission. I. Fidelity to Jesus Christ and to the charism of each consecrated communityThe New Evangelization thrust of the Church calls us consecrated men and women to return to our first love, who is God in Jesus Christ to whom we are consecrated and to whom we are to be configured. This means to encounter the person of the Son anew and allow the Spirit to transform us into his likeness so that we can bear witness to him and to the Gospel for all peoples. This implies: Anintegralandlife-longformation,whichfocusesonradicallivingof theGospelnurturedbyalifeofprayer, simplelifestyle, humility, and docility;Owning and living our charism;Undergoing a process of conversion which involves us as persons and as communities, as well as our structures and institutions;Rediscoveringthebeautyofconsecratedlifewithitsjoys, hopesand challenges;Becoming prophetic in living the Evangelical Counsels;DeepeninganawarenessofGodsreadinessforreconciliationandour forgiveness at all times;ExperiencingGodinreal-lifesituations(naturalandhuman-made disasters, political issues, etc.) as sources of hope and mercy.II. CommunionTaking up the Holy Fathers directive to religious to be experts in communion and prophetic witnesses living by Gospel values, we commit ourselves to living the inclusive love and solidarity that Jesus taught and lived by: Promotingagenuinelyopenandfraternallifeinourcommunities, appreciatingtheuniquenessofpersonsandcultures, andhelpingall persons to grow up to Gods dreams for them; Appreciatingmulticulturalism as a value, not as a burden; learning the richness of the cultures and settings where people come from;Treatingourcolleagues, employeesanddomestichelpastreasured partners, creatingtheatmosphereandthestructuresforcompetentlay persons to work with us with justice and respect;Promoting unity and healing where there is division, bigotryor violence against groups.III. We need to persevere in our dialogue with the poor, with peoples of other cultures and religions, as well as with the youth and faith-seekers.We trust in our brothers in the hierarchy as well as our co-workers among the laitytoregardusasequalpartnersinrespondingtothesignsofthetimes. And He will come to us again, bless us, giving us a new heart. To be faithful to our vocation as consecrated persons, we need to be: Mystics: women and men for whom God is our first love and the source of our joy and strength;Prophets: Convinced disciples for whom the non-negotiable absolute is the Gospel of Jesus; Servants:Lovingandhumblemenandwomenwhotrulyputtheneedsof others above our comforts, and who want to make a difference by creating a world of mutual respect, care and compassion. BecauseoftheBasicEcclesialCommunitiesorBECs, Christians have developed deep religiosity and a strong sense of community and responsibility towards fellow Christians. What was considered as the strength of the ChurchinPikit, however, turnedoutalsotobeoneof her weaknesses.Pikit Parish is situated right at the heart of an armed rebellionbeingwagedbytheMoroIslamicLiberation Front.TheChristiansareaminority, comprisingonly 35% of the total population. The MILF has maintained a camp in the interior villages of the town.CONSTANT WAR, SPORADIC PEACEFrom 1997 until now, the people of this town have experienced four major armed confrontations between governmenttroopsandMILFforcesthatresultedin massiveevacuationsofcivilians, mostofwhomwere Muslims. Not only that, war has always been very divisive and its corrosive effect on the relationship of people is even more damaging than the physical destruction. In war, eventhecivilianstakesidestheChristianswith themilitaryandtheMuslimswiththerebels.Andso, even after the war is over in the battlefields, the silent war goes on in the hearts of the people of Mindanao.
